Just love the 90's video game and movie review channel styling of this channel, very, very cool.
Thank you very much. I had attempted this briefly with my first two videos on MCTV (Sonic and 32X), though folks kept telling me I needed to "get with the times". Took me a few years to say "fuck it" and re-commit myself to the aesthetic.
@@MasterCastTV Fuck those guys, that 90's feel is the core of your channel, i love that so much, man!
@@MasterCastTV Get with to the times ?!?!? Hell no. So glad you decided to go with a retro 90's aesthetic, brings back childhood memories (more simpler times/better times)
Oooooh, maybe the second is coming as well? On the Dreamcast? Nice vid! You usually upload while I'm on the tram going to work, thank you man! You help me distract and get to work all pumped like!
I don't see myself touching Dreamcast any time soon. Still, down the line.
Thank you very much. That's always been a thing with me. I like making videos folks can enjoy on their break, or a commute. Not *everything* needs to be a mini-documentary that runs on for 15-30 minutes, not counting the 2 minutes of ads we sit through now. Ugh!
The atmosphere is top quality for it's time, very eerie and historically accurate (except the cemetery). I disagree that it's boring, I had a lot of fun with this, I can even call it a hidden gem
This version is a bit better than the Playstation due to the better quality of the 3D models. Also, there's an unused item called "spider card" which can be activated using Gameshark or PAR, the item acts as a mix between the green potion and the mine.
Played the hell out of this on PS1 growing up. Recall really enjoying it, and bounced back and forth a bit between this and Tenchu for the gore and dismemberment factor, among other things. I also really liked the atmosphere in the levels, and I love monsters. I guess I was a bit of a sucker for this game, and now I kinda wanna play it to see if I even still got it in me to give a shit. Perhaps I'll save it for Halloween
Why wait for Halloween? Enjoy Halloween right the fuck now, sir! That's what I'm doing. I've been playing this and Doom 64, along with Resident Evil 2....again.
@@MasterCastTV haha true! I actually just got my copy of Deep Fear in the mail, so I am likely going to play through that! :)
YES! Japanese, English, or a copy of the never-officially-released North American version?
I'm not Super Game Hulk but wanted to just 2nd Deep Fear being a great game. I have the JP import. I'd love to play the unreleased NA version or the PAL version so I could experience the thing fully in English but I heard using the Saturn Red cart to play burned games can cause the CD laser to die early. I was thinking about getting a "parts only" system from eBay and doing one of the mods to replace the CD drive with an SD card reader but even those are sort of expensive these days.
Did you ever do a review of Deep Fear?
@@MasterCastTV Japanese. Dipping my toes into the cheaper Japanese imports as well, as I am going to be ordering House of the Dead as well.
I really love the whole 90s aesthetic of your videos!!! N64 has a lot of gems in my opinion! Really hope for a RE2 N64 reviews or maybe Hybrid Heaven.
Thanks, man! I appreciate it. Just so you know, I've already reviewed the Nintendo 64 port of Resident Evil 2 (not to spoil the review for you, but it's a positive one). Hybrid Heaven I do have, but I'm gonna' need more time with her before I feel comfortable commenting on it.
@@MasterCastTV i always love your reviews! Cant wait for the next one!
I'm going back and forth on which to do next. I'm in a horror mood, so I think I'll do all of 'em, but - ugh! So much to do and so little time. One thing I'm definitely working on is Doom 64. Finally got my hands on a copy.
@@MasterCastTV The best Doom port in my opinion! Cant wait to see it haha!
That's what threw me for so long. I thought it was just a port with some modifications like Duke Nukem 64, but it's like an entirely different game. I mean, it still plays like classic Doom, but the levels are entirely different, more puzzles, and - I feel like an idiot. It wasn't until I saw the video from Stop Skeletons From Fighting where I was like, "This is Doom 64?! What the fuck was I thinking back then?"
Think you can turn the adrenaline meter off in the N64 version?
Had this on Playstation, never rated it.
Great to see you cover the N64 version, doesn't look like any efforts were made by the developer to enhance it.
Yeah, you can turn the adrenaline meter off with N64. On PlayStation and PC, you haven't any choice but to use it. Since the game expects you to look for secret areas, it's best to turn it off I feel.
I guess they upgraded it somewhat. Having the option to turn off the adrenaline meter is good, and I've read the jumping is improved from PSX (I can't even imagine what it was like on PlayStation). However, not much else.
@@MasterCastTV going off memory, but Playstation version had cut scenes, the adrenaline meter was little more than a time limit in effect.
This was one of those titles I was very surprised to see get a sequel.
I seem to remember the studio moaning about being forced to use Sony Playstation library's, when the spent months writing their own code.
Should of put more time in on basic game design I feel
100% agree with this review. This game needed several more months of polish and playtesting. Nice atmosphere, flawed gameplay
So glad this channel is back. I was concerned.
Oh, yeah. I'm back, and I look even worse! 😂 It's hilarious to me, because here you guys actually went back and re-uploaded your 64DD videos in HD (they look fantastic, by the way), and here I'm like, "Let's make everything look as if I taped it off HBO!"
But I'm back. Sorry for the concern. However, just so you know, I binged your shit while I was on hiatus. Thank you! Especially love the Ultra 64 videos. Ya'll turned me onto the Ultra 64 jewel, which I now have. Again, I thank you. I was thought Ultra 64 sounded bad-ass. It just made sense. You have NES, Super NES, then Ultra NES. Now *that* is sexy. Nintendo 64? It's 'okay'....
I know, I'm in dire need of a life.
I honestly LOVE the vhs taped look
And it was done righteously. No filters. Tapes are recorded via composite cables from genuine hardware. I should make a room video.
Is Tuesday night and i'm just here looking at old mastercasttv videos waiting for the new one 🙏
I remember trying to like this game on PlayStation and N64 and i never could. The game is not that bad but also is not that good, but at the time some people was always mentioning like it was so good and terrifying. The same happened to me with fighting force.
I had a harder time playing Fighting Force. After working through the first two or three levels, I was like, "I'm really glad you didn't become Streets of Rage 4." Hahaha!
First! ;-) just dumb luck! Glad to see you pumping out videos regularly man!
Hahaha! Nice. It's good to be productive again. I'm just anxious to have enough videos to throw on a tape. Working on a limited edition VHS release once I have an hour or two of new videos ready.
@@MasterCastTV thats badass! I need to get a vcr again. I have like 10 vhs tapes. Including GI joe the animated movie :-)
They're getting harder to find in the wild, though I find it really depends on your location. Keeping them in working condition is fairly simple. It's not that far removed from modifying game consoles. Still, I have a lot of tapes, not to mention blank tape stock for VHS and VHS-C (VHS-C for my camcorders), clamshells, etc. I even have Betamax. Hahaha! The first tape we ever bought was M.A.S.K., the old cartoon. I still have it, and it *still* plays well, which amazes me.
I already live-streamed this one for my challenge of beating every N64 game; I gave it a "C-", almost below average.
2:59 Alien Trilogy music.
It's *all* Alien Trilogy music, minus the bit from Event Horizon. Hahaha!
I am just about to watch but will say, n64, Ps1, Dreamcast, I am a sucker for Nightmare Creatures 1&2, debatable on if it is good or not I guess, I just love it for the atmosphere, guilty pleasure perhaps. 😜😎
I'd say you just have more patience than I do, which is by no means bad. I totally get the love for its atmosphere. Nightmare Creatures looks like a period horror film made interactive. I've yet to play Nightmare Creatures 2, though I wouldn't be opposed to it. Had to have ironed out the control and camera issues, right?
@@MasterCastTV I can't remember if they did or not but yeah it was more just playing for atmosphere but it was not deep by any means. I was always one to just put up with bad camera. I was never one that was bothered by Resident Evil tank controls or fixed backgrounds either. That said, I completed Nightmare Creatures 1&2 but not sure I would revisit them as I have no doubt they are likely best left as a nostalgic fond memory. Currently I am really enjoying the recent Shadow Man Remastered on PC which I also played back in the day on N64/ Dreamcast, looks great and again was interesting mature content gaming especially unexpected on the N64 😎🤘 Love your videos by the way.
I was never bothered tank controls or fixed cameras either. Admittedly, I got a little spoiled with Super Mario 64 and Shadows of the Empire to an extent. While their camera angles can be troublesome, they at least let you adjust on the fly. You had a bit more control.
I've yet to play Shadow Man. Remember seeing the cover a lot, though I was so up Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid's ass then that I don't think I gave it much attention. May have to change that.
And thank you! It's nice to see the shift to SD hasn't put people off. Haha!
I liked your review of the game it makes me laugh 😂😂, and I think that everything you said is true, and this is what I also think about this bad game, although some consider it a great game. ps although this game has been around for 2 decades and a half, it still scares the h*ll out of me even when I think about trying to play it. 😅😅
If you're playing the ps1 of it 3:10
Oh man, this was the first game I bought with my shiny new Playstation in 97' (yep I passed on RE2, had both of them in my hands). I though this looked awesome, and I got home and was blown away by the graphics and CGI intro at the time (not in the n64 for obvious reason).
But yeah...your thoughts are on point. I kind of forced myself to like this since it was the only game I bought. It was clunky and rough and that awful platforming. It was difficult for the wrong reasons.
The soundtrack on PS1 and PC are redbook audio, so it had Heavy Metal music play during boss fights.
There were 2 sequels, the more well known second one and an unknown flip phone game made by Gameloft in 2004 (which I was just playing on a phone emulator the other day coincidently).
Damn! I kinda' feel for you there. When I first bought my Saturn, the console had already been discontinued. Got for $20 at Toys "R" Us. When I went to Babbage's for discounted games, I had the choice of picking up Burning Rangers or Panzer Dragoon Saga. I passed on the latter because I hadn't played the first two, and I read on the back it was an RPG; a genre I wasn't fond of. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Burning Rangers quite a bit, but it's not Saga.
I only ever played the demo on PSX. It looked awesome, but was turned off by the camera. Didn't even get to the jumping, which I've read is worse in that version.
Oh, the N64 *does* have hard rock for a few boss battles, which is fine. I just wish it had that kind of energy in most of the levels. Never even knew there was a sequel for flip phones. Considering I still use a flip phone (apparently, I'm the only employee of my building still using one), I should hunt it down. 😂
@@MasterCastTV Using a flip phone is the way to go! Stay off the toxic social sites and other distractions that modern phones with high emf's invite. haha. Speaking of flip phones, There was also an awesome de-make of Resident Evil 2 for flip phones no one remembers called Resident Evil Uprising. Look up gameplay of it, reminds me of RE2 for GBA. So many interesting flip phone games completely lost to time, like Shinobi Tolerance.
And wait wait wait. $20 for the Saturn? That's amazing if correct. Burning Rangers and Saga? Oh... you mean 2 of the most expensive games that were once in bargain bins, unwanted like a used tampon? (That is were I found Burning Rangers) Yes, Saga is one of the greatest achievements by human kind.
You reviewed Saga, time to review Burning Rangers. I find it charming and very original. Sonic Team: 1996-98; the only time in history they avoided making a Sonic game.
Anyway, great review of this one and talk to ya soon.
Hahaha! Honestly, the flip phone doesn't protect me from social sites. I still use 'em, though I wait until I get to my desktop. Part of my problem is that I have a physically demanding job (I work in a Costco bakery as part-time wrapper and cleaner, but it's close to forty hours a week now with the pandemic), so I worry I'm gonna' crack the screen. That, and I can't wrap my head around the concept of getting insurance for a fucking phone! I'm not a socially outgoing person. If I do go out for that sort of thing, I'm with my wife. Otherwise, I only leave the house for work and errands. I don't have that *need* for a smart phone. Also, it drove me nuts working at AMC Theaters and - now - Costco, how my co-workers wanna' play on their damn phone when they're supposed to be working! We don't have desk jobs with lots of downtime; we work retail. MOVE YOUR ASS! I show up early, do my job, and I leave as soon as my job's approved. It just fuckin' annoys me....
Also, for me, it's a great excuse to disconnect from the world. Remember the old days when you left the house and nobody could reach you? It was liberating. Granted, folks can reach me now, though it's only ever my parents and my wife that contact me. They know not to call/text unless it's an emergency, so I'm free for eight hours. It's lovely. I don't want the world in my ass.
What were we talking about? 🤣
Flip phone games, huh? Like the Nokia N-Gage? I'll look it up later. I'm curious now.
Yeah, the Saturn and its games were being liquidated. Best - birthday - ever. An ex gave me her ass as a present one year, which was great, but couldn't top my 15th birthday when I went to Toys "R" Us with $100 in hand, buying dead consoles for $20 a pop!
The good ol' days. LOL!
I think I played a demo on ps1 and loved it as a kid. I have the sequel on dreamcast but still need this one in some form
How's Nightmare Creatures 2?
@@MasterCastTV Alright, not as good
Such language I like it I agree 3:41
it's great to me
Yeah, I like the game, but the gameplay is the worst part. My favourite part though has to be the cheat that allows you to play as set monsters in different stages, really enjoyed messing around with that. Thumbs up on the review.
I tried that cheat before! Kinda' reminded me of the code in Shadows of the Empire where you can play as the wampa.
thanks to youtube I wasn't getting notifications.. oh well I turned the bell off then on again I hope it fixes this. Anyway, I remember playing this a teen, I used to be kinda scared lol I remember this game to be very difficult for me back in the day but I kinda liked it XD I need to replay it, nice review!
I see many people saying this game is so cool but its only because they like gore and horror. Never really felt like playing it to the point i only know now it has a sequel. Resident evil 2 any day.
I'm surprised they could not use the same video compression like re2 on n64 to show all the features that the ps1 had
Resident Evil 2, if I remember correctly, was a costly title for Nintendo 64. The memory and compression techniques required would have upped the price of a single unit, and I'm betting they didn't want to spend that much on Nightmare Creatures. Resident Evil 2 was riding high on the success of its predecessor, so it's easy to see why Capcom would go that extra mile to get it on as many systems as possible. Not to mention their deal with Nintendo at that time. Nightmare Creatures, being the first entry in the series, may not have warranted that kind of attention? Also, Nightmare Creatures released on Nintendo 64 a year prior to Resident Evil 2 on the same platform, so the studio may not have even considered that as a viable option?
Hard to say these days.
@@MasterCastTV ya your right hay the kid on the inside dream can he.
My friend played this game a lot back in the late nineties. Both versions I think. I couldn’t get into it. I would just watch him. But it looked like a decent 3D, horror, brawler. If that’s a genre.
It's a genre. Excluding the 3D aspect, we had horror themed brawlers like Aliens: The Arcade Game, as well as Alien vs. Predator, and - of course - Splatterhouse. Nightmare Creatures looks and sounds the part, but lacks excitement and finesse in my opinion.
I disagree with all the hate its getting, Its a great game for its time, this was the early 3D days, ofcourse if you go back and play it now you will see the flaws, your used to modern standards of gaming
4:51 You gotta learn to play the game, you can cut them and kill them in 1 hit as long as you find the upgrades in certain levels, you also need to knosw what sub weapon works better for each enemy
In my experience, the upgrades are only so effective when your enemies keep dodging your attacks. I'm aware of 'em and, if you look closely (hard to do with VHS), I did upgrade my staff with Ignatius. Since some are out of the way, and if you're running about with the adrenaline meter, I was less inclined to explore.
We can agree to disagree in regards to its fun factor, though I'm curious about the historical inaccuracy of the cemetery. I'm not all that familiar with the 19th century, or London. What was off about it? Also, what was your take on Nightmare Creatures 2?
This one never really clicked with me. The sequel even less so.
I've yet to try Nightmare Creatures 2. I'm open to trying it, but my expectations are tempered.
@@MasterCastTV I had the Deamcast version back in the day, and it smacked of, "Here's another straight PS1 port of a very dull game!" Kinda reminds me of how the Wii would get PS2 quick and dirties.
Ever played King's Field?
It's so disappointing that Nightmare Creatures is so mired with issues, because with a bit of polish and more effort, it could have been a truly good game, but, there's just so much wrong with it, it makes it just mediocre. That said, do I need another reason to play Resident Evil 2? Any time is a good time for Leon and Claire busting some caps in undead asses.
Resident Evil 2 is awesome. If I should ever do a playthrough, I should play it on Nintendo 64.
Great video
Thanks, bro! I do try.
The game is shit. But I will say something that doesn't have anything to do with this particular game that I miss about this era. Because of the limit in graphics fidelity the reliance on your imagination to fill in the gaps was huge. For instance, Alone in the Dark on 3DO looks like hot garbage today. But I can say that back then I was entirely engrossed in that world, my mind would be racing at what was in that room or area that I couldn't see. Today, with such awesome fidelity and hand holding it's almost like it's less engrossing. Bah, maybe I'm an asshole.
Edit: I thought of something as well. It's sort of like how the AVP movies suck a huge one, while Alien and Aliens are masterpieces. In Alien and Aliens you weren't over exposed to the monster, leaving your imagination to run wild. Often times what you think of in your head is way scarier than what you see presented to you. It's the same reason Cloverfield was such an awesome movie. Don't over expose your creatures! It removes all mystery from them and their fear factor.
Yeah, I can't fucking stand Alone in the Dark. I'm fine with how it looks. For whatever reason, it reminds me of the Sega CD. I see where it was once awe-inspiring, and I can still appreciate the aesthetic. However, the control is fuckin' dog shit. The switching from searching and fighting, all that jazz, just sucks the fun right out of it for me.
I love the first Alien vs. Predator movie, partially because they didn't show the creatures *that* much. When they did, they rarely got enough lighting for us to see every fine detail. That, and most were done practically. Oddly enough, you see even less in Requiem, and it's worse than the last film. It's so fuckin' dark I feel like I'm looking at shadow puppet theater.
Is Nightmare creatures the worst game i played on the n64 no there have been far worse games the atmosphere is pretty good at least but it doesn't beat fighting force or castlevania and some people say that castlevania is bad i disagree the music and atmosphere are fantastic in my opinion.
I love the Castlevania games on Nintendo 64. Granted, I do feel Legacy of Darkness is more complete, but that first release had me heating up the console something fierce.
Don't care for Fighting Force. I wanted to like it, but I think the beat-em-up genre had a hard time translating to 3D. Die Hard Arcade even had to cheat, still using a side-scrolling perspective, just to keep that immediacy. Fighting Force felt off to me.
As for worst game on N64, I can't really think of a horrible game. I know lots of folks say Superman, but I've yet to try it.
Nothin beats an original re2 run
I agree. It will have to wait though. Playing through Doom 64 and Level 6 is PISSING ME OFF! Hahaha!
Not a fan of Nightmare Creatures. It had a nice atmosphäre and the setting is nice but the gameplay is so boring. It is always the same. it is so easy to lose the motivation playing it.I had the PSX version but never finished it.The game had potential but the potential was not used.
I'm with ya' there. I appreciate the game's not really meant to be played in one sitting, but it just got old for me after a few levels; especially when you're having work 'round a wonky camera and stiff control.
@@MasterCastTV Yeah the core gameplay is too mundane and the game has no other features to entertain the player like a great story for example.
Fuckin' A! The story could have been cool had they conveyed it properly. That, and if the adrenaline meter had worked like the power meter in Streets of Rage 3. Let it build, then use it to break outta' some hairy situations.
