Burnside's music is the logical conclusion of poverty, no prospects, hard work for little pay. No, he wasn't formally trained, who the hell could afford it. Despite that, the impulse to create, even in the most desolate of conditions, overcame the grinding lives of the artists, he wasn't a good man, simply a man of his time and place, and his music is an amazing distillation of all of that....
I think he worked regularly and was not a hoe welding worker...he was the tractor guy...a skill level on farms that was a few steps above field workers...and was a part time musician and full time family raising man...but his music could have been full time in another environment.
Gotta love that North Miss. hill country music. Footage of Mr. Woods is hard to find if not rare. FYI....Johnny Woods was Fred McDowells harmonica player. Fred once commented the best he ever heard. Anybody know how old Johnny was in this vid?
@fuxgood Mr. Woods is defenitely one of the greatest blues harmonica players that ever lived....EVER!!! I would guess that MR Woods was probobly in his late 60's when this was filmed.
Acoustic Stories is possibly the greatest solo blues album ever recorded - right up there with Robert Johnson. Listened to a lot of blues and RL is easily in the top 10.it’s no wonder the Black Keys wanted to do a Hill Country Blues covers record. Plus, how can you not love that charming grin?
Brilliant track. I first heard RL Burnside playing in the background of an episode of the Sopranos - a scene at the Bing. It's called 'It's bad you know' and is posted on youtube - I guarantee you it is one the best Blues track you could hope to hear
I have watched this weekly since it's been posted. The realest blues. The real blues.

You're so spot on... I could not add a single word more on what you wrote.

Johnny was born November 1, 1917, so he was 67 when he made this video.
@Carthsgtr these two men have all the talent in the world, love art
Even better, if that is possible, is Mr. Woods playing with Mississippi Fred McDowell. Like 1967, "Mama said I'm Crazy".
Cooool Boys !
The real blues😊
Is there anything R.L. touched that didn't turn to gold? Johnny Woods will be my new project to find music also.
Check Speedo Harmonica Jones, intense blowin without pause when he gets into it.
They still exist in Clarksdale!
Ditto mate..well said.
Two disciples of Mississippi Fred himself.
swag.
