I'm a China high school student, and i can tell you that i haven't seen or even know about the scene like that. But i have to say gaokao(高考) is really excruciating.but this is the fact,i was born in china not in american,my family don't have enough money to sent me to a foreign country for a better education, but i do love to learn English,it make me know this world better.Chinese government also need a way to select student because there's too many people in china, china and american is in a different situation, please remember it.the math we learn is hardly ten times harder than same age american student learn. But the way china educate their student will whole change in 2017,a new law is already made,CHANGE IS ALWAYS NEED TIME,how do you think?
It was similar in Korea several decades ago but now it’s different. We focus more on speaking and listening rather than reading and writing when studying English. I hope China has already greatly improved English education system.
English doesn’t represents hope, it is just making languages extinct. Look at Hawaiian or any Native American or native Indian languages, some of them don’t even exists. Your language, your culture is your identity. World used to be diverse but when English spread across the world, people started to disrespect their own identity just in thought that they’ll have a better life. We should not loose our identity and communication can be done in another language or even translated. But it doesn’t me that we have to learn English to have better future, your own language can provide you future at least in your country. Respect your language, preserve your identity and have some feelings towards your culture.. Don’t come under influence of U.K. it has just spread english all around to make itself dominant.
English is a universal 2nd language, your native language is your 1st language.-- this is what struck me the most and shows that English is not meant to destroy our cultures and languages. I wish the gov of Quebec shared this idea and didn't want to outlaw English. My family speaks French with each other and other francophones but learning and speaking English allows us to know new people and have more job opportunities.
I'm am currently English teacher in China, and the English mania here is off the charts. However, China's education system is based mostly on rote memorization. Often, Chinese students can read and write English flawlessly, but cannot speak or understand it almost at all. Unlike in Europe, where an English speaker can navigate and even live abroad because many people speak excellent English, China is extremely difficult without knowledge of Chinese. So, until the government figures out how to teach English effectively, the English mania will continue to grow.
The origin of most European languages is Latin that is same as English. However, Chinese, English and Korea...their origin is not Latin. That's why we Asian people need to rely on memorization.
Well, in fact, the purpose of learning English in China is making more people have ability to read English academic literature, not encourage them to go abroad. I hope that can explain your doubt.
aka Shirley Marie Bradby (English_For_You) Yes, my student from Russia and I really enjoyed Jay Walker's talk about "English Mania". As a professional ESL teacher, I am of course, personally involved in teaching English and have been for over 16 years. It is indeed, a pleasure to be able to use online resources like this video clip to make English come alive for my students!:) would just like to say that I am also a language learner! I speak fluent Italian, some Spanish, and scholastic French!
Well speaking of the Gao Kao (college entrance exam) this video is pretty much twisting the thing...I myself grew up in China, took English as second language, and went through the exam. In fact, English is just one of the three or so subjects, pretty much like in SAT. Also the shouting tutor in this video has been popular for a while but that was like TEN YEARS AGO. His method has been very controversial. I feel the picture of English learning in China this video presents is very inaccurate.
@swethad8920 Yooo, you will not believe this. I actually became an English teacher myself, and now I'm teaching listening. I'm actually thinking of using this vedio for the mid term exam. Life is strange man.
English is one of the subject that more than 2 billion people in the world trying to learn. English brings new opportunities, being a part of the wider conversation, global conversation. English mania is not good or bad. English is just a universal language of problem solving. Like the presenter said: English is the
condescension and confidence that native speakers of his language are the fairest, the freest and have the right to interfere in other people's problems. name his nationality without naming it
Wow! He explained that people learn a foreign language to..... get better opportunites in life? Give a man a medal! Also, he looks like he just saw a video of that Chinese learning method and told a buddy "hey look what I've just seen". Except... he told an audience. Some of these talks are so useless :/
Since the 3 days I have wrote this comment and listened to other videos and found more information, I actually agree with you. The language is a national identity. The pronunciation of speech in other languages is different to English so they would find it hard. This is why it is hard to make a universal language. I no longer agree with the punishment thing I said. I do agree with family having a more active role in their child educational and non educational life though.
It's worth stressing that it's not just 'Chinese people talking to Americans' or 'Turkish people talking to British people'. Its Italians talking to Vietnamese people too, when neither party is likely to know each others language, they're going to resort to English because it's easier.
Indeed! Something else noone seems to have considered is that native english speakers would be in a minority and might lose their control over the language as new cultures begin to influence english.
Don't underestimate the power of language. Humanity history is language history, Without language, we can not communicate at all. If you still believe " there are other ways to communicate other than speaking and reading letters." then communicate Japanese people without speaking. I am quite sure you can not communicate them.
***** Determination? The Chinese follow collectivism, if people around them shouting they will also shout mindlessly. And what they scream is full propaganda shit
because its hard to work with people if you cant communicate in same language and why you are talking about amercia ? america is just a ex-colony of English speaking UK
That's real English become world's largest lingua franca and it's really so helpful, we can be all together by English only. We can solve our all problems together by English ❤️
hey, that's AWESOME! and what do you think about listening comprehension challenges? I'm posting one challenge daily. I would appreciate your feedback as an English learner. thanks
Since I first saw this video (over a year ago?) I have returned from China and Vietnam. A world language is working well, but it is NOT English. English media is putting a effective blockade against informing on the wonderful Esperanto Conferences--programs, long based on equality and non-violence. English continues to spread despite its difficulty and despite the US and England's continuous use of force in military ventures around the world, a continuation of 400 years of colonialism.
You really think america isnt pushing English, or even the world? then why is it so important for people to do TOFEL and IELTS for university and work?
You should see the Onion making fun of these videos. It's called "Onion Talks" , and The Onion had asked TED to help make them,. Alas, no help was given.
I'm glad my country invented it over 1000 years ago - although a lot of english tribesmen had to die to secure it, otherwise old norse danish would be spoken instead !
+VC YT Actually over 1000 years ago English was much closer to modern German, than to modern English. More over thanks to old germans, french and romans English exist in such a form as we know it. So it's quite arguable that your country invented it.
it's very, very wrong to think gaokao decides one's future, or even "literally". It's not just wrong, such thinking is very detrimental to one's personal growth as it leaves out many other important things to learn. you get a very angry dislike for that. and please, STOP PREACHING THAT SHIT
so wrong children are not all the same, so you cant treat them all the same e.g. artist and cheap labor (like poles) are not usually friends. you want all world to speak in YOUR language :D , but for rest of us, our language is national identity

that is fourty percent true....infact...mandarin might be....because mandarin has billions of speakers.....and English is ranked second as the most spoken language in the world....indeed....English can still remain as the global language of this world....till up to know....many people who are MONOLINGUAL speakers speaks English and English is their official language....English is also used in school.....during activities....even at work....business.....we use English.....so there's only a small percentage that English won't exist as the global language.....
