The brilliant thing about this scene from Sunshine’s point of view is that he immediately gained the respect of his teammates. That’s the most important attribute you can have as a QB in order to effectively lead a team.
Instantly clears all the "fruitcake" stuff from their minds and shows his toughness and willingness to defend his brothers on the team. One of my favorite scenes in any football movie.
He already started with their respect after messing with Bertier. This was him letting everyone, including the other team, know that he is leading a team that looks out for each other. It also helps his own team trust his decision making.
Sunshine is using Bruce Lee's principle of fighting without fighting, "use the opponent's momentum against him". They set us up for this earlier when you see Sunshine practicing Qi Gong while the girls watch dreamily. Greatest payoff ever in a Disney movie.
My favorite part as well ... after the flip, the "No Look" arm bar straight to the facemask of Number 18 was perfect ... then, he pushes off on another opponent on the way back to the huddle :)
I love how even when he shoves the other guy away, he doesn't break eye contact. The guys who smile the brightest are the ones who will make sure you regret giving them a reason to stop smiling.

I've seen this movie so many times because it is my favorite one, and just now I noticed something... Earlier in the movie, on Sunshine's first training session, he was having a hard time making a 3-yd pitch in a veer play. "You can throw it a mile but can't make a 3-yd pitch" Boone said to him, and asked Rev to show him how to do it. Fast-forward to this scene... Rev's out, injured. Ronnie comes in, makes a statement after that hit... and what is the very next play in the sequence? A perfectly executed veer pitch... and then, in the locker room, Ronnie thanks Rev for teaching him the play. What a detail!
"That's a bad white boy" at this moment he knew he had respect from his black teammates. All jokes aside I was thinking that's a bad man right there he knew what was coming and to eye ball a defensive player on the ground after the play was over ever more respect even if this just a movie
Better than him flipping the lineman over is the stiff arm he throws to the other guy right after - without even looking at him! THAT was the badass icing on the cake for Ronnie Bass.
I just love how at 2:31 you can sense his energy saying "yeah mess with my family you"ll get you ass handed to you" attitude while looking straight at number 40, honestly what awesome moment plus that comment at the end "daaaamn that is one bad white boy" made this scene ever more better. 👌

On his first snap! Sunshine goes dark, and gets right to the root of the trouble coming from the other side. Ha ha, kid had a plan! I also like Coach Boone's use of the label "Colonel" for Ronnie, the rank of his father who presented himself and his family's values very well when they first met. That obviously left a positive and welcomed impression on Boone's decision to take Ronnie on...that and the big arm, but still, the family wasn't closed-minded.
