      And I remember how Jerry West stood up to Laker team owner Dr. Jerry Buss once. Early in the 1986/87 NBA season, Dr. Buss was about to do a handshake deal with Dallas Maverick team owner Don Carter. Plan wasa to trade Lakers James Worthy to the Mavericks for Mark Aguire. Jerry West told Dr. Buss that he himself would resign on the spot if Buss were to actually execute such a trade. The threat worked,, as NO trade was made,, and the Lakers went onto winning the next 2 NBA Championships.

    The build up to this scene made it land so hard. The confusion around who was the coach after Westhead was fired. Riley having more of a friendship with the players because of how he was with them while he was the assistant.
    The following montage of the Lakers on fire with Grease playing in the background was a great way to cap it.

    • @broadstreet21
      @broadstreet21 7 месяцев назад +4

      And then it kind of happened again with the Miami Heat and Erik Spoelstra, when he went from video coordinator, assistant coach, then head coach.
      Riley appears to be like a clone of Red Auerbach. He's a player's coach, friendly with the guys, always finding ways to connect, but he also knows when to lay it down.

    Adrian Brody does an excellent job at Pat Riley.
    One thing I appreciate about Riley is he was always grateful for the roles Jack McKinney and Paul Westhead had in him becoming the Lakers HC. McKinney's unfortunate accident elevated Riley to assistant and Riley continued running McKinney's "Showtime" offense, which he always credited to Jack. Riley was good friends with Westhead and cared about him. While I'm sure he was happy to become the head coach, he also was sad about his friend losing his job, and also made sure to let Magic know he was partially responsible for Westhead getting fired.

      Riley didnt have nearly the talent in NY that he did in LA. NY expected him to bring Showtime to NY....however you need the horses to run Showtime (which The Knicks clearly did not have). Riley is a perfect example of a coach tailoring his coaching...around the talent he has. Those Knicks teams had the personnel to play tough defense/half court offense...and he squeezed every bit of effort out of that bunch. They just happened to run into Jordan's Bulls...and a Houston Rockets team that turned out to be too much offense for them.

    If anybody was going to play Pat Riley, it was definitely Adrien Brody. Phenomenal actor all around.

    It's crazy to me they didn't at least bring back a season 3 to finish the 80s and resume the whole Celtic-Lakers rivalry. This was the best series going on on TV for a while and every episode knocked it out of the park. Maybe another can pick this up and start telling the Kobe years which were legendary and perfect for storytelling

    We’ll need someone like Pat Riley when things don’t go well and we need to be built up.

    I just wish people would have given this a shot, I know I KNOW IN MY HEART IT DIDN'T HAPPEN THIS WAY! But I can't help but want it to go this way cause goddamn does it make me love these characters so much. John C. Riley just fucking deserves better man, his Jerry Buss is something else

    One of the greatest tv scenes I’ve ever watched. If you had watched up to this point in the season, Riles had been such a pathetic, sorry character, a shell of the “Pat Reilly” we know and love. Between the build up of conflicting personalities on the team and the internal dilemma pat was facing, especially with his experience with his father, this was the best build up and breaking of tension I’ve seen in a tv show.
    I’ll never forgive them for not renewing this.

    Every now and then a show comes along that is great and for some reason it doesn't connect with the studios and they cancel it. This is a glaring example. The casting the acting the writing the basketball scenes are all amazing. Jerry west is my new fav laker based on the show lol

    people often oversee him breaking his hand, his point during the speech is them being tight, which he gestures with his broken hand. Thats some conviction right there.

    Can't believe they canceled this show! It was the best show on TV in an era with nothing but complete shit, and this was a refreshing reminder of what a good show with good acting can be. Guess it was too much for the simpleton contingency that makes up the market nowadays

    Though frustrated at the time, McAdoo later said the lack of pressure coming off the bench instead of starting meant he slotted into the side more effectively. I was honestly surprised he never won Sixth Man.
