KBS Tour 120 Iron Shaft v KBS Tour C-Taper 120 Iron Shaft - Is There A Difference?

  • Iron shaft comparison between the KBS Tour 120 & the KBS Tour C-Taper 120 backed up with GC2 & HMT launch monitor data. I'm using Mizuno's DNA Fitting Components so using exactly the same head in the JPX-900 Tour for both tests. The KBS Tour 120 promotes a mid to high ball trajectory whereas the KBS Tour C-Taper promotes a low to mid ball trajectory. Do we see that difference or not? Watch to find out.

    I just got fitted for the C-tapers and I love them. We added a little bit of weight to the hozzle though to mimic the weight of the adapter that was on there when I was getting fitted. That might be why I didn't notice the added weight in the handle.

      Hey that's a great idea I really was loving the feel of the 120s when I got fit and it was because I could feel the head of the club better with a lighter shaft but as I wait for my clubs to come in I'm hoping some of that was not attributed to the adapter weight.
      I don't like a heavy head but these just felt like they could get through the turf better with that added weight you know. how did you add weight to the hosel?
      Sounds like a pretty good fitter you had

      @@BuffaloNickel9 I just asked them to add the weight of the adapter. Funny you asked me now, I'm literally at the place hitting balls as I type this, lol. They just put tungsten powder in the hozzle when they're gluing it up. Apparently it's a pretty common request. The place was Club Champion.

    Thanks! I do wish there were more shaft comparison videos out there. However,
    you can’t compare spin numbers on shots that your squaring the face on to those that your leaving the face open on, the spin and ball height numbers will increase with an open face. Also, because the shaft weight felt so different compared to the KBS tour, I would’ve waited an hour or two before hitting that c-taper, it would’ve felt like less drastic of a change. Our bodies are really amazing, it doesn’t take long to get used to the “feel” of a golf club, then 5 minutes later you switch and the second shaft you pick up feels like two by four.

    I FOUND OUT HOW IMPORTANT THE SHAFT IS LAST WEEK THEY ARE HAVING A SALE ON THE M1 DRIVER AND I TRIED IT ON THE SIMULATOR THOUGHT I MADE GOOD SWINGS BUT WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE. FOUND THE SHAFT THAT I LIKE THE KURO KAGE SILVER TINI AND IT WAS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY I BOUGHT IT AFTER ABOUT 10 OR 12 GOOD SHOTS. THANKS FOR SHOWING THE IMPORTANCE OF REAL CLUB FITTING.

    great video Michael thanks, same thing happened to me on the friday, I got fitted the other day on the Minuzo fitting machine with minuzo 919 forged hitting a 7 iron, KBS tour stiff (120) was the number 1 staff registered for me and the C- taper light i had my sights sent on was 4th in X-stiff (115) but the KBS tour i hit was pretty sweet, hit it better at 165 meters, (straight) than c taper 155 meters with a slight fade. just comes down to looks of the c taper vs feeling of the tour, watching this video I think i will trust the machine test and results.

    A stupid point here... but I was fitted recently for the C-Taper shafts. I thought they felt amazing. I tried around 10 different shafts and the best was the C-Taper and it wasn't even close. It just felt right and the numbers all worked out perfectly. I have a high swing speed though.
    My point is simple though... for this guy, he didn't like the shaft. I did. Goes to show you that your specific case will be dependent on a lot of things that are specific to just you. This is the tough part about watching reviews on youtube... it's just someone else's opinion that may or may not carry over to your own experience with the same clubs.

    Nice swing! But this is a good example of who the ctapers are made for. Your tempo is smooth and transition is pretty smooth. The butt is likely too stiff for you. Ctapers are made for quicker more aggressive swingers. Literally only for 5-10% of golfers i think

    I play the KBS Tour shafts and I love the feel of them. I prefer a high ball flight in the irons and the Tours make the ball soar. A high ball flight into the greens means that the ball will stop on the green. If I need more club, then so be it. I can always go there.

    I know this was done some time ago Michael but the 5th shot with the KBS Tour should have been taken out to give a more accurate average not least because it affected the Launch Angle quite a bit. Thanks for the review anyway Michael

    It looks the same, other factors I will consider, loft of my clubs, length of the club my height, my swing plane, this will effect everything. I've played high kick point shafts in x stiff , stiff for decades,so c taper should work very similar to the shafts I used to play.

    Good video again Michael. Classic example of having to time the release in accordance with how different shafts load. And you clearly didn't like the counter-balancing!

      Actually both of the K?BS shafts here are slightly counter balanced. Swing weights of the club will come 1-2 points lighter in both the C-Taper and KBS Tour. I suspect it's more about perception than actual facts. However, regardless of all of that. I think it's clear to see how by purely looking at the numbers, they don't actually differ that much, especially if we take the heavier strikes out from the C-Taper, the numbers look so similar, yet actual results were very different. Just shows, how some people on RUclips who subscribe to the argument of shafts making little to no difference, are only looking at launch monitor data, instead of real world ball flights and end results, and as we can see from this, you can have very similar launch monitor numbers but real world results very different. Interesting vid nonetheless.

    • @wodenoftheangles3339
      @wodenoftheangles3339 7 лет назад +1

      JAG sixtyfive Yes, correct, they both are counter-weighted. Kim Braly is famous for his counter-weighted shafts after all.. ;)
      To more accurate surmise your point I think would be to say the old cliche "strike is king". Different weighting, weight distribution, load profile, kick point etc etc all affect players suitability to a particular shaft.
      Interestingly for me in this video was the fact that when I try to hit Project X's (basically same as Kim Bralys C-Taper) I get exactly the same result as Michael in this vid - weak pushes.. I get faster clubhead speed with the KBS Tours but the strike consistency doesn't quite match my x100s. And "strike is king" so I don't go with them - however they 'feel' really nice..
      The only shaft I'd like to try which I haven't yet is the NSPro 120 which has an interesting EI profile over all the others it seems..

    • @JAG1651
      @JAG1651 7 лет назад

      The Nippon Pro Modus 120 is not counter balanced, and is soft in the butt section but stiff in the tip. It feels very soft in transition, due to that softer butt section, and some people feel that may need to go up a flex for the feel that suits them. It has a similar bend profile to Dynamic Gold, just a smoother feel. Whereas the Nippon ProModus 130 is very butt stiff and very stiff in the mid section but soft in the tip. It feels very stiff in transition due to it's stiffer butt and mid section, but still has some kick through impact, and the opposite is true of the Modus 130 in that people often have to go with a softer flex. You are right in strike is king, but what many people fail to recognize is 2 things. Launch monitor data is only part of the tale, as we have seen in this vid. Rezl world results are the key. And secondly, that although strike is king, it's also true that a shaft can and often does have a direct influence on that strike in the first place for most people.

    It`s all about feel!! I ended up with the KBS tour Stiff 120 shaft as it felt right for me also and I could deliver the head to the ball consistently.
    Go try them your self I say!!

    I play the Tour Elevate 117 stiff. I tried the C Taper Tour 120 stiff and I was shocked when I swung it. I was expecting this heavy cumbersome shaft but what I found was a shaft that was so butt heavy that I could not feel the clubhead in the backswing. The C Taper literally felt like a 90 gram shaft to me. I had to immediately go back to my Tour Elevates. So be warned if you think C Taper has good weight it does but it is in the butt part of the shaft not the tip.....so much so that for me they felt way too lite. I totally second what Michael stated. You can't feel the head with the C Tapers even though the stiff is 120 grams....it is so weird.

  • @Android602715
    @Android602715 7 лет назад +1

    Well your spin with the c-taper was off most likely because of strike, with the c-taper you got 6k spin with your only good hit, whereas your solid strikes with the tour you only peaked at 5500. Now those high weak strikes could also influence the launch angle. Now you did talk about feel. But would it not be worth getting used to a slightly different feel to get those numbers, as this shaft 'feel' isn't the same feel as a club head, surely

    • @MichaelNewtonGolf
      @MichaelNewtonGolf  7 лет назад

      Android602715 for me feel overrides the slight difference in performance. Possibly over lots and lots of testing and getting use to the different feel then the strikes might get more consistent but I honestly didn't like the balance of the weight in the CTaper.

    Hi Mike, Old video but its of interest to me as I bought the srixon 785 irons with a kbs c taper lite 110 shaft. The shafts feel boardy and on the longer irons i miss out of the toe a lot and get that leaky ball flight. My old irons wilson v2 have kbs flt 120 and I feel i strike the ball a lot better. Similar iron head different shafts and different strike patterns. I'm very tempted to buy a set of kbs flt shafts. What do you think?
