- The Door In The Pillow by Frank Cottrell-Boyce was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 23 February 2019. (PLEASE NOTE: MUSIC REMOVED AT THE END OF THE PLAY BY COPYRIGHT OWNER OF MUSIC TRACK.. A MINUTE IS LOST BUT IS OF NO CONSEQUENCES TO MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE STORY. Apologies to any inconvenience caused.
Story:
Annie, a woman whose fractured sense of the world is held together by stories. Daughter Terri starts to question where they are coming from - one story in particular seems wildly disconnected from anything Terri knows of her mother's past. It doesn’t crack under examination, and seems to have a concrete solidity that reality no longer does....
Cast:
Annie ….. Ann Mitchell
Terri ….. Samantha Spiro
Bernie ….. Carolyn Pickles
Eric ….. Tony Turner
Father Burns ….. Don Gilet
The Soldier ….. Christopher Harper
The Children ….. Grace Doherty and Eviee Lavery
Other parts are played by Saffron Coomber, Jeanette Percival, Alexandra Constantinidi
Written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce
Directed by Allegra McIlroy
“Door in the pillow”. Within the context of dreaming - what an absolutely delightful phrase 🙏
These are excellent. The quality of the stories and the acting Is outstanding. Thank you for taking the time to upload
Pleased you enjoyed the play
Oh yes 😔 people are right about the ending! Sometimes it is just some music and doesn't matter..but she was cut off mid- sentence at the climax of the story!!! I have seen this elsewhere.. shall be looking for it now. Such a lovely, compassionate story too.
I really love these uploads! Thanks so much! But as for this one, I didn't get the ending at all. The daughter who was with her during her recording DIDN'T HEAR ANY RESPONSES; when she plays it back, she hears a man's voice; when played back to the other daughter, her mother is speaking the responses in a different voice. But I mean, when the daughter was there WHILE making the recording, there were NO responses ... so was it a ghost or is the daughter going nuts?
Also what about the children’s voices on one of the recordings, and the Viennese Waltz music?
The ending is on BBC sounds. If you Google BBC sounds door in the pillow you get the right page. But there are only a couple of minutes missing and nothing special happens. Thank you for posting all these stories.
Unfortunately, it's not available anymore!
Glad i read the comments i won't set myself up to be annoyed will give it a miss pity 😔
If you'll just listen, really listen...stop trying to impose your own reality bc it scares you, bc they arent who you need them to be anymore...it's not about you nor should it be...stop correcting, reminding, scolding even at times...please just listen...really listen. "if they are happy, leave them there" Amen & God Bless one & all
@Chris Bliss Only the subject matter of the play..."Whar" else? LOL
The Twelve dancing princesses is an old Grimm fairy tale. I think she was mixing the story up with her poor befuddled past. Thank you very much for the upload!
Thank you so much for all the time and effort you've put into this, Arch!! 🙏🏻😊✨ I'd never listened to this one before! Cheers! xxx
Yes, a lovely story, and made me quite tearful...but, crap, the end was cut off! Bugger!!!
This is a very good play, understanding old age and isolation, how everyone needs human contact to keep sane. What is true, if no-one is nearby to agree with you, let's hope most people in lockdown aren't on their own.
pity the end was cut off like that ... :-( moving story ... thank you for sharing it !!! 🙏
Seems like this RUclips channel/user’s videos are cut off near the end.. There’s another video here called “Mrs M” that I was was enjoying which wasn’t complete either.
Sorry when plays contain music that is covered by copyright the copyright holder can have the play removed. If it happens 3 times they shut the channel for good which has happened to me twice before. RUclips has a facility where they remove the music in this case at the end of the play. Sometimes the copyright holder is content to have their music played but then have adverts in the drama which I know my listeners also dislike. Best regards, Arch
Thank you this hit home I look after mu mum who has dementia it’s such a horrid illness
Thank God my mother went before all this.
Excellent drama
Thanks
Well thought out play thanks
For posting it.
Keep the radio dramas coming . Love them 💖
Just lovely. Thanks so much.
Thank you 😊
Another story to end bother day in lockdown - you are my saviour Arch x
Jilly Lloyd I love lockdown !! It's brilliant not looking forward to everything going back to "normal" getting up at 4.30am serving grumpy customers coffee I've been enjoying having time to myself waking through bluebell woods
@@lisettelachat1870 I love the bluebell woods - sadly there aren't any around where I live....in fact not sure they exist in Australia at all.....I sometimes used to go to Chaddesley Woods...where are yours?
That was a great play, ended somewhat suddenly though.
Very interesting story. Thanks
Enjoyed this, but if someone could explain the ending to me, I would appreciate it. Thank you😊
Beautiful story. It took me through my mother's dementia. I wish I had listened to her. Thank you.
I think she was telling her daughters stories from when she was in the asylum/hospital. How she discovered all these plants she had never seen & looked up their names in a book. I think the sisters & the soldier were also patients of the hospital.
Could it be that she was taken by the fairies, the daughters were told she was in hospital but she was just gone for two years.
The mother was telling stories and was good at doing different voices. The daughter actually heard her mother when she thought it was someone else.
Oh if only dementia suffers had as much clarity as the mother
My poor mum has hallucinations where people live in cupboard and I often find her hiding under the duvet because mum thinks the tv is a window now and then
It’s so hard as your are grieving the loss of your mother while looking after a strange version of your mum
I’m grateful to my husband it’s so hard to stay calm though 24/7 and mum falls allot she has a traumatic brain bleed and 7 skull fractures a years go
If your mum is still your mum talk to her tell her you love her xx
Thank you😊
nice one Arch
Thank you for sharing this great drama on here 😀
I'm glad you like it
Excellent. Thanks.
We ALL love you Archie 💕💕👏👏👏🇬🇧🇬🇧
Here, here David! Always enjoy seeing your thoughts. Blessings & happy listening kindred! Nashville, TN
Question for you Arch. Do you ever sleep? Lol. It’s like you resented being shut down so now you’re coming back double! I’m impressed and I don’t impress easy!
Sometimes :- )
Loved this!!!!
I literally have 10 minutes left. I may be a little scared 😬 don’t know if I can finish it.
Thankyou
Adorable story about getting old.
Compelling after a slow start. Arch thank you. 🥰 Please don’t disappear again😨
i dont get it but at least it was interesting and not the usual radio drama
The end is missing, how annoying! Can you at least write down the last words?
Oh thank you for the warning. I'm out.
Lovely, had to stop what I was doing to listen. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great drama..
Warning: If you’re interested in knowing how the story ends you’ll be unfortunately DISAPPOINTED - the end is CUT OFF!
Daughters : mother is the prototype of your future. Be kind.
I'm on my own. After almost 5
months of shielding for health reasons, hoping for a vaccine asap. Thanks for these dramas but I'm leaving this one now as it promises to be depressing ...
Hate when the ending is missing!!! 😡
I googled the title and found a couple of full versions on YT..
I would post a link but YT usually deletes comments with links.. 🤷🏻♀️

I developed dementia whilst listening to this play. There was some great pointers which helped tremendously.
So lovely 😊 ta xxx
Poor old Eric .
That was lovely ❤
wonderful story. ending is the pits. there’s not even a split second between the last syllable of the story and the announcer butting in. not a split second!!!! bang! no more fantasy! bang! you can’t enjoy the feeling of the end. BBC ought to be ashamed! :P
Sorry! Can't listen. Too distressing. So very many of us have these situations and decisions!
I understand 😔🙏🏼❤️
The end was cut off. I didn't get it.
