Debating between the 24" new Hudson bay and the 24" woodcraft pack axe. Thoughts? How do they compare?

    • @jonspencer7004
      @jonspencer7004  2 года назад +1

Well, I don't have both at that length. I have 23" woodcraft and 19" Hudson.
I prefer a 19" axe for my use...and I prefer the Hudson Bay overall. My preferences are primarily based on the bit profile. I like a fatter, old school bit that lends to both chopping and splitting. I love the flat grind on the woodcraft, but the profile lends more toward chopping.
I think the bit profile of the Hudson is more versatile. All of this is my opinion based on my use and preferences. Your mileage may very.

@@jonspencer7004 Honestly, I prefer basically everything about the pack axe, but would you say it is worth the extra $80-$100?

@@michaelr425 I'm going to leave that one to you.
But a few thoughts before I do. There's nothing magical about an expensive axe. It's a block of steel put on a piece of wood.
5160 IS technically "better" than 4140 and you will get a "premium" haft on the pack axe...
Honestly both of those differences are nearly inconsequential when it comes to the function of the axe. I'm wagering that while I'm sure there is a difference in cost of materials, that difference is marginal.
I could be wrong, but I'm confident that the extra $80 is primarily marketing. It's $80 more, because you want it, and can afford it. Truthfully I think that's all it is. Gransfors and Wetterlings were all the rage, and there was a huge market demand for those fancy axes with the bushcraft craze. Council needed a place in that market for 1000 reasons, and were lucky enough to land Craig Roost to do it for them.
The value is always what someone is willing to pay. If you like it, want it, and have the money... then get it.
      Is it worth it?
Are Nike's worth $200 when they cost like $.30 to make?
To those that like it, want it, and can afford it...yes, because of the market.
Outside of the market? No...its still a piece of metal on the same hickory stick. It won't do anything the Hudson Bay won't do...
But it sure is satisfying to have a tool you love:)

Your dad said he hadn't seen it either... head came loose second time I used it. I'm not thrilled about that, but it doesn't take away from the design

@@jonspencer7004 both my council tools, head came loose after 5 minutes.
luckily an extra metal wedge has fixed the issue on both for now so no biggie, but was surprised they both came loose real quick.

I like the look of the classic Hudson Bay a lot but I never carry one in the bush. That new design looks much more like a tool I would carry myself or gift to an enthuisiast.

Well, you just saved me some money. I like the classic design for its oversized, heavy head. I used mine a lot for crafting and carving. My dumb cousin borrowed it and used the back to hammer a rock, and cracked the eye. Guess im getting a snow and nealley.

Or go with the woodcraft. Its an awesome tool. Hardened poll solves the issue.

Is the Back (pole) hardened? Does it come with a sheeth?

    • @paulhomsy2751

No sheath, just a protecting rubber but the poll is tempered (hardened) and can be used to hammer.

That is no longer a Hudson Bay. Haven't ever had an issue with the real Hudson Bay pattern, people just need to pull their heads out of the dark stinky place.
Not a fan of Craig Roost either, or whatever his name is.

Well, nobody said the original HB was a bad design... but this is an improvement.

@@jonspencer7004 yea...no it isn't. Me, like many others over the years this design has stood, haven't had any issues that were any different from any other axe design. In reality the design doesn't have any issues that other axes don't, in real world use. All I see is another dead end attempt at reinventing the wheel.
This new "design" is not a Hudson Bay any longer and it never will be.

@@turtlewolfpack6061I've never had a problem with the HB either, big deal. You're entitled to your opinion. Feel free to not consider it a HB anymore. Regardless, imo this is still a better design.

@@jonspencer7004 it is more akin to a Montreal Pattern without the slight upward sweep of the bit. Other than that it is an exact copy of a Montreal. If anything this is a poorer copy of the Montreal because of the lack of the before mentioned edge design.
