    As a german I still own a council tool pack axe in 24“. For my application - mainly bushcraft, working with dead standing wood and such - I find this to be everything I want from a packable axe. The 90 degree spine with phantom bevels is also really great for shaving dead wood and getting really fine tinder. I find the 5160 and the heat treat that CT does on them to be very good. I think the gransfors are really too hard and are not easily files. Heard they got better in recent years. I also find your Video to be a great review because you issued that warning. When I started using axes like 10 years ago I had just read mors kochanskis books and then continued on reading US forestry manuals before ever picking up an axe and practicing in my backyard first. I think it is very sad that some people just pick up a tool like an axe and blindly copy what they see lumberjacks do in movies and get hurt. Thanks for your video!

    I like your philosophy on a one do it all knife and this knife looks great.. Anyway is this still at the top your do all knife list or would you rather grab a knife like the Amish Jon that just came out recently idk if you've tried that one :)?

    • @jonspencer7004
      @jonspencer7004 Год назад

      Well, everything is a trade off. The Amish Jon has better edge geometry because of its dimensions alone, so not only is it inherently a better chopper, its also a better carver. The downside for Amish Jon is that, because of those dimensions, unless you're a big guy...its not exactly a belt knife. The OG is robust and portable... even an average 5'9 guy can belt carry it. It's robust nature adds to its chopping, but detracts from its carving, making it "ok" in both, but you're gonna have it on your belt, and a belt carry is far more convenient than baldric. So depends on what you like.

    • @teddydavid2816

      @@jonspencer7004 absolutely that sounds good that's a great breakdown and for sure there always give and take.. and with the Amish Jon there sure is a lot of give :). but yeah I've been looking for a do all end of the world type knife like if you could only take one knife into the woods and try to survive etc just in case.. and I picked up the Amish John a couple days ago and I think it will do that task very well. Awesome work on that knife man I appreciate it, you, and your response 💪

    I have several Gransfors Bruk axes to compare to the Council tool camp axe. CT Csmp axe is a great axe that is going to give the Swedes a run for their money. It is in someways a better camp axe if you plan to use your axe as a mallet. The harden pole is a plus. The CT camp axe is also an excellent splitter. In my opinion this is a premium axe that comes shaving sharp and will be a hand me down. Beware if your buying on Amazon. Great video thanks. I did buy the extended G10 handle scale from TKC. I bought just the blade blank then added the scales and a leather sheath. I only paid about $10 more then if I bought the knife with the stock scales. Cost about $100 for knife blank and the extended g10 scale. Very nice deep carry sheath with Ferro rod holder was $39.00. Very happy with free shipping in two days. Great knife the g10 extended scale make the Esee 3 hand gripp a extra 1/2 inch but does not have as big a palm swell as the shorter handle scale in g10 and is more like the thickness of the regular scale on the stock Knives. If I did not get the extended scale the g10 would have a bigger Palm swell like the g10 scales on my Izula II did as it comes with a palm swell and are thicker then the extended Esee 3 handle scales and fill my palm pretty good for a little knife. I do like them both . I was able to buy the Izula II knife blank and then add the thicker contoured g10 scale and the knife was about $10 more then the regular stock ESEE Izula II with the stock micarta scales. The sheaths are great and made by JRE Industries and recommend them for quality and prices. I also bought the new contoured g10 scale, same size will fit the Esee 5 & Esee 6, with the pal swell from TKC for my new Architect line of knives in CPM 3V called the 6.5 Field Buddy knife made by Tops knives sold only through TKC. Very happy with the knife and all three of my knives are matching as they came with the neon gree & black G10 scales.

    Debating between the 24" new Hudson bay and the 24" woodcraft pack axe. Thoughts? How do they compare?

    • @jonspencer7004
      @jonspencer7004 2 года назад

      Well, I don't have both at that length. I have 23" woodcraft and 19" Hudson. I prefer a 19" axe for my use...and I prefer the Hudson Bay overall. My preferences are primarily based on the bit profile. I like a fatter, old school bit that lends to both chopping and splitting. I love the flat grind on the woodcraft, but the profile lends more toward chopping. I think the bit profile of the Hudson is more versatile. All of this is my opinion based on my use and preferences. Your mileage may very.

    • @jonspencer7004
      @jonspencer7004 2 года назад

      @@michaelr425 I'm going to leave that one to you. But a few thoughts before I do. There's nothing magical about an expensive axe. It's a block of steel put on a piece of wood. 5160 IS technically "better" than 4140 and you will get a "premium" haft on the pack axe... Honestly both of those differences are nearly inconsequential when it comes to the function of the axe. I'm wagering that while I'm sure there is a difference in cost of materials, that difference is marginal. I could be wrong, but I'm confident that the extra $80 is primarily marketing. It's $80 more, because you want it, and can afford it. Truthfully I think that's all it is. Gransfors and Wetterlings were all the rage, and there was a huge market demand for those fancy axes with the bushcraft craze. Council needed a place in that market for 1000 reasons, and were lucky enough to land Craig Roost to do it for them. The value is always what someone is willing to pay. If you like it, want it, and have the money... then get it. Is it worth it? Are Nike's worth $200 when they cost like $.30 to make? To those that like it, want it, and can afford it...yes, because of the market. Outside of the market? No...its still a piece of metal on the same hickory stick. It won't do anything the Hudson Bay won't do... But it sure is satisfying to have a tool you love:)

    Its a bad axe if compared to a 3Lb axe but they are impressive given their weight. Out of the box they are pretty bad and miserable to work with but once you thinned down the handle and reprofile the cutting geometry they are effective. This is true with all the Swedish forest axes. You gotta be reasonable with your expectation and also don't buy one they are way over priced.

When I look at the floor plan I understand that those on side have less headroom. How much space do you need for sleeping mat, if you use folding bed these could be bigger. I sleep even without sleeping mat just on canvas. Do you use a chairs? Maybe chairs and all four mats and stowe dont fit in it? Do you want to spend some time in tent or you just sleep in it wake up and go or enjoy outside. Because this is the reason why we go camping, not to spend time inside and play games on mobile but stay as much time out and tent use just for windless and dry place to sleep.

      You're thinking of this as some traditional car camping tent option...it is not. I don't do car camping, and neither are the people who consider this product. This is a basic shelter only. You will fit 2 people, sleeping on the ground, using their packs as a pillow, and a stove in this. That's it, and it will be tight. Not 3 people...not 4 people...just 2. A folding bed or a chair aren't even a consideration for shelters like this. This product is not designed for that kind of camping. They will not fit. You're not going to "hang out" in it. You will sleep in it, that's it. This is a basic shelter. The floor plan will tell you that. If you had any other inclination after looking at the plans, it simply proves my point even more about their exaggerated marketing.

    While I love my hexpeak 2 P UL for backcountry hunting. I also have the Megahorn XL 4P - mine came with a pole btw - but I am Not a fan. Used it two full hunting seasons. The tent stakes first off while light are terrible, they bend they dont hold in the ground. This is not a backpacking tent so dont include UL pegs for a large tent! The set up is slow no matter how many times you do it and if one slight tension or pitch is off you have to redo the whole thing. It also has a large footprint and does not manage wind well at all even if rocked down on edges. I was very concerned of tearing etc. The zippers have caught and misaligned since day one. Eventually it caught and tore part of the flap and this was easy normal zip process not forcing it. Overall I like the small tents Luxe has for hiking pole tents overall the Megahorn XL 4P I recommend one skip it.
