There is NO NEED for tech companies to make yearly releases. There should be 2 year cycle. Simple as that. Car manufacturers make 1 model usually 6 years, after 3 years they come up with "facelift".
Let's be honest, there is no need to update from 15, but even from 14 and maybe 13. Samsung is similar (a bit more improved, but still).
Phone releases are actually more like car releases. In the auto industry, there maybe a facelift every 3-4 years but their is always a new model released every year.
I think what the tech industry is experiencing is the commoditization of the smartphone. Gone are the yearly revolutions and evolutions but that’s ok.
As a device category matures, this is inevitable. For those of us were around during the early years we got to see historical developments that made the smartphone what it is.
Maybe some new technology, like AR/VR headsets, will show us a new way forward because the smartphone has become everything it will be…
Actually, there is no reason for anyone to upgrade a perfectly good phone for no reason. Your car analogy is incorrect. There’s a new Escalade every year. There’s a new model year car every year. Most people don’t trade their 23 Camry in for the 24 Camry because there’s nothing wrong with the 23.

Before the screen it is the megapixels numbers hype, 2020 I use Samsung S20Ultra 5G one of the most expensive Samsung phone to date with option of 60hz and 120 hz , no automatic and it make you choose, I use the 60 hz most of the time and it save my battery consumption and longevity ,it’s the screen and colour gamut that’s matters most for screen to be comfortable to look at

Steve created products and sectors within tech before it was a thing and people conformed around that. Right now apple is lagging in AI, for example, and it has copied Google and Samsung so many times in other areas, products and features, it's hard to count.

My PC monitor is 240Hz, 60Hz would drive me insane on an iPhone since I'm used to seeing 240Hz when I'm using my PC.

The cost is right to complete the transition 120hz, plus, whoever purchase the base model this year, it could be a good value proposition to trade in. Just my opinion, i may be wrong. I'm still holding on to my XS Max, still performing well ever since I change the battery at Apple authorised repair shop, and it's 100% now. Just that it heats up crazy when doing facetime with my family, other than that, it works business as usual as an iPhone.

If I'm not mistaken, these "Shot on Iphone" video production things are almost always a scene, which will be professional lit (not capable on the iphone alone) and still color-graded in post (not on the iphone alone) with a phone on a camera dolly and gimbal (not stabilized on the iphone alone).
Sure the video quality is great and saving in pro-log helps.
But this "Shot on Iphone" tag seems hella misleading when people may easily forget you are going need about 50k worth of other equipment to pull this off.

It didn't take long to get used to 60Hz becoz iphone won't force 120Hz always in any pro variants... So u haven't experienced what it feels to use 120Hz/144Hz screen always.

@@quokka7555 Both things? I don't have battery issues with the ProMotion, and it is variable. I tested turning it off and the screen was noticeably more choppy.

@@ericbarber3420 AOD I can see what notifications (via icons) I have just by glancing at the screen; no need to wake the phone. It also makes a good clock when I'm using full-screen on my desktop as well.
It's really quite useful and now that I've used it for a few years there's no way I'm not getting a phone without it.

60hz is a total deal breaker. All of my other devices are 120 or higher. 120 is a minimum. Otherwise I agree with you assessment the regular or Plus are the way to go this year.

I've been using iOS 18 on an iPhone SE 2020, personally, I think it's amazing! (Except the photos app). I haven't had any major bugs other than the alarm issue.

iOS 18 may seem messy to the average Apple user, but coming from Android the added customisation options was one of my primary incentives for me to try an iPhone. I never liked how limiting the software always seemed, and the day my iPhone got the beta drop it was so awesome seeing what iPhones could do now.

I am an iPhone 16 pro max user from Europe. I am lucky that I get every year the new iPhone from my work but at the same time not so lucky. I am literally getting nothing this year compared to last year. I could have stayed with my 14 pro max as the last two versions are redundant. Especially this year’s iPhone that I won’t have Apple AI until iPhone 17 launches because let’s face it, Apple AI for the US in 2025 means 2026 for Europe… Steve Jobs wouldn’t have allowed this to happen!

Its simple Jon Apple is doing too many things in my opinion. When Steve Jobs came back in 1997 they had over 350 products Steve cut all of those down to just 10 products. It allowed them to be more focused on quality over quantity. Except Apple is also doing all these services too.
I also think its partially an issue also perpetrated by the tech communities insatiable hunger for constant innovation or as you stated "change for the sake of change" because if the change isnt substantial people claim they are lazy.
But I think smartphones are just extremly mature there really isnt much else to do except foldables. Which is why bi yearly releases should become the norm.
The base model iphones this year are far more capable and feature rich than previous years devices and for the majority of people it's the one to get, especially in teal.

I couldn't agree more. Ios 18 added no significant *features*, stuff that actually makes us more productive, that saves us time. Nothing about it reflects Apple's "Think different" slogan, even Apple Intelligence for the most part is just a copy of what other companies are doing. The smarter siri with contextual awareness is the only thing that could be great about it, but we'll have to wait and see.
You’re right, unlike the miserable internet dregs who criticize Apple all day, their technology is fantastic and user friendly and does all the little things people care about correctly…. And even on the cheap models. But it’s starting to feel like they could be slipping soon, hopefully not. Taking a page from Elon and announcing stuff not even remotely ready. I also agree who cares about AI, most users don’t, so should be no rush or concern….

Truly don't get your hate for iOS 18. I have no issues with it. Yes being late with AI is embarrassing. But if they didn't announce it and have it come in the next 12 months, then what is the marketing pitch for the iPhone 16? Camera Control? Which sucks by the way on the Plus/Pro Max due to its awkward location in both orientations.
Also we all know the iPhone Air is coming next fall. I doubt many people will be complaining about boring iPhones at that point. And the following year (2026) the folding iPhones. Everyone chill out. It's one more year of a boring slab. The fun begins next fall.

With apple shipping the base models with 128gb of ram it makes the gap between the 256gb base and 256bg pro only $100. In what world is saving $100 worth all of the justifications made in this video. Even though I'll probably never use most of the new features it just makes sense to have the option and have the 120hz display.
The Camera Control button is superfluous and unnecessary. It's too fiddly and awkward to use. And I hate having to rest my fingers on the button when I pick up and hold the phone.

I want my IPhone Pro to feel “Pro”. I don’t want to have to use another device
I thought the same: I don’t need the Pro iPhone anymore.
Therefore, I bought iPhone 15 Plus last year. It is a nice phone, but the deal breaker (for me) is the lack of 5X camera. I could swallow the 60Hz screen, aluminum chassis, lack of Lidar… heck, I don’t even use the 0,5X camera that often.
However, the 5X is such a nice zoom for taking awesome landscape photos (I live in a picturesque mountainous area). The main 48MP camera on the base model is fantastic. But if you go past 3-4X zoom then it becomes too grainy…
The lesson is: no more base iPhones for me. At least until Apple decides to include a dedicated Zoom Camera.
PS. The Software problem was really worth discussing.
The iOS 18 photos app sucks so much. It’s always been one or the simplest apps. One of my favorites. I’ve been using the beta all year, and that change is the one I hate most.

I have the option to turn it on on my phone and I ended up turning it off.. after a few days I forgot what was so great about it til i turn it off.
Which dawn on me.. it's only looks silky smooth until i go back to 60hz which over time also seems fast until you go back 120hz. So I stopped caring about it
This video has positively influenced my opinion on the iPhone 16 base models. I'll still laugh at one's $900 60hz - the best on the market, mind you - but, considering I don't have a 120hz OLED phone yet, it's not as big of a dealbreaker to me as the absentia of Apple Intelligence. 😝💯
I haven't been impressed with iPhone innovation in YEARS, i've been just buying them out of habit almost every year. This is the first year, I was just like nah...I'll sit this out.
They slowly removed buttons, now we're supposed to get excited they're adding one back? wtf. Steve must be rolling in his grave. For me, there's been no exciting design since the iPhone 10. Camera's are cameras, all I do is lame tourist pics and vids, and screen cap memes. How many of us are creators that need all the camera bells and whistles?
I'm in tokyo at the minute, and I was trying to take a selfie with me and the Tokyo Tower in a shot. It was evening, but the pics taken with my iPhone 15 Pro Max all look horrible. It keeps doing that computational photography, and messing with the colors bs. I just deleted them. It's lame. I wish we could turn that computational stuff off.
Other creators should take note of Jern's style. He's not yelling and splashing endless AI videos behind himself. Just a person that knows what they are talking about talking like a reasonable person.
A salesman can twist anything. iPhone sales are down and Apple must think it's due to people only wanting the Pro but not being able to afford one so they pay JP here to endorse the regular 16. Look - the script isn't even written by him 🤔 Weird spin on iOS 16.. I think it's by far the best software update in 10 years. RCS, satellite texting, drastically improved calendar and phone app, way more customization, etc. What are you TALKING about JP?? 🚩🚩🚩
I always believed that Apple stopped being Apple when Steve Jobs sadly passed away You are just now becoming aware of it! I've watched every keynote but none came close to when Steve was alive! It is what it is and the only way forward

I think this will be the last generation where Apple uses ProMotion to differentiate between the regular and Pro iPhone lineups. I just can’t see them marketing an $800 phone with a 60Hz display in 2025-it’s absurd. I believe they’ll adopt a new Ultra design language to set apart the Pro models across the board, similar to what they did with the iPad Pro this year.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS, iOS has been buggy for years now and some bugs have existed for years but apple doesn't even bother patching these bugs, what a mess.
Starting to consider moving back to android if this continues, Innovation at apple has been stale as stale bread

I appreciate a lot of the new features but yeah, iOS has been accumulating so many persistent bugs that it’s starting to feel as janky as Android. Combine that with the fact that some of the new features feel so unpolished (tinted icons, Capture Button, etc.) and iOS is starting to feel quite unfamiliar and unreliable.
@@illhaveawtrplz yh totally agree Tim Crook is more focused on making the shareholders happy with iphone sales then to actually release great products, to make matters worst the iphone design barely changes and they have the cheek to still charge the same price.
Also so much AI talk in wwdc and the iphone event but still nothing out apart from betas.
People that buy an iphone 16 are still going to have the same OS as any other previous iphone since the only thing that differentiates them are the AI features and camera control or watever apart from that SAME OS for everybody frm XS to 16 😂😂😂 what a joke Apple.

Reviewers spend YEARS begging companies to add more of this, more of that, a dash of a professional camera. When they get them they’re like “I didn’t want THIS many features. I just wanted a phone that does everything but you gave us too much.”

If it only had a greater than 60hz screen. All my phones are 120hz. Alongside one of those, 60hz looks lame. For the cost it is a skip for me.

pro motion is scam for device that highly priced. you’re not looking at the bigger picture here pricing in USA is great, but in other countries its a ripoff (some base models pro even go upto 2000$)so many of the fans and passionate people have to take the base models because of that.

Wholeheartedly agree. Software should be the main focus, especially with how mature the hardware is these days. iOS hasn't felt polished and there hasn't been much innovation in software in quite some time. It's sad to see Apple drift away from what made them Apple.
4-7 years into the future we will look back at the iPhone 16 lineup as pretty good compared to what we got in the future.

This isn't the first time Apple announces new features and releases them later. This has been happening not only at Apple, but increasingly in the industry, easily for the last 5 or so years.
Also, what's the issue with the newest features being available on older phones which support iOS 18? I don't get this guy and this "rant". Makes no sense.
