      @@vidyajamesuIndeed, this mindset is unsanitary and immature. A lot of competition? How will you incentivize it when the huge corporations have solidified power? Best you can do is to innovate in other sectors and also hold the giants accountable via the government. Good unions also hold the companies accountable so that the workers don't get treated like slaves. And even then, it's not secure that good unions last. If the company isn't seeing max profits while a union exists, then the shareholders will replace the CEO with another that is anti-union and bust it up.

    About the French activist: He used the normal webpage for the email, which is why Proton had to give his IP address to the authorities. Proton does operate a TOR service, where you can access your email without your IP address being exposed, so if he would have used that, the authorities would be left empty-handed.
    Furthermore, Proton's yearly transparency report does state how many government requests they received, how many they contested, and how many they ultimately complied with. You cannot operate a company in a western country without abiding the law, but I think in this regard, Proton is as good as it gets.

    • @amunak_

      THere's been others caught by leaving a recovery email that then leads to another service they can obtain information from, eg: using a GMail as your recovery or a phone number.
      This generally doesn't bother general users like the majority. But if you are an activist or posting things that can likely get you into trouble, such as whistleblowing, you should really be looking into how to create complete new online identities and not be using that hardware or your home network for anything else.

    • @thepurplesmurf
      @thepurplesmurf 11 дней назад

      To add to this. Proton has published a statement back then, when this "drama" happened, that this French activist was also informed that his activity must be logged by court order and he still continued as if nothing happened. Obviously felt too save or had a wrong idea of being invincible. So in my book the only one who has to be blamed is the French guy and nobody else.

    Proton is a great company, don't get me wrong.
    But true privacy is always in self hosting all of these services yourself. As well. You're the one in control of it. A good VPS is only about 5 bucks a month (depending on the provider).
    Or have control over the hardware as well, and self host it at home, for free. apart from electricity and internet.

    • @alexisdumas84
      @alexisdumas84 3 месяца назад

      And a VPS won't work as a VPN, because you'd be the only person using that VPS as a proxy and not only that, but Anyone watching any site you might want to disguise your visit to could easily take your VPS's IP address and trace it back to your account on whatever company like DigitalOcean or whatever you got the VPS from and from there get your PII trivially.

Proton Mail is expensive because of the rest of the features. I have VPN, I have cloud storage, I have a password manager. I intend to keep using those, and not switch to the Proton features that are included. I don't care if its only a 1 euro discount... its the principle. This kind of behavior is not something that fits in my definition of consumer friendly. Also arbitrary limits like having 15 e-mail aliases in the unlimited plan... thats not unlimited and there is no reason to limit them on the highest tier subscription.
