You just made my day im restoring repairing a 1868 Yale And Towne antique steamer trunk and I want to make sure how to properly get her lid from hinges and the end caps off to spray paint today thank you so very much
Very cool tip! Been looking for a reasonably elegant solution to this. The hinges on my door are at least 45 years old -- not 'screw-on' and the maker is no longer in business.
Hey Doc, one question keeps ringing around inside my empty head. --- For an interior area door (not high-security) - *Why would anyone want to replace the bottom plug?* Joe S
Thank you so much. Building a home made deer stand and all the hinges I could find were this design. Looked on RUclips and Bingo ! ( Put them in a vice before installing - instead of Vice Grips ) You're the Man, Doc.
CAUTION! I just bought three nice National Hardware stainless-steel door hinges that only LOOK like the older "bottom cap" hinge in this video. In mine, however, the cap with the hole in it is swaged in place, preventing removal with vise grips (or almost anything else). Fortunately, when I looked inside that hole with my headlamp, I could see the end of the main hinge pin farther down inside the hinge. I simply inserted a 10D nail into the hole, set the "short" edge of the hinge across the miter-gauge channel in the top of my table saw, and tapped the head of the nail until the main hinge pin started to come out. I then finished removing it with a pair of pliers. (It came the rest of the way easily.) Hope this helps.
Thanks for the assistance, Doc. Haven't run into these double cap door hinge pins yet. And would you believe only on my master bedroom door in my own house? Thanks again.
I'm a woman with not much strength. Is there a way to do this without the vice grip? If not, how hard is the vice grip to lock down? You grunted when you locked it, so it seemed like you had to use a lot of strength to do so. Please advise, thanks.
How about at the end of the process, I don't replace the cap? What is the point of the thing anyway? Thank you very much for this video, it saved me a lot of grief.
Im having an issue with an older door that has the cap but it has extremely flat bottom caps and they were hammered in tight... been fighting the damn things for 2 days and have given up any tips?
Why remove the cap on the bottom. Most are center drilled. Use a pin punch from the bottom with the cap in place or with your method use the vice grips on the pin instead of the bottom cap.
To make it worse, mine had a TINY hex screw in the center of the hinge which makes it impossible to punch the hinge pin out. You have to remove the rice-sized screw in order to remove the pin… after you remove the cap at the bottom. SO STUPID!
Isn’t there a hole in the bottom cap? Looks like it. You usually pound the pin out by putting something through that hole in the cap. No need to remove it first.
Thank God there are people like you who take the time to make a video like this! It’s practically a public service!
Thank you for the great video. More importantly, thanks for making 2:30 and not a 10 minute video on a 2 minute job.
Thank you. Head scratcher for me. Didn’t even know this was a cap. Saved me a lot of hassle. Much appreciated.
Never cease to be amazed how many great people post useful pointers. Great little video Man! Thanks
Working on a last minute project for the hubby- this video saved the day!! I can't be more thankful!!
Thank you Doc!! I have a hired "door carpenter" here that did not know how to remove this type of pin. Your video saved the day.
Yep, this handyman is doing this today for a customer, now I'm an instant pro!! Thanks.

Just saw these with the cap for the first time yesterday. Had to leave a fridge sitting in the carport. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the instruction! Saved my date! By the way, the bottom cap is a stupid design, just to make our lives more difficult.
Awesome! A BIG thank you! I wasn't aware of the cap. My hinges even had a cap on top as well. Once removed it was easy.

That was so much easier than any of the ways I have seen! The hex wrench suggestion is very nice!
Amazing tip. Worked instantly on a very old and rusted hinge.
Thank you for your service. My son said "Why go to college? everything you need to know is on RUclips."
THANK YOU!!!! This was literally the easiest things to do after I watched your video. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you. I was wondering about the best way to get the bottom cap off. Worked great.

Thank you sir. I’ve never seen one of these hinges before and you made it so easy!
Glad I could help!
Would this work on wheelchair ramp and if not how can I remove the hinges from a wheelchair ramp.. thank you
27 people gave thumbs down?!!! WTH... This was a great tip.
Many thanks! That was driving me nuts. ( Why do people fix things that aren't broken?)
You made it where my couch fit through the door way. May rainbows shine on your head
I live in an old house and the hinges had been painted over..multiple times. Luckily I was able to pull the hinge from the top using vice grips!
You are awesome! I’m fixing my interior garage door and it has these hinges!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks. Knocked out the job in 3 minutes
Do you have to put the bottom cap back on
Thanks bro. Every video I watch assumes there's no stupid bottom cap.
BEST VIDEO....
Just finished watchin 3 others, didn't even mention the bottom pin.
There was no reason for an interior door hinge to not just be able to be taken out with a screwdriver

Is the cap on the bottom asthetics or does it serve a valid reason to exist?
Can I use a hinge pin door stop with this type of hinge?
You got right down to the "stupid" (right word) problem. Thank you. Got 'er done.
Well done. Was really puzzled by this until I saw your vid. Thanks.
Great piece of DIY information. Thanks Doc
much appreciated, thanks! old faded white door is now a beautiful deep red :)
Great tip, thanks!! I was struggling with it before I watched your video.
So bomb.
Thanks so much.
I am going to try this.
Thanks! Big help with removing my Gatehouse hinge pins.
awesome video, I usually put painter tape or electrical tape on the bottom so you sent scratch it.
Thank you! I have ONE door like this. The other doors don’t!! Wasn’t sure what to do
Excellent advice! Thank you very much!!!
This really helped me to prepare to install my cabidor 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you. This was very helpful. Much appreciated!
How about at the end of the process, I don't replace the cap? What is the point of the thing anyway? Thank you very much for this video, it saved me a lot of grief.
Perfect, thanks! Simple and clear. :)
Thank you so much!! Makes sense and it's a great and easy way. Stopped my frustration!!!

I never knew that and have been struggling with it. THANK YOU!
Can you show us the Baldwin floating hinges? thanks
great tip. Mine have a top and bottom cap and a hard steel pin in the middle which I could knock out
That was awesome and extremely helpful!
WOW 🤯. Thank you sooooooo very much. Thank you.
Thank you for your video, very helpful!
This worked brilliantly! Thank you!
I like this. Off to try it now! 👍🏻
Stupid indeed! Especially when there are no instructions. Thanks a bunch. Saved me from scratching up my new hinges.
Im having an issue with an older door that has the cap but it has extremely flat bottom caps and they were hammered in tight... been fighting the damn things for 2 days and have given up any tips?
Any luck? I'm dealing with the same thing. I can't find any tips or tutorials to remove a cap that is flush that you can't grip with vise grips.
@@timhill5426 It might be non-removable riveted pin hinge...
Much appreciated although mine were rusted in solid haha so off to hardware store to get 4x hinges!
Worked like a charm
great job , sounds so easy thanks again
Brilliant, minimalism is best.
never heard them called hex wrench we call them "allen keys" in europe but thanks for info
I grew up calling them Allen wrenches. Or Allen keys. Even in America we call all kinds of things different names.
Thanks, I felt very stupid not being able to remove the pin with my hammer and screwdriver, since there is no space for the screw driver
Very helpful. Thanks!
quick and simple, thank you
Excellent tips; thanks!
if the cap on top pops up after a while do i just hammer it down?
Worked like a charm.
Brilliant Doc! thank you
Thanks doc, much appreciated
Worked!
Thanks - helped me big time quickly.
Very helpful! Thank you so much!!!
