Here's a little tip that can make this a bit easier. With the door closed, push a wooden shim (they're usually in the shape of wedge) under the bottom of the door at the edge with the striker until it's just snug. This takes the weight of the door off the top two hinges. Now pop the top two hinge pins like you do in the video. Use your hammer to drive the shim further under the door, lifting the striker edge of the door. Lift it just enough to enlarge the gap at the top where it's sticking and close the gap on the hinge edge. This will cause the knuckles (attached to door) to be off by exactly the amount you need to bend them. Bend the knuckles like you show in the video until they line up, and -- with the shim still in place -- you should be able to slide the pins back in with no resistance. Pull the shim, and the door should be perfectly aligned. You used the shim to move the knuckles so that they showed you exactly how much they need to be bent. No guesswork needed!
Let me share a little story. I hired some “contractors” to install a Prehung door. They tore a hole in the side of my house and tried to put the new one in but in the process slightly bent the frame. I promptly fired them and figured out how to seat the frame but the door was now rubbing like this one. We were at wits end when I stumbled on this gem of a video. If I could hug this guy I would. I wasnt able to shut the door without severe effort but thanks to this amazing guy I was able to seat it and save the day. This 6:05 minute video saved the day for me. You my man are a gift to earth and keep being awesome.
Thank you. I’ve seen a similar video on bending knuckles and was concerned about the hinge would be out of alignment. This video was an exact match to my situation, and walked me through each step and showed hinge alignment and effective door movement. I tried this method which required both top and middle hinge adjustment and it worked; probably no friction door operation in at least 23 years. Once again, thank you.
Thank you for your door knowledge we have had a sticking door for the past 15 years .After watching your video the door now open and closes without sticking. You are awesome thank you

This works great, I did have to use vice-grips as the regular adjustable wrench would slip. In only a few minutes, the door opens and shuts and the door lock mechanism aligns/engages with the jamb portion like it should. Thanks for posting !
Excellent video. I'll try this technique on the door to my garage. I only wish I had seen this earlier as I had another door that this would have worked on and saved me a lot of time sanding the top of the door in order to get it to close. Well done!
I have the same problem with a door at my house… I was ready to shave the door with a plane….. this is such a better remedy….!!! Thanks for the tips….!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Watched this video and fixed our bathroom door in the middle of the night I’m about to freak my husband out because he spent days trying to figure it out. 😂
We moved into our house in 2019 and the previous owners did not take care of anything. Needless to say we have had our hands full with changes and fixes. One thing was the garage door leading into the house. We had to slam it hard as the top half was rubbing a lot. I just tried this and decided to check the door after doing only the top loop/knuckle... Low and behold it closes like normal now! I was afraid it would need to be shifted a decent amount and then the electronic deadbolt would not lock properly but luckily that was not the case. Thanks a lot man! Almost 3 years of annoyance fixed in about 15min
Thanks man, l moved into a house with this door issue on the front door. Been dealing with having to lift the door up by the handle, to get it to close for months. Procrastinated on fixing it because I thought It involved expertise beyond my abilities..lol....it took 5 minutes to fix using your solution. Thank You!
This. *THIS* is THE RUclips video that FIXED my security door leading to my garage from not shutting! I took the door off to replace the door threshold seal that's located under the door to improve the weatherization...and after reinstalling the door to the hinges, it would NOT SHUT and it's been like this for 4 days. I couldn't do laundry or use my garage. This video did it for me. It was the same issue described in this video where the top portion of the door was banging against the door jamb and not shutting due to the top hinge needing to be adjusted. Despite going out and buying brand new door security hinges from Lowes and screwing them on exactly the same way the old hinges were aligned, it wouldn't shut no matter what I did. I didn't have a crescent wrench, so I used a vise grip and instead of using door shims, I placed a stack of sticky/post-it notes towards the top of the door against the door jamb. That allowed the door to be pushed as I adjust the new positioning of the knuckles of the top hinge using the vise grip (the same knuckles this gentleman adjusted) towards the door. Then I finally hammered the pin back into the top hinge and voila!!! the door finally closes. I can't thank you enough man.
Very good video! The cylindrical shaped segments of the hinge barrel are often called "knuckles" like the knuckles of fingers, as you might imagine a closed fist holding the hinge pin. I have been in the business of construction and handyman fixing for 30 years and have watched MANY youtube videos. I just watched 8 of your videos and they are among the very best and deserve more views. Maybe team with a more popular youtuber for shoutouts? Good luck :)
I have a door my kids used to hang on and swing when they were really young and I was not looking. I have put longer screws and tightened them up but now I can address it quickly and easily. Thank you. Great information and well presented.
Thank you for sharing, sir. Such a simple fix! My front door has been slightly off since we bought our house 9 years ago and driving me nuts. The slight sag made locking / unlocking the door more difficult than it should be. 2 minutes of your method and it is closing better than ever! Thank you!
hey @Craigmo900 , same issue, I tried putting longer screws int he hinges but didn't help, the door locking is being difficult for us and has been for a while, Do you have any tips in addition to the video, will try this week.
I skipped through the video the first time. Took a full watching for me to figure out that I was having so much difficulty because I was holding the camera in my other hand :D Thanks for the video; very helpful.
Thank you. This video helped me with my sagging front door which was reaching the point that it was beginning an entrapment hazard to my wife and children. It's been quite stiff for years, and that had been good for keeping my young son from getting out, but with all the rain and extra humidity of late, the wooden door was swelling and getting increasingly difficult to open.
I’ve tried tightening the hinge screws and even put in longer hinge screws with no success two years ago and finally gave up on trying to fix my front door. Just came across this video and tried this trick and less than 2 minutes my door was fixed and it doesn’t stick anymore. Thank you so much for posting this video 👍
@@retiredcryptohunter9031 I'm in almost exactly the same situation. I tried tightening the screws, got longer screws... Worked for a week or so then started hitting again. My next step was going to be to fill the problem hinge hole with wood glue and sawdust or something, then re-screw, but I think I might just simplify and try this since the rest of the screws grip fine.
Thanks for mentioning that you bend the "loops that belong to the door". Because the hinges on my sagging bedroom door are reverse compared to your door. The loops (or knuckles) of each hinge on my door that "belong to the door" are located at the top, bottom and middle of each hinge. So, there are three of them that need to be bent. This mean I would have to bend three knuckles towards the door knob. Or, alternatively, bend the hinge knuckles attached to the jam side away from the door knob if there is room for the crescent wrench. Right? From Minneapolis, U.S.A.
Yes, your assessment is correct. If you have enough space, try to bend the 2 knuckles towards the door-jamb to cause less stress to the hinge than bending the 3 knuckles towards the door.

Hey there, I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I was struggling with one door. Changed the door hinges and it got worst. Then I thought of looking in youtube, found your video and aaaaa! I just finished fixing it. Merci
Thank you so much for this video. I live in a rental property and though the door needs to be replaced eventually. (my rent is so low. I do most repairs myself) Never thought I’d be able to make that comment LOL) i’m also a 65-year-old woman who figures there’s nothing I can’t tackle unless it’s a major job! And with the other man’s helpful hints it’s perfect. I happen to have new hinges. I was going to put on and decided not to after seeing this video since this way I don’t have to keep the door open and the heat and humidity of NC. Yeah!!
Thanks for the video. i have had 2 doors with this issue and the first one i had to trim the frame, after watching your video i replaced the hindge and now its fixed.
peter d This generally resolves the issue for me. The standard Inch -/+ screws that come with the hardware are no where nearly enough to properly retain them over the years... why builders don’t automatically throw those tiny useless hinge screws away and run some 2 1/2 3 inch screws in them is absolutely beyond me.... well not reallyyyy beyond me.... time is money and having to walk away from your current task, god forbid *eye roll, would take as much time as the morning BS’ing and coffee finishing would....
I have 2 doors that were not closing. The latches were lower than the latch plate holes. The doors were sagged. So I used your tip to fix them. And now they close. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Close the gap in the bottom hinge and/or open the gap in the top hinge. If you only adjust the top or bottom hinge you might need to do the middle hinge about half the amount to keep everything working well. Having said that it's a bit of trial and error. GL.
A typical contractor would charge $100 to fix this, thanks for the videos, not even my carpenter repair book had this solution and I paid $35 for the Home Improvement 1-2-3 book from Home Depot!
So that's what's wrong with my door. My door shut perfectly, then I took it off to do some work. When I hung it back on it hit the door jamb and was hard to close. Thanks for the tip! I'll fix this tonight! John.
Thank you, I ended up having to mess around with the loops on my top and middle hinge, plus adjust the latch catch thing in the frame but my door is now smooth as butter
I loved it was slow and easy to follow along plus i made me smile love the way he talked loops lol also I'm just joking with ya, you had 2 tools a hammer too ahahha loved the video will watch again before I try and fix mine..thanks
Woohoo this worked thank you thank you! I used vicegrips instead of a wrench, and an allen wrench to knock up the pins, to not mess up my screwdriver tip. And I didn't need to mess with the middle hinge. Seems all fixed now 🙌
Here's a little tip that can make this a bit easier.
Great comment, thanks!
Precisely! Good addition, thanks

The house we've just purchased has a coat over literally everything. Taps, shower heads, tiles and all of the above. Layers upon layers of caked on paint. 👌
Hey there, I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I was struggling with one door. Changed the door hinges and it got worst. Then I thought of looking in youtube, found your video and aaaaa! I just finished fixing it. Merci
Great to hear it, and thanks for watching!
I was thinking of ways to fix one of our bathroom doors. Thanks for the great video and the FBI van that recommended it!
LOL, thanks for watching!
Yeah!!
Thanks for sharing.
The "loops" are called knuckles.
Thanks for your input!
I've heard them called barrels.
Where I work we also call them knuckles.
i like loops better
Thanks for the video.
i have had 2 doors with this issue and the first one i had to trim the frame, after watching your video i replaced the hindge and now its fixed.
Glad it helped, and thanks for watching!
It worked perfectly, I don't remember the last time the door opened and closed so smoothly, thanks.
Good to hear it, and thanks for watching!
Was gettin pretty frustrated trying to get my door to fit. Had this same problem. This worked. Great tip. Thanks.
Glad it worked for you too, and thanks for watching!
I was getting ready to shave the top of the door I’m going to try this first. Thanks for the video.
Good luck with your door!
I never knew this trick to adjust the knuckles! If this fixes my door issues you saved me so much time and effort.
Good luck with your door!
Wow, what a great tip. I have a door that needs this done. Thanks.
Good luck with your project, and thanks for watching!
All the other solutions didn’t help. This!!! This did the trick! Trying it on another door tomorrow. Thank you!!
Good to hear!
I've never thought about bending those. Great job

Great simple solution. Fixed four doors after watching this yesterday. Thanks!
Nice work, and thanks for watching!
This is awesome! I've always just grabbed a piece of 2x4 and smacked the door frame lol thank you
LOL, thanks for watching!
peter d This generally resolves the issue for me.
Outstanding video. Possibly the best I've seen on this technique. New subscriber!
Awesome, thank you!
Worked like a charm, thanks so much for these clear instructions.
Great to hear it, and thanks for watching!
I have 2 doors that were not closing. The latches were lower than the latch plate holes. The doors were sagged. So I used your tip to fix them. And now they close.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
Great to hear!
What should I adjust if the door is too high and hits the top corner of the door frame?
Close the gap in the bottom hinge and/or open the gap in the top hinge. If you only adjust the top or bottom hinge you might need to do the middle hinge about half the amount to keep everything working well. Having said that it's a bit of trial and error. GL.
Thank you so very much for your Video about this . I have had this problem for over 7 years now and could not fix it .. Thanks again ..!!!
Glad it helped
Some times the screws on the hinge are loose or if you put 3 1\2 inch screws will lift the door also 👍
one trick is to put wood glue on a toothpick insert into the screw hole that is now too big and then put the screw back in. Worked for me.
Tried this today on my front door. Wow, worked like a champ!
Well done, and thanks for watching!
The things that you are referring to as “loops” are know as hinge knuckles.
Thanks for your input!
A typical contractor would charge $100 to fix this, thanks for the videos, not even my carpenter repair book had this solution and I paid $35 for the Home Improvement 1-2-3 book from Home Depot!
Glad it was helpful, and thanks for watching!
Well, how about that! I know exactly what door I'm fixing tomorrow; thanks so much.
Good luck with your door project!
One of the best DIY fix videos I've seent to date. Great job explaining how to fix the hinges!
Glad it helped, and thanks for commenting!
It worked awesome, thank you so much, my bedroom door finally closes normally 😭👍
Glad you fixed the door yourself, and thanks for watching!
So that's what's wrong with my door. My door shut perfectly, then I took it off to do some work. When I hung it back on it hit the door jamb and was hard to close. Thanks for the tip! I'll fix this tonight! John.
NICE! I have one that’s doing the same thing. Now i know the fix.
Thank you!
Good luck with your project!
Thank you. Fixing my two 8’ tall doors with 4 hinges each. Having this problem for 7 years s since we moved in:)
Try adjusting just the top hinge, and see if it helps. Because it's pretty difficult to align all 4 hinges, which can make the problem even worse.
What if the door is rubbing on bottom right, Do you bend left in that situation?
Thank you, I ended up having to mess around with the loops on my top and middle hinge, plus adjust the latch catch thing in the frame but my door is now smooth as butter
Nice work!
As a carpenter of 40 years it's a temp fix you stress the metal and it is best to change the hinge
Shit pin hinges
Fixed a door that my cats were opening because the door wasn't latching properly. Thanks for the help!
Glad it helped, and thanks for watching!
I loved it was slow and easy to follow along plus i made me smile love the way he talked loops lol also I'm just joking with ya, you had 2 tools a hammer too ahahha loved the video will watch again before I try and fix mine..thanks
Actually, it's 3 tools if you include the nail, lol.
Good luck with your project, and thanks for watching!
Funny, I happened upon your video. My front door has been doing this and I was wondering about the fix. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Worked great for me on a large front door. Thanks for the tip!
Good to hear it, and thanks for watching!
I'm pretty good at adjusting and installing doors.... But this fix is new to me... Much appreciated 👍👍👍👍
Great to hear it, and thanks for watching!
Man, I wish I watched this video TEN minutes ago. I took a planer to the corner to fix my kids bedroom door. Now I know.
Well, I'm sure you'll have to deal with another door in the near feature. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! I've looked at other videos out there and this is the best I've found. Perfect!
Great to hear!
Rather than just guessing how far to bend it, you should put a shim where the door was sticking to get your target gap size
Thanks for your input!
Woohoo this worked thank you thank you!
I used vicegrips instead of a wrench, and an allen wrench to knock up the pins, to not mess up my screwdriver tip. And I didn't need to mess with the middle hinge. Seems all fixed now 🙌
Nice work!
It is good to know, I never thought about this before. I don't have this problem now but you never know!!! THANKS.
Glad to help, and thanks for watching!
