Another good method for misaligned hinges is to take the top two (or bottom two) hinge pins out, then shim on the striker side of the door to get a uniform gap. Then use an adjustable wrench to bend the hinge barrels into alignment with eachother. Doors close perfect and no squeak.

Thanks. As usual, I learned a thing or two. The issues Tommy addressed are ones that I encounter often. I found a tool that makes this work easier. I think it's called the Knucklebender, and it works for adjusting hinge barrels.
It can give some character yeah but keep it away from the sleeping areas. =P Our front door is super squeaky and we all like it that way, it tells us when people are coming and going.
My bedroom door has the same hinges that we installed in 2006 when my Pap built the house. They are squeaking mad and when I open my door early in the morning I can hear half the house wake up. Will be trying these methods soon, thanks.
A door squeak can also come from the door shearing against the door jamb molding. Be sure to check the outside edges of the door for contact with the door jamb or weather stripping. Latex paint or even varnishes can cause squeak when they contact the jamb. Look for paint wear and sand down to resolve the squeak.
Thanks (again) to Tom and the 'This Old House' crew for all the helpful tips over the years. I never would have thought about the hinge being slightly bent. But that's exactly what my problem was. Matter fact the hinge pin showed wear in the same corresponding spot. No more spraying some lube on it to only have it start squeaking again a few weeks later.
Had the same problem a few weeks ago…used lubricant and its A for Away. Might have to use this method in the future tho. Love the vids from Tommy & Kev xoxo
Thanks for the video. Will WD40 work better than oil? I have tried WD40 and oil, and WD40 last longer than oil without the squeaking noise occurring again. Appreciate your teaching on the hinge alignment.
No, WD40 will only attract dirt. I just replaced all the hinges in my house (color change). Before I installed I took them apart and lubed them with Permatex Ceramic Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant for car brakes as I’m a side mechanic. You can get it or a like brand at any auto parts store. That stuff works like nobody’s business and will last forever and it good for 3,000 degrees F. Haha 😂
Great tip! If it was an old wax ring you grabbed from a remodel job, you will have to add...'It will never dry out and never squeak... and never stop reeking!' Every time they open the door, they will get a puff ;p
The best solution I have found, besides redoing the door hinges alignment etc and spending time and money, is to use silicone past the automotive kind you'd use on brake caliper pins when doing a brake service on your car. It lasts forever and you don't have to mess around with the hinges. If you have a handy neighbor just ask them for a tad or your mechanic can hook you up... Bring a little container or ask if he has one of the little packets that sometimes come in a set if brakes. You can also buy the stuff, though if you don't work on your own car you'll probably never use it again. I use eze slide by kleen flo. Its basically thick dielectric grease. Hardware stores sell small tubes of dielectric grease but it's kinda thin and runy ... Heads up, this stuff is sticky/ messy so either be neat and use very little so you don't get it all over the place or have some brake cleaner and a rag handy to wipe the hinges clean. Basically any alcohol will get it off. Also a rubber glove would be suggested. I knock the pins almost all the way out . Put a glove on and a dab of silicone past on my finger. And coat each pin one at a time. Go back with a damp rag to clean up... Either soak rag with brake cleaner or methyl hydrate or any strong alcohol I've tried different things and figured I'd check if anyone has any ideas that I haven't tried. So far longevity wise , my way works. Though I noticed on a few hinges were I put a little too much, dust starts to stick to the hinge after a few years. So gotta go back to clean off with alcohol. Was thinking of a foolproof way and I guess it's either fidle with the higes to adjust them every few years or just use the caliper grease and forget about it. Anyway I hope this is useful to someone who has an older home and is looking for an alternative way to deal with the annoying squeak when the hinges start wearing in. If your home is pristine like a show room perhaps stick to fiddling with the adjustment as sooner or later the dust will find a spot to stick to if you use my method.. than you need to clean the hinges if you are bothered by it. Im a bit pedantic/ can't help but notice. You may not care. Every door will start to sag slightly with use. Either do to a crap install or the hinges wearing or both.
Sometimes the hinge is installed slightly rotated in the jamb mortise. I see this a lot with inexpensive (high production) prehung doors. Also, a warped door slab can cause a hinge to squeak.
I took out each pin, in each door, in my home, one pin by pin, cleaned each pin, thin coated each pin with Vaseline, in 2010, haven't had a steak since on any door.
Would've killed me at the end if they had zoomed out a second time, so that he was being asked by a second host 'so how often do you get asked how often you see this sort of thing?'
After using a spray lubricant that only lasted a few weeks. I took the pins out, one at a time, and put Vaseline on them. It's been about a month. Quiet so far.
Fixed it. The door was rubbing against the frame on the lower left corner. I had some "wood files". I removed wood until it was no longer touching there. Nothing other than the hinge should be touching.
I've just fitted first ever door and stopped some annoying squeaking straight away. It isn't too hard to work out what it is causing it if you listen and watch closely when moving the door. The hinges aren't aligned with each other usually. It was the case with mine, door frame isn't straight so that didnt help, so one hinge had to be brought out a bit with wood filler. This Causes resistance on the hinges which causes the creaking. The rubbings of the metal parts vibrate through the door, giving it the wooden creaking sound. Moving metal parts alone dont do a creak sound like a creaking door, it's much more of a squeak, so that's the wood giving it that creaky noise.
I had a CREAK, not a squeak in a 10-year-old door. Oil didn't help. Turns out when I framed the door I didn't include a screw toward the bottom . A 2 1/2 inch screw cinched it tight. No more creak.
What I was gonna say. Bad alignment caused the door to swing shut, or open on its own...and someone hammered the hinge to make it tighter. Normally you would hammer the pin, not the hinge. (Actually Tommy taught that trick in another episode).
Tommy solved the mystery squeak. I wouldn't have considered misaligned hinges--I would have "jumped to the conclusion" of a dry hinge that needed lubricant.
This is quite common where I work. Patients room doors (grab tops of doors to do pullups) and just high traffic areas. You can also "carefully' put your fingers on the hinge and pull it closed. The binding/squeaky hinge will vibrate. Realign by grabbing with v-jaw pliers. Great videos T.O.H.!👍👍
Had a ghost door. Bathroom door, 100 year old home. Open the door to leave the room, the weight of the door would swing it six inches. The squeak was the least of the problem. I shimmed the plate on the top door hinge. Cut out the right size from empty 1 lb butter box…coated, stiff, easy to cut with scissors. Used next size up length brass screws to replace. It worked for a time. Ghosts need the restroom. Problem swing came back. Everybody and his brother looked at this. Then…..he said, buy a screen door spring. Can I use one from the junk drawer to save three dollars? Sure. Cup hooks? Yes Been up for 8 years now. It takes the stress off the door which stays open. No squeak which is stress. Oh…use chapstick for the hinge pins. Good idea to remove to clean, but then use bottom of a used candle or chapstick before you put it back..
Can someone explain what those 'caps' around the door handles are used for? I never seen it before , I assume it has something to do with child/pet safety?
THE FOG IS COMING. THE FOG IS COMING. THE FOG IS COMING. THE FOG IS COMING. THE FOG IS COMING. THE FOG IS COMING. THE FOG IS COMING. THE FOG IS COMING. THE FOG IS COMING.
"I've redone my whole house" means he hired someone to do it while he did the grunt work and watched where his money was spent. BTW, he's got a young kind (down the hall) and I have to wonder if the kid does what all kids do.... hang onto the doorknob and swing back and forth. That will bend a hinge or two!
So I have a question. I did everything that was said and it solved the squeaking problem. But now every time I open and close my door, I hear screaming coming from inside the surrounding walls. How do I fix that?
What if you can’t get the pin out with a flathead? Mine won’t screw off at all. Also, it is safe to do this when you have a pet who lives in that room as 3 in 1 and Teflon may be toxic to animals?
Ok I’ve seen a lot of tricks and suggestions with cheap metal hinges but what can I do about solid brass hinges that don’t just bend. I looked at hinges and they appear to have the same issue with the misalignment and wearing on the barrel connections. The wood is oak and hinges are brass so nothing gives here. Please help, it’s our bathroom door right next to the 3 bedrooms so it’s used too much at night and early morning to just ignore. Thanks so much, Silas

Why not use norm abrams trick with the crescent wrench to bend the hinge ?
Thanks Dan Marino
Nice
Bastien I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.
