Love when Free opens up a set.
The thing about these lyrics is that most of them are written by Tom Marshall, Trey’s childhood friend and writing partner. So interpreting the lyrics as autobiographical about Trey’s personal life, while it might be a natural assumption with most groups, usually is not the artists’ perspective. Tom’s role as lyricist has helped their music have a different perspective, detached in a way from any personal ego while still able to describe very detailed and personal emotional states. Tom has a podcast where he talks about his perspective, as a part of the music and also a hardcore fan. Very interesting guy, worth checking out.
Mike Gordon and fisheye lens right up in his grill.
This album is among their best. Love the cover so much. Love the channel too! Farmhouse next! Or ghost. Sand! Big cypress, 12/31/99. The best one. (You won't regret it. The crosseyed and painless, down with disease, light up or leave me alone, Mike's song, are all heaters).
1996 was such a cool year. Every year of phish is unique, and 96 trey tone was special. So powerful. Like rushing water or an echo over a canyon. Theme is so cool. Check out 2/6/97 theme from the bottom for a cool one. They played a pretty cool one at MSG last year during the NYE run.
You might also consider reacting to the clifford ball on the Channel. Their first festival and absolutely stunning sound. My dad was there, they played a bunch of these songs.
This album was produced by Steve Lillywhite, and we have Dave Matthews to thank for making that connection.
Free is a song Tom wrote about imagining throwing his wife off a ship.
Yikes!! 😬
@@deepdivederekyeah, they were on a cruise together and she was annoying him, so instead of acting on his anger, he wrote a song about it. I think. Maybe so maybe not.
Finally we get to Billy Breathes, one of my two favorite albums
What's the other one? Rift or Ghost?
#1 Rift
#2 Billy Breathes
#3 Story of the Ghost (love the funk)
You have to set the video quality to the maximum in order for the audio quality to be at its best.
Principal O Shack Hennessy
100% Mike Gordan ❤😂
Waste was Dave Matthews' favorite song. They've have performed it together a few times
I saw him and Trey play it :) so cool
Free often opens shows
Zero often closes shows.
"Free" - most radio played song.
"Sample in A Jar" - I've heard got some college radio play. I've never heard it myself.
heavy things was a radio single and probably the song i've heard on mainstream radio most by the boys.
@@peterreist2882 Thanks. I believe I've heard this before. Not the song first hand, but rather it received air play. I'm ready to hear BBFCFMs
Derek, you're doing something different with the audio recently,, its been heavily degraded on your recent videos. any idea what it might be?
I haven't done anything different, but check it out. Thanks for letting me know!
it's "I ought to see the man mulcahey"
As I hear it, that must be pronounced Mul-Kay.
I'm guessing that's a real person? One of those Phish inner jokes they like to sing about?!
@@deepdivederek it could very well be a friend of the band but i dont know for sure. it could also just be syllables that work together. it is pronounced mull kay he though it could also be mull kay ee. side note trivia the priest on the show MASH was named father mulcahey.
@@deepdivederek When Trey and Tom were in the Cayman Islands, a crazy DJ on the radio kept shouting that line. What he meant by it has never been explained.
I heard that "Waste" is about a TV set. From that perspective, it is a waste of time.
That big nose you are making fun of is the one and only Mike Gordon!
Too…..much…..PAUSING!!!!!
You're gonna love the other two parts!
