  • It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the EZ-Flash Parallel Nintendo DS Flash Card. Basically, this is a cheap flash cartridge that allows the user to play most Nintendo DS games with nothing more than an SD card and a ROM file. Let's talk about it!

    It hurts to see the DS Phat referred to as old and dated looking. When I got it in 04 it felt so robust and classy. That was before i had ever seen a PSP.

    Adam, With the DS turning 20 in 2024, I'm reminded of an incident a few weeks ago, when I went to Burger King with my niece + nephew. There is a playground at this Burger King, because the building used to be a McDonald's. Anyhow, Instead of where the ballpit should be, there were 8 kiosks, not just any kiosks, mind you. These were SEGA Dreamcast kiosks, each with 2 controllers plugged in. I have no idea why this 1 particular Burger King has 8 SEGA Dreamcast kiosks with 16 controllers 25 YEARS after the console originally launched, but hey, it doesn't hurt to teach kids a little history, right?

    If you know how to look around you can get something cheaper, but if it's not in your comfort zone the EZ-Flash Parallel doesn't seem like a bad choice. The GBA carts have been pretty decent so this one seems to follow suit in the quality.
    I like the micro SD slot location a lot, since being on that side makes it not visible when slotted in the DS. No need to worry about the card being moved around while it's in there.
    My old R4 fell to the time bomb in it, I could get another one really cheap but this seems pretty neat though. More options are always nice and it seems to be working well so far.

      @robmalcolm8042 3 месяца назад

      Or android phone or iphone. Those probably come the closest since they are handhelds as well and samsungs in particular with the spen stylus. Also some emulators are super accurate. Like new 3ds is supposed to be native snes capable yet it cant even run a quarter of what snes9x or bsnes can run which each have 95 and 100 percent compatibility by the way. Not to include retroarch which allows me to play mario land just as well as a virtual console version on my new 3ds with no input lag. But despite it all i get it physical and native is still great and some just dont care about emulators because of the perception its fake which is definitely not true lol. But not too many are that knowledgeable about what a emulators true point is. As for 3ds i think its a system that should be considered having the actual console cause even tho 3ds emulation has got alot better its not stabile or good to the point of how ds or gba emulation is.

    The FPGA used in the Parallel cart only has 8,640 Logic Elements, a size so small that it's probably being used to simulate the hardware that used to be used on older model flash carts. It just doesn't have the oomph for anything else.
    What is does have is the ability to reduce manufacturing costs for EZ-Flash by reducing the total number of parts required to be soldered onto their flashcart. It also makes it easier for them to remotely reconfigure or patch the cart hardware itself via firmware updates. A lot of electronics manufacturers go the FPGA route just for that purpose.
    In other words, no it's not going to be used to emulate anything outside of that and there's nothing really to see here. That said, I own one and it works just fine. It lives in a DS Lite and is just used for DS games.

When the R4 became a thing, for Christmas that year, I showed my mom tons of videos, pictures and forum posts with proof it's real and told her I would never need to get any expensive games ever again. The more videos and pictures she saw, the more she was convinced that third world bootleggers were posting all these as a grand conspiracy to trick people like me.

I installed the DLC as well, and low and behold-I was running Mechassault+DLC in 640x480 30fps... Mostly, turns out the NVS 2100M (at least in DX9 emulation) runs about the same as an OG Xbox.
