- Gabriela Montero wird mit dem Musikpreis 2018 des Musikfestivals »Heidelberger Frühling« geehrt: für ihre großen Leistungen als Musikvermittlerin, als Meisterin der Improvisation, für ihr politisches Engagement für ihre Heimat Venezuela.
Hier ist sie in einem Rezital vom 17. März 2014 in der Stadthalle Heidelberg zu hören, das im Rahmen des »Heidelberger Frühling« stattfand. Sie spielt ihre berühmten Improvisationen zu Melodien, die ihr Konzertbesucher vorsingen.

Gabriela is a wonderful gift to humanity. As mentioned by herself in an interview, during improvisation an MRI scan has learned that she uses her visual cortex and the parts responsible for the 'regular playing' are dormant. How special is that!

Gabriela es de una genialidad absolutamente alucinante. Dudo que haya habido genios musicales de este calibre en toda la historia de la humanidad. Incluidos Mozart, Lizt, Chopin, Rachmaninov. Para improvisar, digo. Crear algo sobre la marcha, con tantos recursos rítmicos, melódicos, armónicos. Por supuesto que se monta sobre los hombros de todos esos genios. Pero alza la vara a niveles nunca vistos. Inalcanzables. No solo de técnica, por cierto: de puro placer. De puro gozo. De cielo. Un pedazo de cielo. De paraíso, en la tierra. Gracias, Gabriela. Pero me perdonas: doy más gracias a Dios por habértenos regalado. Al mundo entero y a cada uno de nosotros, hermanados en una sola familia al vibrar en la misma sintonía, que compartimos sin estar completamente conscientes de ello, pero que contigo aprendemos a reconocer, por un lado, y a amar, por el otro: amarnos a nosotros mismos, a los que comparten esa dimensión, a quien la viabiliza voluntaria, abundante y generosamente (a ti, Gabriela) y al Creador de tanta belleza y tanta realidad que te golpea en todas tus entrañas, que es sublime, que sublima nuestra "tierra", y la eleva al cielo. Es realmente impresionante, pero los grandes maestros improvisaban. De hecho era una práctica común que por ejemplo Beethoven en un concierto presentara un par de nuevas obras y que luego improvisara sobre temas conocidos, lo mismo con Mozart o J.S. Bach, Liszt o Chopin igualmente, Saint-Saens y tantos otros!
