This music is from another world - the world of goodness, beauty and truth. Thank you, Gabriela, for letting me spend an hour there.

0:00 Moderato, B-flat major in 3/4 (a la Schubert, but subtly different, more rhythmically complex)
    3:17 Adagio in 5/8, B-flat major
7:22 Moderato, g minor in 3/4 with perpetual motion, first chromatic bass line (returns later!)
10:45 Berceuse in E-flat (3/4) my favorite of all, possibly the most delightful 3 minutes of music I've ever heard
14:13 Adagio in g# minor, alternating 3/4 and 4/4 another favorite, see transcription:
18:56 Allegretto in g minor, more contrapuntal, articulated, Bach-like, but with shifting meter
21:17 B-flat minor, meditative, wandering, lots of arpeggiations
    24:33 E-flat minor, 9/8, also very meditative
27:20 More French, Debussy-influenced, wandering modal beginning, settling into B-flat major
30:12 Parisian waltz in E-flat major, exquisitely graceful and elegant
33:48 G minor for the RH alone, 3/4 (returning to chromatic bass from earlier),
36:14 G minor 3/4, combining the chromatic bass and the main theme from RH alone piece above
39:31 6/8 in E-flat major, again with French influence (but more counterpoint :))
43:18 Decorative and free, ambiguous tonally, metrically for the first half or so, rhapsodic, E-flat major
46:54 E minor! Spanish influence? Very dark, with a nod to Chopin (?) descending diminished chords at the end
52:18 4/4 Adagio in E minor, very meditative, perpetual motion in 8th notes, some cool harmonic shifts (F minor at 53:08??), fades off into nothingness...
57:22 an introverted waltz in E minor

Please miss montero if you see this : take us through your process, how you work your improvisations, how many glasses of wine I need to drink to get to this level ??!! I love your style so much !

Thank you, Père. I wish I could tell you there was a process. But there isn't. In fact, I never studied harmony, theory, composition or any of it. I just started doing this when I was about three years old, and that's all I can tell you. I get out of the way, and let it happen. Definitely try after a couple of glasses of wine! Why not? Either way, just sit down and play, without questioning yourself. Just let go. Good luck! Gabriela

I consider myself lucky to have seen in person such renowned pianists as Van Cliburn, Argerich, Thibaudet, Ax, and as of yesterday, Gabriela Montero. Why she chose to grace the little town of Amherst, Massachusetts with her gifts escapes me, but I am so very grateful that she did. As excited as I was to watch her perform, the event actually exceeded my expectations. It was an interesting program that began by contrasting Schumann and Corea pieces themed around childhood, and ended with a sublime improvisation on the Beatles "Yellow Submarine." As summed up well by another audience member, "What an experience!"

Gabriela, if only you knew how greatly you enrich our lives! I have been listening to you playing for years, constantly blown away. Yet, I have to say this format, does bring something new to the table: I can easily see many of these pieces be written down and used by piano teachers and students. Not only are they soul-touching and incredibly beautiful, but they are also pieces that demonstrate how to develop phrases and harmonics and I could easily see myself, as an amateur player, enjoy playing many of these, and learning a tremendous amount from them. Spectacular!
