You're a hero for taking the time to put this together. Thank you so much. I am gearing up to do my phasers in a week or two and this is insanely valuable. You rock.
Has anyone heard of or tried the screw on oil filter adapter from Baxter performance Parts in which they claim it helps by holding some oil in place by means of a check valve that helps with cold starts pre oiling?
You’re amazing. I am 75% into my cam phaser job and have referenced your video multiple times. Thanks for your calm and cool approach to this - it has helped me a lot. Cheers.
Book time on my 18 F150 3.5T phasers, chain, water pump, etc (with some minor exceptions, the job you spelled out here) was 18 hours. I came in right at that with your guidance and I took my time over a 3 days stretch to let things cure before starting and cleaning up. Thank you ever so much for taking the time to compose this and to all of you wondering, this is spot on instruction. Follow this step by step and you will cure what ails your beast. Now on to fishing!

I'm glad i found this video mine. I just started making noise, and im not paying 5k for someone else to do it. Thanks for the video i know it took time to make
Thank you for this very detailed video. Definitely helped tremendously. I hit a few snags that really added time to this job. The left intake phaser was the culprit and the intake cam had major micro spalling on the lobes closest to the phaser. The other lobes on the intake and exhaust cams had the same issue just not as bad. Replaced everything. Also, this job was done at a dealer three years ago under warranty and the phasers were torqued down extremely tight. It took a 4.5' breaker bar in conjunction with a rounded bolt extractor. Thank you again. It's great to have a truck that does not rattle. God bless!

I’ve been using youtube to help me fix stuff for years and this I think is the best how to video I’ve ever seen on a big repair job. Thank you very much for the video!
Just replaced my phasers and used this as my guide. Really great video! Taking pictures, using colored electrical tape to mark some of those electrical, vacuum and coolant connections and putting all the parts in order of removal was very helpful in getting everything back together. I will clarify that the harmonic puller is a 3 jaw type and to install you need the other harmonic remover/installer that has the bolt with 2 thread types to put on the harmonic balancer. A strap wrench was very useful to hold the motor while torquing the crank bolt but i would recommend torquing it before removing the cam holder tool. (I already put the valve covers on) The trim removal tool was worth every penny for those Christmas tree connectors. Hose clamp pliers were helpful too (i used to just use channel locks). Red scotch-brite pads and a $10 Harbor Freight dremel with a wire wheel were great for getting that valve cover cleaned off.
Hey Kenneth, I just did this repair in my garage. THANKS TO YOU I was able to accomplish this bit repair job. Thank you so much for taking the time on this putting the torque specs and the images and all you did here. I cannot thank you enough. God speed my friend 🎉❤. THANK YOU!

I added antifreeze and topped off about 3 times without a vacuum. No problems, no codes. I want to give a special thanks to Kenneth for his awesome video because it made most things very, very easy. I’m 71 years old and did the job in about 20 hours by myself taking my time. I worked on engines in my younger years, but conventional V-8’s, nothing like this. I made a 2’ x 4’ Shelf that laid on top of the radiator to a 4’ ladder with a pad. I bought the parts from Ford on line for 30% off. Great write up. Definitely helped me. That one 10mm on the battery harness is much easier to remove if you put 2 nuts on that stud and use a ratchet from up top to take the stud out.
Well I’m using your video to do mine after local mechanic said 7k and ford said 5k. Right now I have the new cam phaser on and torque to specs. Thank you so much hopefully I’ll be done tomorrow
@@juicer911 so I’m done I used the list you provided for tools and parts. Along with the tutorial I change the cam phasers on my expedition 2019. Now it sounds beautiful and it runs amazingly powerful. Thank you so much. The bottom anchor for the battery cable I didn’t even put back I just taped it back with electrical wire and it was good. You were right it’s a pain to take that one bolt out. In total it took me 20 hours. That is including the time for torque specs and pausing and rewinding vid. I was told by ford that it was gonna take 30 labor hours for them to complete. So I think I did pretty good lol. I spent 2000k in tools and materials (Walmart, harbor freight and Amazon ). Thank you so much for doing this video.
Hey bro . Great video. Question where did you get the information either the timing and torque specs if you don’t mind sharing it with me please? Thank you sir.
Thanks Ken! I replaced the driver's valve cover with this video today. Difinately helped me save some time and confidence to complete the job. Any recommendations for a christmas tree/trim tool?
You did a great job on the video. 🤙 Very much appreciated how thorough you were on the explanation and the visual. Also appreciated the torque speciations at the end. Well done, Sir.
Kenneth! Fine job of explaining the step by step of R &R the cam phaser. Just a thing that helps and makes it easy to get the valve cover to come off. Just spray spray something like WD40 around the seals and take a sharp pick and just it and the valve cover will lift off with ease.. Remove the coolant recovery tank with 2 bolts and 1 small hose.. Remove the air filter. It can trap a small thing like a lock washer which would be sucked in to a turbo. Then you will need a turbo. Saw this happen in a tractor dealers shop. Tom Silver k
I had this video up in my garage while I was doing the job, I have a good amount of mechanical experience and this guide was fantastic. The torque specs are a solid addition, not a ton of unnecessary fluff, and I would have only varied from his sequence for personal preference. This was a great guide and much appreciated, thank you for taking the time and effort!
Just a tip for anyone that plans on doing this, clean the surfaces before you re install any of the timing components it makes it easier to clean, and if you break the small connector for the oil pressure solenoid when removing the front cover just clean the Area and Sensor with brake clean and super glue it back in place. and to help time everything it doesn't matter too much if you spin the engine Counter clock wise a little just make sure all your timing marks line up before you set the final tensioner, you can also slightly move the cam phasers to get some more slack on the chain. these take me about 6 hours to do so just some tips on how I make it easier. when re installing the Front cover use the Long bolts in the middle of the front cover to help you line up if you are afraid of smearing the sealant.
Also helps if you use silicone spray on the valve cover seals when removing, makes the covers break loose easier. and the front cover seals when re installing, along with any hoses you disconnected. and if your vehicle is high mileage try and set the hose clamps back it its original position( it should be imprinted on the hoses) other wise it might cause a coolant leak.
I have a 2017 3.5 Ecoboost, I have had this done at the dealership "Twice", thank goodness it was under warranty. Having said that I have the rattle yet again, and I'm out of warranty. Im at 110k miles, just really frustrated with this issue amongst others like the 10 speed transmission that I had replaced @ 100k miles, and the infamous leaking oil pan issue. I know all brands have their issues but damn this is a lot for one truck, and it's not just mine. These newer f-150s definitely have their problems.
Boy I've got 150k on my 2014... Always stayed up on oil changes, Motorcraft only. Love my 6speed trans 0 issues. Just now getting a lite rattle on start up. Not sure if it's phasers, tensioner, heat shield or wastewater rattle. Oh well gonna tackle it soon.
A lot of Ford dealers are not installing the updated phasers. They have a surplus of the old phasers that fail but under a warranty repair they install what’s in stock. Anyone having this done should always request the new update phasers are installed and not the old version. The new versions are the ones where you cannot see the springs on the front of the phaser. Hope this helps.
Great video! Super helpful. I am trying to source the torque spec document that you went over, I would much rather print it out for the garage. Please help! Thank you
I have a gen 1 3.5 ecoboost.. doing the same job right now. Got it torn apart just have to put the chains/phasers back on and hope to god I don’t break anything else putting it together😂 (broke a few things I shouldn’t have already) 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for posting this one. Was good to get the part numbers for the specialty tools. One question how much of this is the same as the 2018 3.5 ecoboost in the explorer???
Thanks for the video it’s super informative! I opened that Google drive trying to see if there is a step by step manual I couldn’t find it. Is there a web link or something so I can print it out. Thank you much appreciated
Hey Kenneth! Appreciate the video 100%. I just found out my extended warranty wouldn't cover this repair because i couldnt provide them with verifiable maintenance records, even after i told them i do all the work myself. Long story short, i now have to tackle this problem AFTER having to replace the water pump and timing chain components on my 2013 explorer (all the fun! Lol). I was curious, where do you get the electronic manuals from?
What the proper torque and pattern for cylinder head bolts and the cam shaft bolts on a ford f150 3.5 L year 2915 would be greatly appreciated thank you
You took apart way more then you needed too but everybody has a first time I would have done it a lot differently but I do about 3 of these a week so I know tricks and shortcuts
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to do this. One question, I assume the torque specs, etc. are from a Ford service manual. Did you get on online version?
Hey Kenneth, Unbelievable Job. Great Video. When all is put back together, is there any special way to start the truck for the first time? Hold down the throttle for 5 seconds to get oil pressure? Rev the engine to 3500 RPM to set the PCM? Purge the radiator? Thanks Don
Thank you greatly for this video I’ve got a 2016 expedition with the same problem and some others. Can you tell me where I can get the repair manual you showed please help
Where did you get the maintenance procedure? I’m about to try this job in a month or 2 once I collect up all the parts but I can’t find the maintenance procedure and I would feel a lot better if I had it
The end all for this is a Pre Oiler installed before the oil filter, when the key turns power to the dash. It pre oils the top end of the motor and than starts. Every vehicle should have this...
100% or an even easier fix would be to program the computer to allow the engine to crank over for a couple seconds letting it to build a little pressure before allowing it to actually start.
I didn't notice one on your tuck , you should check into a oil seperator catch can I usually catch about 2 inches every couple months and the fuel mileage has gotten a little better. You must be a pretty good mechanic these newer engines are so much more complicated to work on .
@@OndraZales it's for engines that are turbo with forced air putting one on at anytime I dont think is a bad thing it keeps the oil from your valves and pistons from getting carbon build up I would put gum out in your fuel too help clean what might already be on their.
Thank you for the video! I have a question, when I look up the part numbers for the phasers in the description, the fitment says for 2021-2024, but I have a 2018 and from what I understand is a gen 2, should I still use? Thanks again!
Before removing the tensioners and chains how do you set the engine to tdc ? Do you line up links with the marks if the old chain still has some color of those tdc links?
Thank you so much for your video! I checked more videos w ith the list using parts and any list dont have new timig chains. You don't have too. You don't need new timing chains?
Ford does not replace the chains for the CamPhaser recall. I personally think it is cheap insurance. Ford is cheap and only replacing exactly what is needed. Timing chains, water pump, tensioners should all be replaced because they have a “life span.”
Hey great video this has def helped me come up with a. list of parts and the confidence to do this myself. Do you happen to remember the part numbers for the timing chain and the guides by chance? my truck has 68k on it and kinda just wanna replace them while I'm in there. hoping these new phasers keep it closed for awhile haha

What the proper torque and pattern for cylinder head bolts and the cam shaft bolts on a ford f150 3.5 L year 2915 would be greatly appreciated thank you
How can I get that ford maintenance manual you referenced? Thanks.
Happened to mine at 19k, hope the new style phasers correct the problem
I hope so as well
The needs to be a class action law suit against Ford. So many of us have had this problem.
@@Mike1981905 had mine changed awhile ago to the new ones now. Fingers crossed the same crap doesn’t happen again in 20k miles
You took apart way more then you needed too but everybody has a first time I would have done it a lot differently but I do about 3 of these a week so I know tricks and shortcuts
Hey got it done so I am happy. Hahah . Hopefully there is no next time.
@josephphallport how do get the crank pulley back on? I am having a hell of a time.
Would you be inclined to share your shortcuts?
What are these secrets?
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to do this. One question, I assume the torque specs, etc. are from a Ford service manual. Did you get on online version?
thanks for sharing
Did you replace the crank seal? If so how did you get it out?
Hey Kenneth, Unbelievable Job. Great Video. When all is put back together, is there any special way to start the truck for the first time? Hold down the throttle for 5 seconds to get oil pressure? Rev the engine to 3500 RPM to set the PCM? Purge the radiator? Thanks Don
Great question. I did not see anything in the manual about special start up instructions. However, I personally just started it like normal.
Thank you greatly for this video I’ve got a 2016 expedition with the same problem and some others. Can you tell me where I can get the repair manual you showed please help
I have no idea.. I had someone send me the pdf file to use
Where did you get the maintenance procedure? I’m about to try this job in a month or 2 once I collect up all the parts but I can’t find the maintenance procedure and I would feel a lot better if I had it

@@juicer911 what a hero
@@juicer911 This is for 2017. Do you have a 2018 service manual link for the torque specs? Thanks!
Would you possibly have a list for the exact same repair but on a 2018 F150 5.0L 3rd gen Coyote
Thank you... Much needed
The end all for this is a Pre Oiler installed before the oil filter, when the key turns power to the dash. It pre oils the top end of the motor and than starts. Every vehicle should have this...
Thanks for that comment
100% or an even easier fix would be to program the computer to allow the engine to crank over for a couple seconds letting it to build a little pressure before allowing it to actually start.
@_r.t- true!
just Hold the Gas When cranking, it will crank the motor without firing the injectors so it won't start.@@_r.t-
What pre oiler did you use?
About how much to do the timing job plus the phasers?
Do you have a preference on replacement cam phasers? I don’t want to have to do this every 70k+ miles
Beautiful work my Guy
Do you know if 2017 Raptor is same procedure
Hey man I was wondering what are the bolts that I have to replace and how many of them do I need?
I’d like to thank you very much very detailed very good information. Great job thank you.
I didn't notice one on your tuck , you should check into a oil seperator catch can I usually catch about 2 inches every couple months and the fuel mileage has gotten a little better. You must be a pretty good mechanic these newer engines are so much more complicated to work on .
I actually do have one on the truck. I don't think I showed it in the fridge though. But thank you for the suggestion.
So install oil separtor is good step? In my car isnt install from previous owners.
@@OndraZales it's for engines that are turbo with forced air putting one on at anytime I dont think is a bad thing it keeps the oil from your valves and pistons from getting carbon build up I would put gum out in your fuel too help clean what might already be on their.
Well done
Where did you get the computer program?
Thank you for the video! I have a question, when I look up the part numbers for the phasers in the description, the fitment says for 2021-2024, but I have a 2018 and from what I understand is a gen 2, should I still use? Thanks again!
Before removing the tensioners and chains how do you set the engine to tdc ? Do you line up links with the marks if the old chain still has some color of those tdc links?
You rotate the motor until the cam tools lock in.
Awesome video, thabks man. Where did you get the service manual from?
How long did you drive it like that and how much did it cost for all the camphaser replace
I agree with you, but I didn't see the past numbers for the timing chains or guides. Did I miss them or do you possibly have them?
First like to save love the instructions. You did an amazing job. Do you have a link where I can get that manual?
Hey great video this has def helped me come up with a. list of parts and the confidence to do this myself. Do you happen to remember the part numbers for the timing chain and the guides by chance? my truck has 68k on it and kinda just wanna replace them while I'm in there. hoping these new phasers keep it closed for awhile haha
Will wish work for a 2016 f150 3.5 eco boost?
Not sure if they are different motor generations.
