      With rumors that Tera types mite get some type of different forms in the DLC…Terrastalization is 2nd regardless because this gimmick can make certain Pokémon, like Ninjask, WAY better. :P

  • @MirkoBalda
    @MirkoBalda Год назад +65

    My main gripe with Mega Evolution is the fact that the starters couldn't access the gimmick. Every time I play a new game, I always try to use Pokémon of that generation, but doing so in gen 6 meant no new gimmick for me.
    This is why I think tera excels. Every Pokémon can access it, and can also have unique type that can change the fight (i love that the gym leaders have an ace who's not of that gym type but teras into it).
    So in my very humble opinion, Tera is the best gimmick.
    Also I love it both aesthetically and I like the music when your opponent uses it

    • @Hazearil
      @Hazearil Год назад +11

      I think that's more of a problem with XY than with Mega Evolution. ORAS didn't have this problem, and XY seemingly did it because they wanted to promote older Pokémon, thus rather than promoting the new starters get went with the typical Kanto choice, and gave you a second starter early on from there *with* a Mega Evolution.

    • @MirkoBalda
      @MirkoBalda Год назад +6

      @@Hazearil you're right, I forgot about the gen 3 remakes. My point was that since it was introduced in gen 6, they should have given megas to the starters. In gen 7 the starters have their own z move. I could have phrased my comment better. But I agree with you

    • @TheOmegazerox
      @TheOmegazerox 4 месяца назад

      Mega evolution was limited to fully evolved pokemon and further more to oneley a handfull of pokemon. I still liked it better then z moves cause it worked for the entire battle. Some sed z was better cause all pokemon could use it and it was stronger. It was a one shot and I couldn't rely on it for multiple battles. I never played ss so I'm not familliar with it's gimic. I beleve mega was dropped for it's limitation and if it was built up.more it would need more mega animation. I once sed what we needed was a powerup like an aura bond or something to give pokemon a power boost during battle withe the lasting qualities of mega and z moves varied use. This would make a powerup option with the good eldments of bothe. Teressalizing basicley did that so it's my favorite yet. I didn't like z moves much because of the one shot use and I found the little dances\pose silly.

    I like Tera because the mechanic itself opens up a lot in terms of competitive battling. Megas as a mechanic kinda sucks becasue it only applies to a very few number of pokemon, and doesn't actually do anything to buff those pokemon. You aren't ever choosing to mega a pokemon or not becasue the mega is ALWAYS better. Z moves are probably the second best. Most of the time it is used for a large blowout attack, but the effects granted by status moves are interesting. But that never saw too much competitive use because the big blowout move was just too valuable. It wasn't vertisitle in thay sense, becasue it was only used for offense. Dynamax is awful. Concept is neat, but execution is horrible. You get a blowout move for 3 whole turns, all the while getting buffs in an unkillable state. It was made to facilitate unfair sweeps.
    Tera on the other hand can be used in so many different ways and applied to so many different pokemon. You can Tera to boost your attacks. You can Tera to gain a better defensive position. You can Tera to give a pokemon a new stab type. This applies to every single pokemon in the game as well. Some of course utilize Tera better than others, but the idea is that all pokemon can use it in some way. It's not a coin flip like it would seem at first glance. When you play enough, you realize how some types are more common than others. You can adapt to these tendencies and form your own strategies around it. It's not overcentralizing in the slightest. If a pokemon is broken in gen 9, it's more likely becasue the pokemon itself is broken.

    I think there are two big points that I think you overlooked with Tera Typing in your video for negatives.
    One is the fact no one in the main story uses Tera Types SMARTLY. They just Tera Type their last Pokémon into their specialty type or it’s own type (in Nemona’s case), which Dynamax beats because the moves can hit harder on weaknesses and they can cause weather and terrain changes after use. The Gyms in Galar are smarter with Dynamax than the Gyms of Paldea (Biggest example is Larry Tera Typing his Staraptor to pure Normal, removing its resistance to Fighting moves).
    Another thing is the transformation scenes and animations for using Tera boosted moves are a bit too long and kind of unnecessary (specifically the attacks). Honestly, I never used Tera Types and found it to be kind of lame that it changes a dual type Pokémon into one single type. If it only changed one type, maybe different. And I don’t play competitively.

    I really like Tera, I rank it just below Dynamax for number 1, personally. I know this is a really unpopular opinion, but I feel like Dynamax was by far the most interesting gimmick because any Pokemon could use it at any time and you could decide to use it or not based on the flow of the battle, unlike Z Moves or Megas where you have to use it on a predetermined Pokemon. That sort of quick decision making makes for really interesting and fun battles and situations. Being able to set up a terrain for instance to avoid being put to sleep in a situation where otherwise it would be impossible to avoid is all thanks to Dynamax, but you have to weigh whether it may be better to just Dynamax another Pokemon instead. Not even taking into account Gigantamax with even more varied effects, and I just feel it's both the most fun, thought out, and interesting from a competitive standpoint.

    Another accessibility factor for terastallisation is that no held item is required. Once you have the key item and a charge on it, you can use it while the Pokémon who it’s used on doesn’t need to drop the item it’s holding. This also means unlike mega evolution and z moves you don’t need to obtain an item to first use them, since getting a specific mega stone, z crystal type or specialised z crystal could sometimes be more trouble than they were worth even when they weren’t event exclusive.

    What I liked about the Tera fights (both gym and raid dens) is the fact you can't brute force your way through most of the time.
    I.E. Iono has a Tera Electric Mistrevious with levitate so ground moves are ineffective. And the 6 star raid dens are challenging because you gotta think of potential counters the pokemon might have against your own.

Megas are still the prevailing favourite to the masses but to me it's mostly coasting off of the raw hype they bring with people ignoring the issues that came with it. I've always believed that Mega evolution should return as a permanent feature, but with some changes
    1. All non-evolving and final stage evolutions get one, aside from legendaries
    2. The stat boosts provided by mega evolution get cut in half or even eliminated (I'm not entirely 100% on this one)
    3. Mega evolution always causes a change in typing and abilities, and in some cases known moves
    4. Remove the need to hold a Mega stone, so you don't need to sacrifice your item slot or collect 600 stones

    On the other hand, Z-Moves, Dynamax and now Terastalization are more well-balanced, used by pretty much every major character you encounter, and can be used by any Pokemon rather then being reserved for only a handful of select Pokemon. It just makes them more fun, honestly.
    And yes, I think Z-Moves are better then Megas, you can shoot me now.

      It being completely limited to a small pool of pokemon essentially forced you to use one of them if you wanted to be on equal footing power-wise in the main campaign and I kinda just hated that fact
      Things like Mega Gardevoir, Gallade, or Metagross aren't exactly the easiest thing to overcome

      I liked the new designs, but appart from that the only game I can use them in is let's go where it didn't feel like it added anything and I heard it is just not balanced at all in the competitive scene (mega legendaries shouldn't exist). not to mention if you want to use it you have to add certain pokemon to your team, which just sucks.
      dynamax has the same benefits (new designs for some pokemon in the form of gigantamax), but felt like it changed something and is more balanced simply because every pokemon could use them.
      for the anime though, megas were way cooler.

    In the extra features I'd say that terastallization has improved quite a bit the possibility of using a Pokemon from a typically considered bad typing (Bug, Ice, etc.) and still do good despite being from said bad type. I didn't classify this as a balance discussion because there's no special interaction of terastallization with these bad types whatsoever, it's the same with every type, it just happens that Pokemon originally from these "bad" types benefit a lot from terastalizing and it allows them to be viable (at least more than before) with this battle gimmick.

    Depends what you mean by best, if you mean has more strategic depth and wide usage by any and all Pokemon, then yes, Terastilization is the best.
    Mega Evolution is a just a glorified power up for a very limited number of Pokemon limiting usage and variety.
    Z-Moves are cutscenes that take off large amounts of damage one time only. A one time KO move.
    Dynamax and Gigantamax is a short compromise of Megas and Z Moves.
    Terastilization is the best gimmick they've come up with so far, it is extremely versatile and can be implemented is various ways.

  • @saintsucks
    @saintsucks Год назад +2

    i think tera types are probably the best gimmick in modern pokémon games. i love how theres no special treatment for popular pokémon on how tera types work, like a special power up when they terastallizatize
    z moves, megas, and dynamax felt like you just press a button to win battles, building teams around your nuke pokémon. but with terastallization you get to build teams around synergy and how your pokémon’s tera type work with each other. another positive is that with all the other generational gimmicks they’re mostly used offensively, but with terastallization you’re rewarded with using it both offensively AND defensively.
    terastallization feels much healthier for the game, incentivizing making predictions during battles and planning what tera type you should use on your pokémon to either eliminate weakness or amplify their stabs. it feels so much more dynamic with the game with so many possibilities on how to use it effectively, even giving underused pokémon a chance to shine with terastallization (like torkal)
    with all the other gimmicks it just felt like a button you press to just automatically win a battle with one pokémon, but terastallization can be both a positive and a negative so players have to be more aware on how to get the most value out of their pokémon
    while i still love mega evolutions and their designs, terastallization feels more balanced and genuinely fun to make strategies about. so many people have actually gotten into competitive pokémon in gen 9 because of how fun and versatile terastallization is. i couldn’t be any happier with it

    Terastallization overall is likely the best mechanic. It's impactful, but usually it's not overbearing. Z-moves shaped the singles and doubles metagames, Dynamax was overpowered in singles and extremely central in doubles (though this was often liked there) Megas had the same issues (while being disliked in doubles) and was limited in scope. Tera types are much less impactful compared to these three, while remaining accessible for all mons.
    I know it's a point of contention in singles, but the idea that was floating around for revealed tera types akin to open team sheets should alleviate most of the issues on that front (and I think people have mellowed out on terrastalizing on Smogon a bit since the suspect test).
    The main reasons megas are so popular is because they tend to be more balanced in a tiered singles system (barring some mega stone-less exceptions) and, more importantly, the designs are generally very cool.
