Miter Saw Station Made of IKEA Cabinets - Part 1

- Back in November 2017, I finally find a place to set up my new workshop. I decided to go for IKEA cabinets to build my dream miter saw station, as I wanted:
A. A lot of storage.
B. Minimize overall costs.
C. Minimize the time spent to build this miter saw station.
D. Get a clean modern look.
Here's the solution I came with. I spent way more time than I was expecting to complete this miter saw station project, but overall, I'm pretty happy with how it came out!
I can cut over 8 feet/2.5m to the left of the saw and 4 feet/1.25m to the right of the saw. Plus I can now store a lot of my stuff in the upper and base cabinets.
With that said, it's still a project in progress, as I'm planning to add door and drawer handles (actually I badly need some!), wings, and a ruler system in the near future.

Never thought about using OSB as a building material for finished surfaces - but in combination with the clean, white cabinets, it looks great! Thanks for the video, gave me some good ideas.
Wood in combination with white walls or furniture is always a winner, imho. OSB is cheap, which makes it a good option for people on a budget or for spaces like workshops. Doors made of OSB wont last forever, but they are easily replaceable.
I really like the design, may be the best looking shop furniture I have seen on RUclips. Well done!

Nice build but a little expensive using IKEA cabinets, with your skills and love of OSB you could of made the whole thing from OSB, I also think having the bed of your saw level with your counter top would be better than using the two supports you had to make, but as I said...great build😃
TY! Making cabinets using OSB is not an option for me, the material is too fragile to hold well over time. I use it mostly for its look (and it's very cheap), mostly for doors, wall panels and construction. Considering the amount of time required to build custom cabinets, the METOD cabinets from IKEA remain my cheapest option. As for the wings, you are probably right, but my design has a few pros : a. I can remove the wings anytime and then turn the whole thing into something else (in case I move my shop again or in case I need more working surface temporarily). b. The wings are reusable anywhere as long as I keep the same concept. c. I like to have my miter saw sitting pretty high, but it's just a personal preference.
Looks great! What thickness OSB did you use for the doors, 18mm? And why wasnt the holes for the hinges in the cabinets pre-drilled, non-ikea hinges?
Thank you! 18mm, yes. I used some old IKEA hinges (actually made by BLUM), that don't work anymore with the METOD cabinets. No big deal, just some extra work.

Thank you! My workshop is roughly 45 sqm, splitted into a 1.5 car garage, and a second room on the back (where I installed this miter saw station).
Ce sont des caissons bas ikea 1P+1 tiroir ? Si oui quid de la robustesse du tiroir pour un usage atelier, épaisseur du fond, coulisses sorties complètes ? J'y avais pensé mais j'hésites toujours...

Merci ! Oui, ce sont des caissons 1p +1 tiroir (de 20cm de haut). J'ai été surpris par la hauteur des tiroirs par rapport à l'ancienne collection d'il y a quelques années (que j'ai utilisé dans mon ancien atelier), mais la qualité s'est améliorée et la solidité a été renforcée (le fond est un panneau de mélamine de 12mm). Les coulisses sont effectivement à sorties complètes et à fermeture douce : les tiroirs sont donnés pour 25 kg, mais honnêtement, j'hésiterais à les charger autant, les coulisses n'étant évidemment pas premium. Je ne compte rien y ranger de lourd, donc pour moi, c'est parfait, et le prix est imbattable.

çà sera donc au programme de mon coté cet hiver : ossature métallique par contre + osb + caissons metod.
Je remarque aussi que ta kapex n'a pas de meuble dédié mais 2 rehausses amovibles et mobiles pour les pièces plus longues. Ceci permettant de pouvoir la déplacer et travailler en extérieur. J'ai fait l'erreur de la mettre la mienne dans un meuble dédié, je le regrette maintenant car c'est quasi intransportable en extérieur dans le cadre de terrasse / aménagements paysagers. Did I mentioned I love OSB? It's messy to work with, but you can achieve great results and it looks great, at least here in Europe! I plan to use it a lot in my upcoming projects!

Basic wood working is a lot like LEGO just your constantly looking for the right bit, tool or chunk of wood instead of plastic bricks most probably in a big box of unsorted but useful items

Ikea is killing traditional cabinetry skills.
Nice project, but , if you have a mitre saw and table saw, why net get some Kregs gigs and make your own cabinet / mitre station and enhance your skills.??!!
My skills are just fine, thanks! Actually, building cabinets is boring and doesn't require much skills. Truth is it's time consuming and you can't beat Ikea in terms of prices, so imho it's both a waste of time and money. That's why I use kitchen cabinets from Ikea in many projects.

I tried to find a similar part at HD last Summer, but couldn't find any. They could be used to connect a 1 1/4 P-trap to a 1 1/2 pvc pipe, if it makes sense.
What grit do you sand the osb down to?
I don't have to sand the OSB I buy here in Belgium, it's already finished! I use 100-120 grit to sand the exposed edges.

Thank you and yes, the drawers and parts are from IKEA. They are so cheap that it's not worth building your own drawers and buying parts online, imho.
Were the lower cabinets and the drawers purchased separately?
All the cabinets and drawers are from IKEA.
One final question: how did you attach the counter top to the base cabinets?
Base cabinets are screwed to the counter top from underneath (through the top metal bars of each base cabinet).
Love getting ideas of how to layout my garage for car/garden growing center.
