I am glad this movie is getting more credit. I recently watched through the whole MCU (again), and was surprised how much I enjoyed AoU. I realised that it was because it is a movie that does a lot of the character and story building for the MCU AS A WHOLE. It is not as self contained as the other entries. The first time I saw it in the cinema, there was no future movies to riff off, so it fell a little flat for me. Not so once I had the reference of the other movies to think on. This movie utilises a heap of future calls and is actually integral to the MCU storyline as a whole. Think about how many memes have come from scenes in this movie alone! Anyhow, TLDR, AoU is a brick in the foundation of the MCU, made better by the sum of its universe. Great vid btw :)
@@danfish300 I'd say AoU was the ENTIRE foundation for the rest of the Infinity Saga. At minimum, it made the other movies look good or double check it's stories in order to avoid making AoU's 'mistakes', and at maximum the seeds planted in this movie bore a GREAT harvest for the MCU in later years.
My absolute favorite line is always Vision after his creation. When he says something like *There's no way for me to show you I'm worthy or good* and then *PICKS UP THE HAMMER!!!* 😯 I love that so much!!!
I couldn't have said it better. Really, I couldn't, words aren't my thing anymore. You pointed out everything I loved about that movie. I said it on Twitter the other day... I always love the awkward, middle-type movies. There was so much in AoU that was important and easily overlooked as *messy* but that's really what's great about it. All the mistakes made, etc. Anyway, great video.
The entire nature of the avengers and the MCU’s rules of engagement changes after AOU. Sokovia leads to the civil war over the accords, and the world view of them as uniformly positive gets completely inverted. Now nobody seems sure what to believe.
I also like how the last Vision/Ultron scene is a metphor of Joss handing the Avengers over to the Russo, who were "born yersteday" (the directed their first mcu movie the year before), and reflecting on the future of the franchise
@@philippebernard4577 idk, but it seems pretty "obvious", like whenever I watch the scene I think everything works with this metaphor, could be accidental but unlikely imo
I love this movie, even more so after several viewings and the added context of the subsequent movies and shows. And you brought up several things I hadn't thought of that make me love it even more. Thanks.
My biggest gripe with this movie is Ultron’s facial design. I LOVE the more skeletal design like when we first meet him or his epilogue with Vision, and wish the whole movie had that design.
My favorite Avengers film by far. I liked this video & the symbolism layout. I like that it’s not all action stuff through the entire thing, but you also see them interacting together, how clint has a totally normal life outside of the avengers, how clint & natasha are truly good friends, and vision & wanda are introduced and I love their characters. Also the fact that you used King of Hill reference in the video gave it an automatic like.
Ultron is still one of my favorite MCU villains. I really appreciated how he wasn’t a standard rogue AI and had human-like emotions and made snarky comments. And his final scene with Vision is a thing of beauty. Not the best film but I think people are harder on it than they ought to be
All my friends think this is the weakest of the Avengers films, and even that it's just bad. I love it. Ultron was acted so well, we get 3 new Avenger characters in Pietro, Wanda, and Vision. Falcon and War-Machine get screen time in an Avengers film unlike last time, the Infinity Stones are brought to awareness via Thor. Those visions are used to continue to develop each of the characters for films to come, and yes, just like in the comics, sometimes you just want more of your character as they are, you don't need an introductory arc, or some climactic change of character, we just need to see them in action.
What movie were you watching? That's not what I saw at all. They're some good character moments sure, but I thought the only characters that had an arc were Hawkeye and scarlet witch. Everyone else was a copy of tony for most of the movie.
Once again, a fantastic look into all that's going on "behind the screen" in a movie. I really like your analysis videos, Ryan, as they provide a lot more insight into what's going on. Well Done (again). And give Doug a treat for me!
Its awesome to see the movie get recognition. Its one of the most rewatchable movies and has a lot of great scenes, like the 2 robots debating over humanity or the afterparty. I feel like the movie was a breath of fresh air to the superhero genre and brings in a lot of new themes.
Screencrush did a good job of helping me better appreciate AOG. The writing and acting may have surpassed the cinematic execution but overall it's a profound work of art that invites a very dynamic philosophical discussion
I love James Spader and was looking forward to this movie. But it was a “dark” movie and lacked the warmth other MCU prior movies. You’re correct, the movie was stop and go and emotionally that’s hard to take. Quicksilver shouldn’t have been killed, the stakes were to low. The same is true for Ultron. Ultron’s character needed to be developed at an emotional level.
The beautiful writing makes this movie great. Natasha's describing Banner, Hawkeye talking to his wife, Natasha and Banner discussing running away, ect
I thought about Frankenstein in one moment, in fact, and it wasn't any of the ones you mentioned. It's at 1:29:24, medieval castle walls, Ultron's back as he works on a table. He looks exactly like a mad doctor.
I love the "Man was not meant to meddle medley." line because I genuinely talk like that sometimes. I think a few sentences ahead in the conversation and come up with fun little alliterative lines that I know sound stupid but they make me happy. I genuinely think Stark feels the same way.
I see Wanda having a bigger role in this than you say. I believe it’s because of her spell on the Avengers that Tony makes Ultron. It seems like the Stark goes into some kind of dark place for this movie, he is like a tool for her. When Ultron later meets Wanda it seems there is a connection already, so I’ve always felt she was more influential in the plot.
Love, love, love. I could not agree more! Age of Ultron is so underrated, but this movie is the path, the bridge to much deeper characters and stories. It built up for the grand story that was the end of the Infinity Saga and the final chapter for our beloved OG Avengers.
Age of Ultron is still one of my favorite MCU movies despite its flaws. I honestly prefer it over The Avengers. As much as some fans dislike this version of Ultron, I personally loved James Spader's version. The only misgiving I really had about the movie was killing Pietro off just because of the Fox/Marvel rivalry. I really hope they bring back Quicksilver one day.
I never realized Age of Ultron wasn't considered good. I always thought it was a typical comic book story, with crazy stuff happening that the heroes really see as crazy and then eventually solving the problems. Even most comic books, which are about 25-30 pages long, are solved by event in the final 3 pages... Often out of the blue, buy new information introduced in the last few frames.
I love age of ultron and I’ve probably rewatched this movie most of any MCU movie. You’re the first “critic” to explain why it’s so good despite its flaws.
Ngl, I’ve always enjoyed this movie. While I was always aware of the flaws in it, the insight we got into all the characters helped ground them and made them all relatable with the audience. Ultron is one of my favorite villains in the comics and I was happy to finally see him in a movie. Finally the foreshadowing this movie provided for the later films was great. When it first came out, it wasn’t the best but looking back in retrospect, it’s probably on of the most important movies in the infinity saga.
13:13 Ultron "YOU..... will tear them apart....from the inside." [Zemo cuts into frame, pushes Wanda & Pietro aside] Meeeeee?!? Yesss Meeeee! I will do it in thee third Capitan Amerika moviee!
I feel like this video put into words all the reasons why i love Age of Ulton! I admit, if i have to choose between TV and film, TV will win every time. This is because with TV, we see more character development and have the time to see the emotional beats between characters. Age of Ultron gave me that, It showed the characters battling with their internal struggles as well as delved deeper into who they are without the Avenger title.
You’ve read my mind! I really love rewatching Age of Ultron for the many great scenes that you’ve pointed out in your video. It is messy, but I love it as well. Cheers!
I love this movie. The scene near the end b/w Ultron and Wanda… Elizabeth Olsen’s delivery of, “It felt like that,” as she grips Ultron’s extricated “heart” in her hand. Gets me every time.
It’s like you went straight into my brain and made this video to explain every reason why I LOVE this movie Another thing I’ll really thank you for is finally explaining to me why most fans dislike this movie (bc honestly I never understood)
Ryan, you are a masterful essayist. You bring points and follow with poignancy. This has me wanting to watch and appreciate it more and give it another watch.
I've always loved this film. I haven't thought about it in depth the way you have but it's always struck a chord with me. I especially love James Spader as Ultron. I think he's the perfect voice for a great villain that everyone loves to hate. it is messy but I don't care. There's a great story here.
It’s interesting how well and terribly this movie does Chekhov’s gun. On one hand you have the avengers early on in the film setting up that no one else but Thor is worthy to lift the hammer then later in the film they pay it off by proving that vison is also worthy. But on the other hand they put in two scenes of Quicksilver being way faster than bullets then later killing him off with bullets. In the end I look at this movie like I do X-men apocalypse is a good movie? No, is it as good as it could’ve been? No but it’s a fun movie to watch regardless. Ironically my favorite part about X-men apocalypse is Quicksilver and my least favorite part of Avengers Age of ultron is Quicksilver
@@pickle.786 he’s way faster than the bullets which means he should’ve been able to move Hawkeye and the kid without getting hit. This is one of your best break downs. I have always loved this movie because it has a lot of dead sub-text. This movie requires active participation and analysis to understand that sub-text.
That conversation between Vision and Ultron at the end alone makes this movies brilliant. My only two problems with this movie is the death of Pietro, who is my favorite character and I still want him back, that version played by ATJ in particular (and I also want Ultron back!), and the part with Natasha where she makes it seem like being infertile is more of a reason for seeing herself as a monster than her past as an assassin. I always hate it when stories make motherhood or fatherhood, or the biological ability to procreate, is equated to their humanity, as if they're any less human if they're unable or unwilling. It's a beef I have with natalist propaganda in general. Great video and I pretty much agree with all your points here. Age of Ultron is indeed a beautiful mess and I love it too.
Unlike most others I kind of liked a bit of emotional exchange between Hulk & Black Widow in AOU. I wish they showed just even a-second-long scene of Bruce in the mainframe shedding a tear after Natasha's death in Endgame, would have completed their emotional arcs instead of just being forgotten.
This movie was always one of my favorites. I always knew it was cheesy, but it just hit something in my heart so hard. Natasha and Bruce literally broke me; I actually sob when he leaves
There's a lot of Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy in that final scene between Ultron and Vision. Of man being a tightrope between beast and superman. Ultron takes the Nazi's view that he is the superman, he is the ultimate evolution and that which came before can only pollute and degenerate his purity. Vision truly understands that evolution is an ongoing process, that all beings are born obsolete, that their highest vocation is to build a better world for those who will follow.
To me, this is why I love AoU, it's because it took blockbuster stand alone movies and used this movie to make it like a TV show where they could flesh out the characters more and set up for future things. Something that 90-120 min movies just don't have the time to do.
Unpopular opinion: Avengers Age of Ultron IS a good movie, people just pretend to deslike 'cause of the herd effect I remember saying I like Avengers Assemble better but then I rewatched and I actually like AoU better 'cause is way more developed and realistic If you rewatch both NOW you'll see not only AoU is great in terms of particular scenes but has a major plot that makes sense to the subplot and the characters actually look real and not flat versions of themselfs The battle in the church > The battle of New York Clint is not just bad bc magic scepter, he even has a family with Velma from Scooby-Doo as his wife Nat is not just a empty shell superspy, she is a messed up person with messed up past looking for people to care and accept her Steve is not just a empty soldier wearing a ridiculous costume, he is the man lost in time trying to make peace with the past he didn't get a chance to have Tony is not just an a-hole playboy playing in serious moments, he is a traumatized guy trying to prevent the world from ending Hulk is not just Hulk, he is also Bruce and that speaks for itself Thor is not just a god, he is trying to improve the world and make amendments using his power I'm kinda drunk so sorry for the typos but this shit hits real hard when you pay attention to what is there
I like to think Ultron "forgot" the word children as a way to be more charismatic. I mean the twins were borderline smiling at that line. Winning them over by appearing "human".
My biggest nitpick with this movie is that the Ulysses Klaue scene is set "off the coast of Africa." Africa's coastline is ~19k miles and touches 38 countries. The fighting spills over into the nearby city of Johannesburg, even though Johannesburg is over 300 miles from the coast.
I don't think Steve desired a family life in Age of Ultron. I think he feared it. His fear of women in general is pretty clear in Captain America 1, and his awkwardness is still there in Winter Soldier. That makes his vision in AoE parallel to that of the others (as a fear), and makes better sense of his throwing himself into his work. It also means that at the end of Endgame, he was facing his final fear.
“Because Tony hates Tony”. Tony definitely hates himself, but Tony’s relationship with his father is beyond strained, and totally fractured.
Couldn’t agree more!!
Dont me to sound stupid or anything but whats TLDR?
@@jakegriff2908 Too Long Didn't Read.
It is a way of concentrating a point so people do not have to read a whole rant.
@@danfish300 thanks for the explanation
It was a necessary film 2 carry on the stories & add development
I also like how the last Vision/Ultron scene is a metphor of Joss handing the Avengers over to the Russo, who were "born yersteday" (the directed their first mcu movie the year before), and reflecting on the future of the franchise
Waow !... You're going far. Did he have the final cut ? I have my doubts...
But why not ?! Maybe you're right !

Thanks.
The party scene and Hawkey's family scene are wonderful!
Love the party scene
Wow, incredible work by you and the team, Ryan. Let's not forget this is the movie which brought Lizzie Olsen into the fold and gave us "WandaVision."
I’d rather a beautiful mess to a complicated mess like dark world
Idk but I think Dark World is a boring mess rather than a complicated mess
Unpopular opinion, this is the best Avengers movie that set up Civil War perfectly
It's had the hard job of being the sequel, but it set up my favorite MCU films
That subtle "The Dark Tower" reference! You haven't forgotten the face of your father, sai. Long days and pleasant nights.
My biggest gripe with this movie is Ultron’s facial design. I LOVE the more skeletal design like when we first meet him or his epilogue with Vision, and wish the whole movie had that design.
its all a part of his evolution
wow RYAN, ONCE AGAIN YOU KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. THESE MOVIES DESERVE A COLLEDGE COURSE IN PSYCHOLOGY I ALWAYS THOUGHT.
💯🔥
My favorite Avengers film by far. I liked this video & the symbolism layout. I like that it’s not all action stuff through the entire thing, but you also see them interacting together, how clint has a totally normal life outside of the avengers, how clint & natasha are truly good friends, and vision & wanda are introduced and I love their characters. Also the fact that you used King of Hill reference in the video gave it an automatic like.
“All things serve the beam.”
We are well met.
Agreed. I love Age of Ultron because it’s basically 2 hours of great character moments.
What movie were you watching? That's not what I saw at all. They're some good character moments sure, but I thought the only characters that had an arc were Hawkeye and scarlet witch. Everyone else was a copy of tony for most of the movie.
I describe it as Joss Whedon’s love-letter to us Bronze Age American comic fans!
"And we see their worse nightmare unfold in _Wanda's visions."_ I pictured Paul Bettany looking dead-pan at the camera.
I love these breakdowns way more than the re-writes.
Screencrush did a good job of helping me better appreciate AOG. The writing and acting may have surpassed the cinematic execution but overall it's a profound work of art that invites a very dynamic philosophical discussion
totally agree
I love this movie too. idk why Olsen's accent is enough to tune out but I'm here for it on repeat
This just made Age of Ultron sensational for me instead of boring. Thanks dude
I love the way you think and analize things, Ryan. Even when I don't agree with certain things, the way your mind works amazes me. Keep 'em coming.
The beautiful writing makes this movie great. Natasha's describing Banner, Hawkeye talking to his wife, Natasha and Banner discussing running away, ect
This was a FANTASTIC breakdown, and says all the things I always wanted to say, far better than I ever could. Keep it up Ryan!
I thought about Frankenstein in one moment, in fact, and it wasn't any of the ones you mentioned. It's at 1:29:24, medieval castle walls, Ultron's back as he works on a table. He looks exactly like a mad doctor.
I was so happy you came back around and played the rest of Clint’s wife telling him how much they need him
I love the "Man was not meant to meddle medley." line because I genuinely talk like that sometimes.
James Spader needs to be back asap
Thank you! I could never understand why there was so much hate for this movie. It's one of my favorites in the MCU!
I really like age of ultron. Besides, it gave us vision, wanda, the infinity stones...
Love, love, love. I could not agree more! Age of Ultron is so underrated, but this movie is the path, the bridge to much deeper characters and stories. It built up for the grand story that was the end of the Infinity Saga and the final chapter for our beloved OG Avengers.
Ryan, you are so underrated. Every video you make is so good.
Apropos of nothing, a RUclips ad popped in right before Rey could say “Skywalker”. Sometimes the RUclips ads come at the right time.
Thank you for showing me how to love this movie. Never noticed how orchestrated its depth was. Wish it was done better now.
The exchange at the end, in cadence, reminded me of Giles 'She's a hero' speech in the Buffy episode 'The Gift'.
“there is grace in their failings” applies well to the whole movie
I totally lost it when he said, "If the mcu has one theme, apart from DADS"
This movie has definitely aged well.
It's 1 of the most important films
Cheers!
It’s good to see a nerd liking a thing even though it’s not perfect. Thank you for using your powers for good.
I love this movie. The scene near the end b/w Ultron and Wanda… Elizabeth Olsen’s delivery of, “It felt like that,” as she grips Ultron’s extricated “heart” in her hand. Gets me every time.
It’s like you went straight into my brain and made this video to explain every reason why I LOVE this movie
Another thing I’ll really thank you for is finally explaining to me why most fans dislike this movie (bc honestly I never understood)
I always felt that Age of Ultron is my favorite Avengers movie, but never knew exactly why. Now I know.
Ryan, you are a masterful essayist. You bring points and follow with poignancy. This has me wanting to watch and appreciate it more and give it another watch.
This video gives me a new appreciation for Age of Ultron. I'm gonna go rewatch it right now
I've always loved this film. I haven't thought about it in depth the way you have but it's always struck a chord with me. I especially love James Spader as Ultron. I think he's the perfect voice for a great villain that everyone loves to hate. it is messy but I don't care. There's a great story here.
Downy & Spader were 80’s teen villains, too. So, excellent casting.
I thought the stone in Loki's scepter was somehow influencing everyone's behavior?
hey this is not fair, you cant just make this essays from all the marvel movies and suddenly make me love them more
It’s interesting how well and terribly this movie does Chekhov’s gun.
If they wanted to kill him off they should’ve set up that someone needed to stay on Sokovia to hold down a lever or something and that he stayed because he’s the fastest and would make it out in time.
@@rosshauler7688 i dont remember ultron too well but at least for the fox quicksilver yea he was waaaay faster, but that's why he was killed bc the corporate deal, shame bc he was awesome for the one movie
@@pickle.786 marvel had full rights to use quicksilver in 2015 they just couldn’t use the name quicksilver or reference that he was a mutant. Also the dude has seven lines of dialog and his only screen time is standing behind characters
@@rosshauler7688 damn what a wasted opportunity then
This is one of your best break downs.
This is my favorite marvel movie
Banner "im stuck in a time loop" could kang be responsible for creating vision?
I really like this movie. Great video!
Ultron clearly states his motivations several times along with the Avengers going over why he's doing what he's doing.
And it helps emphasize who the greatest monster is in the MCU: Tony Stark.
Agreed. A lot of MCU story lines lead back to Tony, and he perfected time travel. And what is coming in the future? A time traveling villain in Kang.
To me, this is why I love AoU, it's because it took blockbuster stand alone movies and used this movie to make it like a TV show where they could flesh out the characters more and set up for future things. Something that 90-120 min movies just don't have the time to do.
Unpopular opinion: Avengers Age of Ultron IS a good movie, people just pretend to deslike 'cause of the herd effect
I remember saying I like Avengers Assemble better but then I rewatched and I actually like AoU better 'cause is way more developed and realistic
If you rewatch both NOW you'll see not only AoU is great in terms of particular scenes but has a major plot that makes sense to the subplot and the characters actually look real and not flat versions of themselfs
The battle in the church > The battle of New York
Clint is not just bad bc magic scepter, he even has a family with Velma from Scooby-Doo as his wife
Nat is not just a empty shell superspy, she is a messed up person with messed up past looking for people to care and accept her
Steve is not just a empty soldier wearing a ridiculous costume, he is the man lost in time trying to make peace with the past he didn't get a chance to have
Tony is not just an a-hole playboy playing in serious moments, he is a traumatized guy trying to prevent the world from ending
Hulk is not just Hulk, he is also Bruce and that speaks for itself
Thor is not just a god, he is trying to improve the world and make amendments using his power
I'm kinda drunk so sorry for the typos but this shit hits real hard when you pay attention to what is there
This 👍🏽
I like to think Ultron "forgot" the word children as a way to be more charismatic.
Age of Ultron is my favorite MCU movie. I thought it was the whole city rising from the Earth. This breakdown help me see the art in it.
