- Captain America: First Avenger and Captain Marvel are both Marvel Cinematic Universe prequels that introduce the future leaders of the MCU. But First Avenger does a brilliant job introducing us to Steve Rogers and setting up his 7-film journey, while Captain Marvel does a brilliant job introducing us to a cat.

What do you think of Captain Marvel?
Oof
Good origin movie, needed better fights. Even Superman didn’t curbstomp his villains in Man of Steel.
Captain Marvel Is About Female Power-Not Empowerment
It was okay
Overpowered and uninteresting lead makes for a chore of a movie to get through.
Dude your suggestion of putting the events in chronological order makes her story so much more appealing. Someone should edit that version together!
Agree, that the movie has a higher value then. I like the movie, didnt bother watching it when i rewatched the infinity saga however. Same went for the Guardians movies and Antman. One could argue those movies are not that well implemented in the overall storyarc, especially compared to movies like Civil War or Thor Ragnarok. If the Iron Man movies wouldnt be set right in the beginning, you could argue that those arent that well done as well. Now i feel the overall comparison of Captain America and Captain Marvel is flawed. This comparison looks at two single movies but theres no way around that subconsciously Captain America is put in a broader perspective of his 3 movies, where Winter Soldier and Civil War are simply very good movies with a lot of references and a lot of story that Captain Marvel couldnt have yet. I honestly dont quite get why Captain Marvel "didnt work" and it feels to me that this comparison is simply based on the opinion that one movie is better than the other. The argument is heavily construed and framed. Think a second about the title of the video and if that really explains anything. Captain Marvel didnt work because it wasnt done like Captain America (so much about the "similarities" ;theyre both origin stories, thats it). Thats a moot point by logic already.

@@bamdebambambam You are 100% right in my opinion. This video takes some easy potshots because obviously Captain America > Captain Marvel in everyone's opinion. When The First Avenger came out, it wasn't as well-received as is being portrayed here.
BUT this video does provide some really nice suggestions about restructuring, and I would definitely watch it recut in the way he described.
@@nnmartin94 I don't know how well Captain America: The first avenger was received by the public on its release, but I know that I started to watch Marvel movies after I saw it and realized that it already had The winter soldier and 3 Iron man produced. I caught up with Marvel in a week with all relaesed movies, like Thor 1 and 2 and Avengers etc, I remember seeing Antman also but it did not trigger me to search for more as The first avenger movie did.
@@bamdebambambam it’s more of an issue of where it is, rather than what it is. Guardians (IMO top 5 MCU movie) and AntMan werent sandwiched between the two most important movies (IW and Endgame). As for the comparisons, you gotta remember those earlier movies were just that... earlier. Back then we really didn’t know what a good marvel movie looked like (as in like critic and audience acclaimed), but since the first team-up we’ve been given multiple. There’s simply no excuse for captain marvel to have fallen as flat as it did, and it really leaves you scratching your head as to why it even needed to be included. Just my take on it
Captain America: The First Avenger's director said "We wanted the viewers to fall in love with Steve Rogers BEFORE he becomes a superhero" It might just seem like a statement but if you think about it, its an extremely powerful idea.
And that is exactly why Stever Rogers has such an amazing character building.
"The serum amplifies everything inside, so good becomes great; bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen."
Steve Rogers was *already* a hero before he became a Super Hero.
Exactly why he is the first reaction
So i get why people, especially men identify with Captain America's underdog arc. The core theme/tension of Captain Marvel's character is a woman who is told she isn't powerful/good enough without them and is held back by her society/her "mentor" figure. She's too emotional and needs to learn control... i get it, straight men don't relate. It feels forced to you all because "that doesn't happen both genders are judged exactly equally"....but there is a huge portion of the population who it IS relateable to. Capt. Marvel wasn't an origin story. It's a reclamation and emancipation story. Open up your eyes straight white dudes of America.
@@BiologyIsHot You somehow took a video about why captain america is better than Captain marvel and Turned it into your own sexist narrative
@@BlackPersonGuy - hahaha---that's what they do when they look for problems that don't exist... the whole video was about how they had the same story, which would make it relatable to the same straight white gut, but it wasn't told properly and how changing the order would have corrected many of the flaws.
I mean, wasn't Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun considered to be reckless through his emotions? Straight white guys loved that story!
First thing you learn in any creative writing class, "show don't tell".
That's so true
And you have to be a really good writer to both do the showing and the telling. But it depends on the scene.
An example of this would be Moana's grandmother telling her and some other kids the story of how Maui(hope i spelt that right) stole Te feti's heart and the terrible consequences that followed
I don't think a lot of people truly understand what that means though...
@@aanyamallick7747 thats not what is meant by "show, dont tell"
A great comparison would be how the first Thor movie went, him actually not being able to control his impulses and having to learn from his mistakes
Yes.
We actually saw how arrogant
and a hothead thor was.
The scene that shows this is where one of the frost-giant said "run on back home princess"(or something like that) and Thor proceeded to punch him in the face
@@aanyamallick7747 Yea and then we can clearly see his development as Thor 1's Thor would have straight up killed Gamora when he finds out that Gamora is the daughter of Thanos but current Thor can sympathise and knows how it feels like to lose family.
@@Athenabadassinthearena Yes.
Although, I do think that Thor did get wiser through the his whole plotline in the cinema universe, I think that there were too little time on the Earth in 1 Thor. Like film shows only few weeks, when it seems like he spend there few months. That would have explained how he and his crew grew on each other so the sacrifice scene would be more emotional 🤔. like they're the right scenes and events but too little time for them
@@nastyasch6680 Yes tbh it makes sense that they cut it off as why would the audience want to see all that lol
In the final moments of this 11 minute video, I felt more emotionally invested in Carols story than watching the full captain marvel movie. Twice.
you need a medal for watching it twice, that film was shit
Not even a joke, just a sad truth.
Yup I was actually hyped.
@@mattybrown3369 hahaha. Twice IS a bit too much
Watched the movie twice. Once with my dad, and once with my friend. Disliked it both times and my friend agreed. But for some unknown reason my dad loved it and has become a Brie Larson stan, and gets defensive at any criticism towards Captain Marvel the movie, the Larson’s portrayal, and Larson herself. It’s sad that I have to repeatedly put him down on this issue for the sole reason of this movie being bad.
Too much cringe, the jokes weren’t that funny, horrible decision to not have the movie be in chronological order, and a bland protagonist. They even had the audacity to throw in the line “I don’t even know who I am!!!” and not expect the audience to cringe.
The only reason this movie performed as well as it did is because at that point the MCU had become too big to fail, they had fans built up and invested over 20 movies. With a guaranteed audience and some decent marketing, any and every MCU movie should be able to turn a profit. They even put it right before their biggest movie ever to convince people that it was a much watch before Endgame like Antman&Wasp.
Nothing in that movie was necessary prior to Endgame, you learned that Captain Marvel has powers, which was irrelevant for over 95% of that movie. You learned that shapeshifters good & kree bad, which also had no implications in Endgame. And you had the tesseract AGAIN, which means nothing to the audience since we already know that it’s destroyed.
This movie should’ve been put in phase 1, cause it really is just a lower quality phase 1 movie, and left it alone to allow hype for the character to build for them to be useful in phase 3&4.
It's crazy how a simple rearrangement of the storyboard can easily fix most of the issues with the movie.

They got so caught up in creating a “strong” woman, that’s just like a man, that they didn’t add a vulnerable side, which is what makes Cpt America and Iron Man, and Black Widow, etc so appealing and likable. If the goal was to not like Cpt Marvel, they succeeded.
She had no memory and when she recovered, it almost broke her. How much more vulnerability do you want?
@@getitboy83 how was that portrayed?

Captain marvel is the worst MCU character because of the underlying feminist agenda. The actress also is unlikeable and does not have any humility towards her role. It is Marvel's biggest mis cast.
After watching Endgame, went back to watch Captain America: the first avenger and had a new appreciation for that film over Captain Marvel. Much more depth, didn’t feel rushed and shows why Steven Rogers was the best of us all
Just watched CA:TFA 10 yrs after watching it the first time and I appreciate the movie a whole lot more than when I first watched it. I went into it expecting an Iron Man experience and left disappointed. Fast forward now and I appreciate the slower pace and character struggle and development into who we see in the future movies.
That movie is so much better than people realized.
First avenger is definition of great character building :)
How about the fact that we are never worried about her because her power is just massive and undefined. She never seems in any real danger.
That’s what makes her a boring character, she isn’t shown struggling or questioning whether she is worthy of her power .
Not true. We have no real idea until the end just how powerful she is. Personally I was worried about her mental health from all the physical, mental and emotional abuse she got from the ones she was trying to identify with, the Kree. I guess mental and emotional abuse is a poorly understood concept in society... It took me decades to finally learn the different aspects of it and that I wasn't required to prove anything to such people either, myself.

To me the scene that defined who Captain America is was when Steve threw himself on the grenade not knowing it was fake. He did this without hesitation when *none* of the other recruits did so.
This despite the fact he was the smallest, weakest, and least respected of the lot.
He's trying to protect his fellow soldiers from being blown up

that was the test. yes it was dumb by Steve, but its was his start not his peak, figuratively and literally. that would come later.
any way THIS is is also missing in MISS marvel (the only captain marvel is a DC hero shouting shazam, fuck you) the moment that made it clear she was a hero.

Honestly, Captain Marvel seemed and felt like a movie that was made as a rough draft. Like, they thought, "This is good enough, let's make this a movie."
I went to see the movie not expecting anything and I was still disappointed.
I think Captain Marvel established herself as a jerk quite fast. And she didn't change.
Yep.
Steve Rogers: I will dive on that grenade to protect people who might think I'm a weak loser.
Carol Danvers: That jerk just told me to smile - I think I will steal his motorcycle because I am above the law.

Most important thing we learn from Captain Marvel: Why Fury wears the eye patch.
@PS Effect how does it break the continuity?
@PS Effect I just watched the first 20 minutes where they explain it. And it doesn't break the continuity. It does make that scene in The Winter Soldier worse, and they do make a horrible joke about it in the movie, but the continuity is still there.
They do mention a lot of continuity mistakes Cap Marvel introduces with Fury, with which I do agree.
And it was depressingly stupid. So ... Thanks, I hate it.
It was the most important thing and they even managed to fuck that up.
A cat. You would think a bad ass like Fury would have lost his eye to something greater but noooo-oo! He loses his eye to a cat which is as embarrassing as well as stupid. 😝😝😝😝😝😝😝
Bree has a single facial expression for everything. An unconvincing 'I am such a badass' look. It is very hard to find that likable.
So does Chris Evans tho, it’s the writing that matters.
@@hamzaiqbal7985 What? Did you ever watch a movie from the MCU to say dumb stuff like that?
Yeah. It's kinda emotionless. It's been told in the movie that she had a temper, she is fierce and spicy but she always seens like a stone cold badass that doesn't flinch
It’s extremely unlikeable
I agree. When it comes to expressions and personality, she is barely one step above Bella Swan from Twilight. Brie Larson was just a terrible choice for Captain Marvel.
LOVE your version! It would have fixed everything for me. I don't think Brie Lawson was miscast - I think she was misdirected.
This is why I teared up in the Endgame moment just prior to the portals opening. Cap was defeated, the Avengers were defeated, there was absolutely no hope and no chance he could win...but he stands up. "I could do this all day." He has no chance but he's NEVER going to give up when it comes to defending people.
Every time I see that scene, I think about how much I would love a poster of that one frame with him alone against the thanos army and that phrase at the bottom of it.
Fun Fact: In "Captain America: The First Avenger", in the "Alley" fight scene. After Steve gets back up after being knocked into the trash, he delivers the line "I could do this all day" before Barnes comes to rescue him.
I think Endgame was in almost every way inferior to Infinity war, but for the story arc of Captain America.
@Sameer MAHAJAN
Yeah I understand that. As a principle I don't typically like time travel, often used to patch up plot holes, but this was one of the few places that made sense to more or less make a scrap book of the characters. I just think its execution was poor in many places. Hulk was lackluster. Thor's moving into humor was great up until they decided to go with slap stick in End Game. That all girl moment was pure cringe. There was an all girl moment in IF that flowed without implying we are idiots. Quite simply Infinity was was just a better built film in my opinion.

Captain Marvel was such a bad movie, but that all they can make when the requirement is "strong female character". Apparently "Strong" for them means that they have to be borderline flawless, have little if any adversity and be overpowered AF. If they wanted to go with the "control your emotions", then they needed to show her doing stuff that either made her lose, even with all that power, because of an impulsive move, or be the reason people get hurt/lose rank/she loses X, then it would make sense, but she was a plank of wood the whole time. Captain Marvel, Rey, and most "strong female characters" these days can't hold a candle to Ripley, Sara Connors and Brianne of Tarths our there.
Wanda letting sokovia fall because she went mad by her brother's death screams more "Control your emotions" than captain marvel's whole movie
Woke-ness ruins everything.
Strong female characters are just men(douches) in a woman’s body, not fun to watch, and not appealing
Wow, I didn't expect this summary to be... So incredibly insightful and on point. I really don't want to like Captain America because on paper he seems so bland and lacks "growth". Yet I simply can't help it, he's such a good hero. On the other hand, as a woman, I wanted to love Captain Marvel, and I just... didn't. This explains so much.
Edit: Your insight to her story being reframed as a woman captured into an abusive power struggle with a man that audiences are rooting for her to break free from was so compelling. Excellent, excellent story-telling and it moved me.
I'll always feel robbed, like they rushed the Captain Marvel movie just to tie her into the Avengers story line
exactly
EXACTLY! That is how I feel about the movie also. Well put!
FACTS!
They could have done so much better with her. M not a comic fan but the comic fans do say that she has her own struggles in the comics too and it would have been better as it makes character interesting.
Duh
That's exactly what it was. It was that and the fact that they needed a stronger woman superhero in the big finale. She barely had any screentime, and I'm assuming they're saving that for The Marvels movie to hopefully show us what she was up to
"Control your emotion!"
Duh, she's literally almost being emotionless throughout the movie until the end.
Reminds me of the "Controlada" - the "Easy" episode - which literally has nothing to do with the the husband of the lead female character being "controlling", but both the title and the guy trying to manipulate her tell her so, and the rest of the episode - as greatly crafted and acted it is - has literally nothing to do with anyone being controlling.
Rant over.
Villain: "Control your emotions!"
Audience: "Yeah, you tell that plank of wood."
Sounds like her character was LISTENING. You know, listened? Changed when she no longer wanted to listen? ARC?
I think it's a feminist plot point. Men tell her to control her emotions when it's clearly not an issue because sexism

Your version of what this movie should've been is actually waaaaaay better than what we've got...
Quite honestly, the statement you made is exactly how l feel. No disrespect intended to those who put together Cpt Marvel, they did a good job, this would have been much better.
my thoughts exactly, that version would had been much better instead of that mess of random and weirdly structured things we actually got, all disrespect intended to those who put together Cpt Marvel
I agree, while the people who did put Cpt Marvel together did a pretty good job it was slightly mediocre, the version he displays would give alot more character potential instead of the "Pew pew" action style they provided.
Agreed! I end up just not caring about her as a character that much. Nothing to root for, as the bad guy doesn’t seem that bad, and her character flaws or weakness are not obvious. And it doesn’t help that we’re supposed to sympathize with the Skrulls. To show more of the aggression of the Kree and their oppression would have helped me sympathize with the Skrulls.
Now I just need someone who’s good at movie editing to take it apart and re cut it this way.

It is the lost art of storytelling. Tarantino can get away with this because he can set up events that are happening in the present that show you who characters are and then he explains later how they got there. From Captain Marvel comic book writer, Kelly Sue DeConnick: "“Carol falls down all the time, but she always gets back up. We say that about Captain America as well, but Captain America gets back up because it’s the right thing to do. Carol gets back up because ‘Fuck you.’”

I was thinking about how a Robocop's approach of regaining Captain Marvel's humanity and emotion should've been done. Your take on abusive relationship is much better than the original.
But... it's the same themes as the original.
I understand critiques that it would execute the concept better, but it's really clearly still about being gaslit and manipulated.

I did feel like you missed the beat on the emotions field, the comment ‘don’t be emotional’ is something women hear all the time even if we’re not being emotional at all, it’s a method of control and gaslighting, you’ve been beaten in any situation the moment someone just suggests you’re being emotional. But I agree she has NO emotions at all, a cardboard box has more feelings 😂
But, in the MCU, you have a number of female characters that both show their emotions and are fantastic. Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanov, Shuri, Wanda and others are very strong female characters who are not afraid to feel.
She does feel though. And she does show it. Many women don't show it with our entire face though. We with "rbf" shouldn't be chastised for being strong and stoic just because the woman next to us is crying. She shows another kind of woman and that's awesome.
Thanks again for putting into words what I have just felt around watching those films. It´s very helpful
“Do not let your emotions override your judgement.”
But she doesn’t *have* emotions that can override her judgement.
Yep she is stone faced the whole film but I do not even blame Brie for that they wrote a wooden character. Her emotion the whole movie is indignant fighter. @@rishabhbhatnagar9632 the low hanging fruit of critiquing captain marvel is usually one of two things: the main character not knowing how to act very well, and the social justice warrior agenda. OP is saying it is refreshing listening to a critique on a deeper level than just the low hanging fruit and saying the movie was a disaster on almost every level and not just the overbearingly bland surface.
I think that the reason that many criticisms of this movie revolves around social justice is for two major reasons. First and most obviously is it came out in 2019 and Disney was marketing the two tent pole franchises as empowering for women. I think this pissed a lot of butt hurt people. 2nd because I think there is truth to the complaint. I think there is a core of “social justice” at the heart of Captain Marvel. I use air quotes here because it’s a superficial twitter/social media level of social justice. To be blunt it’s pandering, and not actually confronting real issues of justice. This is way versus Black Panther. Which does through the complex character of Kill Monger. Both films are about social justice. One however explores the deep and flawed complexities, the other is a pandering preformative “social justice”. It’s shallow. This criticism points this out as well but I think the social justice concept is at the core of the failure in the story this movie is telling. Captain Marvel is very Mary Sue.
Jolly Swift True, there are flaws with this movie on a fundamental level, on every various aspect of its ‘complexity’ it’s basically just a simplified Marvel formula movie, with Social Justice talking points sprinkled all in there. By the way, I wrote this all out and then realized I typed out an entire damn book so I don’t actually expect anyone to read all of this and I thoroughly apologize to anyone who does in advance, here’s a potato 🥔 you’ll find another one at the bottom as interest xD
People don’t want to see a buzzword talking point being addressed unless it’s an actually grounded and real issue. For example, Black Panther, in my opinion, did a great deal of showing how to address racial injustices of the past. The 90’s was a very violent decade for many black communities, and many have held onto and passed on the hateful emotions about that time, in the movie this culminates into Killmonger, a man who bears the hatred of past racial violence mixed with hatred at seeing a thriving and powerful black community - Wakanda - refusing to help those of their own race around the world. So he dedicates his entire life to taking both down, and when his plan fails and he recognizes that he would be locked up as a war criminal, he recalls the slave trade and the feeling of bondage, again not letting go of the past and seeing too many similarities in the modern day. T’Challa (RIP Chadwick) is a foil to this, growing up both in royalty and within the protection of Wakanda, he knew nothing of racial injustices in other countries. When confronted with a man who was so consumed with hate, doing all the wrong things for all the right reasons, it changed T’Challa’s viewpoint of isolationism, he realized he must help out those who are stuck in unfortunate circumstances. But, rather than trying to level the playing field by tearing down and exterminating certain people like Killmonger wanted to do, he made choices to raise others up, i.e. building low income housing in poverty stricken neighborhoods, as well as presumably other charitable deeds. Black Panther isn’t saying that there are racial injustices still happening now, but that the effects still linger - so the solution isn’t to target people since nobody is causing it now. But rather to just minimize the effects.
That is a way to portray a social issue. Captain Marvel attempted to address sexism; however, they took the shallow, 3rd wave feminism point of view towards it and therefore had a shallow movie. They even had a good start, sexism in the workplace/military during the 80’s was a genuine issue and even when it was rectified, the 90’s still would’ve had chastising and booing towards women going into positions they never could’ve had before. But, they did ruin it by transferring that idea into the modern day and acting as if women are still blocked at every turn, when statistically that’s just not true, it’s not that women can’t reach certain positions it’s just that, on average, women want other things like family and children. But the movie doesn’t see that, they only see the past issues and kept it into modern day. So, essentially the entirety of the movie is like a sexist version of Killmonger, refusing to let go of the past and seeing similarities in the modern day where there aren’t. BUT the problem with dissecting the social justice problem of the movie is that it takes a really long time to explain in full detail WHY it’s a problem so people will typically just say “It sucks because it focuses on social justice too much”
Sorry for long comment, here’s a potato 🥔
Wow, this was such a great analysis all throughout, I was so engrossed in this video
Very interesting video, thank you 👍🏼💕
The Captain America movie is better, and your suggested edits would have enormously improved the Captain Marvel film.
Thanks!
I agree, except for one thing -- nothing would've "fixed" Captain Marvel short of recasting the lead. Brie Larson is utterly charisma-free in that movie. And every time they said she was "too emotional" I had to laugh, because her performance was so bland and emotion-free. I'm still utterly mystified that they chose her in the first place...
@@chaburchak I agree
@@chaburchak Good point, especailly based upon the few interviews I saw in the run-up to Endgame. I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt before that. After? Not so much.
True... I just don't like Brie Larson. When you don't like the person portraying a character you just don't like the movie at all. The movie could have been much better but her comments/interviews make her just unlikable..
Two words: Character Development
Cap had it, Marvel didn't.
The problem is also that Capt. change in power scale too while Marvel is the same powerful being from the start to the end. When the power level and their mental development are both stale, there’s barely anything to engage to.
One word: Goose.
Marvel had it, Cap didn’t.
Apart from that, yeah, you’re right.
Honestly i think they just put together Marvel as quick as possible to because of Endgame. So no chance for character development
@@chyffon5454 Steve Rogers was shown to have a big heart through his story - a heart of a hero.
Carol Danvers (through the flashbacks) was shown to be a fighter.
There is a difference between a hero and a fighter. Of course, neither of them were quitters, but Steve did it mostly for the good of others (telling the guy in the theater to be quiet, throwing himself on a grenade, etc). Carol fought just to prove something to herself.
I get your point now. The problem is that I don’t get that from the movie. Almost all Marvel heroes are fighters too, I don’t think the movie made it clear that her fighter quality is more than anyone else. I don’t read the comics and I don’t have the comic’s data to fill the void, I don’t love or hate her as a character, her image in my head is just blank and not as clear as heroes without a solo film like falcon or Hawkeye. I just think C.Marv could’ve been a much better film if the script is a bit more polished, maybe make her fighting spirit looks higher that the cliche level, idk. I may expect too much from Marvel Studios, but I’m just comparing from their track records.
your rearranging of the film was so amazing
i want to see it put together like that instead!
"We all know she's a human from reading the comics."
Completely missing the fact that the MCU these days has to be accessible to EVERYONE, even those who've never even heard of the character's comic book existence.
Back when they made Cap's first movie, they didn't care about that as they were just making some Marvel movies.
Most people say "This is what I would do to fix the movie" and list a sequence and it can be okay but overall I usually don't feel like they understood the point of the movie and their sequence of scenes just doesn't work super well. You may be the first person to explain a movie and make me go "yeah that would've worked well." And you did it with every scene in already in the movie. Well done!
Absolutely! Just changing the scene order can fix so many problems in this case.
one of the problems with the movie is that carol doesn’t get a standard marvel movie hero moment, like sure when she’s talking to the supreme intelligence she breaks free form the krees control but she never had a scene where she falls into despair or gives up. every other marvel character solo movie has one of these, like when tony takes peters suit away, when quill realizes his father has killed his other siblings or when t’challa is thrown off the cliff by killmonger. each of these characters comes back stronger and more willing than before now that they’ve seen what’s at stake and what they might have to sacrifice. that being said, i really hope they fix everything in Captain Marvel 2 :)
OMG. They're making another one?
Thing is they could have had that moment if they stuck closer to the comics and showed her partnership/training with the OG Captain Marvel and how they fell in love with earth and then incapacitate Mar-Vel forceing Carol to step up and finish the mission but at the end of the movie imply that she's not ready to take up the Captain Marvel name yet (only to accept the mantle in Captain Marvel 2)

Oh my god!! Your retelling of Captain Marvel in chronological order literally have me goosebumps.
Great analysis man! Bravo!
I think they were so caught up in creating a strong stoic-type woman that they forgot to include the most important trait of strong woman characters is their ability to be empathetic and tender when needed. This is why Wanda works so well in the new show cuz we get to see her vulnerable side which she overcomes and that makes her way more badass.
Captain Marvel is kinda a tomboy.
@@DarknessXER then why would the movie keep say 'Dont let your emotions overide ur judgement'. If she doesnt have much emotions
Strong women need to "be empathetic and tender"? I'm sure you mean well, but you're pigeonholing an entire gender. Many women indeed are empathetic and tender, but many are not. The same can be said of men. Ultimately, the only important trait of a "strong woman" is that she is strong. There's no need to create an artificially narrow definition of womanhood.
@@EmmettFlo7 oh shut up

Us, the viewers: WHAT EMOTIONS!?!
Something else that disappointed me was that we never saw how she learned to use her powers after she knew she had control. She is unsure of herself and her powers and suddenly she is all-powerful and fully competent. I don't buy it.
Similar thing with Raven in Netflix's teen titans. In the show she's afraid of her emotions and unable to use or control it because she doesmt understamd it but SUDDENLY. she is able to use her powers because ...yk...PLOT.
Raven is my favorite Titan and I am appalled at what they did to her. She is kind of similar to Carol Danvers in a way, where Carol doesn't show any emotions in the movie, JUST BECAUSE(yk, STRONG WOMAN)
Raven on the other hand keeps her emotions in check because she is in control of her powers out of fear of them and she had time to understand it. And even though she appears emotionless, you still see her expressing some emotions and you get an insight of who the character is. Her emotions are dangerous and we've seen it in both comics and Teen Titans Cartoon Network series
This is why Wanda shines.
@@aanyamallick7747 I feel this, Raven is also my FV Titan and I agree in everything you have said, I love her on the comis, the animated series/movies but Titans show for me was a big no because I never felt it did justice for the characters, not even mad at changing stuff as on Marvel it worked on Nick Fury but because it felt right, not just done for the sake of being different, I may be wrog now as I only watched less than a few episodes from the first season and stopped but is how I felt and I was so excited when I heard Titans was gonna get a live action series.
Let’s see, she learned how to fly because she used her photon blasts early in the movie to thrust herself to keep from being sucked out into space on the Skrull ship. That’s pretty much the only power we saw her use at the end. Everything else she did throughout the movie. Seems like someone wasn’t paying attention. Interesting how no one complains when Tony has a new suit every movie or how Thor magically summons lightening and flies without his hammer in Sakaar.
@@getitboy83 Did you pay attention yourself? Tony built those suits. There's enough information in the movies for this. His 1st flight wasn't even smooth. As for Thor, he was born with those powers.
Danvers used to thrust herself from being sucked, but at that time, her powers were still minimal. Evn Cap had some adjustments during his 1st post-Serum run.
Great breakdown, nice video

So i get why people, especially men identify with Captain America's underdog arc. The core theme/tension of Captain Marvel's character is a woman who is told she isn't powerful/good enough without them and is held back by her society/her "mentor" figure. She's too emotional and needs to learn control... i get it, straight men don't relate. It feels forced to you all because "that doesn't happen both genders are judged exactly equally"....but there is a huge portion of the population who it IS relateable to. Capt. AMAZING video!!!!!!:)))
Captain Marvel is the first marvel movie I sat through in and thought, "Wow, these action sequences are boring"
Outside of Fury and Carol, I cannot remember any name of any character in that movie.
Most fight scenes in big movies have big emotional ties. For example, in Revenge of the Sith during the fight on Mustafar, you know going into it that Obi Wan will come out physically okay but Anakin will never be the same. Yet the audience also knows that Obi Wan doesn’t want to hurt Anakin. Will he hold back? Will he do what he must?
In Superman movies, the writers try to move heaven and earth to make the audience worry for an almost entirely un-killable hero. Yet in Captain Marvel, we don't just see a failed attempt at this, but the total ABSENCE of any attempt at all.
But at least it has the best Stan Lee cameo
@@capttrips1523 I felt more emotionally invested in his cameo than in the rest of the whole movie.
*in captain America the first avenger*
Dr Erskine: whatever happens tomorrow you must promise me something. To remain who you are. Not the perfect soldier but a good man
*shows steve jumping on the dummy grenade, running off to save Bucky and a whole squad of soldiers, fighting hydra, then fighting loki to protect an old man, followed by protecting Bucky from both hydra and shied and finally being able to wield mjölnir*
*meanwhile in captain marvel*
Lady: you is kind, you is gentle, you is important
*crickets*
In all seriousness the reason why captain marvel fails is because the producers didnt want their precious "hero" to be flawed. The wanted HER to be amazing, stunning, unstoppable but forgot to make her human. In their own hubris they built her up so high that she fell over
What’s sad is in the comic books her PTSD from being basically a brain washed villain actually makes her very interesting. I wanted to see Carol drinking away the fact that she had gone around the galaxy acting as the Gestapo. But she just shrugged off being a villain like it was nothing. She considers herself a hero and that was all that mattered. Who cares how many people she hurt along the way.
@@MamaMOB Or how psychologically scarring it should be to fight the people you fought alongside for so long. But no, Carol is stronk and as a result, a total sociopath.
@@MamaMOB I mean in ender's game the main character was a stoic genius who kept his emotions in check. At the end of the movie ender committed genocide on an alien planet that turns out to be the real deal, not a simulation. Ender threw up and felt horrified. I had more compassion for him that I did when Carol realizing she was on the bad guy's side and yet never even apologizing to the kree
Captain Marvel is Superman with no Witnesses. No Jimmy Olsen, no Lois Lane, no Kryptonite, no magic, and most importantly no strong moral code.
With those limitations, It's pretty hard to write good Superman stories.
Without those limitations it basically impossible.
@@macmcleod1188 yes and no. I personally believe that the reason why writing superman stories are difficult is not only what you stated, it's the antagonist of the story. Who could possibly stand against a being that can fly at the speed of light and could bench press a planet? Some of the best superman stories have to due with morality. Lex Luthor is a criminal mastermind that superman could easily punt him to the moon but superman would be no better than him. The death of superman dealt with how would superman deal with an unstoppable force that will kill everything? All star superman dealt with how superman's life would mean when it ends. Anytime superman fights darkseid it's always a story of the ultimate good against the ultimate evil. Captain marvel has no such moral quandaries. No wait scratch that there was something in the movie but they didn't explore it. Carol has been a warrior for the kree for 5 years believing she was in the right until the truth was revealed to her. She never contemplated the amount of blood on her hands, the amount of innocent lives she helped destroy. She never showed remorse, nor did she apologized. Again I point to the example of ender in ender's game. He reacted like a human despite being a person who mostly uses logic and intellect. Captain marvel is a blank of wood and a terrible example of a hero

Funny thing about the Endgame movie. The scenes with Cpt Marvel are made in a way that the movie works completely without her.
and for a pretty heavy hitter character that’s just a mess
Bilbo Baggins I mean she did take down that giant spaceship and helped delivered the gauntlet but yea ant man could’ve done that too
@@johnc6158 Hulk could've done it... I woulda had him get angry at the thought of losing the fight after Widow sacrificed herself to give them a chance to win, World Breaker Hulk emerges, smashes the ship in one jump, creating a crater as he lands for a rematch with Thanos.
I actually didn't realize that until you mentioned it. They really didn't need captain marvel for it. Her intro in the movie was just trashy since thanos already destroyed the stones, her scenes in the final fight were a mess because she just came in and destroyed the ship when multiple other heroes could have done the same (i.e. good intro for world breaker hulk), and she didn't even deliver the gauntlet and caused a slight disturbance when she went to battle thanos. Like they messed up with that because how is he going to be overpowered with 6 stones, remove the power stone, and then just punch her with it even though he already had the power stone in the gauntlet in the first place. They could have just gotten thor over there, or hulk, or captain america, or just speed up with the iron man ending.
@@SA80TAGE Wrong. Hulk was severely weakened after the snap. Captain Marvel was the only one who was able to destroy it because for one it was a good entrance for her to enter the battle, two it gave a breathing room for the others who was bombarded and three Carol is one of the strongest character so far since this version is powered with the Infinity Stone. She also stopped Thanos when he was about to snap giving time for the other heroes and Tony to take the stone from Thanos.
Also, don't forget that without her Tony would have died from starvation in space.
The movie claims that Carol has trouble controlling her emotions, yet she has the personality of a piece of celery the entire time. Her eyes literally have no emotion.
Oh, Applesauce To some extent I agree. It may be because Carol is supposed to be an emotionless Kree or it may be because the producers went for a look and not an actress. I realize that, in Hollywood, the women must be beautiful. Some women decide to buff up and look like a warrior, like Linda Hamilton in T2. Some opt to not necessarily buff up but still hire a trainer who teaches them fighting skills. I’m thinking ScarJo here. I think that, as she played Black Widow over the years, she became Black Widow. That initial fight scene with Jude Law, Brie looked stiff and unathletic. Maybe she’ll grow into the role. Since she already has an Oscar, she may not think she “has to”. Still should be interesting. Will I see the sequel? Yes. In the theater? Hmmmmm......
Cindy Savage
Of course I will still watch stuff with her in it. I love the MCU, but at the moment I do not like her. I especially disliked her in Endgame, but as you said before it could be because she needs to develop. Then again, her character has been around for 20+ years by the time she meets up with the avengers and I think she should have been more developed into the hero she’s supposed to be. When she’s introduced to the avengers she’s pretty arrogant; almost as if no time passed between her solo movie and Endgame.
Jude Law was the one saying that. Not the movie. The reason is the suppressing tech wasn't strong enough to hold her powers so some emo guidance was needed. And yes, she has the personality of an upside down goldfish.
Solar Plexus Danvers did emo guidance wrong though, as opposed to someone like Raven. She’s kind of an emotionless asshat too sometimes, but at least she’s not hollow like miss photon sparkly knuckles
@@dylannix4289 Raven physically has to be emotionless though. CM is said to be constantly struggling with controlling her emotions, which she never displays.
Raven doesn't struggle, she just doesn't have the luxury of letting those emotions take hold. Carol is supposed to be emotional here, but she isn't. Raven is supposed to be emotionless, to a degree atleast.
I need this cut! Please, someone do this cut!
I generally like watching your videos, but this one is genius! You are spot on! That would have made a much better movie! Keep it up! Thanks for sharing with us!
Captain marvel fails in this way, yes, but it also fails for the classic MCU humor. The jokes seem forced as if the writer was trying too hard to make certain things funny that just aren’t. They also failed to show us that captain marvel is a hero in my opinion. Yes, she saved people, but she treats it more like a job than a calling. With Captain America, it’s what he stands for, and it’s obvious, it’s not a chore, it’s being good for the sake of being good
There are plenty of other elements in Captain Marvel that don't work: The Skrull impersonating Fury's boss not knowing Fury goes by Fury when the movie stipulates Skrulls take on the short term memory of those they transform into. The Skrull left behind for no reason other than as a plot device to die at the hands of the Kree. A ten year old encouraging her single mother to go on the final death defying mission. Absurd, stupid storytelling. One of the worst MCU movies hands down.
And because the film wasn’t character driven, it was agenda driven.
They wanted a powerful heroine to be in a girl power flick. This switched the product from building a great character into pushing a narrative, a narrative we’ve seen performed way better with way better characters in movies like Kill Bill and Velma & Louise.
If they were purely looking to create a great character movie, we would’ve probably gotten a solid MCU film since that would’ve been the writers’ focus. However, it is not which is why we have all the highly symbolic dialogue, flashbacks, and victories that aren’t earned because the character was though of afterwards.
I hope CM2 learns from CM’s mistakes and makes Carol a decent character worthy of the MCU....although I doubt it.
That';s true.Due to the lack of sense of humor that characterizes carol danvers trying to make the movie funny was not the best trade card
You better compare Captain marvel with Thor. Carol denvers didn't respect her powers like Thor did. Both the characters start off arrogant but Thor ends up being humble and respectful on the other hand Captain Marvel remains the same person with extra undeserving powers.
It only fails at humor if you were born after the year 2000. And lets face it there was NOTHING better to do for Captain America, every man wanted to go to war and punch a Nazi, it was that or stay state side and work metal with the ladies. Hmmm tough choice. What you read as a chore, I read as a struggle, and she should struggle with 2 different sets of memories competing inside her head, it made more human despite being the inhumanly powerful. I think they pulled it off beautifully.
My problem with this film is that there never seemed to be actual peril for Carol. Even before she got her full powers, she was unstoppable on the Skrull ship... while in handcuffs. The movie seemed to go out of its way to undercut any sense of real danger, like when Maria was reluctant to go into space to help Carol because it was dangerous and she had a child to take care of, and her girl talked her into it because it sounded fun and exciting. This made it boring.
I doubt anyone has ever felt that Cap or Thor or Any other number of heavy hitters in the MCU were in any sort of real peril and their movies are all deemed great. why is this the one "boring" exception to the rule? Why is Carol's emotional peril of realizing she's no longer sure what's real, and that everybody and everything she trusted and believed in might all be a lie not enough, but it's perfectly fine for Thor and Tony Stark in their origin stories?
Thor was pretty boring because he is pretty much indestructible. That movie got by on beefcake and a Stan Lee cameo. Captain America, however is still human and killable. Iron Man also nearly dies a few times (actually that's how he gets his powers). Captain Marvel was boring because, we don't SEE her backstory or character while Cap and Iron Man had a half a movie to establish theirs. The novelty of the amnesia is what made it watchable for me, but once was enough.
Agreed
Over powered and boring
@@katieschoon9436 Because Tony and Thor both had character arcs, without ever being in danger. They each struggled with something personally (Tony realising that his weapons were making the world a dangerous place and Thor that to be a leader is different to being a warrior and war monger) and became a hero at the end of the film.
Captain Marvel didnt struggle with anything. We're told she struggles with emotions but never see it. In the opening scene she is literally tied up with her arms bound and she escapes in two minutes by blasting her powers. At the end of the film with all her powers unlocked, she solves her problems by blasting her powers. There's no journey, there's no character learning, there's no arc. She never did anything terrible for the Kree. The character at the start is the same as at at the end.
You absolutely nailed it again.

Middle of the movie: I'm a strong woman who doesn't need anyone telling her what to do. But who am I?
End of movie: I finally know who I am: I'm a strong woman who doesn't need anyone telling her what to do.
I am honestly glad I actually enjoyed Captain Marvel unlike most people who hated it... still trying to understand that
@@BloodMoneyy for my first view it was really boring since she is more like a robot rather than a human being with flaws.
Hollywood's problem with strong feminist heroes is they make them too strong pretty early without any flaws. Like Rey from Star Wars, can mind trick in just first movie without any mentor.. while Luke needed a mentor and did it in the 3rd movie. With Luke it felt like an achievement, with Rey it felt like a nostalgic joke.
I think what made the "I'm a woman hear me roar" thing annoying is that Marvel had done nothing to earn it. Like sure, you're all about the wimmen. That's why you waited 20 movies to put one in the lead. Their feminism was as empty as Kylie Jenner in a pepsi commercial.
Agreed, she totally blew it.
Several Characters talk to Captain Marvel about how Emotional she is
Captain Marvel: Barely Changes expressions throughout the Entire Film
thats what made me confused as well. they keep SAYING shes emotional, but she doesnt show any emotions in the whole film. shes throws some quips and thats about it. shes never in any real danger, and she never loses control of her emotions. they fell into the trap that female leads have these days, theyre mary sues. all power, no weakness, and no character development. Rey from the new star wars trilogy is a perfect example of this. always OP.
@@titotheninja You said it best.
They could have had her hesitate to kill a Skroll and get called out for her emotions getting in the way, setting up that slaughtering them might be the wrong thing to do.
I’d let her arc echo Tony’s with her being consumed by guilt and rage when she realizes that she was being used to murder innocents.
Instead both she and the Skrolls are pretty nonchalant about it.
@@titotheninja I couldn't agree more. She never cracks a smile or makes a frown the entire movie. She begins to tear up once for 10 secs when her friend tells her who she is.... it is like they are scared to make female leads human -- it is precisely one's vulnerabilities, that creates the opportunity to become a hero -- the process of moving in the face of the vulnerability. But in this movie, she's OP even before she gets her powers. Undermines the very foundation of super hero story telling.

Dude…I was actually running into that problem with an amnesiac character in a story I’m writing, I’ve been trying to figure out how to show the audience who she is and- yeah, that’s some serious good advice, I’m subscribed now.
In this film, the hero embrace her feelings, while the villain tells her to control them. I love how this works for the heroes in some films, but in others such as star wars, it's the exact opposite. Jedi control their emotions while sith fully embrace them. It shows how relative these kind of philosophies are, and I love it
I think the scene in which Steve Rogers falls on the grenade (he doesn't know its a fake grenade) to save others was the best character defining scene in the whole MCU!!
How about tony carrying a missile bigger enough to destoy the NY city and sending it to chitori army base..
When I saw Capt. Marvel in the theater, I tried so hard to relate to her. Hell, I'm blonde (more strawberry now, but I was near platinum as a kid), I have blue eyes, I was very tomboyish as a kid, I played a full-contact co-ed sport in undergrad, and now I'm a woman in a STEM Master's program - this character was practically designed for someone like me! I left the theater so disappointed and sad.
Yeah, I relate much more to Steve Rogers than to Carol Danvers. I even used to whisper "I can do this all day" during tackling drills and when I got tackled/grappled during games, especially when the tackler/grappler was a man. You best believe I channeled that Steve Rogers tenacity and stubbornness, because I was known for keeping possession of the ball even when I got tackled by someone twice my size or locked in a grappling match with someone significantly stronger than I.
Brilliant. Thanks for the post. I would much rather see a movie about you than this version of Captain Marvel. Plenty of examples out there like yourself that the writers should have drawn upon. Bravo
Haha, I love that detail about you during your drills. Captain America was the first Marvel movie I saw (Iron Man had a couple racy parts in it so I wasn't allowed to see it at first). I loved that movie and I always thought he was such a cool role model, especially during the fake grenade scene.
I wasn't expecting anything bad from a movie, but was ready to just leave because of one thing - her former partner and her discussing how "the boys don't allow us to fly real planes and don't treat us as real pilots"... while they are both test pilots for experimental aircraft. Because Gagarin, Armstrong, Tereshkova and dozens of others "weren't real pilots" apparently. This was a straw that almost broke the camel's back for me. To see Disney, who is already licking up to Penthagon a lot just to get free equipment for filming(from taxpayer pocket), daring to open its mouth and say such a thing.
Otherwise it wasn't so bad. Have a nice day:D
One of the things I feel not just Captain Marvel, but also people in general have completely forgotten for some reason, is that role models aren't gender exclusive. You can be a girl and look up to a man, or be a boy and look up to a woman. It isn't their gender that defines them. If it were Stephanie Rogers, I'd still think Captain America is a damn good person with a super strong and respectable character. Hell, a lot of my favorite characters tend to be Women for no other reason than me liking who they are and what they represent.
Yep. Because the whole idea that people only relate to characters that are the same gender/ethnicity/age/blah blah blah is completely untrue. Well said if you!
Your story sequence makes a whole lot more sense.
Must say great insight! It does make a huge difference.
Omg your re-written version had so much power! I would have rooted for her so much more in that version, instead of hating her in the original.
Captain Marvel: She’s powerful
Captain America: he’s a dude trying to do right and needs to sacrifice what he wants for the fate of the world.
So having the courage to stand up to the people you thought were your allies for 5 years, and to defend a civilization of refugees isn't her trying to doing right?
@@jonathanfoster4202 yes bro, but the movie doesn’t frame it that way. I’d love for her movie to have a much more powerful message rather than just telling us she’s powerful and introducing the kree
@@emilygarza7197 i feel like it did tho🤨
@@jonathanfoster4202 no, it isn't at all. It's just her fighting back against the evil dudes that kidnapped her and mind-controlled her.
At that point is not really a choice to do the right thing, she's just fighting against evil, why would she care if they were her allies when it was revealed they are evil?
It would have been completely different if they weren't evil, if they hadn't controlled her to that point and if the other guys weren't completely victims and refugees so she had to come to a tough decision on her own.
But as is presented in the movie, no. If you're kidnapped and lied and you break free and fight back, that's not "doing the right thing". It's just the obvious thing to do, there is no sacrifice (specially if you're completely overpowered), no stakes, no choice, nothing.
What is the message? Fight back against evil dudes who harmed you directly? That's nothing.
@@92brunod so nazi germany and red skull weren't evil? Is it really that much more heroic to fight against them?
You have greatly improved the experience of this film.
Your channel is brilliant! Your attention to detail is brilliant!
I couldn't initially understand why I didn't enjoy this movie, but your suggestion of chronological order hit the nail on the head.
Have you ever considered screenwriting?!
I wished you were the person who wrote the movie, your idea sounds PERFECT
No but he is a guy. Having a guy write a movie like this is a terrible idea. Ps it took 6 females and 1 guy to write this movie. Jesus
@@h.ar.2937 it’s not necessarily a terrible idea. Guys can have smart ideas for feminist movies, or just a superhero movie, cuz that’s what this movie was supposed to be. Just a superhero one
@@torri4295 I guess I suck at sounding sarcastic lol. I meant that some extremists would find it appalling that a ‘guy’ wrote a movie for a female-led superhero (even though there is nothing wrong with it). And in this very particular case, his fix for the movie sounds a LOT better than what we actually got. You’re right though
@@h.ar.2937 and i guess i suck at getting sarcasm. People who think or say that, just don’t understand movies and how they’re made
@@torri4295 this is y I didn’t like this movie it felt more like a feminist movie then a superhero movie
I feel The First Avenger is so underrated. A lot of people talk badly of it because it's communicates American patriotism that was very much there in the 1940's by default and even enhanced by wartime propaganda. I think The First Avenger is one of the best MCU movies and I'm not even an American conservative and generally find overblown American patriotism annoying. Captain Marvel however is one of the worst.
Yeah, I really liked First Avenger. I'm one of the only people I know who rates it higher than Winter Soldier. I actually felt Winter Soldier was a bit ho-hum. Of course, I like "period" stuff as well as Superhero stuff so it appeals in that sense. Part of the reason Wonder Woman was so awesome as well (that and good acting and story-telling) Captain Marvel was just kind of forgettable. Nothing in it really appealed. And I was a teenager/young adult throughout the 90's so they had plenty of opportunities to hit that Nostalgia button... never managed it though.
I just dont like the generic typical montage that happens midway thru. It makes it feel like its just going thru the numbers.
I also love the bonus scene in Endgame where Rhoadey asks cap why he didnt just jump out of the flying wing before he crashed it. lol
The First Avenger is a great movie. Even if it had lots of American patriotism (it doesn't!), it would still be a great movie. America is fighting Hitler. How can one comply about a people being proud of defeat Hitler?!? (I am Brazilian).
For me it is the best, most heart warming and inspiring origin story i have seen on the big screen
Captain marvel is the most plainly told story in a tried and tested formula...the same reason i disliked doctor strange..compared to that i feel ant man and the wasp should have got more traction as one of the 2 movies before endgame -- they just wanted to create a hype abt a Powerful female superhero - and brie Larson does not remotely embody anything of a likeable superhero, going by her off screen persona and i pray to god MCU doesnt focus on captain marvel as the protagonist of he phase 4...i just don't want to see any more of brie Larson as CM
It's likely a War Movie + Indiana Jones movie, a cool combination
You really should be a director for marvel. Your arrangement for how the captain marvel should be done is brilliant.
cool analysis!
Carol doesn't have character. That's why it was so hard to define it.
True that's why we didn't mind Rouge taking her powers lul. Rather had Monica Rambeau over Carol tbh
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes did pretty good with her.
@@AesculapiusPiranha tbh, that's the only time I actually liked Carol
She is someone who stay in military environment, tho. Like, I can see why she has to be that try hard. Woman in military or Human in Kree army have to act that tough.
@@yothiga Both Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter managed to be characters despite the military setting. So i call bullshit.
The Vision is more emotional and passionate than Captain Marvel by a lot, and he is literally a pc, do I need to add anything?
She was brainwashed, what kind of emotional range did you expect
@@robinlee3999 and the other is a computer, i don't see your point
Brie cheese is a bad actor that’s why she had no emotion throughout the movie
I’m just saying, I don’t see a lot people chastising the winter soldier for showing little emotion
@@robinlee3999 He showed way more emotion than captain marvel thank you.
I like both movies and your right about a few things. But all in all awesome video bro
