    Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker are very similar movies. But we think there is one scene that makes one of them a classic that was the perfect capstone to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first three phases. And the other was a disappointing attempt to bring closure to a franchise that will continue forever. Here are some similarities:
    Each movie is attempting to wrap up a huge saga that includes tv shows and trilogies and comics.
    The heroes are recovering after a loss in the last movie, and are struggling to gain traction. Rey can’t hear the other jedi, and the avengers have no way to stop thanos. To win the day, heroes have to come to a reconciliation with their own past and heritage [tony and howard, rey and her parents]
    There’s a cameo from a dead father that helps one of the heroes get his mind right.
    The villain was presented sympathetically in the last movie, but now the main villain is just pure evil. And each movie features the return of villains we thought were dead [thanos and palpatine]
    The heroes have to all go off on a caper together, before splitting off into teams, then coming together again in the final battle. Along the way, we revisit past locations and characters from the franchise. [Lando clip, ancient one clip]
    One of the heroes is tempted by her evil father figure in the final act, and another hero sacrifices herself to save everyone else.
    In the climax, heroes from other films and franchises show up to save the day.
    It takes two of the heroes who were always at odds to team up and defeat the bad guy.
    And another hero learns a lot about themselves by having a talk with a dead parent figure.
    Both movies end with the death of a hero, sacrificing himself to defeat the villain and save the universe. The other hero leaves the past behind and moves forward with his life, passing on a legendary name.
    In the last battle, all is lost as the hero stands alone, then they receive help from pretty much everyone in the franchise who is still alive.

      The whole Sequel Tragedy was poorly written, unplanned and had complete disregard for the franchise and the fans.
      Despite many flaws (another old decrepit guy seducing a young Skywalker to the Dark Side, Starkiller Base… which I thought was overkill until we got 10 gazillion Super Death Star Destroyers… Rey being instantly awesome at everything, zero world building etc.), The Force Awakens could have still been salvaged by someone who gave a $#!+ about Star Wars… but we got Ruin Johnson instead.

      There's a major difference though. Disney was trying to create a new story, and it was very obvious that their writers couldn't agree. There is nothing cohesive in the new trilogy. Marvel on the other hand already has the characters, the storylines, and just has to adapt them to film. They do an excellent job, but the ground work is already there.

    Even hearing the breakdown of the plot of Endgame, hearing the storylines and significant plot points, it just took me back to the first time I watched Endgame and emotion swelled up. The first time i watched Endgame, I literally cried. A grown man crying, watching a movie with his son. Why? I was 12 when Iron Man was released, I am now 25. I grew up with the MCU. When Endgame was released, my son was 5 and we got so hype together. I felt every Easter egg and connection they showcased in Endgame. It literally felt like this huge, beautiful ending to one ENORMOUS story that I've been following for half of my life.
    But watching this, I literally felt my chest beating and getting heavy as Ryan kept explaining the movie and upping the stakes and I just felt the weight of the movie while watching THIS video. *THAT* is how you know the Russo brothers have created an absolute *masterpiece* with Avengers Endgame. They did the impossible with Endgame, and it can be replicated, but that feeling will never be duplicated. The first franchise to achieve something like this, with multiple franchises trying but failing.
    Like Rise of Skywalker.

      I have no problem saying that Endgame is a masterpiece and I don’t feel that way about any other comic book based film. Closest would be Dark Knight, and the one other masterpiece in the fantasy action genre in the last 10 years is Mad Max: Fury Road.
      Endgame takes chances and has lots of depth that the other MCU film’s don’t have.
      Most of the complaints about the film are quite shallow:
      People don’t like Thor getting fat, Professor Hulk evolving, or characters dying, or Steve Rogers getting old.
      Basically *nothing real* should happen, so they can keep watching film equivalent of a cartoon aimed at 7 year olds…which they’ve apparently never outgrown. Lol.

    The other comparison that shows why rise of skywalker doesn't work is LOTR: Return of the King. It has a very similar, all hope is lost scene when the army of Rohan shows up. But, it's not a surprise like in Endgame. In ROTK, you know help is on the way for a long time like in ROS. Yet, it really, really works.

    • @Skull1Hunter
      @Skull1Hunter 2 года назад +8

      Even though the Rohan army is confirmed to be on the way, there is still tension there. It's not a question of "will Rohan help?" but instead "will Rohan arrive in time to make a difference?" Even after they arrive, they realize they're outnumbered, yet still fight to save Gondor. Those are why, I believe it works in Return of the King.

    18:30 - I think this is actually the most compelling point. Cap never surrenders and is ready to die fighting the good fight. Meanwhile Po, in a franchise that glorifies *hope*, gives up at the 11th hour.
    20:12 - The big difference between these moments is that "Activate instant kill" makes sense 100% in that moment, and also happens to be a fan-service reference. Chewie getting a medal makes no sense in the context of its own movie. It's literally just there for fans.

    • @kevinphiggins

    I love both franchises, very much, for different reasons.
    I had two very strong reactions to both scenes when I saw them in theaters. For the Avengers Endgame, all is lost moment, I was so sucked in that you could've sold me a years supply of estrogen and I probably would have bought it. Whereas with Star Wars, I was so dejected and uninterested that I just wanted it to end already.
    During Endgame when everyone showed up, it was unexpected, and I was on the verge of tears, I had the same reaction as Ryan like "LETS FUCKING GO, ITS ON NOW". Whereas with Star Wars, I think I audibly groaned in the theaters and rolled my eyes, it just felt forced. One was earned and the other took shortcuts. It also didn't help that Endgame came out 6 months prior to Star Wars, so it kinda felt like "this has been done already".
    The last time we really had a good "all hope is lost" only to be saved at the 11th hour scene, before Endgame came out was probably in the LOTR series, both in ROTK in the battle of Minas Tirith and TTT in the battle of Helms Deep.

The Clone Wars, Rebels, Jedi: Fallen Order, The Bad Batch, and The Mandalorian show the polish that the new era of Star Wars is capable of. I can only hope that trend continues

      Disney definitely isn’t bad at Star Wars, but the sequels needed a better, proper structure. At the very least, if we got Duel of the Fates instead, people wouldn’t be as mad.

    Let's hope Filoni and Favreau stay on the franchise long enough to redeem the Sequel Trilogy with quality retroactive continuity stories the way they did the Prequel Trilogy.

    • @vetarlittorf1807
      @vetarlittorf1807 2 года назад +4

      The difference is that the prequel trilogy by itself is already better than the sequels, mainly because Lucas formatted and mapped it from the beginning, the visuals are more creative and the characters are more likable (especially Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and Palpatine). The only problem was that Lucas doesn't work well with actors and often fails to make conversations sound natural. Also, Filoni didn't redeem the prequels. The whole TCW is basically a reboot of the Clone Wars multimedia project that ran from 2002-2006. And Filoni already had a chance to redeem the sequels with Resistance but he failed.

    • @ultrabrian8151

      They won’t redeem that sequel trilogy, they’re retconning it actually pretty much.

    • @captainjefferies9047
      @captainjefferies9047 Год назад +1

      The prequel trilogy was already great, much better than anything Filoni or Favreau ever did. Them relying on already done great work isn't them redeeming anything.
      That you think there is any redeeming the sequel trilogy is further proof that you have no idea what you are talking about.

    I honestly lost my sh1t in the theatre when I saw Wedge one last time, like a total break down, but that was it. It was the first Star Wars movie that I felt skeptical while watching it. It just didn’t work, nothing in it landed for me (except Wedge, but it’s like 3 seconds). Avengers Assemble moment - I am in tears every time, just can’t help myself, it’s just so good!

    It's amazing how The Last Jedi killed any anticipation I had towards Episode IX. I remember thinking that Infinity War on the other hand excelled at hyping up a conclusion. It was those diverging philosophies that turned me from a lifelong Star Wars fan into a Marvel guy (as far as upcoming films are concerned).

    I agree with most of this, but I'm getting a little tired of people misunderstanding the medal scene. That was Han's medal, Leia was holding is as she died, Maz gave it to Chewbacca because it would hold more sentimental value to him than anyone else. Yes, it's also a tongue-in-cheek reference to Chewy not getting a medal in the first movie, but it still makes sense in-universe.

      What was great is we didn't really know it was going to happen. We knew they were all snapped back, but they were all over the place, titan, wakanda, etc. We also weren't sure if cap was going to survive so there was a chance they'd arrive in time to stop Thanos, but too late to save cap. The stakes were sky high.
