    Justice League and the Avengers are very similar movies. But one revolutionized modern cinema, and the other was a Frankenstein's monster that managed to please literally no one.
    In this video we break down one scene that shows why one movie worked, and the other didn't.

      The Avengers is Josh Whedon's own project. And it's a totally different scenario about Josh Whedon's take over of a project that isn't his. And the intentions of doing each project are also 100% different. So, I totally disagree with this channel's opinion of why one worked and the other one didn't. Got it!
      And the reason why most Marvel movies are a hit is people are.not as familiar with their characters as those from DC and thus the curiosity is much higher. This curiosity is due to unpopularity of Marvel's comics and TV animated shows compared to that of DC.

    First of all, holy crap, I never realized Justice League drew so many similarities from Avengers. Second, this comparison easily shows why the MCU has been beyond more successful than other cinematic universes. No other studio wants to take the time and investment to build up the universe itself and employ the visionary leadership that it takes to do it. Marvel Studios has Kevin Feige and his team, which are allowed the freedom to make MCU movies without much executive oversight. They're trusted to make good movies and the revenues speak for themselves. Warner Bros on the other hand hires directors but they're given all kinds of demands to incorporate into the movie, mostly to sell toys and maximize the profits of the movies. There's no regard for the actual art and film-making part of the process. Because execs at Warner Bros are old school. Before the MCU, super-hero movies were never regarded as true movie art, just conduits for other revenue generation, like toys. The MCU comes along and not only proves that notion wrong but essentially blows it out of the water, to the point where many Hollywood execs and directors are still having trouble with that reality to this day.

    There’s also a bigger thing that makes Marvel work…we grew with most of the characters. Most of them all had their own movies and interactions outside of the movie so we grew with them. Not much of the case with DC and their many shifts from continuity and changes.

    • @fedeu
      @fedeu 2 года назад +3

      I think this only applies if you are less than 24 and grew up watching the MCU movies. If you are older than that, you've maybe seen Iron Man cartoons and Hulk. But Captain America, Hawkeye, Thor, black widow, scarlet witch, none of those characters had much presence on the media exceptfor the comics. Marvel went bankrupt in 1996, son at that point the only movies we had seen were spiderman and fantastic 4 and X-men, because they sold those rights to sony.
      On the other hand, DC had batman, Superman and wonder woman everywhere, Flash was always knowns as the "fast" superhero, Cyborg was in teen titans, and well, Aquaman was kind of a meme at that point. But everybody knew those guys.

      @@fedeu I’m actually older than 24 and only had exposure to the MCU movies (plus The Incredible Hulk and four Spider-Man movies). Captain America and Thor both had movies prior to The Avengers, and Black Widow appeared in Iron Man 2. Scarlet Witch didn’t appear until Ultron (not including post credits scenes). Hawkeye was new but the majority of the heroes we were already presented with in the MCU.
      Edit: Missed the DC Universe parts of your post but I didn’t feel like I connected with most of those characters because although they were presented, they were presented in different formats and with different actors so it didn’t feel cohesive.

    • @fedeu
      @fedeu 2 года назад +6

      @@HylianDrew94 Oh ok, yeah, maybe the age restriction I set was unnecesary. And yes, the MCU built it's universe movie by movie, so it was 10 years ahead of DC when they finally assembled a team.
      But I meant to say that many of this DC characters were already known to older people because of cartoons, movies and pop culture. So DC kinda thought that they could skip the individual movies and go straight to the team. Which could have been a good idea, if the story was compelling enough, which it wasn't. Guardians of the galaxy is a movie with a team of unknowns, and it does work, because the story and the characters are better written.

From the 1960s, DC has been a copycat wannabe. Why did Warner HAVE to higher Joss Whedon. There are many other directors. WHY did it HAVE to be the Avengers director? Why did DC HAVE to get Daredevil’s writer (Frank Miller) to make Batman popular in the late 70s and 80s??? Why did OMAC project come out directly after Operation: Zero Tolerance in the 90s??? The “Judas Contract” comes out in response to the mother of all comic stories and female centric “Dark Phoenix” saga??? Just some evidence. Inspiration is one thing. @@avisian8063 Yes marvel had the same amount of material to prepare for avengers but instead of using that as background for the movie, they used it as source material to make each of the solo films that were then used as background for the avengers movie. JL only made movies to set up JL for characters that didn't already have movies, and not even all of them at that. Not everyone has seen the old cartoons or read the comics so introducing the flash and cyborg to them now with no context could be confusing (When marvel did it, the 'new' characters had already made appearances in other films and didnt have any super powers, so even without solo films they werent new). Then they also included characters like batman and superman which, aside from batman v superman, didn't get new movies to set up for JL. They only made solo films for some of the characters (Wonder Woman and Aquaman) when they should've made at least one movie for each of the characters. That would've set up the audience to recognize the actors, understand their powers, and already know their backstory before the movie started. Instead of establishing backstory for half the characters at the start of the film, they could've made references to them like in avengers.
      TL;DR Yes justice league was rushed but marvel didn't rely entirely on their older material for the ensemble film, they made solo films to prep the audience while JL assumed teyh already knew things

    My biggest problems with justice league and the DC movies in general is that they put Superman on a pedestal far above the other heroes. Superman is basically the savior of all, has only one weakness, Lois lane once again is the only one that can tame him when he wakes up, he easily beats Stepenwolf even tho he is supposed to be at max power . I always enjoyed Superman growing up but they have made him the central character of justice league. The Avengers did a much better job highlighting each individual characters strengths and weakness.

With other characters that have similar powers but actual weaknesses (Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman) why have Superman other than he's DCs posterboy. @museruse1 3 года назад +24

      @@golfgod6243 Yeah, this is true, many heroes in Marvel acquired their powers rather than be born with them, and it was actually quite fulfilling to follow that journey. In DC too, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Cyborg, etc acquired their powers. Superman was born a normal kid on Krypton and was powerful as a result of being sent to another planet. Wonder woman trained, made mistakes and learnt before becoming 'The' Wonder Woman (a problem I have with 1984 is that they left out this arc, I agree) and characters like Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter were probably born with their powers.
      I agree that something like Captain America's whole story arc with Bucky is stunningly beautiful, but similarly, the lore around The Joker and Two Face etc. in DC doesn't fall short of anything.

I never even HEARD of Iron Man before the movie. Hulk is a special case, with years of Bill Bixby on TV. But Capt America is just a name from yesteryear's comics to me, like Flash Gordon. Thor and Loki are from the myth. Never heard of Hawkeye and Black Widow. The Avengers are NEW shit to me, whereas the comic book Superman is dead no wait he's alive in the next issue nonsense has been tiresome for years. DC has to *overcome* the long history of their tired old characters everytime they make a movie, and you ALWAYS wonder if it will be boring and stupid.

      @Scorpiono Productions I would disagree. My brothers and I are Marvel fans, but we grew up watching a lot of the DC animated series, different iterations of Superman and Batman shows, Wonder Woman, and The Flash. I go back to even Ultra Boy and Mater Eater Lad in the comics. And, by the way, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman were known by a lot more people than Thor and Iron Man before the movies became popular. In fact, I never really liked Iron man or Captain America growing up. Thor was marginal. I still watch animated DC movies to this day and enjoy many of them. The Flashpoint Paradox is one of my favorites. DC owned (and in my opinion still owns) the small screen. However, Marvel has done a much better job on the big screen. The stories are better crafted, better plotted, and acted. Also, the Avengers seem to be about how we can overcome our difference and work together. TJL seems to be about how can we ressurect SM. Let's face it, SM can do it all by himself. He and WW are essentially gods. In fact, according to one of the animated movies, Batman hasn't figured out a weakness for WW. The Avengers are made up of humans and people with failings. Even the one God, Thor, is not the same without his hammer. Iron Man can put up a fight against Thor, so can CA. However, it's likely they'd lose. Superman can beat all of them by himself, unless they have kryptonite. The Avengers all have failings, whether its rage, a piece of shrapnel moving toward a person's heart, guilt, or just being human. I think that's one of the things missing from TJL. Another thing is this, since the characters from Avengers weren't as well known. they introduced them little by little. You're right. People knew about Spider man (animated series, and tv shows), but before the movies, far more people knew about Superman and Batman. Those two characters alone have had far more iterations on both the small screen and the large screen than any marvel character before the whole MCU really came together.
      One las thing: It's not a Marvel vs. DC fan thing. I've heard people say that from time to time. Many people who are marvel fans loved Christoper Nolans trilogy. We also watched and loved some of the Tim Burton Batman films. Many of us grew up watching Superman or Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. I don't hate DC. I just don't really think the movies are as good as many of the Marvel Movies. Sorry for the dissertation. Be well.

      @@queenofnevers6990 I aspecially disliked the Thor Movies, because of the bad plot telling. The Sidecharacters were simply not enjoyable. They told the loki part in a good way, which was needed for the later movies, but Jane Foster and his War Buddies, boy these characters could have been left out. No difference to the story line. But Marvel did make a movie, however bad it was, for almost all of their characters. DC didn't invest in the Story telling and proper Introduction of their characters. Superman and Wonderwoman were the only characters properly introduced and Aquaman got his introduction later on. I didn't like the Flash interpretation. His character simply wouldn't fit and was really pale compared to the comic series or even the TV-Version. They simply rushed the whole thing, because Marvel started the whole "Hero Hipe" early, and they wanted in on the money wave. Now I have seen all those movies, because I am a big fan of the DC comic series on TV. The superman Movie was really good in my opinion, but BvS was really bad story telling, Justic League was even worse. Maybe the snider cut might make the Justice league a little more watch-worthy, maybe. And I also have to watch the uncut version BatVSup movie. Kind regards.

When he died in BVS I doubt anyone actually cared, for one he was completely unrelatable, and for the other we all knew he wasn't going to stay dead. His death was cheap and unnecessary in the grand scheme of things and although I cannot read his mind but it feels blatantly obvious that killing off Superman served only 2 purposes for Snyder: cheap shock value, and to give him a reason to fight the other members of the Justice League and beat the shit out of them, so Snyder can further establish his power level and make him even more of a god.

    The Avengers was carefully planned in advance with multiple individual movies to set up the group. A lot of groundwork was laid. Nearly all the characters were introduced prior.
    The DCU was rushed. Half the Justice League was introduced in the movie (Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman). Of the remaining 3, Superman was the only character introduced into the DCU with a solo film (Batman and Wonder Woman being introduced in BvS), with Wonder Woman having a solo film between BvS and JL.

    • @timmyhkvt
      @timmyhkvt 2 года назад

      Even more than that, the Avengers starts with six people: Cap, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thor. Four of these people need some serious explanation, each getting their own movie, and two not so much - IM2 was enough to give us Widow's deal, and Hawkeye's few scenes in Thor were similarly pretty adequate. Five steps leading into the teamup, four and a half if you discount Hulk's turn being removed from the MCU.
      Meanwhile, DC gets a grand total of three movies before they rush in, and they waste two of them on reintroducing characters who've been in the public eye for decades - not to mention killing one of them. So three weird-ass metahumans need time in this movie to show who they are and what they do, in addition to resurrecting Superman. Justice League got rushed, and as a consequence has to be super-long or not have time for an actual plot.

      Another one with the same stupid argument.
      That ain't a Standard for Storytelling.
      A writer can tell the story the way he wants since he is the author.
      He can drop "3 to 4 to 5 big events" whatever he wants IF it fits with what he is telling.
      By your logic every movie needs to build up his audience before THE movie with each individual character that there is.
      You see how pointless that argument is?

    • @keyblader2k6
      @keyblader2k6 3 года назад +8

      @@ericalexcantero8249 ok ill bite.
      most movies dont usually have 6 lead characters in a single movie.
      while you are correct that isnt a standard for story telling, the fact is the general movie audience isnt familiar with half of this movie's justice league team. sure, they may recognize flash or aquaman but could they tell me their basic origin stories or even their alter ego names without looking it up or someone helping them out? im sure you personally can but the vast majority of them can NOT and thats not even including cyborg. releasing multiple movies prior to the big team up would have given audience much more familiarity with these characters and you wouldnt have to spend so much of the big team up movie building them up and instead focus on the plot itself. introducing those 3 in a single scene from one previous movie, showing off their abilities in videos and not even interacting with the big 3 isnt just lazy and rushed, its boring.
      at this point, you might be thinking "marvel didnt release a black widow movie or a hawkeye movie before avengers 1." while this is true as well, black widow did have a significant part in both story importance and screen time in iron man 2. while hawkeye only had a small cameo in thor 1 and got the short end of the 6 in terms of prior exposure, he was built up during the events of avengers 1 vs justice league having to build up 3. maybe if flash had more than a single cameo in suicide squad, aquaman had a significant part in wonder woman and cyborg in man of steel but none of that ever happened.
      now, you might also be thinking, "blame wb/dc for rushing things. snyder was just doing the job he was hired on for." while true again, hes not some rookie director making a film about original characters for sundance. hes using THE most recognizable superheroes in the world and putting them alongside 3 others who are nowhere NEAR their level and releasing that movie worldwide, on top of constant worldwide advertisement. expecting the general audience to do prior research such as reading comic books, watching animated movies or the arrowverse shows in order to offset that giant differential and understand a movie isnt a standard for story telling either.

    I think we could summarize the diferences between The Avengers and Justice League very easily.
    Like said in the video, Justice League is a Frankenstein's monster of comic references and cool short scenes, stitched together with the new DC Comic somber style.
    The Avengers is an organic, coherent story, that is able to seamlessly insert comic references and comidy.
    Why did they need Superman? they didnt, they faced Steppenwolf and won in the scene before.
    They want him because its a cool thing that the comics did.
    What did Superman death contribute to the story? nothing, because they resurected him immediately without a real threat that only he could stop. But again, it was a cool shot to have in Batman V Superman, and Superman coming back it was a cool scene aswell.
    Ultimately the DC Comics movies are just a compilation of cool scenes that have no real emotional impact, its cool to see once but you quickly forget about it.
    Marvel in that regard have been much better, they create an emotional conection to the characters, and when things happen, they have weight, people dont die and come back just because, there is always a price to pay.
    Iron Mans sacrifice didnt have the impact it did because of the sacrifice he made, it was because we saw Tony Starks evolution from the self centered playboy billionare to the hero the whole universe admires.
    DC wanted Justice League without a backstory (arguably having only one movie to set it up).
    Marvel had The Avengers 4 years in the making, having 5 movies to set it up.

      @@jjones2582 No but there is a theory that's faded away a bit in that people will get comic book movie fatigue. By the time DC got in the game Marvel was hitting it's stride and even today DC still isn't as consistent as Marvel has been

    • @IronTonyStark
      @IronTonyStark 3 года назад +8

      @@13Mizzou DC is not consistent because WB doesn't understand the film potential of the potential of the vastibrary they own mor do they realise how to realize that potential on film. It also doesn't help that they hired the wrong people from the start to shape the direction of the movies...although that dovetails into not understanding how to realize the potential of DC on film.
      Then when they finally got a mega fan with encyclopedic knowledge of DC and seasoned/celebrated writer of many of their comics during this century to serve as a Feige like figure for DC films, they scapegoated him and fans complained it wasn't consistent with the other movies, even though the shift in tone had to be cobbled into previously shot footage, but was overall more consistent with the actual DC comics and spirit of the characters.
      So the bottom line, WB doesn't know what they have or how to maximize it and the fans don't know what they want.
      Now AT&T is pulling rank and going back to the original flawed interpretation and a vocal monority in Twitter are happy with that view being amplified by the entertainment media because it suits the new corporate narrative.
      Sigh.
