  • My very first task given at my first job starting out as a diesel tech. My prior work experience was well testing with the last 7 years in deep water offshore.

    Using a cutting torch to remove old frame should be easy . Frame rails about 285” inches long cost around $3900 a pair plain no drilled. Magnetic drill does the job very easy too.

    What happened that the frame needed replacement? I have a Mack that needs a new frame due to rust causing separation between the double frame.

      This was a concrete mixer that wasn’t built with a double frame. It had a crack due to a Huk bolt coming loose. It was over the rear drive axle. Do you live up north where they salt the roadways?

    This video is excellent, I have an International dump truck with cracked frames. I will have so many questions, but to start, I can see all support stands except how the engine was kept in place, how was it supported?. Also, the fasteners and air tool looks like a necessity, what is the tooling called? Also, where did the frames get made? I am thinking of ordering blank frames and drilling holes myself. Thanks!

    • @jiavin25
      @jiavin25  Год назад +3

      Well from my experience, you would do more harm than good to drill your own holes. The crossmembers have to line up to each frame rail perfectly. The manufacturer makes them, but these were supplied by the customer. To Support the engine I took a solid steel straight alignment bar (flat on 1 side/pointed on the other) it was 1/2” too long but once I got the combination right by grinding the point down I could get the floor jack in to support the front passenger side. I used blocks for nearly everything. It’s complicated because you have bolts that won’t come out until you adjust other parts. The leaf spring hanger on this one is with the body mount bracket and ….you just have a lot to consider. I got one side with a few crossmembers done in like 90 - 100 hours. The tool is called a Huk bolt gun and is necessary because the clamping force is is 23,000 - 26,000 lbs in tensile strength…more than a 5/8” bolt with crown nuts. However this was a concrete mixer. The overall repair was around $60K I think. Having done 3 of these trucks I wouldn’t recommend doing it as a side project due to the help and equipment needed/required. The gun was $14K, the jack was $3,500, plus smaller air operated bottle jacks. Altogether 3 trucks - one needing both rails replaced along with the trunnion I-beam and brackets over the rear axles, and 3 crossmembers with brackets to rails is what I’ve done. None came back, but you have to consider a lot when doing a project like it. I can upload a video if interested in seeing some more complexity. Thanks for your comment. I hope it all works out in whichever way you decide to go.

      @jiavin25  Год назад +1

      That ticket was roughly $15K in labor. We don’t know what the frame rail cost because the customer supplied them all (for 3 trucks in total). Each one was 38’ with all holes pre-drilled.

      @@jiavin25 was it a single or double frame? How long did it take from start to finish? What's your backlog like?

    • @jiavin25
      @jiavin25  Год назад

      No idea what the back log is because I moved out of state. All of the trucks that the brought us were single frames. The last one I’d done was replacing both frame rails. They talked about ordering their knew trucks with double frames to avoid the cracking issue. The first frame was this video obviously and it took me like 90 hours with some assistance here and there. The next ones I picked up speed, but not sure what my actual time was. The last one that I’d done was both left and right side rails, 2 crossmembers, brackets, and all of the trunnion except for the lower plate on one side. That was crazy. Everyone going through the shop looked stressed out with all of the lines all over the place. It literally looked like the truck was a pile of parts. That job paid 200 hours, but like I’d said, I don’t know for sure how long it took.
