      A visual will probably help better. If you have less time on your 14 hour clock than you 11 hour drive clock, check the Will Pair SB/Split Berth box, then go back and see how much 14 hour clock you get back. Just remember that you have to have AT LEAST 2 hours of Off Duty, or you cannot use the Off Duty time. For instance, 1 hour 59 seconds is not enough time, because it’s less that 2 hours. Then, once you get 2 hours of Off Duty time, you ONLY have to be in Sleeper Berth for 8 hours to reset your 14 hour clock.

    🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
    00:00 *🕰️ Understanding the split sleeper provision*
    - Split sleeper berth periods divide on-duty and driving time
    - The provision helps to establish safer driving habits and offers flexibility in scheduling
    - Examples breakdown the split sleeper schedule into manageable portions
    01:14 *🛌 Split sleeper schedule explanation*
    - Short breaks can be in sleeper berth or off-duty status, but long breaks are only in sleeper berth
    - Example scenarios of using 7-3 split sleeper schedule effectively
    - Transitioning between different split times like 8-2 to 7-3 or vice versa requires specific time intervals
    04:00 *📅 Compliance and tracking*
    - Awareness of on-duty hours within a 7-8 consecutive day period is crucial
    - Restarting a new consecutive day period requires taking 34 or more consecutive hours off duty
    - Miscalculations can lead to violations of hours of service rules, so tracking remaining hours is essential.

    Hi,
    I know how to use the split sleeper berth 2-8, but can it be done the other way around after running out of HOS?
    Say that I already drove 11 hrs and usually for me to get another 11 hrs of dive time, I need to be off 10 hrs, but if I only get into sleeper berth for 8 hrs, will I get any driving hours back? And after driving, let's say 4 hrs, I get into the sleeper berth for 2 hrs. Does that work?

    She is talking too fast but you can adjust the playback to .75. The company I work for recommends that when taking a 30 min break to make it 35 because that clocks are not matching up for some reason. And that gets a lot of drivers into trouble. And another thing, those of you that have to work with tablets (company iPad/ or phone to log your driving status). See if you can find a tile on the home screen that is titled "Library". Once you click that the "everything ELD" tab contains a booklet that explains the whole tablet. It's also called "Roadside Inspection Book", that's the book the officers wanna see....

      I'm not an expert at this, but I now feel comfortable enough with the subject to lend commentary and say with some certainty that the 30-minute break cannot be broken up. It has to be 30 consecutive minutes. But what seems apparent here in the video is that you can insert your 30-minute break into one of your "on-duty, not driving" or "off-duty" segments and still be legal.

    • @micheledardis8194
      @micheledardis8194 2 года назад +1

      I am an application support tech for a company, I am still new to this field, so I tell my callers to please take 35 minutes instead. When they take 30 min it always gets them in trouble because the clock of the tablet/phone/ what ever they have in the truck didn't register correctly (our does not know why). So more often then not they get a violation because even though the driver sits there with a stop watch going by the tablets time and what it says, and hitting it at 30 min. The system counts in milli seconds so if you are ( .45) milli seconds short of 30 minutes your toast.....

    • @vendingdudes
      @vendingdudes 2 года назад +1

      Yes. You could take multiple tiny breaks and it doesn't screw up your 2 or 3 hour break. Remember the phrase "qualifying period" that the official rule uses. In other words, if you've taken a "qualifying break" of at least 2 hours (sleeper or off duty) then any "mini" stoppages don't override that or make it go away.

      Yes, your 14 hour window is extended automatically after the break counts to two hours and keeps extending as your break keeps extending, BUT the software has no idea if in the future you're going to "finish" the split by doing the longer sleeper only portion. Soooo, DEFAULT clock will show you in violation after 14 hours, but when you toggle SHOW SPLIT it will change the clocks to show you you've successfully stretched your day for the moment BUT the word VIOLATION still shows on the screen (until the second qualifying period is achieved, thus finishing the split sleeper time)

  • @user-vb6kk5yx8s

    The easiest way to understand this is watch your 11 hr clock if u driver 5 hrs and do a split u have 6 hrs left to drive whether u do 8/2 or 7/3 split. All you do with a split is use the remaining time from your 11 hr clock then shut down with the second part of your split break. When you finish your split break you will have completed your entire 10hr break and the clock resets. Its not really that complicated.

    • @switchboard
      @switchboard  2 года назад

      Hi Jay, the split is to allow yourself to take less than 10 hours consecutive sleep time, which may work better with your schedule!
      In your example, the moment you finish your 8 hours of sleep, you will have **4 hours of drive time left**, because your time will restart to the end of your initial 2 hour break.

    Here’s a question. I understand the whole split rule, but I’m confused about consecutive days using it. I know that it doesn’t matter if you take the long, or short break first. But what about the next day? Example, I did the 7 hours first today, later today I’ll do my 3. After I do the 3 hour break, and get back my hours, does it still not matter which break I take first? Like can I do 7/3 then 3/7? Or do I need to do 7/3 7/3. Someone please answer this

    • @switchboard
      @switchboard  2 года назад

      Hi R H, when considering the Split Sleeper rule, it can be confusing because there's no hard reset, but your "window" of 10 hours keeps shifting forward for each break that you take.
      If you did 7 hours as a break, then 3 later, then you would start with the amount of hours that you had remaining **at the end of your first 7 hour break**.
      Later, the moment you take another 3 hour break, you would have the hours that you had **at the end of your 3 hour break**.
      We have more examples here if you need more info:

  • @alexdetagxi8148
    @alexdetagxi8148 2 года назад

    Over all split 7+3 or 3+7 this just means if you take 3hours of off duty/sleeper rest time the hours you used 5hrs driving and 1hr = 6 hrs of work time on duty will be NEGATED, DELETED, by having a rest period of 3hrs or (seven sleeper)in this video that ends in point A then start a new 8 hours of work time 6hrs plus 2 Do not watch this if you are looking at it first time.

    After I take my 3 hours of duty , instead of 7 hours sleeper berth can I do 10 hours to regain full 14 hours? Let's say after 10 hours of duty I have an appointment at 6 am where I am very close to receiver with only 15 minutes of driving and 45 minutes in on duty. but it takes 4 hous to unload which I spent in sleeper berth which gives me my hours back with this rule. After driving 10 hours if I stop for 7 hours it only gonna give me 15 minutes for driving so instead of 7 can I do 10 hours to get back my 14

    • @GrizzlyOldFart
      @GrizzlyOldFart 3 года назад

      You can take 10 anytime to get a full 14/11 back.

  • @officialtrucking8257
    @officialtrucking8257 2 года назад +2

    Split sleeper must be done during the 24 hour period. You can have only one 8/7 hour long break during 24hr time.
    If you did 8 hours sleeper last night and did 2 hours more after midnight your 10 hour is complete.
    To make it simple
    You are allowed only one long rest break and unlimited short breaks.
    Take 7/8 long break at 1:00am and after that you can take unlimited 2/3 hour breaks until the next 1:00am.

    • @ShoneBrate
      @ShoneBrate 2 года назад

      Are you 100% sure about that first sentence sir? It is logical to me also that 24h period suppose to contain all the drive, on duty, off duty and both required chunks for sleeper berth inside that 24h.
      But i got a situation where my ELD is telling me that it was be done in like 26h period. Example is if you actually do 6:30min sleeper, it is gonna consider it as first required period of 3/8 split, but it will actually prolong shift time (in that moment when you finish 6h30min sleeper) for whole amount of 6h30.

      You can continue the 8-2 3-7 over and over as long as you are within DOT/fmcsa HOS. Just gotta figure it out when to apply this; depending on your to-from-next location of pickup/delivery.

      The only way to reset and get your FULL 14 hour clock back, is to take a full consecutive 10 hour sleeper birth/off-duty, to fully restart your 14 hour clock.

You're gonna be burned out in no time especially if you do recap😂 I used it one time so far and this will only happen again if the shipper got me waiting 4 to 6 hours again and still after my 70h recap is up for that day I do my 10h. To my understanding. Only a long sleeper birth can stop your clock. Taking a 3hr break doesn’t save you from violation of the 14hr rule.

    • @AT-ov1sl
      @AT-ov1sl Год назад

      Yes, that is correct! That 3 hour sleeper birth or off-duty break, keeps on ticking. The 7 hour sleeper birth will stop your 14 hour clock.

    • @dand4495
      @dand4495 2 месяца назад

      that is not correct. You can take 2 or 3 hours off (or sleeper berth), and that effectively extends your day, by a maximum of 3 hours. The reason is because you are "acting" like you are taking the first half of a 2-8 or 3-7 split.. then, when you end up taking your 10, it will have covered the 7 or the 8, therefore "justifying" the earlier break. So in this sense, you are kinda gaming the system.. which is good of course. I do it all the time, like one third of all my days. Just gotta make sure your ELD is toggled/set/checked properly, and every day you can extend to 16 or 17 hours, regardless on whether you actually plan on pairing with the second half of a 2-8 or 3-7. Hope this helps.
