    Gorgeous colour. I'm glad to see Nikon have maintained their look. That separation for this 35mm is crazy good. I'm normally a 50mm kind of guy but damn this is nice.
    There was a time where I felt Nikon would fade away so it's great to see them come back strong.

    Wow! Julia you got this lens early! It looks amazing!!!! I just got the Nikkor 35mm 1.4 Z. So far, I love it! Full of character at 1.4 with vintage vibes and very sharp when stopped down. I’m loving it. Flawed but fabulous and I’m glad I got it over the more clinical 1.8. I can’t wait to see you compare this lens to the other Nikon 35’s! I notice you used your disposable film pack on your review of the Nikkor 1.4 as well! Is that your go to for 35? Ha!! I’ll have to try some of your presents they are gorgeous!
    Keep up the great work and keep these Nikon videos coming. Nikon is crushing it. Glad to see them getting their game back!

      I'm still waiting to get my hands on the 1.4 for a proper test drive, I only had it for a few minutes and didn't have a chance to shoot in natural light with it but it looks very promising. Also, I need to add that however the 1.8 S-line lenses are great, the 35mm is the weakest of them by far.

    • @babyboy1971
      @babyboy1971 5 дней назад

      @ that’s interesting. Are you saying the 35 1.8 is then weakest S line? I’d heard that and that was part of the reason I got the 1.4.

    • @Timeless_gw
      @Timeless_gw 2 дня назад

      @@babyboy1971 Out of the NIKKOR Z f/1.8 S primes; the 24mm is the weakest shot wide open, then the 35mm next. Nonetheless, it’s still sharp and when stopped down to f/2.8 it becomes incredibly sharp.
      Not to mention all of that is irrelevant in most real world applications when you aren’t pixel peeping

    Thank You Yulia! It's pleasure to see your lens reviews. I use this ring for exposure control. It's rather convenient. If I accidentally touch it, it will be visible on the screen. • @stefan_becker
    @stefan_becker 5 дней назад +2

    The 35mm f1.2 seems to be an incredible lens. But yes, I have an A7rV and a Z8 (and the 50mm f1.2 S as well as the 85mm f1.2 S). For me it's obvious that the autofocus of the Sony A7rV for portrait photography is superior. I usually have 100% critically sharp images with the Sony even at 50mm f1.2 (Sony 50mm f1.2 GM) or 85mm f1.4 (Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN). Unfortunately I cannot say this about the Z8. Usually I have around 10% pictures that are slightly out of focus or have focus on the wrong (further away) eye even when using tracking (which improves the af of the Z8 considerably). On the other hand I can hold my A7rV somehow in the direction of my model, press the shutter button and get 100% critically sharp images. Also the sensor stabilization of the A7rV is in my opinion clearly superior, which also increases the the "keeper" rate of the A7rV considerably. I have not decided yet, but maybe I'll sell all my Nikon gear and switch back completely to Sony again. It's a pity because I like the ergonomics of the Z8 and don't need a zillion pictures per second, but I need reliable autofocus.

    • @livejames9374
      @livejames9374 5 дней назад

      It’s funny for anything moving (think sports, birds) the Z8 is much more reliable with AF. Static portraits the A7R5 is about as accurate as it gets.

  • @JosefFoti
    @JosefFoti 5 дней назад +3

    You just reminded me of how much I love the neutral Nikon colours! But the design is very similar to the 50 mm f/1.2 (they only took away that stupid display). When I tested the 50, I had a big issue with the programmable aperture ring and in the end I turned it off. With the current optical performance of lenses we have for pretty much all camera brands, I think it comes down to personal preference. The size and weight definitely don't make it for me. I could only see myself use it during a one hour portrait or family session but definitely not at a wedding or event. Also, in terms of design end ergonomics, there is nothing like Sony GM lenses for me, I just love the clickable/declickable aperture ring and in general Sony's tendency to make the lenses as small and lightweight as possible. But that's just me, the good thing is that there are so many lenses around that everyone can pick what fits them best 🙂

    • @NickErickson
      @NickErickson 5 дней назад +2

      I love the Nikon colors too, so much so that I recently sold my Fuji X-S20 for a Zf.

    • @adamaufdencamp5080
      @adamaufdencamp5080 5 дней назад +1

      The weight and size is a real thing. I own the Z Mount 50mm f/1.2 and recently bought the 50mm f/1.8 because I just couldn’t bring myself to carry the 1.2 all the times I wanted a fast 50.
      I’m baffled by Nikon’s logic on locking of control features. I’ve disabled the extra ring on the 1.2. And don’t understand why, as an example, the exposure compensation dial on my Zf doesn’t lock. Pulling a body in or out of a bag is always going to result in a percentage of mistaken control settings when they don’t lock.
      Will I buy the 35mm f/1.2 and regret the size and weight? Probably. The optical quality is just too tempting. The siren song of a crazy fast aperture will be the death of my wrists.

    • @Ben_Stewart

      Problem with Sony now is that their E-Mount is the smallest of the 3. Which means more in camera corrections with wide apertures.

    • @JosefFoti
      @JosefFoti 4 дня назад

      @@Ben_Stewart That's true but as far as I know they already take it into consideration when constructing the lenses and the focal length is after the correction. At least that's what I've heard.

  • @tasercs
    @tasercs 4 дня назад

    The lens does look very compelling. Couldn't agree more about the 'easy to knock' aperture ring.
    I've only just got out of debt from my Z8... this lens is a real 'pro only' price though sadly 😯
    I was just thinking that about 99% of the photographers watching this will probably never get a chance to work with a model like this (is it Devon?). A model who moves instinctively to a new and different pose after each shot, offering loads of options to the photographer - with all but minimal prompting. Most of us can only dream of that. We are more used to a shy, awkward 'friend' that doesn't really like having their pic taken and just stands there and waits for direction... which ads massively to the workload and never gives results anywhere near your pics from this shoot.

    Thanks, great review, as always! You really have an eye for colours and geometry. It's nice to see a focus on environmental portraits, too, instead of abstract charts. What a nice lens, overall. I have the same gripe about the eye AF; I really wish Nikon made it a little more robust when the subject is not facing the camera in ideal conditions. So frustrating, sometimes! And I'm always turning the custom ring off, too. As you said, it's too sensitive, and for me it's also too close to the mount, so that's where I like to support the lens when I take a shot. It should ideally be a little stiffer and further away, like at the extremity. Since it's not on all lenses, I prefer to keep the same setting system for all of them anyway, so I wouldn't use it for aperture / shutter speed / ISO.

    Right from the bat, I don't understand why not using the VF if you're holding the camera so close in front of you. It's harder for your arms, it's less stable, it strains your eyes to look so close at a screen. Only downsides. I could onderstand popping out the screen if you're doing a difficult angle or want a shot from a lower angle, but not when you hover the camera in front of your face, close to your nose. It almost looks like you don't know you have a VF with a much clearer screen, without reflections.

    Pupil focus - as you use "recognition AI AF" (rightfully so), have you tried 3D tracking override? Also, when the pupil becomes hard to distinguish, consider that you register too much of the sitter's eye-white. To me that looks weird, so i profile shots, I tend to ask the sitter to not move their head but their eyes more towards the camera so I get less white area. Maybe in these cases, the camera has an easier job to recognise pupils?

      When you're shooting at f1.2 you're letting a lot of light in. So to even out the brightness of the photo on a bright day you might have to increase your shutter speed to bring the image down to a proper exposure.

      @ yes of course! Idk why but I was actually hung up on motion blur for some reason.

      @@aclao No worries. The exposure triangle and how each setting affects the image can take some time to get down.

    3:43 I wonder if that focussing problem is a problem of the camera and not the lens. I shoot with a Nikon Z7 II (I have two of them actually, and both have that problem) and the focus accuracy is not the best when it comes to focussing on the iris.

    Non è corretto dire che il problema dell'iride fuori fuoco è un problema legato all'autofocus della fotocamera, perché questo obiettivo si comporta con un tele, quando lo si usa a tutta apertura e cosi, quando si usa qualsiasi tele, la messa a fuoco automatica è sempre molto insidiosa perché la distanza di messa a fuoco si riduce tantissimo

    Who's gonna carry this shit lol wasn't the larger Z mount supposed to offer more compact lenses lol what happened to that talking point against the older E-mount? lol

    • @livejames9374
      @livejames9374 5 дней назад +1

      That was never a talking point. Only Sony talked about mirrorless = smaller, which is why it took them 10 years to finally release a camera large enough where your knuckles don’t rub on lens.

    I don't get the point of a 1.2 aperture on a 35mm lens. You don't need the bokeh for portraits because the whole point to using a 35mm lens in portraits if you do so is to include the background, not to blur it. You wouldn't get in close for compression because of the distortion. It's too heavy & bulky for a run & gun street photography role, & as a landscape lens...it's not worth an extra $2K over the NIkkor 35mm f/1.8. Weddings? Naw...group shots don't need that kind of bokeh either. I suppose astro-photography might be a usage but I'd much rather have the much wider 20mm f.8 or even the 14-24mm f/2.8. The 85mm f/1.2 is the only true portrait lens with that aperture & it makes a lot of sense for head shots. Paying the same price for this would not interest me. I would much rather get a 135mm Plenna for that kind of money.

    as long as it fits in a telephoto body, it doesn't make any sense to use it
