I’m glad Nikon took their time and released this lens until it was ready. Bravo
I LOVE your restaurant shots, especially the B&W. Great shots.
Nikon really killed it with the Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.2 S and to complete the Trinity f/1.2 S lineup.
Since a 135/1.2 would be completely impractical, does the Plena make it a Quaternity?
“really killed it”….yeah sure, the biceps. 😂
The Nikon Z f/1.2s and the Plena are expensive, but they are just in another league.
The Nikon league? If you look at other mounts and 3rd party too, you have lenses that are as good or better, and for cheaper.
@@youuuuuuuuuuutube Hard to compare across different mounts, but at least for the 135 1.8, I'm pretty sure the Nikon is the best of the bunch. They even overbuilt it, to cast a larger than full frame image circle, to minimize vignette and keep the bokeh round, even on the edge of the frame.
That being said, I still decided to get the old F-Mount Sigma, you're getting like 90% of the IQ for less than half the price, I paid 950€ brand new, the Plena costs 2500€.
Vintage lenses are better not technically but aesthetically and they cost about 100
@@cy9nvsI’d probably give that to Canon as the best of the bunch for 135 1.8’s with their RF 135mm f1.8 L IS USM. It’s ridiculous sharp (almost a little too sharp for portraits in some cases) and the lens IS is rock solid. Actually insane how rock solid stable it is even for handheld video on a 135mm.
@gavthane I just realized Petapixel tested the 3 lenses side by side, and they also conclude that the Nikon lens comes out on top. Sharper in the corners than the Canon, round Bokeh even on the edge of the frame, and superior flare resistance when comparing to the Canon.
But again, it's all pretty close, and the Nikon is the most expensive.
Greetings from Japan! Go Eagles (at least this year)! Great review and the reason why I have watched this channel now for at least (5) years. I trust and value your reviews. BTW...shout out to whoever edits your videos! This episode had an especially nice look! Nice flow. Super clear, nice image displays and backgrounds. I've been waiting to add a 35mm to my recent camera switch to Nikon Z8 & ZF from Fujifilm GFX and XH2. Really been happy with Nikon. You've sold me on the F1.2 for sure. Thanks for the review. Next week I hope to visit the new Nikon HQ's to see the historical progression of equipment. Thanks again!
I’m in Japan too any places you know to watch the game this Monday 😂
Finally I can complete the holy trinity of: 35/1.2 + 50/1.2 + 85/1.2 -> thank you Nikon !
I have the 50 & 85 f1.2 lenses and they are fantastic!
Which Nikon camera body do you use?
@@dynamicvibe4248 I have a Z7 and Z9 for most of my work and a Z30 for a walk around street camera.
Yep, 50mm 1.2 is my fav lens by far and my work horse. I do really like my 135mm though.
Seeing this trinity of 1.2 lenses make me grateful to be a nature photog.
The 1.2’s would be like the 400 2.8/600 4 for wildlife lenses. More light, more weight, more $.
You must be one of the first to get your hands on this! Great review, FroPack 4 purchased! 🙏
While I shoot professionally with Nikon, I probably don't need this lens for the product photography that is my bread and butter. However, I'm buying it anyway because I enjoyed shooting with the Sigma 35mm f1.2 so much! The shots this focal length and aperture can achieve are just magical, and I love doing environmental portraiture of people, animals, and natural objects. It will be extremely useful for astrophotography timelapses, and for video work.
I use the 50mm f1.2 S frequently. Everything about the image quality is outstanding, and the autofocus/usability is great. I rarely pick up the 50mm f1.8 anymore for general photography, even though it's excellent. I think you'll be very happy with the 35.
This is the dream lens!
The 1.2/1.4/1.8 test is a bit disingenuous...a better test would be a shot wide open from the 3 respective 35mm lenses, not 3 stops from the best lens. There you will notice immediately how the 35/1.4 lens rendering falls apart, and how good the 35/1.8 rendering is.
please go for it, I didn't have the freedom to do that test.
มันคงคิดว่าคนดูจะโง่
I can see your photographic eye is growing and changing. ❤
The one lens I was waiting for.
Me too but 4k CAD is an ouche
Haven't been here for long time, I am here because of this lens!
Interesting approach that Nikon took with the f1.2 primes. As a Canon shooter I do own the RF 85 mm f1.2 lens, but for other primes I went with the RF Z f1.4s and own the 24, 35, and 50 mm f1.5 Z primes. Frankly, I really like the Canon RF Z f1.4 primes for their small size and lightweight; they are easier to transport and use when traveling.
No doubt an RF 35mm f/1.2 L VCM is coming (I’d be surprised if they used Nano USM only). Nikon having this basically makes it a question of if, not when - so thanks Nikon haha
Like you I much prefer the smaller and lighter f1.4's. The thought of a 35 that's the same weight of my 70-200 (Sony) , that's not for me. I was so pleased when Sonys new 85 was f1.4 not 1.2. I do however appreciate people who do not care about size and weight and love a f1.2
I'm wondering whether to stick with the RF 1.4 as my next lens or go with the rumored Viltrox RF 1.2 or a possible Canon 1.2. The things I shoot at 35 include a lot of foreshortening - lots of high and low angles - meaning I need to carry the lens. A lighter weight might be the difference between getting the shot and not getting the shot, and that matters more than any lens or camera spec could ever.
@@defge_cd vapor lenses don't shoot pictures. Stick to what actually exists
@@walawala-fo7ds Fair, but I’m getting it next year once I save up for it - not now. CIPA 25 and 26 will pass by in the meantime.
Monster of a lens! Just amazing! Well done Nikon!
I can't explain why, but I really love the look of the black & white images. Thanks, Jared!
I have been waiting for this!!!!!
It is so cool and interesting to see how you are framing. Thank you for sharing the video of your shooting. Very helpful.
For everybody else - just wait for the upcoming Viltrox 35mm F1.2 LAB series lens.
Did Jared figure out the Nikon autofocus yet?
Well, seeing he has used wide-area AF in most of his shots here, one would think yes. Jared knows these things very well, coming from older Nikon DSLR’s, there’s a lot of similarity between them and the Z-system.
@@Ben_Stewart yes it’s called single point autofocus, the only decent autofocus system Nikon has.
@@bsc001 Jared is a professional shooter unlike you. Accept the facts Nikon fanboy.
@@alphaandomega2709 Been using the soybean Sony for too long.
@@alphaandomega2709 Don't worry. Maybe your Sony or Canon will come out with a 35mm f/1.2
Drool, I want this, yes please.
Great review Jared. Really appreciate the comparison of the different lenses!
Great shots, Jared. It's on the list. Pricey!
I used to be into lenses like this, and bravo for Nikon releasing it. Nowadays the Sony 1.4 GM with its compact size/weight is on the money for me. I reckon if you took environmental portraits with the Canon and Sony 1.4's vs the Nikon 1.2 and showed people, I bet they couldn't tell the difference unless pointed out like you have done and even then they would say, really.
You’d have same response with 1.8 lenses.
Canon sold a lot of 1.2 lenses where you couldn't tell the difference. Photographers bought them anyway. Halo products are like this.
Sony's 1.4 gm lenses are so nice because of their size. 1.2 is not necessary.
@@kifley19 Completely agree.
@kifley19 1.2 is indeed not necessary, but it is better than 1.4 😜 any 1.2 lens can shoot at 1.4, but the reverse isn't possible. That's why they sell.
11:46 I need so the difference and I was spot on
It's subtle but it exists, and on a big screen you feel less destructive, and tomorrow smooth background.
And as a filmmaker I am 100% sure that in a different situation especially more close up it will be much more clear and important
Nikon having various flavors for your choosing: 1.8 S or 1.4 or 1.2 S
5.9” is huge. It’s very long. I’ve been told 5.9” ginormous and that any longer is too long and that there is nothing to be ashamed of.
1.8 seems to be more interesting in size and price, I don't see any difference in picture quality. But I am glad for my lovely brand for this update.
Thank you for the review. I've been a Nikon shooter since 84. dabbled with Mirrorless to check the waters with Z30. will make the plunge into Z full frame soon and shift from DSLR to Mirrorless full time. The latest Z8, ZF and Z6iii look like they are ready for prime time now to part with hobby money. The lenses are filled out to mostly what I would want. I honestly love using my vintage MF lenses or recreations of MF lenses, but my work is hobby work and no time crunch like someone who is working for someone who needs to get the shot now and no second chance. But yes, these new lenses seem to be hitting the mark with everyone. I might have to go out and get a used Z7 for landscapes. Killer deals on used market now that that the Z8 and Z6iii have been out for a while. If I was earning money? Z8 or Z6iii for sure. hmm ZF in Blue or red. decisions decisions.
Personally I don’t like the distortion of a 35mm when you make face only portraits from your subject. But I agree what you said about in scene shootings.
It's the new 'mouse' look.
Beautiful portraits, wow!
Now I am waiting for Nikon Z7 III. That will be hell of a combo!
Nikon has the world's largest selection of first party 1.2 lenses and the only first party manufacturer of an f/0.95 lens. So it only natural that next is 24mm f/1.2 to continue dominance of the fast prime catalog
Its insane that people still shed tears over Canon releasing a 35mm 1.4 and not a 1.2. It’s literally a third of a stop difference and the visual difference between f1.2 and f1.4 is so minor… but the size, weight and price difference is massive. Just look at the Canon f1.2 and f1.4… I’d take the 1.4 any day.
Your comment is a fair one. Every one of the big 3 have a great eco-system, use whatever is available in it for your individual use-case. 1.4 is definitely bloody good, and like you say, if you need to do air-travel, it is much easier to pack.
I do own the 50 1.2, 85 1.2, as well as the Plena 135, and will get this one as soon as the price drops in Australia. But for sure, they are big lenses, especially the 85 1.2, which is a chunky one.
Thank you so much for this nice review about amazing lens I was waiting for it long time,I have 35mm f1.4 it’s really amazing and I am sure this one will be much better specially in low light situations 🤗
So did Nikon take the Sigma Art 1.2 F mount lens series, change the mount and the name?
Great Review Jared, Thank you 😀
Love it. I just ordered it.
Nice review, but I am surprised you said "we do not use manual focus with at f/1.2". For me, it is with fast lenses where manual is most important. The huge advantage of mirrorless vs SLR is not only back/front focus that you mention, but it is the viewfinder zoom-to-focus. I don't have a Nikon camera (sadly), but if I recall correctly, Nikon has a unique feature that places the zoom-to-focus location automatically on the eye when manually focusing. This unique feature makes Nikon the most optimized of all cameras for manual focusing, which is a good thing because it looks like the eye autofocus needs a software update. All the best.
PS, It would have been nice to see a critical comparison between the non-S 35 mm f/1.4 and the S-series 35 mm f/1.2. I can only assume there is a huge quality difference even at f\1.4 based on the massive size/weight difference between the two lenses and the difference in "S-series" classification. Perhaps you can do this in a future video.
Beautiful images Jared, love the B/W images. I’m happy the lens is finally out, since I spread the rumor at least two years ago to Nikon rumors after hearing it from a Nikon representative . I have the 50 mm 1,2 which is my favorite lens, and I’m afraid after my supplier in Denmark called me today that it´s what I need to get one, especially after Jareds review.
Don't you just love 35mm as a portrait lens? amazing focal length
Finally a "Review" from Mr Subaru!
No more "pReview" with a false promised actual Review that never happens. Want me to list them? 😅
How about you make your own reviews?
Ya i'm surprised we haven't heard a 28-70 f/2 Nikon rumor, but 35/1.2 looks like a dream lens though!
28-70 F2.0 may sound useful, I just don't see any major difference between the F2.8 24-70, while this 35mm F1.2 is very remarkable. I'd gladly add this lens for special shots and keep the F2.8 zoom.
great review an outstanding images 👍🏻
The pictures from the restaurant are great, thanks to the review ;)
I wish they made 1.4 pro lenses, that's the sweet spot. 1.2 is too big and expensive, 1.8 is slow and soft wide open, 1.4 is soft, slow and image rendition issues 😅
The 35 1.8 being the first FX z-lens, if memory serves, is probably the worst of their f/1.8’s. Both the 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 are superb lenses ;) But then again, I am sure you guys have already tried them, haha.
I had the z 35mm 1.8 and now own the z 50 mm 1.8 and personally I don't find them soft at 1.8. But I guess everybody has a different perception.
Gold (or red) or whatever color you want rings can be applied pretty easily with automotive pinstriping tape. I "red ringed" a plastic fantastic Canon EF 50mm f1.8 one time, stuck an aftermarket pedal hood on it and told people in my camera club it was a new L lens available only to select canon shooters and they went nuts.
Looks like a fantastic lens, and even better for those people who are really good at lighting.
It was worth changing the lens to 35/1.8 for an example. The bokeh on frames from 35/1.8 to f1.8 would be much less beautiful than on frames from 35/1.2 to f1.8.
Amazing the difference in size from f1.4 to f1.2. For me as I'm often shooting all day I prefer the much, much lighter F1.4s for 35 50 and 85. It's great Nikon have all three, just a shame the f1.4 is not an S.
the 1.4 primes from nikon should have been better than the 1.8 primes. makes no sense.
Fantastic lens, makes every picture a story. Especially the BW ones they are exceptional.. cinematographers(budget) are going to be quite happy to have holy Trinity of 1.2!!!
Nikon is killing it.. amazing lens..❤🎉Bravo..
Even though I would never buy this lens because of the price, I really loved your review.
Great review 🎉😊
Are you switching back to Nikon now that they have the Hebrew Trinity of prime lenses?
Fro would never do that. You can't get anything but blurry photos with a Nikon since it can't accurately auto-focus 😂

I'll take a 1.4 over a 1.2 all day long. It's smaller and lighter and cheaper. And even side by side it's very difficult to see any diff between 1.2 and 1.4.
Still hoping Nikon still comes out with a 28-70 f2 in the near future
Lovely images Jared!

Awesome lens and ur review❤
Thanx for your insights, Jared. I will let the dust settle on this one, and grab it closer to the end of the year, when the price should drop a fair bit here in AU. My quarternity is almost complete.
Btw, how do you like the contrast on this? It seems you might have added a bit to spice up the BW shots, yeah? But still bloody impressive. Appreciate your feedback.
The price will not drop
@@froknowsphoto All Nikon lenses are overpriced in AUD, Jared, and price comes down a lot after some months.
Price might not drop in USD, in Australia though, it always does drop in AUD. It was the same with the 50 1.2, 85 1.2, and 135 1.8
WOW 1.2s look amazing . i feel like 1.4s are not really worth it if you have 1.8 . ..
You are too kind about the Z9 eye tracking. Gotta look at that 35 1.2 later.
I've been using the sigma 35 1.2 dgdn for a while now. I guess there's a new sheriff in town.
@11:50 The answer absolutely lies in the left bokeh ball on the left side of the image, also the light fixture. The light fixture detail is blown out in the middle, with stronger cats eye bokeh ball. The right side image is just starting to get the light fixture detail and the cats eye ball is starting to soften the pointy ends. The left side image has started correcting the cats eye bokeh ball to be round and the light fixture is starting to show the vertical lines in it.
Just like with super telephoto lenses, at these price points, you are paying equally for the sharpness of the in focus subject just as much as the ability to have extremely smooth bokeh.
Dear Jared, do you think canon will ever release rf 35 1.2? im not happy with the reivews reagrding the latest 1.4
Great video! Thank you for the 1.2 vs 1.4 vs 1.8 comparison
What a lens 🤩
Curious if the comparisons of the different apertures were with the 1.2S just stopped down or if it was the 1.2S vs 1.4 vs 1.8S?
He said it was the 35 1.2 @ 1.4 and 1.8
@@livejames9374 Thanks...missed that!
Kudos to Nikon. Beautiful rendering. It even looks great stoped down which is important for event photos with multiple subjects. Expensive but if I were a Nikon user I’d have to consider.
11:45 i could 100 percent tell the difference and was spot on

Me too, the bokeh absolutely is the dead give away!
looking awesome!
11:48
Honestly, 1.8 looks better in every aspect - better contrast, less blurry button and neck, better brightness, better colors. Okay, brightness and contract could probably be compensated with smaller ISO and faster exposure, but not the blur.
Pre production copies on RUclips are a poor reference. Let's wait for the proper pixel peeper labs
Gold ring is an add-on as the additional filter lens.
What AF settings are you using in the video? Thanks.
Ha, the 1-2 punch. I caught that. Nikon lenses and sensors seem to be amazing, but man, the autofocus just so far behind that it makes it impossible to decide between them and Canon.
Heya Jared. How much of a jump is this from the nikon 35mm f/1.4G quality wise? (F mount). It's my favorite focal length in a prime for daily shooting, but 2800 is quite a jump in price. Thanks for the review brother, have a good one!
have the 50 1.2 and 135mm. Have to sell one now.
Dang, the Fro made a review, and already left a scratch on the lens hood. 🙂
the 85 1.2 is the most beautiful lens I ever used I will buy also this 35
Basically Nikon has the best lenses in the industry
I’d love to get one to test it against sigmas Art 1.2 F mount lens series (with an F-Z adapter for course)
There is no Sigma 35 1.2 for f mount
Great video as always
I don't care that much about new gear and all those fancy stuff, but i gotta admit those B&W kitchen photos are great 🤔
Thanks as usual for relevant and accurate information, a question regarding printing, how significant is it with the focus on the eyelashes instead of the pupil?
The 35 really pairs well with 85. However, that 135 Plena is legendary. I own 50 f1.2 and that's my next lens. Another reason I choose 50mm is to be used with anamorphic adapter for video. Minimum 50mm is needed to prevent vignetting with adapter.
Which adapter do you use with the 50 mm 1,2 to get an anamorphic look ?
@@martindyrlvmadsen9791 Laowa 1.5x adapter works great for me. There's a video from The Film Guy comparing a number of adapters. I saw Laowa and Sirui outperform expensive adapters. I decided to got for that. Also consider getting H&Y Revoring for quick lenses swap with the adapter.

lets wait for 105mm F/1.4 S on Z mount...
I wish nikon makes 1.4 S line lenses. Theyy are a perfect balance of weight quality charecter n price. They are much needed for hybrid shooters and event shooters and video shooters. Sony n Canon nailing 1.4 as per market requirement
they are developing cine lenses for their Red cameras. they already said so
Nikon dropped the ball with their trash 1.4 primes. How can their 1.4 primes be worse than their 1.8 primes.
@kifley19 Rather obvious unless you know nothing of the lens designation. Those lenses are not s-line which is the equivalent L or GM like this one is. All the non S line is aimed at the budget market. Basic knowledge.
Jared do more beginner camera photoshoot those 5 min portrait i love does
Well, maybe this will finally motivate Canon to release their 35mm F/1.2L.
