What OM-S have done is tried to merge the Pen-F into the OM-1/2, which I can understand as a small company with limited funds compared to what Olympus may or may not had in the past, but has this compromise really worked? I think instead OM-S are trying to appeal to everyone and I'm not too sure I'm that convinced. The only reason I, and I imagine many others may not switch to another system, is because of the vast collection of excellent lenses Olympus produced and that we have amassed. That said, today I rarely venture out with my E-M1's unless doing commercial work. Instead I take a 13 year old Ricoh GR out instead with its fixed 28mm equivalent lens. That's really what I wanted. I still don't get why Olympus/OM System put their on/off switches onto the left side. This makes operating the camera one handed and turning it on quickly much more difficult. When having a hand strap on my Fuji I know that I just need my index finger to quickly flip the switch and it's ready to go.

At least it's weather sealed, which is the only reason I didn't get the pen-f. But it absolutely should have had the best evf panel available.. and the left dial should have been iso
Fuji xt50 is $1399. The Nikon zf is $1800. This is just a huge price miss my OM. It's probably a lovely camera to shoot but this isnt gaining new fans to the system. OM needs new audience and this isnt convincing.
Nice camera, the graduated ND filter is a hell of an idea but the price point of 2000$ is stupid - there are way too many and better options out there and you could get a 45$ filter.

I sell my ZF and will get this om-3 as my every day camera . because the lens on m4/3 was way smaller, But I still have full set nikon with my Z8 for my other works
Would have pre-ordered if it was rangefinder-styled, would have been even more keen if it had a tilt screen rather than articulating. If it's photography first, lose the annoying clunky wing mirror. Oh well, back to waiting for an E-P8...
Pen series actually sells very well in Japan. I think Om System E-P is on the way now. but we probably need to wait for a while. the current ep7 only misses weather sealing and PDAF. For me, these are not problems at all.
It's probably very hard/impossible to make use of those computational modes in video since many of them make use of multiple (sometimes tens of) exposures.
Thanks, excellent video and the first I've seen on this camera. I was going to say "looks good", but you are correct that PASM dial is odd, looks like it's been borrowed from a Lego camera and I don't mind them, I have them on all three of my Fuji's (X-S20, X-M1, X30) but they still manage to look like Fuji's retro SS and ISO dials. I bailed on the X-M5 because of the flip screen but did love the OMD 10 IV, but that was X-M5 money. I think you are correct, £2k is too much and when they haven't gone 'full monty' on the retro styling. For that money I'd try the Nikon Zf first.
I'd have been interested in it if the EVF was better and it wasn't so roughly priced as someone who isn't in the m43 ecosystem.. But at 3.1k AUD I can get an A7iv, or A7Cii, or even jump ship to a ZF w/ $600 spare. oof.
I think the price is excessive, but 800 or 600 euros as some say, for a sealed body, with high resolution function, built-in ND filter and also stabilized, should cost much more than that. Maybe between 1400 or 1500 dollars would be more appropriate.
I just don't get why they went with a stacked sensor in _this_ type of camera. Take that out and the price goes down by 500 right away, at a minimum...
I'll die on the hill that the "OM System" brand just doesn't look as nice as "Olympus" and feels like some sort of weird third party knock-off. Everything else? Utterly beautiful. I just hate that name branding.
Sorry Tom, Fuji have nothing to worry about here, the Nikon ZF for LESS is much much better and FF. I'm waiting the much delayed AE1 D from Canon, that is your game changer - not a lower spec OM that just looks nice.
I like the articulating screen. You can waist level shoot in portrait mode. You can"t really do that with a flippy screen. It looks good anyway, all you need to do is stick on an Olympus sticker 😂.
Today cameras do not have 1 - 1/500s shutter in 1/2EV increments like 30 years ago. Two dials is the only intelligent option for thing that goes from B/60s up to 1/8000s.
One thing is, Olympus OM camera never really have a real shutter speed dial on top of the camera, they placed on a ring around the mount or even not existing at all and it has to be control on external dial on manual adapter like on OM-10 which is closely resemble enough to a modern front wheel. I think this design is already good in it's own right and not so far off to see it as a digital version of Olympus OM camera.
Only Fuji camera with IBIS and stacked CMOS is XH2s. Nikon Zf specs are far from this monster and ZFc which is closer to size and price does not have stacked sensor, IBIS and has low-end AF.
Wait. Is OM System actually Olympus? I thought Oly sold their camera division to another company who then relaunched it as OM System. EDIT: "...Mark Zuckerberg's conscience..." Hell yeah. You get points for calling that evil out. P.S. Great review.
Coming from a Fujifilm and Nikon ZF user, zero interest in this from any angle. Not appealing to look at and minimal weight saving to offset the IQ loss
More expensive than higher quality, FF, pro-grade ZF? Doesn't make sense, unless they are just charging premium from fanboys and later will tone down the price to compete with the market. I am not even mentioning zfc.
Damn, the 21:9 or whatever is distracting... it's a youtube review, not a Tarantino movie, man. I keep scrolling upwards in the hope to find more screen real estate 😝
Kind of a miss from OM System. The features and looks all look great, but with that price point, it's a hard sell when you can get an XT-5 or XM-5 or even the XT-50 for well below the Body only price and they all come with a great kit lens when optioned for it. Sure the materials are not the same, but they tick a lot of similar boxes for people looking for similar cameras.
Price is way too much for what it is. It looks awesome at a glance but when you get to look at it at more detail like you have described things seem to fall apart. I mean you want a retro tactile experience with the camera but have no physical shutter speed and ISO dial? The mode dial with its big "c" letters just scream modern snapshot mirrorless cam. Nikon's execution with Zf is way better and yes this should be aimed against the XM5. That's the audience you fight for.
Cue bitching about the grip. It's a lovely looking camera with great features. But I'd have expected it to be about $1,200 or so to compete. For me and I'm sure many others who like retro inspired cameras, it's not quite the same if it just looks the part and doesn't actually have the ability to be used as such - with a dedicated shutter-speed dial and lenses with aperture rings.
@ classic controls, simple menus, actual decent film sims, aps-c. Not weird unlabelled controls / dials that do multiple things, plus a bunch of tech that bloats a camera and takes away from a pure photography experience. I like the OM system but they’re not super comparable IMO
X-T5 is by far cheaper and well established...no threat to Fuji or any other brand at a $2000 price tag. With the same money you can even buy a second hand X100VI.
micro 4/3 for $2000????? and it’s not even smaller than any of the full frame or apsc cameras. feels like it’s competing with those old second hand $200 micro 4/3 pentax cameras
Fuji Killer?!? 😂😂😂 MFT is good for video, lousy at stills in low light and Olympus is the king of horrific menus... oh, and at a ridiculous price point...
It is weather sealed, which is the only reason I didn't get the pen-f. If camera is expensive i dont want random rain ruining it. As it is not a range finder style but SLR styled camera it means we are expected to use the viewfinder mainly. Thus it absolutely should have had the best evf panel available.. Also the left dial should have been iso, they wasted so much space. Front colour dial is ok, my pentax Qs are giggling at that. But an in box hand grip would be welcome like sony has for its a7cr/ii line.
What this camera is missing is the threaded hole on grip side to be able to install various custom grips like EPL line or XZ-2 do have. That would solve the ergonomy questions. Stacked sensor and hi-end AF makes turns this camera into some OM1 backup option. But for most people the OM-5 is better choice. Especially for those blind ones, who still compare this to Nikon ZFc and other poor lowends which lack IBIS and of course do not have comparable stacked sensor and AF. Not to mention Nikon APS-C lenses lineup which does not come remotely close to M4/3 portfolio.
why would anyone buy this over an Om5? if any camera is more apealling than the xm5 its the om5 already available at semi £700 used still has Pdaf... live nd... full weather sealing... 5 axis Ibis. external mic in.
Here's another thing: I wish "reviewers" were a bit more critical of the so called computational modes- like multiple shots- that's been around in other cameras like since forever. The color controls are all from the PenF / EP7. Quite literally- which they are good and I also like them, but it's not the first time we see them. And for hand hold. high res you have all the constraints that entails with movement, while other cameras simply don't need that (A7Cr, X-T50/X-T5) because they are already capturing in pretty high resolution. I do like that the camera does capture RAWS of all these though. You also get all the mutual exclusivities of all these modes, as you point out with Live ND./

It's probably very hard/impossible to make use of those computational modes in video since many of them make use of multiple (sometimes tens of) exposures.
How much for the grip you are going to want after using it for a couple of hours?
But at 3.1k AUD I can get an A7iv, or A7Cii, or even jump ship to a ZF w/ $600 spare. oof.
jeez the effing flipping screen!! why do they make those fugly hinges? there are so much more elegant ways... the front is absolute beauty.
they want to make it attractive to video creators as well. OM has very good video color profile.
Function over form.
Ugly compared to what? The tilt screens? The tilts are nowhere near as versatile and adds more to the overall rather than a single swivel
I would love this I was always a Fuji fan then tried some Olympus. Cameras just pricing is a bit steep
Whaaaaat 6"8 had no idea 😂
If it’s $800USD I would be interested, since I still have some m43 lens lying around.
You gained 1k subscribers by the time I watched this video 🎉🎉🎉
I'll die on the hill that the "OM System" brand just doesn't look as nice as "Olympus" and feels like some sort of weird third party knock-off.
Everything else? Utterly beautiful. I just hate that name branding.
Thanks for the video. This is interesting. I'm not too sure I like the effects burnt into the raw data.
At the price it ain’t threatening anything.
Sorry Tom, Fuji have nothing to worry about here, the Nikon ZF for LESS is much much better and FF. I'm waiting the much delayed AE1 D from Canon, that is your game changer - not a lower spec OM that just looks nice.
Since when nikon Zf has stacked sensor doing 120fps and 1053 pt AF system?
Apples and oranges. Not to mention whole ecosystem differences.
its for adventurers. point blank and simple. people who go to the himilayas and tredge through swamps. that weather proofing is the overlooked caviat.
US2000 for micro 4/3??!! Who would pay that?
Idiots who have nothing better to do with their money
Those who want stacked CMOS with 120fps, 1053pt AF and IBIS.
@@xmeda OK, Z6 III has partially stacked FF sensor for 2200 usd as of now. And that’s what we call a good deal. OM is just overpriced
@@xmedayeah, that's OM-1 works
I like the articulating screen. You can waist level shoot in portrait mode. You can"t really do that with a flippy screen. It looks good anyway, all you need to do is stick on an Olympus sticker 😂.
You can do that with the flippy screen on Fujis like on the X-T 3, X-T 5 and X-H 1. I think some Sonys also have a screen like that.
imagine if that camera uses analog-style shutter speed dials, as well as lenses with aperture rings
Today cameras do not have 1 - 1/500s shutter in 1/2EV increments like 30 years ago. Two dials is the only intelligent option for thing that goes from B/60s up to 1/8000s.
What a pleasant surprise
One thing is, Olympus OM camera never really have a real shutter speed dial on top of the camera, they placed on a ring around the mount or even not existing at all and it has to be control on external dial on manual adapter like on OM-10 which is closely resemble enough to a modern front wheel. I think this design is already good in it's own right and not so far off to see it as a digital version of Olympus OM camera.
My Olympus Zuiko FF lenses are disappointed.
Price aside, this camera offers a great combination of form and function. Especially if you have a few MFT lenses.
6:47 Uh huh. :)
Nikon Zf and Fujifilm X-T5 are cheaper if we talk retro-look:)
Only Fuji camera with IBIS and stacked CMOS is XH2s. Nikon Zf specs are far from this monster and ZFc which is closer to size and price does not have stacked sensor, IBIS and has low-end AF.
Not at this price, its very expensive £1700 for a body. It is better than the xm5 lens included, £900? Good video as usual.
Show me and XM5 with IBIS, stacked CMOS doing 120fps and 1053 point AF system..
With such an outdated low res EVF it is not threatening anything
This ain’t killing Fuji lol, it’s way overpriced for what it is.
6'8"?!
Tim Mountain
Damn, the 21:9 or whatever is distracting... it's a youtube review, not a Tarantino movie, man.
I keep scrolling upwards in the hope to find more screen real estate 😝
Sorry, for the trolling, but I left you a sub in exchange ;-)
Kind of a miss from OM System. The features and looks all look great, but with that price point, it's a hard sell when you can get an XT-5 or XM-5 or even the XT-50 for well below the Body only price and they all come with a great kit lens when optioned for it. Sure the materials are not the same, but they tick a lot of similar boxes for people looking for similar cameras.
Only Fuji camera with IBIS and stacked CMOS is XH2s. Now do the math again.
Twice the price for micro 4/3 who would be stupid enough to switch?
So basically the Nikon Zf treatment. Retro homage, with new tech. Just an observation. Don’t kill me
Dawg it doesn’t do any of the thing that people like fujis care about.
Such as?
@ classic controls, simple menus, actual decent film sims, aps-c.
Not weird unlabelled controls / dials that do multiple things, plus a bunch of tech that bloats a camera and takes away from a pure photography experience. I like the OM system but they’re not super comparable IMO
🕉️ System 😄
X-T5 is by far cheaper and well established...no threat to Fuji or any other brand at a $2000 price tag. With the same money you can even buy a second hand X100VI.
micro 4/3 for $2000????? and it’s not even smaller than any of the full frame or apsc cameras. feels like it’s competing with those old second hand $200 micro 4/3 pentax cameras
Which micro 4/3 pentax are you talking about?
Show me cheaper camera with Stacked CMOS, IBIS and 1053 hi-end AF system. Thanks.
Fuji Killer?!? 😂😂😂 MFT is good for video, lousy at stills in low light and Olympus is the king of horrific menus...
oh, and at a ridiculous price point...
Have you tried OM-1 or newer models?
Lol when I watch this video I get message from Om systems imagine sharing, Like look we got new Om 3 mat neuen objectiven
Photography first - flip out screen? 😂
Lmao this thing is a joke, not a threat to Fuji and I'm a Nikon / Sony person.
Not to mention Nikon APS-C lenses lineup which does not come remotely close to M4/3 portfolio.
more like Oly--i mean OM System's biggest threat lmao.
Wait, are you actually 6ft 8, or is that just a tall tale?
why would anyone buy this over an Om5?
if any camera is more apealling than the xm5 its the om5 already available at semi £700 used still has Pdaf... live nd... full weather sealing... 5 axis Ibis. external mic in.
OM5 is great balance for most of those talking about price and comparing this AF/FPS monster to lowend fuji toys.
Lol every feature in this camera is soooo gimmicky. Im suprised they didnt offer their menu to be in comic sans. Looks like OM didnt learn anything from the failures of Olympus. This retro-styled OM camera exists only to remind people how beautiful Fujifilm cameras are. Major L
2k for a micro four thirds camera? 😂 Sure... And a 50 mm f/3.6 lens is also nothing to write home about. They can put as much "computational photography" into the software as they like, they can't cheat physics.
Threat/killer? lol and im a m4/3 with 4 olympus & 3 Lumix cameras user, ( and 4 Fuji cameras) what were you thinking, did you review this this waffle in your sleep. that said i have ordered one ;)
2.3 milions dot evf 😂😂😂
Yeah no, not enough in 2025 for this ridiculous price
m4/3 for 2000$ ?? 😄
how do you guys review a camera and not do a single high iso noise test... jesus
At this price tag it’s dead before launch. Pity.
i rather buy zf , what a joke price for m43 sensor
The price of this camera is proof m4/3 is dead and youtubers will schill anything. 2000? Haha
6'8" WTF!!!! You giant! No wonder you live in Canada. The UK can't fit you in it... 🤣
