Another great video Reed - thanks. IMO smart speakers will never entirely go away; but for me, my intent is to limit their functionality to basic timers and web searches. Everything else I plan to program into Home Assistant - I hate how much data they gather. If I look into my crystal ball, I would place my SWAG on Alexa being the first to go - but I can see valid reasons for why any of the 3 might be be first or last. Only time will tell.
Would love to see a similar comparison for smart home hubs. Your previous video is 2 years old and it would be interesting to see how new features and new players in the space might change your opinion.
Virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa have become conversational partners, responding to complex inquiries and understanding context in ways that surprise users.
I can’t wait to see chat gpt implemented in a voice assistant of some sort. My Google home devices have become frustratingly difficult to talk to due to their lack of ability to understand context half the time, and constant errors when it asks me if I want to know more information about something, but then doesn’t give me more when I say yes.
Yeah, the same issue here, Google Assistant on my Sonos Roam speaker is glitchy and gets unresponsive most of the time, quite frustrating. Same thing happened yesterday with my Huawei M5 Light Android tablet, was working absolutely fine before. Aside from that, being a person with visual disabilities I have an important thing that annoys me, is that asking for more information about a topic is not working for me either; Let’s suppose that I ask Google Assistant a topic, for example: What can cause a throat infection? She reads me the first paragraph, but when I ask her for more information about this topic or this article, she can’t understand me at all, does whatever she wants and this is quite frustrating, same thing happens when I ask her for word definitions, unbelievable that GA now has this awful limitation or bug having the google searcher inside. Being from Mexico I can’t contact GA tech support to sort it out, and I asked this question on the forums but I received an answer from an expert that told me Google assistant is designed to only being able to give short answers which it’s a bad problem for visually impaired people like me. Is really Google aware of this issue? Will bi a fix soon?
@@4rzaluz but it can’t speak and read you WEB articles just like Alexa does, can it? It’s time for the brands to think also on making content for people with vissual disabilities, not just for normal-seeing people
Here in Sweden the battle is between Google and Siri. Alexa doesn’t speak swedish and has only been available to buy directly from Amazon for between one to two years (and there are still a lot of Echos like the Echo Studio that you can’t buy) Siri learnt Swedish on the HomePod just over a year ago. Google was the first and therefore have by far most the biggest market share here in Sweden. But Apple is catching up…
Sure but it’s more user friendly to be able to use your native language. And the kids cant speak that much english. But yeah, the main reason for Echo not really being that popular here ik Sweden is the lack of possibillity to buy their full product range here.
I think they’ll all survive. They’re like car companies, the differences will become less noticeable, but people like options. It’s annoying they each have their own niche in my opinion. I want all three for different reasons, but would really prefer just one assistant that can do it all.
I have both Google Assistant and Amazon Assistant (Alexa) and I can say Google Assistant performs better than Alexa. Many questions I ask both Assistants, Google Assistant answers well, however Alexa most of the time doesn't have response even for the most obvious question. The UI (phone) of Google Home App is also fluid and not as complicated as Alexa. The only pro I see with Alexa is, it connects faster when I share/transfer my music to it via any music apps unlike Google home that takes some time.
Google's obvious biggest problems are obviously the routine and automation integration and customization. The speaker and assistant itself is good. Overriding custom questions and routines 3rd party commands require need work. I'm referring to services like myq that require you to say 'ask myq'. If you use the command like close the garage doo it will work close to 100% of the time but if you use a few lines that would replace "ask myq is the garage door open" it mostly responds with the time of local autoshops. Not really sure if there's something that makes sense out there. I know there have previously been work arounds. None are successful for seemless garage door and google assistant integration.
I have all three. Apple's only claim is that Siri always speaks at a normal volume. Otherwise, stay away. Siri is the worst and the support is a fraction of Alexa or Google. "The Smart Home Solver" told us the truth.
@@davidenson4102 I have Apple home and Alexa. Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
Thanks for not being bias. I know you're pro Apple ecosystem. My home is mainly Amazon with one Google Assistant device which I kept before switching over to Amazon speakers/smart displays.
Honestly the timing of this video couldn't be better. Your Smartbulb video came so handy too. I was mostly going towards Apple's eco-system because how it can be used when being offline (in case of internet cut-off for whatever reason) but here in Poland I can get 2x Nest Hub 2 with leftover for like 3 cheeseburgers, for the price of one HomePod Mini. And since thread roll-out is so slow, Google is the way to go... for now. At least in my case.
Apple HomePod Mini is not so much expensive comparing to Amazon Echo (Dot version has awful audio). The bigger issue is that Siri is very limited comparing to Alexa. I don't think a speaker price should be a main factor when you choose your smart home ecosystem.
Same idea for me as well, I have the nest hub gen 2 and I agree with his assessment in the video. It is amazing and super useful to have! It completely replaced my nest mini's even if I moved to apple which I'm currently thinking of, I'm definitely keeping it. The hub I would use for apple would be the apple tv instead of the home pod mini.
Would love if you talked about what you do for all of the custom smart speaker dialog you use in your videos. I know there are roundabout ways of getting them to read text, but as much as you include dialog with and between them in your videos I have to think you've come up with an interesting or creative workflow for it by now.
I’ve noticed that Amazons major issue is their lack of different languages as one of the main complaints I see for Amazon is lack of language options I saw a comment about the lack of Swedish,Indonesian and finish
Shortcuts lets you create custom voice commands. “Hey Siri, I’m getting ready for bed” starts up a sleep playlist on my bedroom HomePod and dims the lights.
Does any of them support conditional routines, like "Turn on the lights after the sunset only if I'm home" and "Turn on the lights when I'm back if it's already after the sunset"?
Great video as always! But I'm SURE I've seen you mention Siri Shortcuts on a past video, did you forget they exist? Sounds exactly like what you're describing Google/Amazon doing at around 7 mins. And for more basic sets of commands you can of course do scenes in HomeKit for home stuff specifically.
I've been trying to stick with Apple, but my kids room has two fairy light strings and a galaxy lamp that work with Alexa/Google. I've added Google Home to my iPhone and her tablet so we can make schedules and turn them on/off when we want to. She could also use a home assistant with a screen as a clock/music player. I'll probably get one the next time they go on sale.
Hello, could you please do a segment addressing the recent Google Assistant identity crisis where it just changes a set voice and changes to female voice on its own. I've set mine for years now on male voice and asking time other simple tasks it reverts to default female voice then reverts back again to set male voice. No one at Google seems to care, it seems this problem is getting worse and many others having identical problems.
I will add that if you're worried about privacy I think Apple and Google are fairly on par. While Apple does pay for a ton of privacy advertising, they have continuously been hit with similar amounts of breaches and have proven their willingness to work with government officials to give private data.

But when you use Alexa anyone can give her command - it can't recognize voice. Other ones also have this problem? it's dangerous, when someone who shoudn't be in your home can open your smart lock (front door) via Alexa :)
@leesiuu Ah same as other reply. Any security device like alarms and door locks will ask for a code. Or at least there is an option for this. I think also option to validate on your phone (biometric). I skip this by not using voice commands for these things though but instead routins and NFC keyrings.
Amazon just had to choose the name of my dog for another wake word, does make for some good family annoyance since Alexa will respond when my family is commanding the dog. Great video as always!
I just tried to have the Apple ecosystem but everything is so expensive and there’s not alot of compatibility in the market, I returned my Apple home pod and went back to Alexa today
Did the same thing Alexa and Google are compatible with more brands and are easier to pair with some products. Homekit is just terrible I recently replaced my Homepod mini and my Google Nest Speaker (too slow and glitchy) with Alexa speakers and I have no regrets
I recently got a echo dot 3 from my very nice friend any my favorite feature is also the announcement feature, it also works with my sisters amazon kids tablet!
Have you had any problems with Google Home being just bad lately? I've seen several posts on reddit about these issues. I've been holding off on doing much in the way of home automation, but was leaning towards google since I've got android phones and a nest doorbell. Now I'm leery of that choice because of all the issues I've read about and google's history of just dropping certain products in the past.
I’ve experienced Google home getting worse lately. Commands that used to work before, don’t anymore. The instances where Google can’t understand me has increased a lot. I name a room dining room, and previously, when I said “turn of dining” without setting any specific routines, it would turn off all devices in my dining room. But now, I have to say the full “turn off dining room” for it to work, otherwise, it tells me there’s no such device found. 😡
Google has become horrendous lately. Doesn't understand half of the things I say, sometimes gets stuck in a loop for absolutely no reason, commands that used to work fine before now don't etc. I own an Iphone and sometimes I have to simply ask Siri to do basic things like turning off the lights in a certain room etc. Definitely Google has become very bad.
Hey, it would be awesome if you could do a super barebones, beginner guide to setting up smart home, or even just a room! Just the essentials; lights, maybe a speaker; whatever you think a solid 'smart room' would need! Trying to get into smart home stuff and want to try with my dorm before doing it at the folks' 😂
I have Google Everything. Being able to add members to my household on the Google is super easy. As well, my parents speak Spanish and Google easily picks it up and translates it much better. I’ve tried it with Alexa and she seems to struggle at times sometimes having to ask Alexa twice. So for now Google has me hooked!
Glazed over the most important thing, with HomeKit, your smart devices are controlled locally. It’s not Google or Amazons cloud reaching in to control a device. It’s your AppleTV or HomePod that actually controls the device.
This is your best video yet! 😂😂😂 you should win an Oscar for it. Maybe, original script, or visual effect (those multiple Reeds) or performance by a supporting robot
-use Google for needing information outside of home automation -use Alexa easily for the best all around home automation integration - use Siri .. for Apple ecosystem users😅
Apple, not taking Custom voice commands is not true, you can use Shortcuts on the iPhone to program actions tied to specific voice commands on the HomePod.
Well I just got the echo show 5 from the recent prime day for $40 and it included one of those hue smart lightbulbs...my only gripes is the screen is a bit small, but if you have it on a nightstand I guess it's convenient... Also, because of the way it sits (without a stand) pointing up if you use it as a security cam to check your home while you're away the view is mostly towards the ceiling...granted I have it on my kitchen counter but still. I guess that's why they sell you the stand for it so you can have those adjustments...other than that I'm liking it so far... by the way, you mentioned that Alexa doesn't do follow-up questions or doesn't do them well. I don't know if they did an update since this video but you can indeed do follow-up questions without having to say "Alexa"... And because I have a firestick it pairs up quite nicely since I can have it send videos to my tv and such. I can even turn off my tv just by asking Alexa... something I couldn't do before. the only thing I'm trying to figure out now is that in the past few days I use to get various tips and suggestions as a screen saver and now I tend to see 1 or 2 blank screens where information used to be. Not sure why that is...if I get another it will be the echo show 8 because it's bigger.
In India, everyone i know of having a smart speaker/display have an Amazon Echo device. Even I was looking for Echo dot 5 reviews on youtube and ended up here in this video. Thanks for the video btw.
I have all Google apart from alexa in the living room because of a ring doorbell. As soon as the wired nest doorbell gets released in the UK I'll be all google
We have an Echo Dot in every room - acquired gradually during great sales. They're so convenient, but the "by the way" makes me crazy. So many times I've wished I could turn off the "by the way" mode. Just answer my question, without all the back chat, please!
I know that Apple is not able to learn really from the user, because the HomePods are not operating on a Cloud but that is for me the biggest selling point. They can operate localy in your home network and because of that, there es very good latency and it can operate without an internet connection to a server if the Connection from your router breaks down. Greatings from Germany!
Did I miss something? I'm fairly sure you can program routines for Siri in the Shortcuts app (though you technically have to do it with an iphone or ipad).
I just started the smart home life and just went with Alexa without thinking. It's not too bad to be honest. I am not rich, so I am slowly building out my smart home.
To be fair, Siri should win the routines section by a long shot, you don’t do ir through the home app, but through the shortcuts app, and what you can do with that app is just amazing It goes far beyond just smart home controls
My google assistants are getting so slow, resetting modem and router don’t help. I also have echos and they are SO much snappier when responding for local commands
With your video i realized just how many usefull things are locked in my google assitant because of my region i live in brazil and the "and" function is locked here for some reason
My Amazon echo thing with a screen has a camera too. There’s a button you click, it’s like “privacy mode” Alexa won’t listen to you or watch you. The light bar glows red on that mode. There’s even a slider thing that slides over the camera if you don’t want the camera, for extra security.😅
So which assistant do YOU think will be the first to go, or last the longest? ...I have my own theory but I want to hear yours.
I'm just waiting for home assistant voice control to get good. Then my data wont be shared, and I wont have "by the way" all the time.
can't wait for cortana chatgpt
So I am a long time Alexa user, I love it except for the notifications of advertisements such as "by the way"
Edit missed that part in the first watch

"Alexa. Hey Google. Self-destruct!" Hilarious.
Did the same thing
Alexa and Google are compatible with more brands and are easier to pair with some products.
Homekit is just terrible
I recently replaced my Homepod mini and my Google Nest Speaker (too slow and glitchy) with Alexa speakers and I have no regrets
Great video! I currently have a Google Nest Mini gen 2. What is the update to this? Is Google going to release a Nest Mini gen 3? Thank you!
I haven’t heard anything about an update but they should!
I mainly run Google. But have a few Echo's around the home as I have a Ring doorbell. Google is who I hope wins though
I’ve been able to have Siri turn off the lights in two rooms, so in theory they are different commands, although the same across room.
Hopefully Apple makes HomePod Pro with screen
One thing whch would be nice for a future video is if you spent a video going through which has the best app for smart home control.
Alexa for me, works so well.
Same
Wow these things really haven’t evolved as much as I assumed. I’ll wait for the equivalent of ChatGPT-4 version.
Hey, it would be awesome if you could do a super barebones, beginner guide to setting up smart home, or even just a room! Just the essentials; lights, maybe a speaker; whatever you think a solid 'smart room' would need! Trying to get into smart home stuff and want to try with my dorm before doing it at the folks' 😂
start with a smart speak & smart bulb.
I use siri but like what you mentioned in the video. I worry a lot about my privacy..I'm considering to buy Alexa... Is it better??
lol no stick to Apple dude
Thanks, you made my clock self destruct...
Siri: Don’t put me back in there, no please, no, no 5:00
Glazed over the most important thing, with HomeKit, your smart devices are controlled locally. It’s not Google or Amazons cloud reaching in to control a device. It’s your AppleTV or HomePod that actually controls the device.
You can do custom commands with Siri and HomePods using Siri Shortcuts
Which one works off line too?
This is your best video yet! 😂😂😂 you should win an Oscar for it. Maybe, original script, or visual effect (those multiple Reeds) or performance by a supporting robot
I still use Pandora THANK YOU!!! 😂I used to you Google Music back in 09
Love the ending ! 😂
I’m on team Alexa.
I never had issues but I hate the fire stick, too many issues, I switched to Apple TV.
-use Google for needing information outside of home automation
-use Alexa easily for the best all around home automation integration
- use Siri .. for Apple ecosystem users😅
ive been waiting for a video like this
Bro I just whispered to my Alexa I had no idea that was a thing! Neat! 😂
The ending is the best part! lol stay tuned!! So funny- I loved it
2 mins in and i find myself more torn!!🤣🤣🤣 😅
In India, everyone i know of having a smart speaker/display have an Amazon Echo device. Even I was looking for Echo dot 5 reviews on youtube and ended up here in this video. Thanks for the video btw.
I love the videos where you have them fighting 😂
Another great video from you!
The first one who collaborate with ChatGPT 6:00
Which is Sri
Amazon is my choice. Thanks for the comparison.
I’ll take the one with a screen over the one without a screen , every time.
You can.... just say "Alexa, stop By The Way" to disable the by the way replies.
“Yes, my displays are top class, the competition can kiss my ...” 😆😆
that line "hey Google self destruct" triggered my google home, haha.
2:08 HAHAHAHAHA ME.
What about an open source option? Something not tied to a mega corporation or big media that can work offline.
I was hoping you would compare the sound quality for playing music on them.
Great comparison, well done
Thanks mate! I loved every second of this video, I just laid in bed trying them functions out as you were mentioning them😅. Totally subscribing
Turns out Google actually has a response to "Hey Google, self destruct" 😄
That is really amazing ! Great reviews and comparison . Thank you for letting us know.
To be fair, Siri should win the routines section by a long shot, you don’t do ir through the home app, but through the shortcuts app, and what you can do with that app is just amazing
It goes far beyond just smart home controls
My google assistants are getting so slow, resetting modem and router don’t help. I also have echos and they are SO much snappier when responding for local commands
1:38 the follow up questions work for me on my Alexa
With your video i realized just how many usefull things are locked in my google assitant because of my region i live in brazil and the "and" function is locked here for some reason
Apple is my automation/home assistance. But Google is my bedside table clock and simply that a clock….
My Amazon echo thing with a screen has a camera too. There’s a button you click, it’s like “privacy mode” Alexa won’t listen to you or watch you. The light bar glows red on that mode. There’s even a slider thing that slides over the camera if you don’t want the camera, for extra security.😅
