  • Thirteen years after the fall of the Taliban, women in Afghanistan continue to suffer oppression and abuse.
Research by Global Rights estimates that almost nine out of 10 Afghan women face physical, sexual or psychological violence, or are forced into marriage.
In the majority of cases the abuse is committed by the people they love and trust the most - their families.
While shelters are trying to provide protection and legal help to some, many women return to abusive homes because there is no alternative. Unable to escape their circumstances, some are turning to drastic measures like self-immolation to end their suffering.
Has enough progress been made on women's rights in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban? Share your thoughts with us @AJ101East

I don't get it. These men were brought into the world and raised by their mothers, women. How do they not respect the loving nature of the women around them? I just don't get it.

+Akosa Ihtravarkahc No. That's incorrect. Violence against women is a cultural norm in Afghanistan, it is a product of boys being raised in environments where it is accepted and even expected of men to keep 'their women' in line.
Islam itself does not look down on women or promote violence against women, as was mentioned in the video if you actually watched.

islam is significant part of culture, it cannot be excluded. it is at
least a partial problem. islam suggests men to force women "in line". it
also allows beating an unobedient wife. this method is not considered
"violence" by islam its considered teaching beading. they have different
      definitions of innocence and equality.

Despite disliking that lawyer, I find this comment insensitive. They don't live in some western country where there are many different resources to keep victims away from abusers. Being totally dependent on her husband and family, plus having a small child and a baby on the way, what choice does she have? Yes, that lawyer is bad, but what's worse is that they have a system where living with your abuser is necessary for you to keep your children.

I'm not sure if this is the reason why Muslim men I'll treat women and I personally know of such an abused woman literally " BOOTED" till completely BLUE AND BLACK THROUGHOUT the upper and lower body HIDING under that long garb. The other day we discussed this Adam and Eve in our studies....one of the reasons why women are treated badly in certain cultures is cos it is THEIR UNDERSTANDING that ALL BLAME FALLS AT EVE. What CORRUPT, WARPED THINKING. These religious bigots need to study HERMENEUTICS to grasp the PROPER UNDERSTANDING if they fall in this category of thinking.

@@timepickle8443 I am a "leftist" from the cradle and know e.g. Noam Chomsky`s point of view. And I agree to 99%. But I also studied enough "ethnology" (cultural anthropology) to be at least a little aware that things are not that easy . "Afghan" is not like "French" or or "German" is now (and even those national identities were birthed by eradicating smaller identities in form of little "tribes" with different dialects or even languages). Afghanistan is a tribal country. It is not a monolith. Groups are seeking dominance over others. And this is not a new thing. Afghan society was always "belligerent" in historic times, the idea of being a warrior was always held in the highest esteem.
The "West" fighting a war against Afghan people was not the thing that upsets the minds of local leaders. War was in the "old world" (which includes Europe) a "normal" occurrence. (I am not saying that it was a good thing or that people did not suffer from it or that everyone "liked" it) It happened often; inside what we see now as a "country" (intertribal warfare or struggle for power) or coming from the outside (neighbours like Persia or "great conquerors" like the Arabs (bringing Islam, changing the culture completely) or Genghis Khan. Only in modern times (after two world wars and the debacle in Vietnam) we (leftists in the "West") finally see war as a thing that should be eradicated.
What DID UPSET THE MINDS of Afghan men was "modernisation". Some Afghan leaders tried to modernise the country. Modernisation was and is widely accepted (from infrastructure to high tech weapons), not only in Afghanistan but lots of tribal countries (e.g. in the Middle East and Africa) - EXCEPT if it means to give WOMEN RIGHTS.
What people in the West do not understand is that the "women`s question" is not a tangent to the real issues in the Middle East and other predominantly Muslim countries. It is a question of CRUCIAL importance in the eyes of the fighters themselves!
Traditional tribal societies in those areas are patriarchal in structure (this is not an ominous invisible system as feminists would describe it - it is actual patriarchy, where a father/head of the family CAN ORDER a death, e.g. of a daughter, and other members of the family will follow that order without much quibbling). Islam reenforces and enshrines that patriarchal structure. It "sanctifies" this oppressive mechanism, makes it impervious to criticism or change.
The horrible treatment of Afghan women is the result of a patriarchal (religiously sanctified) system asserting its dominance. In fact, in their eyes it is the "morally correct" thing to do to! Keeping women in an inferior position, deciding about their life and their death means to follow the morally correct path!
The conundrum remains: How to change Afghan society so that women are not victimized? How to make women true equals?
I do not know. A stronger and "better" UN would surely be part of the answer. As are the many NGOs that try to better the lives of women in the developing world.
I just know one thing: Ignoring the harsh fact of Afghan women`s suffering will NOT bring about change for the better. "Cultural Relativism" is a dangerous cop out. It brings only pain and suffering. It is leaving vulnerable people (mostly women) all around the world in a inhumane situation. HUMAN RIGHTS ARE UNIVERSAL. We have to act accordingly.
The situation in Afghanistan illustrates perfectly that most ongoing conflicts have no "good" sides. Both (or more) parties are "bad" in different ways. There is no happy end, even if the US would "leave all those countries alone".
Women are living in isolation and silence. We just hear the men from those areas, shouting loudly and angrily, blowing things up, shooting people down. Women are mute in the shadows. Their plight gets easily overlooked by us in the "West" who are supposed to care for the victims and for injustice. If we continue this WE ARE COMPLICIT.

Lima Baidariwal This women beating culture flows out of the patriarchal values in Quran. patriarchy was the norm in all societies earlier mainly because it provides stability during times of war. But difference here is patriarchy is directly inscribed in Quran itself man beating disobedient wife is legally allowed according to Sharia. Due to religious approval and protection it becomes very difficult to change muslim societies.

fast learner There are a few example here and there of societies led by women that still exist today. And new ones are have come to exist in Africa. I don't know anyone who has lived for a 100.000 years - so who knows how many matriarchies there were when monotheism was a none issue and just nature and mother earth was worshipped. Especially male historians are playing guessing games on the premise of what they have come acustomed to and accept as the norm: the social structure dictated by men who established monotheistic and or patriarchal gods believe systems. I refer of course to the three big ones and the ancient gods in the first "civilizations".
Do you really think that 100.000 years ago, if a woman was a good hunter and provide the family with a lot of game, the dudes of the family would have said "You can't hunt because..." Or that she can't lead the clan or make decision for the family. That opinion would have been based on what preconceived notions...? Why would it exist?
And how would anybody know for certain today...

I was born in Afghanistan 2. Moved to Iran to live like a human being, just to be treated like trash and get beaten or insulted everyday, which lead me to depression, anxiety, self-hatred and low self-esteem. 3. I mean, I'm always the only one to fall in love... I got used and cheated on several times, that's when I gave up.. 4. Some men here are disgusted to be with women like me, just a foreigner from a disgusting country.. No matter how much I try to change myself to be what they want me to be, I'll never be like their ideal type. Also, my biggest fear is to get married to an Afghan or Iranian... I fear men..

These videos are so important and I'm glad we have social media ...such as youtube to learn about these information. We need to help...not just as a country..not just as a state...not just a city...just as being a human. Being a human that is not happy. A human that is hurt. Abused. Raped. Hurt. WE as a human need to change that. And it is important. And i m glad to learn and watch this video.

it's sad to know that there's this part of the world where "home" was the scariest place to be. it shouldn't be that way. it should be the place full of love, understanding and peace no matter what religion we belong. sending all my prayers to these beloved women.

"The best thing a man can do for his children is to be good to their mother."
A mothers connection to her child is not cut with the umbilical cord. They are emotionally connected. Everything the mother feel, the child- boy or girl - experiences also. If a mother lives in fear, pain and despair, those are the feeling the child will grow up with. How can any child be happy if this is the case? You destroy the next generation when you destroy your women's joy and spirit.

My ex emotionally and physically abused me daily... his mom and dad joined in when they were home. When I became pregnant he kicked me out and accused me of the baby not being his. After she was born they did a dna test and then applied for a 30 day tourist Visa for her and fled to Iran and never came back... the only time I get pictures of her is when he demands me to go mess around with another man and record it and send it to him.. I no longer do that and he no longer sends me pictures or talks to me about her anymore... these people are so damaged, this is their norm... I feel for these women... only reason I did not go with them is for fear they would kill me over there and no one would know.
