Thanks to everyone for watching my videos and checking out my channel. Many viewers have asked about my musical taste so that it can help them make recommendations from Pentatonix as well as other artists. If you flip over to my "About Me" page you will see that I covered my tastes in detail. I really appreciate everyone's contribution to my channel and videos with your feedback, comments and of course recommendations. I will be putting some new reactions out very soon! - Greg

You and Avi Kaplan had the same kind of parents. That was also his musical background from his parents. He added Iron and Wine and some other current artists to his mix. Simon and Garfunkle was a particular favorite.
If you look at Avi's solo work it is listed in the new marketing category "Americana".
Depeche Mode is not a group they have covered but you will find they have done quite a bit in very different styles and genres. They are a pop music group. I enjoy their amazing variety of music they took on.

Mitch, the last soloist, is a true counter tenor, very rare short vocal chords, which gives him the voice of an angel.

    • @minaolenella869
      @minaolenella869 4 года назад +2

counter tenor is a technique where male singers sing mostly in headvoice, not a biological voice type. Mitch uses a lot of head voice, so it fits, but many counter-tenors are basses too. Mitch is a leggero (light) tenor sub-type, which is indeed very rare. Michael Jackson was one too. Their vocal chords are actually long- they can go lower than any other tenor, and their full chest voice is characterized with dark sound, sounding more like basses, why they are initially often confused with baritones. But they are more comfortable singing in mixed and headvoice and have typical light mixed extension in C4-G5.

If you are going to go down the Pentatonix rabbit hole, you should know is that Avi (bass - long hair gentleman in this video) left the band amicably in 2017 and was replaced by Matt. All other members have remained the same but newer people to discover PTX swear that Mitch (the high ranged counter-tenor) and Kirstin have been replaced because they change looks so often. The other two members are Scott (the first soloist here and is generally the lead) and Kevin (amazing beat boxer). They do have originals but if it's covers you're more interested in, really anything they do is awesome, but the staples that are covered besides this song are Daft Punk medley, Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound of Silence. Again, I think you'll enjoy the talent from any of the PTX video's you react to. Looking forward to seeing more PTX reactions as I enjoy seeing "newbies" reactions to them.

Their arrangements alone are impeccable. They’ve won three Grammys so far and two of them are for the arrangements. What’s most impressive is that they individually all have such different and distinct voices and tambres yet have an amazing ability to blend and sound so full and whole for five people.
Plus, they aren’t studio produced. I’ve been to see them in concert eight times now, they sound the same or even better. They are so tight

They are a top-tier a capella group. A capella is literally "from the chapel" in Latin. With three grammys in three different genres, they are anything but one-trick ponies. The more you see of them, the more you realize their astounding talent. Most of the time, Kevin (the beat-boxer) rarely sings, but when he does he sings tenor.

One of the favorites of Avi Kaplan fans. Someone added up his time in solos not counting the 2 songs Light in the Hallway and Standing By which he sings by himself at 5:15 minutes in 6 years. He now is a solo artist and you can hear him.

Thats Mitch for you. The Mitch effect was there during his whole solo, you were frozen and barely breathing. Shoot, your reaction was one of my favorites and then you said you probably wouldn't listen to them.
Bohemian Raphsody, Daft Punk Medley (1st Grammy), collaboration with dolly Parton Jolene (3rd Grammy), Dance of the Sugar Plum Ferry (2nd Grammy) a song with no words no less but if you tell me what kind of music you like I'm positive that we will be able to direct you to the video you will love. You won't believe what they can do.
On a side note your dog is so cute and when you started the video up with the basses solo the dog lifted it's head up. It was so cute

Also, Mitch is never offended when people say he sounds like a woman - his usual response is something along the lines of, "Aww, thank you! That's so nice!" And since he is non-binary he refers to himself as 'he' or 'she', seemingly as the mood strikes him. (Sorry, I know the pronouns weren't exactly right in there but the sentence just became way too complicated when I replaced 'he' with he/she/they.)

Hallelujah is a Leonard Cohen cover. If you want to hear them all sing solo parts, check out their cover of John Lennon's Imagine. Kevin (beatboxer) doesn't often sing solo parts, but he does in that one. A couple of great originals, if you want to check them out, are Love Again and Run To You. They also are famous for their Christmas albums, and a few favorites are Mary Did You Know, The First Noel, and a very original take on Silent Night.

The beat boxer (kevin) actually is a rather light tenor and an amazing singer in his own right. The bass is Avi (bearded second solo) ....but the bass line is handed off to Scott (first solo ...who is a baritone with an pretty amazing upper register and the ability to reach low ) ....so yeah the overall talent pool is pretty freaking deep.

Cohen the writer of this song did hear this version before he died a couple of years ago and declared it the best he had heard and nearly everyone has a cover of this piece. Im not a big vocal music fan much less acapella but this guys are so worth hearing. Ive listened to a handed of their covers and some originals and enjoyed every one of them. The level of talent an d ability to make beautiful music true to originals but with a great spin of their own makes some classics even better in their covers. Heard they have been listened to my 5 Billion times on you tube now. This cover has nearly 600M views. Incredible but understandable too

Kirstin ( Kirstie) Maldonado - mezzo soprano/ alto
    Mitch Grassi - counter tenor
Kevin Olusula - beatboxer, tenor, cello-boxing

Hello and thank you for reacting to Pentatonix (PTX for short). You should definitely react to their Daft Punk Medley. It won them their first Grammy. Also Imagine is a wonderful cover. Bohemian Rhapsody, Mary Did You Know, Royals to name a few. They've been performing together since 2011 and have only changed 1 member since (Avi Kaplan the bass with the beard left in 2017 and Matt Sallee joined). Their cover of New Rules x Are You That Somebody with new bass Matt is amazing. They also have some killer original music that should react to. (Love Again, Cracked, Water, Be My Eyes, Happy Now, to name a few). You can't go wrong with PTX.

As a new subscriber, thanks to this reaction, welcome to the wonderful world of Pentatonix. If you continue down the Pentatonix rabbit hole I am sure that you will find at least some of their covers and originals that you will love. Their covers run the gamut from classic rock/pop/rap/EDM/ and even a little Broadway. There is no "barber shop" and only a few real choral numbers that people generally associate with a capella. They, along with a few others that I am sure you will be introduced to in short order, have truly revolutionized the genre. PTX, for short, holds 3 Grammy awards and the honor of being the best selling a capella group worldwide all before the age of 30 for most of them. The obligatory intro songs that people usually start with include 'Imagine', 'Bohemian Rhapsody', and 'Daft Punk' (medley which garnered their 1st Grammy) before venturing out to their broader selections. With the holiday season approaching they also have an extensive Christmas music catalog.
One more thing you will notice as you continue this journey, a happy byproduct is that your subscibership will grow rather rapidly. Thanks to their rather obsessed fanbase (of which I am one), who love to vicariously experience others path of discovery. Their are a few other artist that I might suggest to amplify this effect. Morissette Amon (Phillipines), Sohyang (South Korea), and Dimash (Kazakhstan) are arguably the 3 best singers in the world right now. Each have different styles and unique vocal abilities and similarly devoted fans who flock to new reactors.
If you made it this far, I once again hope you will continue this trek. You may even discover that what you define as "your style", may change and broaden dramatically.

@@musicaddict5076 They released a quarantine EP a few months ago and recently released three more videos, one cover ('Mad World' by Tears for Fears) and two originals ('Happy Now' and 'Be My Eyes') from their new album of originals slated for February. All of which feature their new base, Matt, who replaced Avi Kaplan (Bearded Brunette) in 2018.
Definitely do not shy away from the originals. Every one is outstanding. There is one live performance that should not be missed after you become a little more familiar with them to see how they carry this in concert. It is their Popspring performance from 2016 featuring 4 originals and a medley of Michael Jackson songs. The sound quality is excellent since it was recorded and released by MTV. Link Below.

Welcome to the new world of a capella. Pentatonix and Home Free have rewritten the book on a capella worldwide. All of the suggestions for more songs to listen to are great. Pentatonix has 3 Grammys, one for their "Daft Punk Medley" (Daft Punk) which you listened to, one for their "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" (Tchaikovsky), and one for basically being Dolly Parton's backup band(?) on "Jolene". Also, try "Sound of Silence" (Simon & Garfunkel), "Imagine" (John Lennon), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Queen), "Mad World" (Tears for Fears), and of course, any of their Christmas music. For Home Free may I recommend their "Man of Constant Sorrow", "Ring of Fire" (Johnny Cash), and my favorite, "Helplessly Hoping" (Crosby, Stills & Nash) (and then a quarantined Italian Youth Choir's cover of Home Free's arrangement).

They also do quite a few medleys of multiple songs for a particular group : Daft Punk medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson, Evolution of Ariane Grande, and more "Evolution of ***" items. They've been working hard for about 9 years, so there is a lot.

I also was born in the '70's, but I was raised on '30's - early 60's music, then in 1980 it was Christian quartet and gospel music until middle school. So, I listen to a wide variety of music (not a huge fan of screaming heavy stuff and explicit stuff) as I tend to lean towards my roots. I really have been impressed by Pentatonix, Home Free, and Voiceplay. All three are very talented and I feel that each group has their strengths. :) I don't know what's been suggested to you, so sorry if I'm repeating.
From Pentatonix 'Mary Did You Know' is a great one if you want to hear the beatboxer, Kevin sing, 'Bohemian Rhapsody is another good song, and one of the newer song's with the new bass- Matt 'The Sound of Silence' (which I know was suggested already).
As for Home Free I'd suggest 'The End of the Road' by BoysIIMen and then head over to their channel and see what they have. They have more of a country sound so, I really didn't want to suggest something you didn't care for esp since I know you don't like country very much.
The songs from Voiceplay I would suggest would be (all of their songs are good): 'Boy Bands in 5 Minutes', 'The Little Mermaid Melody' or 'Moana Melody' (or both up to you), 'ACA Top 10 of 2019', and one of my favorites 'Oogie Boogie Song'.
To be honest all of the songs each group has is really good, it just depends on what you like music wise. :) Thanks for sharing your reaction!

If you haven't heard them sing, Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone), you should react to it. One of the best versions of this song. It is a gorgeous rendition by Pentatonix

Terrific reaction. Leonard Cohen. See their "live" version, they sound the same. Do listen to their cover of Kiiara's GOLD. IMAGINE from John Lennon, EVOLUTION OF RHIANNA, DAFT PUNK mash won their first Grammy. Then they won a Grammy for DANCE OF THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRIES, from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker (no words are spoken, fantastic ! ) We Pentaholics love everything they do, you can't go wrong. Each one shines in different songs. They sing all types of music.
Yes, Mitch can sing 6 octaves and is magnificent. The more you listen, the more you'll be amazed.
    Thank you.

Leonard Cohen is the author of "Hallelujah." For something completely different from Pentatonix, check out their "Daft Punk" medley. You'll ind they are not a one trick pony. If you want a little rap, you'll want to play "Can't Hold Us"... for country,"Jolene" with Dolly Parton...for a little Elvis, "Only Fools Rush In," for fun, "Making Christmas"...and for just jaw-dropping, how'd they do that, their take on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" must be seen to be believed.

Thing about PTX is that they're a capella in sort of the way Queen is rock. That is to say, technically it's true, but it really only tells.you a sliver of who they are as artists.

You should also react to Home Free. They are another a cappella vocal band, specializing in country music covers and originals, but they do some non-country covers as well. You really can’t go wrong with any of their videos so I’d start with a cover of a song you like and go from there.

If you want a really good song to react to, I would recommend "Wizard of Ahhhs". You will not find it on PTX's sight because it is a Todrick Hall video, but it features PTX. In fact, it should be a PTX song that features Todrick Hall, as Kirsten is the main soloist. The boys all have their solos as well (except Kevin). It is a lot of fun and very creative.
I would also recommend all of the songs that everybody else is recommending, Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk, Sound of Silence, Love Again, etc... You really can't lose with picking a song done by PTX, whether it is a cover or an original. As Todrick Hall says, "They are just so ridiculously talented".

Leonard Cohen writer. Beat boxer Kevin is doing all the sounds. First singer, Scott baritone, second singer is Avi bass singer, Kirsten is soprano, and then Mitch who is a counter/contra tenor and one of the best I've ever heard in all my years in music. The beat boxer has a tenor voice. The second guy to sing with the beard is Avi the bass singer. I was going to subscribe but since you really don't care for Pentatonix or even like a cappella groups I'll forego the subscribing of your channel. I truly understand now why you didn't go into the group thoroughly in your reaction. It is really good to broaden your horizon when it comes to music. I've been around it for 60 years and love most all types of music except for maybe rap. Wish you the best of luck with your channel. Now, if I see that you like classical, gospel and music from the 50's through the 80's (especially Righteous Brothers, Journey, Creedence, Motown et cetera), I'll take another look at your channel. God Bless.

While a great song, and their most popular video, this is actually not a good representative video, as the beat boxer never really got to do much live.
I would check out their cover of "Gold", their original "Cracked", or any of their Evolution Of.... videos, such as The Evolution Of Ariana Grande! Enjoy!!
(To hear the beat boxer sing, watch their cover of "Imagine"!)

This style of song may not be your thing, but you should give these guys another listen. They cover rock, opera, oldies, 90’s you name it. Try Bohemian Rhapsody, or their 90’s dance medley. Mary Did You Know or Oh Come All Ye Faithful, I promise you’ve never heard it done like they do it. If you start reacting to Pentatonix your subscribers will triple.
