First i have to say, i am a massive PTX fanboy. They are crazy talented, and the music group i listen to the most, for the last couple of years, but. The stomping in this particular performance has to be pre recorded. As i said, they are crazy talented, but they are still human. Sorry ... *duck* :)
@@garionth Yes, but even if the sound itself it's prerecorded (I agree that it's difficult to make that sound while wearing sneakers) he's stomping his foot at the right moments. You don't see his foot going one way and the sound another. So that makes me think that he can do it, it's only that it's unlikely he would get enough resonance on that floor with that kind of shoes. I read a comment about him using a special mat at their concerts to get the sound. And it makes sense, flamenco dancers, for example, use something like that when the floor is not appropiate for the zapateado.
@@KE-hr4sb @Haghenvelaen I agree with you both. In a stationary situation, he will pull it of with kind of a "step dance floor/board" miced up the right way. Just not in this particular performance, walking around in circles wearing sneakers :)

This is the BEST reaction video I have seen for Hallelujah. Jess noticed all of the little things that makes Pentatonix great. The harmonies and the arrangements are the best in the business. I am a long time fan who has been following them closely since the Sing Off in 2013 I have 10 of their CD's and have downloaded almost all of the music that I don't have on CD. They are simply THE BEST musical group there is, PERIOD.
I just read in another comment that you would love to meet Kevin. If you don't already know, he was classically trained on the Cello and has appeared in Carnegie Hall at 18; plays saxophone and several other instruments; was taught by Scott and Avi to improve his singing; speaks several languages (including Mandarin); graduated Yale and was accepted into their Medical School, but opted out for Pentatonix (a story in itself). He's the true musical genius of this group (although each of them are super, super talented), and if you react to his solo version of "Down", you will be convinced !!
Back to see this reaction again! Just as good, or better, second time around! And in addition to enjoying your technical analysis, I love watching your expressions as you listen and enjoy! Keep up the good work! 👌🙂
Loved all your insight and it was fun to see someone familiar with PTX and this song but new to the visuals. But my favorite part was "shush audience!" 😆
I love to hear professional singers like yourself do reaction videos. Thank you for a delightful, interesting and informative analysis of this performance. 🙂
I love the part when you're trying to hush the audiences 😂😂😂 very hilarious 🤣🤣 anwyays, keep on doing this kind of analysis! I learned so much from your videos like this!
This is one of the best, most informative reactions to this version of PTX's Hallelujah that I've seen and I've seen a lot! Yes Scott always sings the bass line when Avi (and now Matt) sing their solos. His range is insane. Well to be fair they all have incredible range! Kevin is so unbelievably talented isn't he? If you haven't seen it, treat yourself to watching his cover of Marian Hill's Down. He sings, beatboxes and plays the electric cello on it. It's a musician's masterclass. I love them all but I'm a Mitch fan for life! His voice moves me sooooo much! I've been a Pentaholic since they started up in 2011 but only got to see them live for the first time this May in London. They were phenomenal. I can't believe what they can do with their voices. They so deserve their three Grammy's and their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Thank you for this reaction!! I learned SO much about the nuances of what each singer was doing and that enhanced the beauty of this stellar performance. Thank you!
When you bring up Kevin keeping three beats this is what's happening. When he comes in at 7:16 tapping 8th notes with his left hand, then simply alternating 8th notes with his right making those instances 16th notes between the two hands, but since they alternate, it seems like a different rhythm but as a drummer, I can say, that beat is actually very straightforward. When his beatboxing comes in, he's alternating bass and snare on 8th notes with an accent 16th bass note to sound like a double kick drum beat before each snare hit and they are in perfect sync with his chest rhythm. Kevin is a true musician and he plays his body and beatboxing like a drummer.
Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your reaction. I absolutely love learning more about music and performance and what professionals like you find noteworthy. Thank you.
I love to watch reaction videos because I love music and I love to watch people love the same music I do, but I have to say that your channel offers so much more than that. So far I have only seen a few of your videos but I already feel like I have had learned so much from you and have a greater understanding of why I love the music I love. Great job! First time seeing you, really enjoyed your enthusiasm. Just subscribed. I only listen to PTX reactions,. Would love to see you react to their Amazing Grace
Yada Yada Yada, Pentatonix are GREAT! AMAZING!! AWESOME!!! And I would like to thank you for your wonderful reaction to their music, illustrating what each was doing in a way no other reactor I have watched/listened to has done. They are great, but it is you I want to thank! This is the first time I have had the privilege of watching one of your reactions and you are so much better than anyone else I have seen/heard so far. There are others I enjoy for various reasons (No, I won't start naming names), but for pure professionalism, and for making what is complex and beautiful more relatable to people like me who love music, but have no training or expertise in it was enlightening and very enjoyable. Thank you Soprano Notes, I look forward to watching some more of your videos! Happy New Year to you, as well!
I've seen so many comments on other videos claiming they are lip syncing. I just want to ask those people if they have ears. I'm glad you take the time to point out a few of the clear distinctions between their studio version and this one.
I just found your channel through the wonders of YT algorithms...great stuff! I have seen several others react to a capella groups, and it is refreshing to hear a little discourse on musical theory in addition to the "WOW" factor the group(s) tend to elicit, I would recommend one other video, and would love to hear your analysis on the Voctave/Kirsten (PTX)/ Jeremy Michael (her fiancee at the time) Disney Love Medley. It is much denser harmony wise...6-8 parts, and the sopranos freaking soar.
I love that you out a disclaimer about the meaning of the song in the description. I haven’t seen anyone else do that and I always wonder if people actually listen and process lyrics... like ever! You’re wearing my favorite color and it looks great on you! Love your voice and your reaction! This was a great Christmas find for me!
Melanie I loved reading your comment! I actually meant to say the disclaimer in my video but completely forgot. I think it's so important to say so people can get a better understanding of the context of the song. Thank you so much for even noticing. Merry Christmas!
Absolutely brilliant reaction - thank you for picking up on so very much! You caught things I had noticed were different from the recording but couldn't quite figure out why, so Thank You Queen for making it make sense to me!! I love that you could pick up on the harmonies as well as the solo lines, so many can't/don't and it makes such a difference that you did!! LOL when you realised Scott was doing the base line - he always covers the base when Avi/Matt are singing the solo section. :D I'm off to watch more of your reactions now! :D
You could react to the Music Vid of this song (shot in a desert). Since they're syncing to a studio recording there, Kevin's chest-thumps on the leather jacket are amplified a little more. Other than that, the balance is pretty much the same. Christmas-themed: Mary Did You Know (from this same Avi era) or Amazing Grace (new). Light-hearted Christmas: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Non-Christmas-themed: Bohemian Rhapsody. Daft Punk. Say Something. Sound of Silence. Kevin Olusola may be the most talented group member. Graduated from Yale pre-Med, and from Berklee College of Music. Speaks English, Spanish, Mandarin. Plays multiple instruments. There's a YT vid of him playing sax at Carnegie Hall when he was a teenager. By some accounts, he invented celloboxing. And he's engineered some of PTX's studio recordings. [I've read that the group decided at the last minute before release to switch Hallelujah from Christian lyrics back to the originals, and they were outside the U.S. at the time, so they just found a studio and Kevin set everything up for them to cut the new version.] Here's a vid of Kevin in the studio, multi-tracking himself by pre-planned live looping. And there's others where this came from. ruclips.net/video/IGjg193h4Ok/видео.html
Your video was the best critique of this song I’ve seen!!! You have an absolutely lovely voice and it’s nice to see a professional pick out all the cool things each of the members are doing but also thoroughly enjoying pentatonix as a fan too!!

I never got to see PTX in concert when Avi was there but I've seen them a couple of times w/Matt. When they sing this song, depending on how early it is in their tour and how their voices are holding up, when Matt sings his part, when he sings Hallelujah, he goes into his falsetto...it is flipping epic!!!

Ok, first of all...new subscriber here!!! Thank you for reacting to their live version of "Hallelujah"...If you like reacting to live performances you should react to their cover of "Silent Night". They appear to be at in a Church hallway. No Music here just their angelic voices. Avi and Mitch totally kills it on this one. Oh and if you haven't done so already maybe you can react to their cover of "Amazing Grace ( My chains are gone )" It's not live, but the video and scenery and the way they put their own spin on this song was absolutely fantastic. It's definitely a must see. Thanks again for your reaction and I hope you and your family have a safe and Happy Holiday season.
My first time seeing this song was their music video filmed at lake Bonneville. On the musical arrangement, my understanding it that Scott does most of that. He does get input from the other members of the group, but he does the final arrangement that they perform. I love their performance of "Be My Eyes" If you haven't seen it, look it up.
What even more amazing about Kevin is he actually has4 beats going. His left hand, his right hand, his mouth percussion, AND he's using foot stomps as well. He's a human metronome man.
I New to listening to you, and your reactions! This is my second time. The first was David Phelps. I'm blown away with your reactions and explanations of the songs!! Amazing Job! 🔥🤩 Thank you!
Kirstin, her voice is bright pastel yellow in color and tone. (*I'm a synesthete, I see sounds and hear colours.*) Avi's voice is dark chocolate tone wrapped in streaks of raspberry. Scott's voice is a strong full and steady glimmering Emerald green. Mitch's voice is very pastel... pink. Coral, pastel peach, pastel pink, with flecks of pastel yellow when he goes into his counter tenor. Kevin's voice is a deep velvet red, a bit crinkled and smooth at once, and it just gets brighter and/or deeper as he fluctuates.
There are so many voice coaches and singers that do these reactions and they are so beyond layman's speak. I'm not saying you oversimplified it's just relatable your explanation. It makes us all see, hear, and enjoy the music on a higher level. Thank you. I've subscribed and look forward to future reaction.
I loved your breakdown of this live performance! Your knowledge and breadth of musical interpretation is on keen display and I so appreciate it! I'm in love with this group. Each member brings a unique and personal spin of their own and it comes together rather brilliantly. Mitch in particular always stuns me; his voice always takes my breath away. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Cecilia Bartoli, Vivica Genaux and Sumi Jo! Thank you for this video and I'll keep on watching!!

I love seeing people figure out that Scott takes over the bass. :) FYI it's not just in this song. Whenever Avi (and now Matt) sings the lead, it's Scott doing bass. One of the best examples is You're a Mean one Mr. Grinch. He also sings the bass lead on the first verse of their rendition of Sound of Silence. Scott has a huge vocal range - over 4 octaves - he sings bass, baritone as well as baritenor/tenor.
Thanks Jon! I'm excited that my breakdowns make sense, it's reassuring for me and honestly helps me with communication a lot. Finding new ways to explain things is very important as someone who teaches music, so thank you!
Not only is Kevin keeping up three percussion lines in this song but he can also beat box while playing cello!! he is amazingly talented. they all are!! BTW your voice is lovely!
This video shows off who does what better than the MV so don't worry about any of the rest. The fact that they can do LIVE what they did in the MV is something they like to hold themselves true to. Kevin is the resident Genius with all the things he does. He's just built different and he absolutely deserves all the respect and encouragement in the entire world! :)
I have to say I love the way you describe what legato means. I'm going to use that! Talking about the relationship of a note to the one before and after it is more precise than just saying "smooth and connected" like is so commonly used.
I love your enthusiasm and your expert knowledge. I also like that you are not afraid to talk over certain parts - it helps many pieces flow better. And most of us have already heard many of the pieces you are reacting to, so your talking over portions isn't spoiling it, but too many stops can be frustrating. Also, Kirsten had a physiological issue that causes her mouth to kind of 'smirk'.

Thank you.
Awe, you're welcome! Glad you're enjoying it!
Wonderful analysis. Thank you.
I love to watch reaction videos because I love music and I love to watch people love the same music I do, but I have to say that your channel offers so much more than that. So far I have only seen a few of your videos but I already feel like I have had learned so much from you and have a greater understanding of why I love the music I love. Great job! Please keep uploading!!
Thank you so much! That's the whole point of my channel. To showcase new music to people and to help everyone understand why they like the music they listen to. Thanks for commenting!
Yessss Scott sang the base when avi was taking the lead 😄🙌I absolutely love their rendition and your videos ❤❤
It's not just in this song, Scott always takes the bass part whenever Avi takes the lead. The make the transition so effortlessly. It's just amazing.
I hope you will react to more Pentatonix, because I love their music so much and your reaction was amazing. I learned a lot and you are really good at explaining. (Even for a non native Englisch speaker like me.) Thank you 💙
I absolutely LOVE when Mitch has his solo part towards the end and you shush the audience. 😂😂 It's wonderful to see you fill with joy and excitement when you listen to music!
Seriously, I think we'd love to hear you sing along with this video, with no comments just so we can appreciate your voice
So sweet!
I'm commenting in the middle of the reaction to say that I LOVE YOUR REACTION to Scott singing the bass.
HUGE isn't even he right word!!!! They are simply amazing 😍
This is my favorite cover of this song. No one does it better. What a great breakdown, reaction, and analysis! THANK YOU!
Wow, what a wonderful reaction! I love how you break things down and explain them. New subscriber here.
Great reaction and spot on comments. You pay a lot of attention to their arrangement, and rightly so. Genius! It is so perfectly tailored to their amazing voices and range. I never get tired of listening to them. They are amazing. Happy New Year! 🤗
I just love how you pay attention on little things and explain to us and we can see the little things we missed because of your explaintions. I would like to see more of you reacting to Pentatonix thanks for sharing your reaction and knowledge with us
First time seeing you, really enjoyed your enthusiasm. Just subscribed. I only listen to PTX reactions,. Would love to see you react to their Amazing Grace
i so love watching music with you, it’s a joy
🤗🤗🤗
Merry Christmas!
love what you do. thx again for sharing!
I love your insights in theses analysis/reaction videos!
[I've read that the group decided at the last minute before release to switch Hallelujah from Christian lyrics back to the originals, and they were outside the U.S. at the time, so they just found a studio and Kevin set everything up for them to cut the new version.]
Here's a vid of Kevin in the studio, multi-tracking himself by pre-planned live looping. And there's others where this came from.

Omg that's impressive! I didn't know all of this about him. Thanks so much for the info and the link!
I enjoyed your reaction even more than the performance. You’re contagious.
Thank you 🤗♥️
Your video was the best critique of this song I’ve seen!!! You have an absolutely lovely voice and it’s nice to see a professional pick out all the cool things each of the members are doing but also thoroughly enjoying pentatonix as a fan too!!
I'm an inconditionnal ptx fan since I discovered them. I've never missed any performance, any audio of'em ... They are just stunning . Thks for reacting to them ... I'm a huge fan of your channel too since a few days ... Greetings from Burundi (a small country in eastern Africa) and a very merry Xmas to You and a wonderful happy new year 2021
Thank you so much John! I hope you and your loved ones have a beautiful Christmas this year!
@@jessicasopranonotes absolutely 👌 ... Thanks again 😊
In this live version Mitch is so relaxed he looks positively torpid. Amazing.
They are UNMATCHED 🙏 I saw them live it was LIFE CHANGING 😭😭😭 they jus got they ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️ on the Hollywood walk of FAME toooo❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
So cool!! I don't know anything about Matt's voice. I need to do a reaction to a live performance of them with Matt as their new bass!
@@jessicasopranonotes AGREE 100%...now we just need to find one, lol ;)
@@jessicasopranonotes ruclips.net/video/LmowFmjhEIs/видео.html this is a link to their version of sound of silence live! it sounds incredible, and barely any different from the studio version!
Hey, you got this video cleared, great!
Now let me watch it
Okay, watched and WOW, WOW, WOW
Pentatonix is great as usual, but Jess, you are a star.
When you cut in those examples, that extra effort is what is going to put you in the reaction video Hall of Fame. If there is such a thing. maybe we should start one and Jess, you are going in the first ballot.
Just WOW, WOW, WOW and Merry Christmas everyone!
Such nice words, thank you!! I try and incorporate things in my videos that I would like to see myself if I was a subscriber watching. So happy it's being received well. You're amazing for noticing and saying something. Merry Christmas!
I am so gratified to hear an analysis by someone who is also both gifted and trained! Your observations were thrilling to me! Such maturity and depth of knowledge in a younger woman made this the singular best analysis video I've ever seen. My warmest thanks 😇
I love hearing ptx and your analysis of their performance. How about doing ptx doing amazing grace next
OMG You are awesome. I want more Ptx reactions. Especially Amazing Grace, The Sound of Silence, My Favourite Things 🤗
"Do you know how hard it is to keep more than one rhythmic pattern going at the same time"
Piano players: Yup.
spot on...love musical experts that know what they are talkin about!!!! subscribed & thumbs up for sure!! oh man i will learn alot from you!
I just came across your channel today, and I have to say, you brought not to my heart. Thank you so much!
Love watching your reactions! Whatever artist you react to is just a bonus for me lol merry Xmas!
Thank you! That means so much. Merry Christmas!
Video Mitch: starts singing
Video Crowd: cheers
Jess to Video Crowd: Sssshhhh! Quiet!!!
Thank you for this reaction video, your views are unique and very interesting, and makes this reaction stand out to someone (me) who has seen thousands of reactions to this same video. Happy holidays!
lol. Thank you so much! Happy holidays to you and your family!
I am a new subscriber. I appreciate your review of Hallelujah so much. The analysis of technique was masterful. I hope you do more PTX reviews like Amazing Grace, Bohemian Rhapsody, and The Prayer. I would like to hear your analysis very much. Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole!
Here are a few more Pentatonix pieces that will blow your mind: Daft Punk Medley, Bohemian Rhapsody, Love again, and Radioactive.
Enjoy!
not only a huge Pentatonix fan .... but also a huge Soprano Notes fan ... Thank you Jess
Jess, you do such a great job with this. I learned a lot. Thanks!
Loved the reaction and your analysis :) great stuff!
I loved your video and how you enjoy and explained all the harmonies. I Definite subscribe
Excellent response video! Very informative!
I enjoyed your review very much. your depth of knowledge and your appreciation for the talent of these wonderful singers articulates the enormity of the love from their “pentaholics”. You have a wonderful ear for the things that make them so special. Plz do more reviews of PTX. 🥰
Thank you Kathryn! I will do my best! This video unfortunately got blocked but is available because I am going through the process of appealing it. Hopefully they let me keep up!
I'm speechless that was just amazing, when they harmonize I feel like I'm flying. Hope you will react to Jordin Sparks one day .
I enjoyed your reaction to this awesome PTX cover. PTX song reaction suggestions: For serious and beautiful "Amazing Grace". For silly, fun and beautiful "Come Along".
This was amazing! I look forward to more PTX breakdowns. I watch only PTX reactions, pretty much daily
So many to react to, it's hard to make suggestions, but these are MY faves:
-Wizard of Sash's with Todrick Hall
-Come Along
-Can't Hold Us
-Daft Punk
-Bohemian Rhapsody
-Say Something
-Sound of Silence
-New Rules + Are You That Somebody
Have you seen Kevin's cover of Down by Marion Hill? If not, you must, must, must! He is unearthly.
Thanks a bunch for those recommendations!
@@jessicasopranonotes Todrick Hall's Wizard of Ahhhs featuring Pentatonix. Todrick started on season 9 of American Idol. Now a Broadway star (x4). He has choreographed for Beyonce and worked extensively on RuPaul's Drag Race for years.
I love seeing people figure out that Scott takes over the bass. :)
FYI it's not just in this song.
I genuinely had no idea! I'm really looking forward to seeing more of their performances and paying attention to that switch in roles ☺️
Such a nice video, Jess. Love you and your enthusiasm. You are very good at breaking down these songs as well.
Thanks Jon! I'm excited that my breakdowns make sense, it's reassuring for me and honestly helps me with communication a lot. Finding new ways to explain things is very important as someone who teaches music, so thank you!
I have never heard anyone break down a song as well as you do, thank you.
I really appreciate all the nuances you are pointing out.
Good lord your reviews are execellet! You are beautiful! And I love you!
Ppl have no idea how multi faceted talented all 5 of them are but I'm seeing you might ❗️ they all 5 are doing SO MUCH ...like I said UNMATCHED 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great reaction and analysis/explanation! Brand new subscriber here - Happy New Year!
I couldn't agree more!
@@jessicasopranonotes :)
Scott fills in for bass all the time and rarely do people catch it. They ARE ALL SO TALENTED!
You are AWESOME ! ❤️ ❤️Your Voice.Thank you for opening my eyes to greatness!
Thank you Margaret! I should let you know that you are amazing for even saying something so positive! Hope you have a nice weekend ♥️
I have to say I love the way you describe what legato means. I'm going to use that! Talking about the relationship of a note to the one before and after it is more precise than just saying "smooth and connected" like is so commonly used.
Yup lol our boy Scott is a beast. He can hit those high notes and lower bass notes. He’s soooo talented such a beautiful voice
Please react to Pentatonix singing “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)”
It's great to hear you appreciate Avi because you're an opera singer, and Avi was trained in opera and majored in it in college.
