Home Free is a deep rabbit hole to dive down
Just the beatbox on it's own is unbelievable. It sounds like a legit drum kit.
That *IS* Chance ! I love how you are breaking them down technically....and you are appreciating them. So many dismiss them as "country bumpkins" but they actually are very good with the techniques they can use & come up with....4 of the 5 do have college degrees in music or music theory....they are not just unsophisticated "country guys". PLEASE ma'am can you disect their cover of *HELPLESSLY HOPING*....it has *INSANE* harmonies...no beatboxing so you get full 5 part harmony. I think you'll really enjoy it !

I listen to many of the vocal coach breakdowns but Jess's breakdowns have a depth that few can compete with. Even with Dimash & I've heard every song reacted to between 50 & 200 times because I've been following him since 2017. Jess had new info on SOS that no-one else had. Great insight.

You have to hear a few more of their songs before you listen to mayday for the full mind blowing affect. They did a good job of Fulsome Prison blues, And ring of fire.
@@mikedupre1923 Folsom Prison Blues is one of two HF covers I don’t like, the other being The Gambler. I can’t put my finger on why but both of those songs just get under my skin in a bad way.
I agree though that hearing a few more before Mayday would increase the intensity of the mind blowing. Maybe some of the mellow stuff like How Great or Go Rest High. Or Some Girls would be a good one to show her more of Chance soloing.
If you want to hear how versatile they can be react to their cover of "Mayday" by Cam.
I have that written down! I was told to wait for that song though and do a few more before that particular song.
@@jessicasopranonotes I appreciate that. If you jump to that cover too soon it might be confusing. Might I suggest their cover of John Mayers song "In the blood" or their very short cover of "Helplessly Hoping". Both are excellent in my opinion.

Mayday is a very good song and it shows what they can really do.

Rob does a great job in the lead on this and they all carry it off with class. Not just a country group. You should catch their new offerings "American Pie" with the original artist Don McLean and "When a man loves a woman". Both are excellent.
I love this talented, handsome group of men. They can do any genre and don't employ gimmicks.
It's crazy how Home Free can take any genre and put their own twist on it while still staying true to the original.
They were actually contestants on The Sing-off and one of the judges was Shawn from Boyz II Men. Shawn would always say how much he loved Austin's voice. "Smooth like butter" he'd say haha

It’s definitely the best showcase of Austin’s vocal ability to date in my opinion. He took it up a few levels and had me wondering why he’d been holding back on us.
Austin Brown also has a unbelievable cover of Unchained Melody. Absolutely awesome.
Also a side note, haven't see you do a Pentatonix reaction in a while, they have released a new album of originals, start with Coffee In Bed, Kevin's beatboxing will blow your mind. Thankyou for your excellent reaction from some who loves music but doesn't have any musical talent.

Something that Home Free always impresses me with is when they "go a cappella" for emphasis, the way they do at 15:32 here. They're _already_ a cappella, for Pete's sake. Impressive.
For pure harmonies check out "Helplessly Hoping." It is my absolute favorite.
For some great harmonies, you might check out "How Great Thou Art," "Helplessly Hoping," and "Auld Lang Syne"

I was not disappointed, great reaction and analysis, Jess! I really like how you pointed out Rob and Austin's ability to put their own sound to the song while keeping it within the spirit of the original. I've heard someone say that great songs can be covered in almost any style because they are foundationally solid. This might be the case with "End of the Road". Thanks for all your hard work and your unique style!
I've been a Home Fry as they say for a while now. I haven't heard anything they have done that I didn't like yet. Another great reaction/analysis and explanation. I always like how you spotlight little parts of a song that might otherwise be overlooked. Have a great day, stay safe and take care.

I love their recently released covers of When a Man Loves a Woman and I Swear. Both are outstanding singing but totally different feels in the videos.
If it hasn't already been mentioned, Shawn Stockman was actually a judge when Home Free won The Sing Off. Even though Boyz II Men sang some acapella songs, this wasn't one of them, and I thought it was actually a good idea for Home Free to do a song that wasn't originally an acapella song. And as usual, they nailed it. 💙

100% agree with everyone that recommends “Helplessly Hoping” it is a harmonic masterpiece! I also recommend to watch their cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” featuring Pentatonix’s former bass Avi Kaplan. This song let’s you see the bottom of Tim’s range. But the others I love recommending is their cover of Cam’s Mayday to see just how diverse these guys really are and I also personally LOVE their “Butts Remix” just to show they can, and do, have fun but that song has a feast of vocal effects that O think you would be one of the only people on RUclips will pick up on!

To hear Austin solo, try "Unchained Melody". For HF, try "Helplessly Hoping", "In the Blood", "Everybody Walkin' This Land" (for production), and perhaps "Do You Hear What I Hear". It is a very deep rabbit hole.
"Helplessly Hoping" has the very best two-voice unison I've ever heard in my life. I'm not a big fan of two-voice unisons in general, because they're either boring--including the one there by Home Free--or painful, but they're technically insanely difficult to do correctly, and Home Free gets all my technical respect for that one.

Rob is actually from Minnesota! The country twang is learned. I think he actually focused on jazz in college.

You're getting lots of HF suggestions, and all are good. "Mayday" is a special case, however. It's very good, but you should wait until you've heard at least 6 of their "normal" songs before listening to it. In order to enjoy it fully, you need to be familiar with all of the guys and their voices. Fortunately, there are LOTS of other great songs in their catalog.

IMO, nothing will ever replace the original magic from hearing Boyz 11 Men sing this masterpiece, & I am so happy that Home Free, was able to keep the original integrity of the song, yet still inject a little of their own magic, allowing us, to fall in love with it, all over again 💕 *I don't believe any other group, other than Home Free, could have pulled this off, & the fact that they are an a Capella group, definitely puts them on a completely different level of skill & talent* 💕 Really enjoyed your informative commentary!

Jess: You are by far the best person I have found on the internet at breaking down vocal videos, and I don't say that lightly. I watched many reactions to this video and you are the only one that even commented on Chance hitting the organ tone in the background. Great pickup. Much respect. I heard it and was really surprised that no one else even commented on it. Same with your reaction to Helplessly Hoping. Your breakdown of the lyrics and the comment you made about the lower register holding the note while the upper register breaking being an musical metaphor for "lost" was fantastic. You hear things that no one else seems to hear. Some I hear before you say it. Others I do not. Loved your analysis, Jess. I don't know how many times I have listened to this song; however, you brought up things I hadn't heard before. I love the expert overview and the appreciation you show to Home Free's performances. I love the way they share the lead in the songs they choose to put to video. I also love that they continued to put out videos even thru the pandemic. I think thru their music they helped a lot of people cope! By the way, you have quite a dynamic and lovely voice yourself!
