    Dawn and Terry sounded so much alike that it is scary at times. The key difference is that Terry has a rounder sound to her voice, especially when she belts. But there are times where I can not tell who was who (Sitting On Heaven's Door, the end section. I can't tell if that's Dawn or Terry ad libbing at the end). It would have been crazy to hear them on one song together as a duet.

      YEA. They sound almost identical in their upper register tones except-- as you said --- Terry's voice is fuller/has more weight & has more vibrato. And her lower notes are more fleshed out & solid than Dawn's. They sound like they're "genetic🧬 sisters in song 🎵 " 😁, the way 2 biological sisters 👩🏿‍🦱👩🏾‍🦱might look 👀 similar in the face with slight differences.

      Terry sounds nothing like Dawn 👀. I saw them at #nkotixtapetour2022 twice this summer. They use Dawn’s background vocals to carry them. Terry doesn’t have what Dawn has. She wants it, but doesn’t have it. Sorry

  • @aseedshop

    Yessss! This is the content I been looking for. Dawn's got such a unique voice, and I agree that it's clear when her vocals are missing from the groups she's been a part of. She adds something special to all the music she touches! Hope she decides to make more things in the future, solo or whatever.

  • @Slaychelle

    EDITED: I now think the whole group are lyric sopranos (Cindy being light-lyric). Dawn's voice is so beautiful. Her vocals on Don't Let Go are truly iconic.

      Terry is a Mezzo-Soprano she sings alto registry in the group
      Maxine is a Mezzo-Soprano she sings low registers in the group.
      Dawn and Cindy sing all soprano and coloratura soprano notes in the group.

      @@chooselove4307Apparently, you don't know anything about Terry Ellis' voice/vocal range? I suggest you look at live videos of her singing, "Don't Go", "Silent Night" live and the live version of "Don't Let Go Love" live on the Rosie O 'Donnell Show in 1997. Dawn has never sung above C#6 nor has Cindy. Terry is the only one in the group that sings in the lyric range up to a F#6 consistently and probably sings a G#6 as her highest. A full lyric soprano has a much fuller rounder sound than a light lyric soprano.

    As far as Dawn's highest falsetto note (in EV) would be on "Part Of Me" during the bridge when they all go higher and higher and higher. Terry is on the ultra top note, but Dawn is right below her (and that note is def higher than a C6), then Cindy, and then Max on the bottom (though she goes ultra high on the ending adlibs herself too). Check that song out...it might be great to ref for Max's vid as well. Just an FYI. But loved this vid and the others. EV is my fave group of all time.

    You're very much welcome. I can see why people love Dawn (I do too), she had a very different voice in the group. It has an edge that made her standout on her parts. It was also kind of noticeable when she left the group (compare performances of EV's Don't Let Go, with and without Dawn and you can hear a major difference). Her voice was integral to this group, just like the rest of the original members. Thank you for commenting.

    As far as I can remember there was not much to work with (her vocals overall did not leave much of an impression outside of Where Ever You Are), but I definitely may need to listen to it again before I do the reduxs for the rest of the group.

    I was going to say something about this eventually. But yeah I agree. Terry doesn't mix (or prefers a chestier mix, I can't tell), so her voice comes off bigger and darker compared to Cindy and Dawn, and that maybe the reason for her slight decline in her overall belting prowess.

    How do u know so much about this stuff?Its very interesting to me, especially with En Vogue being my favorite group of ALL TIME. When u do Terry make sure u get her doing the last verse of TIME GOES ON. She goes up an octave with each verse. The last one she kills

    Thnak you for commenting!
    She does something in Time Goes On? I might have to recheck that song. Anyway, I basically listen to every song they made and look for distinct moments (in each register). And with a group as dynamic, and as vocally diverse as En Vogue (even though Terry and Dawn sound alike to an extent, their approach and style varies drastically). Terry will probably be the longest, because she has the most solos and lead song out of the group.

  • @chooselove4307

    Dawn voice was amazing! I love all the songs she sung lead on. Dawn and Maxine vocals were everything in En Vogue, they haven't had a #1 song and no sex appeal since their departure. They were the funky divas of the group, and most stylish.

      Christopher Willoughby I finally found the song! Thank you for the recommendation. Just listening to it, it sounds tight. As in in her throat. Couldn't it be argued she had the potential to be a Lyric Coloratura Soprano, but didn't have the proper training that Mariah and Debelah had. I don't doubt Light Lyric though. I was just wondering, because based off what she has shown she she fits some of the requirements. But like I said she never had what either Debelah and Mariah had.

    I used that note in the video (it was the harmonized C6 here) thought Dawn was the top note. I also checked a live performance; Dawn was the most audible on that section, and the note was a C6. If Terry is the top then I will have to go check again (I haven't even gotten to her head voice/falsetto yet). Cindy did nothing but a G5 (it will be in her video). Thank you I have Terry Cindy's and possibly a group video left, so stay tuned.

    Oh yeah, I just notied the harmonized part. Cool. Yeah, Dawn is the loudest on that incline, but Terry is the highest (just not as audible), I believe in Part Of Me, Terry has the F6 (if not #), and Dawn has the C6, then Cindy and then Max. Looking forward to your Terry vid, she has such an awesome voice, much like Dawn's in fact, for the longest time I thought "Just Can't Stay Away" was Dawn's song. LOL! Always wished "Love Don't Love You" was Terry and Dawn on lead (in place of Cindy).

    • @Calvin375
      @Calvin375 5 лет назад

      It's Terry on the F6. No other member in the original group can sing that high. However, former replacement member Amanda Cole can really sing notes in that upper register in her voice that rivaled Terry's coloratura notes in E6, F6 and G6 and probably beyond.

  • @JonathanGardnerTV
    @JonathanGardnerTV 11 лет назад +1

    Yes she doesn't have the weight or timbre of a full lyric, it's just that juxtaposed against Cindy's very girlish timbre, Terry's voice sounds bigger than it is.

    Dawn definitely had the least control over her voice. She had a few problems (her biggest was that she tend to get shouty on high notes). I think by the time she came back to En Vogue however, most of them disappeared. I never noticed that, but it would make sense.
