- Hey everybody, I am back with a new episode of She Sangs. This time it is starring En Vogue, which is arguably the best vocal girl group of all time. Maxine's jazzy voice + Cindy's polished voice + Dawn's funky voice + Terry's powerhouse voice = a fierce vocal collaboration. En Vogue's harmonies are unmatched and their superior performing skills set the blueprint for every girl group that followed them (like Destiny's Child, Pussycat Dolls, Little Mix, Sugababes, Spice Girls...heck even the Cheetah Girls lol).
En vogue best live vocal harmonies don't let go, hold on, free your mind, never gonna get it, giving him something he can feel, my lovin, lies Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Dawn Robinson, vocal range.
I believe En Vogue deserves a biopic .......but done the right way .

Omg Maxine's G#5s omg and then that growling. I got a chill OMD. Her tone is sultry, warm and unmistakable. The soul of the group.
I love Cindy's sweet, sweet soprano. I love her effortless melismata so agile and accurate. Always serving vocals with perfect intonation and cute sass
Dawn owned Don't Let Go. Everyone was saaanging on that but her ad libs always give me the most life on that song. Plus she has one of the prettiest head voices you'll ever hear.
TERRY to me has always been the best all rounder. She can go from huge belts with a mezzo quality to effortless coloratura soprano all in the same song and still maintain that crystal clear clarity.
En Vogue really are a VOCAL SUPER GROUP of 4 clearly defined and unique solo vocalists

Janay Holmes finally! I continue to scroll down for a minute to see when someone was going to mention Dawn's voice. no Dawn did not make the group the group was made up of four parts hints for part harmony. each one of those women contributed something special to that group but there's something about Dawn's voice that just stands out. After Dawn left the three sounded good but the four-part harmony was not there! trying to sing the songs that she did lead on, just don't sound the same. Now that both Dawn and Max are gone from the group that's not En Vogue!!!

There used to be a video performance on youtube with Just Maxine and Terry as a duet. I believe Cindy flew back home because her mom was sick or had just passed. Max & Terry carried on. Max & Terry alternated the lead to Hold On. They KILLED IT! Max was hitting those Cindy notes like she originally recorded the lead. Wish someone would repost that video it's a must see.
Yes. I always believed she could've gone toe2toe with Whitney. And you can definitely hear the Teena Marie in her voice. In fact, I think I saw a video of her on here singing "Square Biz."

True but if you listen to that cd closely u will see that they were unable to edit Dawn's parts out so its really a complete EnVogue cd with all 4 members

Yeah what other female group had all the members able to sing different but on par with each other? My fav was Dawn then Terri but I was always able to appreciate Cindy's pop style.

Not only was EnVogue the best femaile vocal group, but there were all so stunning to match. Like black barbie dolls. Comparing the voices is useless because the original 4 had the perfect differences yet combination-- like the author mentioned Max brought soulful jazz, Cindy brought pop classic, Dawn brought funk/alternative soul, and Terry was the fierce balladeer.

My analysis of the voices
Maxine = Very jazzy vocal. You can tell she's jazz trained. Great ear
Cindy = Very high toned chest Soprano. Probably the highest chest range in the group. Excellent control
Terri = WOW! Definitely the POWERHOUSE gospel vocal. She's great. Also had the highest whistle register.
Dawn = she's a hybrid of all the above. Definitely had the best stage presence as well. She can emulate well any quality I listed above. The chameleon

Soprano isn’t chest sir. Soprano is head. Chest would be considered Mezzo or Contralto.
Cindy does have excellent control. Is that something thats natural or from lots of practice.

The best female group of all time!! I never knew Maxine had such range because I only saw her singing the low parts and she can really hit those high notes well. Great vocals by all of the women in the group too.

En Vogue were the epitome of the girl group. Not one group that immediately comes to mind could switch parts at random as easily and as masterfully as these ladies could. They could sing the ABCs to me any day.
i agree envogue was a gr8 group...however i can name 2 girl groups that can give them a run 4 their money...please look up exgirlfriend their harmonies are on point...xscape can also give envogue a run 4 their money

Little Mix are the only girl group out now that have 4 lead vocalists tbh it’s sad there’s not as many girl groups and good ones at that Little Mix are really good they’re worth a listen but these ladies are the GOAT

No matter who has tried, no one has ever been able to put together a group where every single member can be put in the front and shine all areas of leading AND stage presence...and then also be able to fall back and carry the BGVs. Thats a skill. Plus they all were naturally beautiful.

I think what made En Vogue stand out above the rest is their classiness and ability not to over sexualize their look. Too many performers just go straight to that.

Maxine is probably the most versatile singer in the group. She's a trained soprano but she held the bass/bottom of the harmonies down FLAWLESSLY!
Dawn is my favorite cause she just has a voice that sounds like NOBODY else in the world! She emotes straight fierceness in everything!!
Terry is the soul of EV. She's just powerful and smooth and can belt her arse off

Let me tell you, no one could belt like Terry. She had a few hiccups here and there, but when she was ON it, she was ON it. 5:15 - 5:25 was when they were on Oprah and she was clearly SICK and STILL kilteded it!! And those top notes in the chorus of "Part of Me" and the last parts of the National Anthem...yes. And I loved hearing her get into her whistle, especially on "Don't Go"...my lamb.

I’ve met 3 of the 4 ladies (haven’t met Max) and they can blow. Since they broken up, Terry & Cindy are still rocking the group and although they all sound better together, the 2 original can still blow and are looking fly as ever.

YASSSSS Angel! En Vogue was the best female group of all time!!!! 4 different voices with the ability to harmonize and slay a solo. I miss them so much.
They were all they same voice type so it was easier for them.

Keion Rogers no. She was not a CONTRALTO. She is a mezzo soprano aka an alto in choir terms. Nina Simone and Lalah Hathaway are contraltos. They have androgynous voices. Maxine does not have an androgynous voice.
