Just failed this ran through a flex pipe a gasket where the flange connected to the exhaust then to top it off my muffler edges had a small rusted area around the ledge where it was welded....lmfaoooo im praying thats the last leak because i was getting cold start high rpm 1k or so for about 60 secs until the computer could calculate ....but needless to say i need my emissions passsed lol ,after countless other fixes i feel i should of built this car from scatch smdh🤦🏽♂️ . Ordered a purge valve and hoping i dont have to order an evap canister also but i will if need be this video was highly informative . Sealed most small leaks up letting it set and will reapply tommorow another coat ...praying this solves this permany po455 crap code. Will keep posted upon request. Great work and nice vid brother 🙌🏽💯
Never seen this happen to anyone on YT. That is a complicated system. Learned a lot on this one as I finally now realized that the engine vacuum is what creates the tank vacuum through the duty cycle dependent purge valve. I've never had an evap problem on any car I've owned so was never forced to do my homework on the systems. Thanks so much!
To anybody watching this I would certainly give a nod to the tech who worked on this vehicle. It does appear this vehicle has a "filter" (the horizontal one along side the fuel tank filler by the vapor canister-about 4-5 inches long) that supposed to filter the air purged from the canister. I believe this filter is only on certain Sonatas with the PZEV system and can clog up and set false codes for a CCV. The "clog" can come from loose charcoal particles from the canister. Another symptom would be a slow fuel fill. Hyundai is very vague on replacement of this filter and some dealers don't even know it's there. Take if off and try to blow through it-if restricted......replace or simply eliminate filter.
That's crazy I have the same leak lol. I just tapped in to the purge line with a t fitting up front (to smoke it) . It took me a minute to find because I thought it was the hose clamps. It waa so hard to see I wish you would of keep making videos. You have a good way of explaining things in detail. Some of its irrelevant to me but I still watch
Nothing but problems with my customers Sonata. 4 years ago small evap leak turned out to be the vent valve will not shut all the way. A year later small evap leak again. This time was not able to diagnose it with smoke. 1 pressurized the fuel system with 2 psi from my TIG welder and found with soapy water that the canister was leaking where are the driver side mounting bracket bolts threaded into the canister. Anothet year later.....small evap leak. Pressure tested again. Could not find the leak after spraying everything down but would not hold 2 lb of pressure and could smell and hear small leak. Pulled the gas tank down and found two areas they had small cracks in it from when the fuel tank was formed. They had been covered with under coating. Prepared that and now a year later it's back in the shop for a small evap leak. Also please note that after each repair I pressurized the system and tested under vacuum and was able to have it pulled vacuum for at least 5 hours. Both the customer and I are getting tired of this vehicle. I tried many different places to attach smoke machine kiss for each of these diagnosis the smoke machine simply did not work for me.
Just finished basically the same job (except mine was a 2010). You are correct that you can smoke the system from the hose for the purge line. I use a MODIS which does have the ability to shut the vent valve. I wasn't sure when I began where I was going to inject the smoke being no EVAP port. So as I was having coffee, I googled it and enjoyed your REAL LIFE ( or Welcome to my World) video as I tell customers. My canister was also the problem, and is very common on these. They also have a problem on top of the fuel pump which you can access through a cover in the trunk. Thanks for showing how NOT SO EASY some diagnosis can be. I will give Hyundai credit for there EVAP monitor test. Ran it with the MODIS, it passed and ALSO rest the monitor
Well thought out diagnosis. and even pointing out when things aren't working out . (trying to find proper placement for smoke machine) I really dislike evap diag as there are soooooo many possibilities for a small leak . I do allot with Chevy trucks and am very familiar with that set up but every Manufacture is a little different. Keep up the good work ! Thanks for the video !
We just check out the same year and make model. We connected to solenoid in engine compartment. Canister was leaking, but couldn't see smoke. We used soapy water and found bubbles coming from canister at the seam. Were going to lower frame to get canister out instead of messing with fuel lines and hoses.
2009 Hyundai sonata, is a pita to work on, and I feel bad for the person who had to pay for all this great work.. My sonata, it was the gas cap, I didn't tighten it one time when I got gas.
Did you replace the canister? I believe I have the same issue, same code. Ordered a new aux filter, and control valve. Hoping that fixes the issue and I don't have to replace than canister due to the difficulty.
My 2011 sonata 2.0t i barley drive with 59,500 garage kept has the po455 i changed gas cap, purge valve, Canister Vent Valve code came right back after 5 miles down the road what's next that i"m over looking?
Have same P0456 problem with my 2010 Sonata. Bench tested solenoids, both open/close don't stick and hold vacuum/pressure. I hooked up the smoke machine to the hose that goes from the Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid to the vapor canister. Smoke was coming from the vapor canister area. The hose came off very easily I replaced the spring clamp and ran smoke again, didn't see smoke but not 100% if that fixed the problem. So far no CEL but still have a permanent P0456 set don't know how many drive cycles or how to clear it.
You should be able to clear the fault out using a scan tool, it definitely shouldn't be hard faulting as permanent, at least not until the evap monitor has ran it's course.
I’m really surprised how many times I’ve watched a RUclips video and they pinch off a vacuum hose with jagged edge vise grips. Just seems like a good way to tear a good hose. Why not use something forgiving in those gator jaws.
These systems are way over complicated. I have a 2008 sonata with a po 442 and 456 code. Black electrical tape over the light and rescanning every 6 months fixed mine. :)
you are not able to find smoke in Gas Cap is because you have to activate bypass valve or two way valve, two way valve seal the tank side meaning canister to Tank.. if u have activated bypass or two way valve then you should see ur smoke in gas cap. i would appreciate if you can email the training copy if you have to me.. pls let me know.
The Verus treats me pretty well most of the time, and the integrated scope is very handy. A huge benefit is the troubleshooter feature, which saves me HUGE amounts of time. I can usually find key system information through either the troubleshooter or guided component tests, and saves me trips to the laptop to look up information online. I ultimately would like to get an Autel Maxisys to supplement the Verus and cover some areas it doesn't do well.
29 auto what did you do to clean it? I’ve been having this problem for a few years. I just usually hope my check engine light goes off long enough to get an inspection and deal with the gas problem. Just wondering the best way to clean it.
When you go to AutoZone tell them you need an Evap Canister or Charcoal Canister. I’ve been able to get it by telling them that name. Sometimes they don’t have it in stock and they’ll have to order it. PS. I know it’s 7 months later and you’ve probably taken care of it by now... but for future people who run into this comment section I answered it.

I do the end rite before the vent valve pop that off and throw the smoke tube down that.

My sonata, it was the gas cap, I didn't tighten it one time when I got gas.
Can all cars be thoroughly smoke tested from the gas cap location?
great work

From what I found, hose leading to purge valve leaking, cracked but the inner tube at valve had hole!!

my car is having this issue. where are you based?
How much does something like this run?
I’m really surprised how many times I’ve watched a RUclips video and they pinch off a vacuum hose with jagged edge vise grips. Just seems like a good way to tear a good hose. Why not use something forgiving in those gator jaws.
P1229 LPG-relay circuit high. 2010 Hyundai sonata (Korean domestic - liquid petrolum gas). Any suggestion?

what do you mean by black electrical tape over the light?
@@j-silve6249ignoring it basically.
Mama soul Thank you

nice diag do u like using the verus i was thinking of buying one or should i look at other scan tools interested in the 4 chanel scope part of it

my 2010 sonata would not let me fuel had a p0449 code, found the filter was clogged with the black pellets from the canister.
29 auto going through this same issue now...finally replacing the vapor canister after spending money and replacing the purge & vent valve....
22:06 What he has it hooked to is what I took out and cleaned.
29 auto what did you do to clean it? I’ve been having this problem for a few years. I just usually hope my check engine light goes off long enough to get an inspection and deal with the gas problem. Just wondering the best way to clean it.
Took it off and tapped it on the floor until all the black pellets were out, then blew it out with the air hose.
29 auto thanks! I’m going to be working on this next weekend.
what the neam of your diagnosis device and price please
Agree
thanks TD excellent video
Where did you find the part, autozone doesnt know what part I'm talking about niether does oreily.
When you go to AutoZone tell them you need an Evap Canister or Charcoal Canister. I’ve been able to get it by telling them that name. Sometimes they don’t have it in stock and they’ll have to order it.

oh and go for an aftermarket one the oem ones shit out a lot
Purge
Great video but dude enough with the smacking while your speaking, good grief!
he obviously needs to drink more water. nevertheless , good info on these sonatas.
Hyundai sonatas are troublesome to work on.
