Danny Boy is a farewell song from a father saying goodbye to his son as goes off to war. The father is not sure he will be alive when his son returns from the war and if the son returns from the war? It is an okd traditional Irish folksong. Probably the most famous Irish song ever.
I also got a little teary. So many men left their parents in Ireland and emigrated throughout the world and their parents prayed every day that their son would someday return to Ireland even if it was to see where they lay in death. Such a moving story in that song.
My grandma's great grandma came over during the great hunger as child and lived here long enough for my grandmother to know her as a small child. so it would be my great great great grandma. and in her last years there was like a radio show that would come on and have Irish sing alongs and they would always sing Danny Boy and my GGG Grandma would sit inches away from the radio with her hand on it (she was blind in her old age) and bawl her eyes out in grief over all the loved ones and family left behind in Ireland. It made a huge impact on my grandmother and Danny Boy became her favorite songs. Naturally she played it all time in her house and recently it was played as we carried out of the church for her funeral. Its amazing to me the impact and poignancy this song has spanning so many generations.
The first song I had heard by her was over the rainbow it was so beautiful My aunty used to sing it to me as a kid and one day I asked who sang it so she played me the record of all her songs
Let's not forget that Eva was a true musician, Eva was an esteemed guitarist ,one of the greats that left us far to young, one of my favourites is"I know you by Heart " and of course "Songbird " gotta love Eva Cassidy.
My favourite track of Eva’s is her take on “Fields of Gold” (written and originally performed by Sting). It’s gorgeous, and I highly recommend it for your next track from her :)
You're absolutely right about Fields of Gold. My two favorite female singers are Eva Cassidy and Angelina Jordan who is much younger. There is a mashup of the two of them singing Fields of Gold together which I think is stunning. You should check it out.
Yes.... you must hear her version of "What a Wonderful World" --- her death was such a loss. BTW -- "Danny Boy" was a song written by a father to his son who was called to war. The father is assuring him that when he returns, though it could be that the father had died, still he loves and thinks of his son.
My father had a great voice and when he sung this there was not a dry eye including his... His father worked in England on the telephone poles and was away from home (Cork) ... He would only see his dad a few days a year... This song reminded him of this...
Really brilliant reaction! This has song has extra emotional levels for the Irish, as it's played at many of our families' funerals. They played it at my uncle's funeral, so hearing this took me back to that ceremony. This song gave him a beautiful send off. Good bless your soul and R.I.P. my uncle in the hat.
This is a haunting song for me, my mum who was of Irish decent loved this song and it was played on the bagpipes at her funeral. I was told it was written in the early 1900”s and it was a father’s song to his son who was headed off to war. It’s so hauntingly beautiful it gets me every time. Thanks for the memories guys xx
my absolute fave by Eva is “I Know You By Heart”, which I cannot listen to without totally busting out in tears, as it reminds me so much of the times spent with the love of my life before she was murdered in 2003. That song is the most beautiful song i ever heard, but can rarely dare to listen to it. If you do listen Amber, be warned, it will yank the “feels” right outta your heart, and leave you blubbering. Love you Lisa! ❤️❤️❤️😢
Poor Amber.... I just want to give you a big hug. This is an Irish song played mostly are Funerals or Wakes. It is sad but beautiful. I think what I love about you guys most is your honesty and the true feeling we see watching you guys. THANK YOU GUYS!!!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. I've heard this song sung by at least 10 different people, and they are all great, but this one was something truly special.
Eva Cassidy is absolutely perfect for this song! Her voice is extraordinary, but her acoustic guitar on this is nothing short of remarkable too. This is from her album "Imagine". The fiddle player on the album was her younger brother - Dan. Thanks for reviewing this song.
Both "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Time After Time" make me cry every time. "Fields of Gold" is also awesome. Everything Eva touched turned to art.
I had an Irish stepfather, so I got buried with ALL things of The Emerald Isle. I've heard this song before but usually by Irish tenors. But I've NEVER heard it more beautifully sung than this. THANK YOU, Jay and Miss Amber for your reaction to this!
Before she stepped into a recording studio, she paced for an hour before finally entering the studio. The recording engineer thought she might be homeless. She proceeded to record numerous songs in a brief period, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The engineer was blown away by that song, sent a copy quickly to a DJ in London. He was blown away. In his next set he squeezed in Over the Rainbow, put in on the air...and it was a hit overnight. Her version of the song is the bumper music to Britain’s Got Talent.
Probably the most famous of all Irish Folk Song. The song is a message from a parent to their son going off to war. She did a beautiful job. Normaly sung by an Irish Tenor and quite often at Funerals
What an indescribably heart-filling rendition of this song. She was a beautifully evocative singer. I came here from watching your Celtic Women 'You Raise Me Up' video after searching to see if you had done Austin Brown's cover of Danny Boy. Some say the tune is the same, but it really isn't. I think perhaps both are based on the same Irish folk tune. You would love Austin's cover of this song.
Today is March 21, 2022, and I just listened to this version for the first time. Ironically, on this date in 1979, a young boy lost his father! That boy is a man now, and I remember my father was a great man!! Thank you because even though the tears are flowing, I know I will see him one day!!
As an Irishman, my dad use to sing me to sleep with this… when he lost his battle with cancer in 2009, I played this at his wake. Not a dry eye in the church..
I've just found this reaction, Eva had a beautiful voice, another who died young. I've just listened to Elvis singing DANNY BOY and it's beautiful too If you can find time please react to Elvis singing it too, it's so beautiful, you won't regret it. I love watching your reactions, well done...
Her take on BLUES EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN is a soaring tribute to Eva Cassidy. She never aimed for stardom. Eva only wanted to play music her way which was at odds with record company moguls. Just her and the guitar. But it wasn't considered commercial enough to sell. Eva didn't want to be packaged and sold. She wanted to be honest. And she was. And she was also gone to soon.
Never having heard of her and after listening to “Danny Boy” on your reaction channel, I looked up information about Eva Cassidy online. She was found to have melanoma throughout her bones for which nothing could be done. Three months after the diagnosis, she died of the advanced cancer at the age of 33. She left a legacy of beautiful music.
Love Eva Cassidyshe always gets me too.. She was an incredible musician. Simple and true. Her interpretations of some classic well known songs often take an original and just add something extra, something poignant, some extra human dimension to what was up until the point she covered it the quintessential version.. Love her. Nice reaction x love the way you 'listen'
I'm Canadian...My baby sister married a guy in the British military 40 years ago. She said she never missed home(Canada)until they were in a pub on New Years Eve and a band(complete with bagpipes)came in and did this song. This kind of music is as much a part of Eastern Canada as it is in Britain. We were weened on this music. You should do Farewell To Nova Scotia.
One of the truly beautiful female voices. Ironically, she became more well known after she passed away. That's how I discovered her. I bought two of her CD's.
One of those singers that elevate your emotions to new heights. Her passing is a loss to not just her family and loved ones.. but to all of us that appreciate great vocals and talent. RIP Eva.. now singing with the angels.

I love how you guys get to the core of something when you react to it. Spot-on about the song's lyrics. And I agree - there's something about her voice that is strong yet fragile like glass at the same time. I absolutely love her guitar ballads, but maybe when you listen to Eva Cassidy again you'll want a break from having your heart ripped out lol? Don't get me wrong, she is best known (and for good reason) for her acoustic covers (and that's her arranging and playing the guitar too!) but you should also see her incredible GENRE RANGE. She sang rock, gospel, jazz, and all with the same "getting at the core of the song" across all these genres. On top of that, she changed the songs as she sang them, and her phrasing and control of her voice touch each song to its core. When she covers a song, hers sounds like the definitive version. Also read a bio of her online, she was never famous during her lifetime and it makes you really appreciate her. What a loss! ='(
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Danny Boy, the quintessential Irish song, performed by the angelic, late Eva Cassidy is perfection. I'd also recommend Galway Girl written by an American Steve Earle while he lived in Ireland. Performed by Mundy with Sharon Shannon is very upbeat. Thanks for the reaction.
@@hetrodoxly1203 English lyrics from the early 20th century but the "song" is much older, 17th century Irish. There have been many different takes on lyrics over the years, the best known being Last Rose of Summer, from the early 19th century.
@@mikekelly5869 'Danny Boy' the the song was written in London in1913, Fred Frederic Weatherly set it to the music "Londonderry Air". i don't think anyone clicked on this video to listen to the music.
Eva Cassidy is local to my area. What a stunning voice, only heard by many, after she passed so early in her life. 😥. Beautiful reaction. Her "Golden Thread" gospel-like song she hits highs, even high for Eva.
My grandmother's favorite song - I remember calling into a radio station to have them play it for her during a St. Patrick's Day gathering - thanks for the great memory! xox
I've heard this song a thousand times by other artists, but it's the first time I've had tears well up in my eyes. I had never heard Eva's version before. Heart wrenching and beautiful!
So many people have sang this very famous song like, Some of my favorite versions are Andy Williams, Ray Price (my parents played that album all the time), Tom Jones, Elvis, Harry Belafonte, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Johnny Cash, sineade O'Connor, Eric Clapton, Louie Armstrong, Roy Orbison, EVERYBODY sang this song just about. My mom would put that album on & she would dance with my dad in our living room & then when danny boy played he would have me stand on his shoes as we danced around( I was just a kid). He would always dance with me for one or 2 songs if he was dancing with my mom. He was the greatest dad.
Thank you Jay, Amber for introducing me to a voice I had not heard, a name I've barely seen and who has catapulted to the top of my "Lady GOAT List"...with a Bullet!!! Female Friday Fan For Sure!!!
I’m glad to see you showing Eva. You’ve listened to her “soft” songs so you’d definitely be surprised what she can do with the blues. Listen to Stormy Monday!
In my opinion Eva was and still is ( even in Death ) one of the BEST voices to ever grace this earth . When she died part of my heart went with her but her Music lives on to give us all those FEELINGS we long for in her Strong ,Beautiful and simple way. By the way that his her playing the guitar
For me it is the sound of those left behind when so many thousands left Ireland during the famine, knowing that those they left behind may not be there should they ever return. The sad victims of the famine were indeed warmer and sweeter underground then they had been above ground when there was nothing to eat and no coal to burn. Breaks my heart every time.
My personal favorite Eva Cassidy songs are "People Get Ready," "Wade in the Water," and "Wayfaring Stranger." You won't regret any of them. Also, please react to Samantha Fish...I would recommend the song "Either Way I Lose" to get your feet wet. God bless!!
Eva's version of "Fields of Gold" (written by Sting) is Eva at her best! To me, there's a sense of melancholy that floats around her vocals. I wonder if she knew she had untreatable cancer when she recorded some of these songs?
'I Know You By Heart' was on her last album. She was battling cancer at the time when she recorded it. The song deals with the death of a loved one... : (
Who can be prepared for that. I''m glad these recordings were made before she passed. Imagine how popular she would be if she would have lived. She's singing with the angels. Thanks
This was written in 1913. There are various conjectures about the meaning of "Danny Boy". Some interpret the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or participating in the Irish uprising (as suggested by the reference to "pipes calling glen to glen") or emigrating as part of the Irish diaspora
@@georgebarnes8163the Londonderry Air is Irish. English words Irish tune so lets go halvo halvo as we would say as kids if one had sweets & the other hadnt. The Pipes calling was a cry to fight & glen to glen would refer to Iteland or Scotland so perhaps we should go thirdo thirdo. It is tegarded the world over as An Irish song but who cares when you can hear the putity of Eva's voice so deep down in the soul. Slainte leat. which doesnt mean cheers but health to you which I say to you from the bottom of my soul
@@mauraorourke9849 LOL, the Irish would never ever use the term Londonderry, they hate that British city and county. The song Danny Boy is 100% English and has nothing to do with Ireland or the Irish. By the way the term you were looking for is "Slan leat" not Slainte leat.
@@georgebarnes8163 well Im Irish & I used it. Thats what the tune is called probably written after the Ulster Plantation. You are correct we call the city Derry.. ive never known it as anything else. Even across the border its called Derry except for a few diehards. No politics here George because if I start I wont stop. I did not say slan leat because that is goodbye which I never use because its forever. We might want to challenge each other again. I still say Irish air for Danny Boy so its halvo halvo. I wished you health which I meant sincerely
My great-grandmother who was from County Mayo in Ireland used to sing this to my mother when she was a little girl and she told her that the song was basically about families parting forever as so many went off to America and, would, in all probability, never return. She said that their family and friends staying behind actually threw an "American" wake for her family before they left Ireland because it was so like a death to them.
For a different Eva Cassidy experience, check out another live performance at a club called “Pearl’s” with the song,”San Francisco Bay Blues”. Her bluesy acoustic guitar was wonderful and her voice…perfect! I wanted to be able to go back in time and “hush” the patrons who we’re talking through this, and tell them that, one day, they would regret not giving their full attention to this special performer! She was just wonderful!❤️
Eva Cassidy what can you say, there are no words to describe her talent. Her voice and the way she Is interpreted a sing is unmatched. You guys need to listen to her version of Songbird believe me its one you will want to hear over and over. Great choice with Danny Boy heck anything she sings is amazing. RIP Eva you left us way to soon but left us some of the best music ever recorded.
My favorite Eva Cassidy is a bit different style. Another story song called A Penny To My Name. She was so versatile, jazz, folk, rock, country or anything else, which is why she didn't get her big break while she was still with us . The record companies couldn't pigeon hole her, so they just set her aside. It's hard to listen to her without a little sadness, regardless of the song. If you want to hear a really hauntingly beautiful one, check out Tall Trees in Georgia, it is almost entirely acapella and very emotional and obviously sentimental for her.
A few weeks before she passed her friends and fans got together to do a benefit for her to help with Medical bills. She insisted on coming and even sang for them though she had to be helped to the stage and given a stool. The last song she sang was "What a Wonderful World" 6 weeks later she died. RIP a Beautiful gift.
This Beautiful Irish song is often played at funerals❤️❤️

I personally like The Elders' cover of Galway Girl from their live album.
'Danny Boy' is an English song and like many songs of the time sung all over the British isles.
No one anyone with a heart can't love Eva Cassidy. My favourite is How Can I Keep From Singing. Perfect song for her.
One of the best albums by Eva Cassidy is "Live at Blues Alley." Recommended listening.
Yes, and nightbird is also great!
Patrick's Day gathering - thanks for the great memory! xox
OMG ...... "I Know You By Heart" is another tear jerker sung beautifully by the lovely Eva.
ANY Eva Cassidy is so well worth your time. It’s a crying shame her talent wasn’t fully recognized until after her death.
I don't know anyone who learned about Eva by any other way than by word of mouth. Incredible!💜
She sings Fiels of Gold is amazing!
DON"T CRY
Eva's "Blues in the Night" or "Chain of Fools" will have you on your FEET!
Eva's cover of Sting's "Fields of Gold" is a weeper, too. Gets me every time.
I’m glad to see you showing Eva. You’ve listened to her “soft” songs so you’d definitely be surprised what she can do with the blues. Listen to Stormy Monday!
Yes! Love her upbeat version of it
It's a must.
"Hallelujah I Just Love Him So" is a good one too 🥰
She nails Stormy Monday!
The ultimate Irish tearjerker song
It was written by Fredrick Weatherly upon the death of his son and has nothing to do with Ireland.
The music is carrigfergus, an Irish tune added to the English lyrics
This is just Eva playing her guitar and singing at the same time. Pure Beauty in musical form!
Eva Cassidy is incomparable. Please check out her song Had I a Golden Thread. Simply amazing.
WOW!!! Loved this!! New to me!!
Thank you guys!! 👍😊
Thanks for playing Eva Cassidy! I miss her voice. Try Fields of Gold. Wonderful voice .
Eva has to end up on your wall of artists, don't you think? Thanks for your beautiful reaction videos.
Welcome aboard! Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful female vocalist. I had never heard of this female artist before your reaction video.
She also has record jazz, blues, and rock
My favorite Eva Cassidy is a bit different style. Another story song called A Penny To My Name.
She was so versatile, jazz, folk, rock, country or anything else, which is why she didn't get her big break while she was still with us
Eva is a songbird. She was taken before she had a chance to soar. I get teary eyed every time I listen to her. Please visit some of her other songs.
Eva Cassidy was a Goddess. Please react more to her! Pick any song and it will be amazing.
Her cover of Fields of Gold may be the best cover I've ever heard
This is also Eva on the guitar. Not only an incredible voice but guitar talent as well.
Thanks for listening to Eva. She was a beautiful soul and is missed.
