That's not quite correct. Even before Bette was singing torch songs in bath houses, she was a Broadway musical actress. I believe she originated the role of Tzeitl, Tevye's eldest daughter in Fiddler on the Roof with Zero Mostel. A great artist, whether acting or singing.

I couldn’t help noticing Jay say “he” when referring to the song’s subject.. it definitely sounds like a romantic relationship but truth is this is meant to be about a supportive best friend. The song was not originally hers, but her cover was used in her 1988 film Beaches, which follows the lifelong friendship of two women. I highly recommend the movie (mainly to Amber because I know Jay isn’t much of a movie guy lol) - I promise you WILL cry. Great video as always, guys!

This is such a beautiful song, and one that holds a special place in my heart. In 1996, I was going through a rough divorce and my youngest daughter, who was 11 at the time, told me she had a surprise for me in her room. She asked me to sit down, and she sang this song to me. When she was done, she told me not to cry (that didn't happen..there were flood waters) and that I was her hero. Still can't listen to this song without flashing back to that day and the memory it still holds in my heart.

He is still his old let's make everyone laugh. When he went to county jail he told the staff that he had to be on a special diet. They asked him why he thought he should get special treatment. He told them that he was pregnant and was feeding two and that he had to be put in the female dorm. They laughed. When he first met my lady almost 18 years ago the very first thing that he told her was that his dad (me) breastfed him and that I had the best-powdered milk that you would ever taste. A couple of years ago I listened to the song the wind beneath my wings which was my best friend's favorite song who passed away of cancer in 2016 at 54... he meant so much to me for over 30 years... I was listening to it on youtube and thinking of my friend and crying and then I decided to make a comment about how much that song meant to my friend and me and told the story of his death and how I still felt devastated about his passing... This is how your loved ones communicate with you... when I posted that, Bette Midler herself commented and we talked for at least three days on her youtube channel... She was so compassionate, loving and thankful that her song meant that much... It was amazing. It brought chills to me because I knew without a doubt that my friend in the other realm put it together to have Bette and myself speaking, he knew it would help me heal. My best friend Rick was the wind beneath my wings... He always made sure I shined while walking steps behind me and yet he was so much better than I will ever be... I learned more about humility from him because he would put up with individuals I would never put up with in a million years... I try my best to think of the great times we had, but it is so hard to get out of my mind how he suffered before passing away, near the end he had large tummers coming out of his skull, he suffered so much near the end that he was begging for death because of what the chemo did to him... 🥰

Bette Midler was a singer first and created a personality she called "The Divine Miss M". She did stage shows like you might see in Vegas, but started singing in Gay Bathhouses in NYC with Barry Manilow (yes, the famous singer, songwriter, musician) accompanying her. Her shows were legendary! She'd dress up in almost anything and do full on dance routines with a dance troupe and she'd tell risque' jokes, ala Sophie Tucker (aka The Last of the Red Hot Mamas - singer, comedian, actress in first half of 1900's). She named her daughter, Sophie. She blew everyone away with her fabulous voice, great comedic timing, wild stage show and sassy delivery. There's old videos out there and are worth seeing.

Bette Midler, though she has a great voice (and if you watch the We Are the World video again, you'll see Bette in the choir), she's best known as a comedic actress. In 1976 she was nominated for an Oscar for "The Rose", which spawned a hit song of the same name. She was in many big films in the 80s and 90s, such as Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune, Get Shorty, and, of course, Hocus Pocus. Her nickname for decades has been "The Divine Miss M". For your next Bette song, she did a duet with Mick Jagger, a cover of the Rolling Stones' song "Beast of Burden". "From a Distance" is also a classic.

My niece was born with numerous severe birth defects the doctors told us to make funeral arrangements because she would not live out the day. We had them play this song over and over again in the room this song makes me sob. i am sure the nurses were sick of that song but we didn't care. I will always believe that song willed her back she was so so strong and fought so so hard. But the doctor's still said she would die her defects were to great. But she proved them all wrong. We just celebrated her birthday on April the 6th just yesterday she is my entire world i wish to God i had her strength she is amazing after 25 surgeries she is still here. She can't walk so she zooms around in her wheelchair. she was born with club foot, and she is unable to have children etc. after all that she has been through she still smiles no matter how bad things get she keeps going. She is my hero and my person and i am so grateful for her everyday. She keeps me flying even when my own wings refuse to fly.

Such a beautiful song from such a beautiful voice. Bette Midler is truly amazing, and I am so glad to see you guys react to her. I have always loved this song, just as I've always loved the movie for which she recorded it. The movie is called Beaches, and it stars Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. You guys have to watch that!
As for my recommendation this time, I was going to suggest "The Rose," but since you said you've reacted to that already on patreon, I'm going to recommend something else instead. "The Rose" . . . by Conway Twitty. It's the same song as Bette Midler's, but Conway's version brings something new and amazing to the song (and, if I'm going to be honest, as much as I love Bette Midler, I actually like Conway Twitty's version of "The Rose" even more than hers). I have no doubt whatsoever that you guys will both love it.
