As far as I'm concerned Judy's version is the ultimate performance of this song. Not taking anything away from this gifted young lady this is a fantastic cover
@Coastal Co Not necessarily. A lot of artists have songs that they performed first but weren’t written by them including Elton John and especially Elvis. They are still considered originals. I guess if depends on how much influence the performer has on the direction. With Elton John he basically got the lyrics and a vague idea and sang and did the instrumentals around that.
When you learn about her life story you’ll appreciate her gifts, her beautiful performances, even more. She died of cancer at the too young age of 33 & her talent only became known to the multitude of her fans after her untimely death. Fortunately, a few people in the music industry & her family worked to memorialize her beautiful genius for all of us to enjoy! Thank you for Honoring this Angel !
OMG this was so amazing, not only her voice but the way she payed guitar. As a guitar teacher I can say that her guitar playing skills are just as amazing as her voice. Just WOW
Get a therapist bro! Jk, it’s a beautiful song 😊 The songs that get me emotional like that are emotional to begin with and also have a memory tied to them. Not a tear jerker but the most emotional song for me is Mr. Tamborine man by Bob Dylan. I tripped with a friend of mine at my house with a few sober friends over back in high school when I first heard this. This was before we all went off from high school. And that song was just perfect. Always gives me an indescribable feeling of being OK with life.
Anything by Eva is a joy to hear: "Autumn Leaves", "Fields of Gold", "Ain't no Sunshine", "People get ready", and on and on. One of the greatest singers ever, gone way too soon.
She does a great rendition of Sting’s ‘Fields Of Gold’ and also Christine McVie’s ‘Songbird’ which was a huge hit for Fleetwood Mac, Christine was their main songwriter and lead singer at one time.
I would love to see a back-to-back review of Sting’s original Fields of Gold, which was inspired by the landscape around his new house, followed by Eva’s re-work of it. Because she hit it out of the park :-)
I'm 67 years old and FOR ME this is the greatest Masterpiece of music ever sung anywhere. I have heard it 100s of times. I am always touched and blown away!
Her voice is so exceptional that people often fail to notice just how good a guitarist she was as well. A once-in-a-generation talent gone far, far too soon.
Eva Cassidy is a treasure only realized after her passing. I've listened to her hundreds of times and each time am awestruck at the combination of softness and power, attention to detail in every note with impeccable integration between her singing and guitar work.
@@KWayne6756 he may not have said that, however what he did say was that he was territorial of that song, arrogant even, but when he heard her version, he was brought to tears and saddened that her pure voice was gone, and that she didn't live to see the success of her version.
Eva Cassidy sadly passed away when she was only 33. The original is from the movie "The Wizard of Oz" from 1939, sung by Judy Garland, which you should hear. Judy Garland's version is sung not done much faster than this, but it has a full orchestra. You should watch Judy Garland sing it in the scene from the movie.
I cant listen to this version without crying every single time no matter how many times I hear it❤ She left us way too soon when she died of melanoma in 1996 at the age of 33... what a loss❤ Please do more of Eva!!💜🎶🎵💜

Every time I listen to this I'm in tears. Not only is the tone, control and dynamics of her voice jaw dropping, her beautiful and emotional interpretation of the melody and great guitar playing brings it over the top.
Mick Fleetwood tells the story of setting up a meeting for Eva with a record exec in NYC. When he asked her how it went she said "nothing came of it". Turns out they wanted to sign her but they also wanted to make her "more marketable". So glad she stuck by her vision. There's a purity in every one of her recordings that we might never have had the chance to hear if she'd chosen the easy route.
Her voice is so stunning that we often overlook her incredible guitar playing. I'm sure by now since this was two years ago you have discovered other Eva songs. They are all just as superb as this one. They instantly become Eva songs and are untouchable after you hear her version of whatever. There never was and never will be another Eva Cassidy. Haunting! I think God called her home early for a command performance!
I actually choked up when this popped into my in inbox. I honestly also had a quick sob. This is a cover from a lady that died too young from cancer. This is live and simply gorgeous it defies words. You have to try What a Wonderful World next, Songbird, Fields of Gold. I always cry when I hear her perfect soulful voice Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️
Love love love Eva Cassidy. Her Danny Boy will make you cry like a baby. Her Autumn Leaves is very beautiful as well. Any Eva song is beautiful. What a tragic loss that she passed at such a young age. Thanks so much for this video!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I ment to say that in my humble opinion her version of Autumn Leaves is the best I've ever heard and I've heard a lot of them. It's part of the American song book.
Absolutely sublime. This always gets me watery eyed - specially as she died so very young (at 33 of melanoma). She could've sung the phone book and sounded heavenly. My favourites of hers are probably: It Doesn't Matter Anymore, Way Beyond the Blue, How Can I Keep From Singing, Fields of Gold, Penny to My Name.
Does her phrasing bother you? I cannot stand it. I like her voice though. Edit: I just scrolled down and saw that she had passed away. I have never heard of her. May she rest in peace.

Her legend grows with each successive year. If you react to more Eva, I love her version of Autumn Leaves especially and also Fields of Gold.
This was on my baby girl’s playlist of songs I played at bedtime when she was an infant. Along with Pink Floyd , Kenny Rodgers And other such soothing music. But Eva has my heart on this song I just melt every time
I saw a live club show where she did a wonderful version of Dancing Cheek to Cheek. Her cover of Simon & Garfunkel's American Tune is hauntingly beautiful. Mick Fleetwood (founder & drummer of Fleetwood Mac) was a big supporter of hers. So sad she died so young.
@@janicepopham2352 So cool! There were so many little jazz places ,,,oh it was so nice to go hear greatly talented people who seemed to just drop in from another star.
This was playing in my brothers hospital room when he took his last breath. He himself was a phenomenal musician and played a saxophone version of Over the Rainbow that was phenomenal. What a way to leave this earth….you couldn’t go in a more peaceful way.
So glad you found one of my *very favorites*...so heartbreaking she is no longer with us....you have 2 check out more of her music...she's so versatile..."You Take My Breath Away" another great song by Eva. ..my sweet husband and I always play it, on our wedding anniversary..."Time After Time" also a must listen.."Fields of Gold" makes my heart hurt, knowing she died so young... this is "the" song I want when I go, for true! stay safe, karen (tx)
Judy owns this song eva took it over and IZ was there to take over, what we have is three different people signing the same song in their own special way, nothing can be taken away from all three, they are gone now. But this song will forever keep their memory alive. Rest in peace Judy, eva&IZ
The original song was done by Judy Garland in the movie The Wizard of oz in the 1930s. Eva Cassidy did this cover in the 1990s. She died very young at 33 of melanoma cancer. Her cover of Sting's Field of Gold is phenomenal.
Her phrasing and license with the melody lines has a jazz sensibilty . This makes her individuality even more impressive , in addition to her stunning voice.
OH, YOU DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy, I can't even tell you!!! I'm a teacher and I've been stuck at home quarantining with COVID since Tuesday. I'm vaxxed and I was double-masked, but I still got it during our first week back. This has truly made my day!!!! Love y'all!!!!!
I was right there with you Amber. Eva Cassidy's voice is like a massage for the soul - it gets in there deep, works out all the stress and knots, leaving you feeling loose limbed and relaxed. Another epic vocal talent we lost too soon. RiP.
She lived so very short in time .... on this earth she touched with HER PERFECT VOCAL RANGE, TIMBRE & SWEETNESS .... one can only hear on recordings ..... her death was so very sad. GBjj
I've loved this woman for so long. Her control and vocal range is outrageous. Love this arrangement of a classic too. RIP Eva....you are greatly missed.
It was 5 years beyond her passing, before she gained national attention. This version, by most, is considered the GOAT standard. She and her sister loved the "Oz" book series. They also inspired her to draw images of fairies. 😢✌
Her voice takes me to a place of pure contentment and joy. I can still remember the moment I heard her sing for the first time. I was driving when I heard this played on the radio and I had to pull over bc I couldn’t see through my tears. It felt like I was hearing the song for the very first time and absolutely took my breath away. Some of my favorites are You Take My Breath Away, Time After Time, Fields of Gold, Cheek to Cheek, Stormy Monday and Kathys Song.
Thank you so so much for reacting to Eva!! She was something very special. Not only is her tone lovely, but her phrasing is genius. Died way too young. R.I.P. Every song she ever recorded is amazing, but one of my other favorites of hers is Autumn Leaves. Fields of Gold is also gorgeous.
This is absolutely my favorite rendition of this classic song. !!!! Please listen to her version of "Fields of Gold" - no one sings it better. It takes my breath away.
Eva Cassidy displays extraordinary sensitivity in rendering this iconic song, with an impeccable voice, remarkable phrasing and stunning musicianship. She is an brilliant artist in the truest sense of the word.
Actress Judy Garland was the first to sing this in 1939's Wizard of Oz. The song was written for the movie. (I personally think it's the BEST rendition.)
Whichever version (Judy, Eva, or Izzie) that I'm currently listening to is absolutely the best one ever. They are each so different and beautiful in their own way.
Thank you! Thank You! Thank You! for reacting to this. I have been trying to give this consummate artist visibility for so long! Anything she does is incredible! Especially Fields of Gold, Time after Time, and Autumn Leaves!
Eva’s voice is transcendently gorgeous. Glad you’ve given her a listen today. Also wishing you all the very best right now and hoping you deliver soon and safely. I feel for you, Amber!
She sings and elevates it beyond to a spiritual level. Heaven. I'm 82. I lost my brother a little over a year and a half ago and he was 78 and he was my pal for call those years. I cry and I'm not ashamed every time I listen to this song as sung by Eva. He never heard this version but I know he would have loved it. I like to think he actually is in heaven.
I want to add some more angelic voices to the list of female fridays: Alannis Morisette - Uninvited Sarah McLachlan - In the arms of an angel Aimee Mann - Wise up This one is beautiful. Great pick!
This gave me goosebumps and her voice is incredible!! I love the way she took the song into her own and made it her own. Just a beautiful rendition of the original!! I could listen to her voice all day long!!
You need to listen to the Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Brotha IZ) and his version of Somwhere Over the Rainbow. His voice is beyond angelic and he plays the Ukulele. Over a billion views (yes a billion) its that good. He is a Hawaiian legend. RIP IZ.
IZ totally reinvented this classic as his own. After hearing him live, many other beautiful renditions fall short for me, including Ms. Eva’s. She performs the song well, but it doesn’t leave the “performed” realm into genuine emotional transfer, that Israel Kamakavivo ‘ole, as Eva’s seems contrived rather than feeling the song for me-thus performance is all I’m left with.
Fields of gold and songbird are amazing and will touch you just as much as this song. Eva Cassidy is my all time favorite female vocalist, her voice touches you like no one else can.
Eva is one of my city's favorite daughters. We love her and miss her in Washington,D.C. Please also play some of her duets with Chuck Brown who is the father of Go-Go music. R.I.P. to a true angel.
Eva [yes…long E] shot to multi-platinum stardom when this song was played on a UK radio station shortly after she died of cancer in the USA. Soon after, all of her limited collection of recordings skyrocketed up music charts. You won’t find a song by her that isn’t absolutely fantastic! They are all incredibly soulful. My faves are her versions of “Tennessee Waltz” and “Fields of Gold”.
The UK radio station was BBC Radio 2. Their breakfast show DJ the late Terry Wogan kept raving about it, and constantly played it. As he was the most listened DJ in Europe, as Radio 2 is the most listened radio station in Europe, this may have been why Eve Cassidy ended up with two posthumous number 1 albums in the UK.
She IS an angel now. I believe it was later in the same year of this performance that she passed away from cancer. Knowing that just overwhelms me when I hear/watch this. Thank you so much for checking this out.
Eva was only on this earth for a short amount of time but left it thousands of times better for her presence. Anything Eva sang was beyond awesome.

Her legend grows with each successive year. If you react to more Eva, I love her version of Autumn Leaves especially and also Fields of Gold.
Thank you for the recommendation. I had never heard of Eva. I'm so sorry she is no longer alive.
I've played her version of Autumn Leaves so many times. It gets me every time.
The Cellar Door? Are u from DC?
@@joycewalbert1413 Not from DC, but visiting a friend at Georgetown & he took me to her show. I was thunderstruck .... she was so good.
@@janicepopham2352 So cool! There were so many little jazz places ,,,oh it was so nice to go hear greatly talented people who seemed to just drop in from another star.
OMG! Lucky, lucky you!
So much talent in this world!
If you ever get a chance to hear this song by "Iz", you will not be disappointed. A soulful voice, a ukulele and that is it.
His version is absolutely beautiful!!!✌❤
Israel Kamakawiwoʻole definitely gave the song a wonderful new sound.
Love Eva Cassidy, but the Hawaiian version by Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole is the definitive rendition, just achingly beautiful
Yep, my favorite version by far is by IZ
YES!!!! Definitely do this one too!!!
This was playing in my brothers hospital room when he took his last breath. He himself was a phenomenal musician and played a saxophone version of Over the Rainbow that was phenomenal. What a way to leave this earth….you couldn’t go in a more peaceful way.
I think your brother and Eva are both angels in heaven now. Beautiful
👍
Thank you!!!!! Wait till you hear more. Her voice is spectacular.
She sings Sting'a song "Fields Of Gold." Sting has said on numerous occasions "it's her song now."
For me this is the best performance I have ever seen of any song of any artist. It's almost divine.
Yes Amber. Can't help yourself crying a tear. I'm with you.
Judy owns this song eva took it over and IZ was there to take over, what we have is three different people signing the same song in their own special way, nothing can be taken away from all three, they are gone now. But this song will forever keep their memory alive. Rest in peace Judy, eva&IZ
Yes! Finally!! Eva is the best. Her cover of fields of gold is great too. Anything off of the live at blues alley concert is 🔥
Her ability to improvise and know exactly how long to hold her notes is legendary. Her tone….
The original song was done by Judy Garland in the movie The Wizard of oz in the 1930s. Eva Cassidy did this cover in the 1990s. She died very young at 33 of melanoma cancer. Her cover of Sting's Field of Gold is phenomenal.
Sting said it was better than his version
Her phrasing and license with the melody lines has a jazz sensibilty . This makes her individuality even more impressive , in addition to her stunning voice.
OH, YOU DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy, I can't even tell you!!! I'm a teacher and I've been stuck at home quarantining with COVID since Tuesday. I'm vaxxed and I was double-masked, but I still got it during our first week back. This has truly made my day!!!! Love y'all!!!!!
Hope you feel better they make my day too,
Hope you get better. Check out this awesome version ruclips.net/video/V1bFr2SWP1I/видео.html
So happy you found her… maybe the best and sweetest voice ever. Love your honest response.
GBjj
She has so many great covers: "Fields of Gold", "Early Morning Rain", "What a Wonderful World", etc.
Ain't No Sunshine...
I've loved this woman for so long. Her control and vocal range is outrageous. Love this arrangement of a classic too. RIP Eva....you are greatly missed.
Why ain’t I heard of her. Loved it. Especially, her clean picking. That was exceptional.
You have to listen to her song "Songbird" one of the most beautiful songs of all time.
Absolutely!!!
Eva always makes me go to emotional places with her renditions. I can only think of how sad it was that we lost her at such a young age.
If you aren't crying at the end of this song, you best go to a doctor fast! Rest in peace, angel!
I really dont tear up that much but this one got me , eva u have a perfect voice ty and ty rob squad .
My favourite female singer. Everything she did was amazing. Please react to more of her. RIP Eva.
I totally agree. This is pretty but not Judy Garland.
They are so different that they can’t really be compared…Eva’s version is essentially a lullaby.
So do I. You have to do something really special to take Judy off the top tier for her version of this song and no one has done it yet for me.
Agreed. Judy's was the best and it's shocking she had such a powerful voice at only 16.
I want to add some more angelic voices to the list of female fridays:
Alannis Morisette - Uninvited
Sarah McLachlan - In the arms of an angel
Aimee Mann - Wise up
This one is beautiful. Great pick!
you mentioned Aimee Mann so I LOVE YOU
Yes, Uninvited!
Aimee Mann, yes please. Although my favouite is Save Me or Deathly.
Nah
This gave me goosebumps and her voice is incredible!! I love the way she took the song into her own and made it her own. Just a beautiful rendition of the original!! I could listen to her voice all day long!!
You need to listen to the Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Brotha IZ) and his version of Somwhere Over the Rainbow. His voice is beyond angelic and he plays the Ukulele. Over a billion views (yes a billion) its that good. He is a Hawaiian legend. RIP IZ.
100% just beautiful!
@@pattyestrada6 this version they are listening to now is good, IZ version is out of this world!
Agree! I love Eva Cassidy, but the Iz version is my favorite.
Must must must hear Izzy!!!
He was such a beautiful soul!!! 😥💓💓
Eva Cassidy's cover of "Songbird" is truly gorgeous. You'd love it.
So beautiful!! 💛💚💙💙
you need to listen to more of this amazing lady. pure voice .
Eva is one of my city's favorite daughters. We love her and miss her in Washington,D.C. Please also play some of her duets with Chuck Brown who is the father of Go-Go music. R.I.P. to a true angel.
Shrike by Hozier
Bowie's finest!
One of my all time favorite voices!! Congratulations on experiencing Eva!!
Never fails to move me to tears. Some people just have that gift
This always makes me cry,her voice is so incredible. RIP Eva
I got chills just listening to her voice!! What a beautiful voice!! Soothing
This should definitely go on Luca's lullaby playlist. Heck, it's going on my lullaby playlist.
Her guitar skills are other-worldly.
Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear her sing.
Beautiful reaction. I was crying along with y'all. Not only is she an amazing singer, she plays guitar superbly.
She IS an angel now. I believe it was later in the same year of this performance that she passed away from cancer. Knowing that just overwhelms me when I hear/watch this. Thank you so much for checking this out.
