No prob man! I grew up playing Metallica so I enjoyed the nostalgia working on this video. It was also a fun challenge to try and match their HUGE tone with budget gear... To think I spent thousands on Marshalls, Mesas, and Peaveys back in the day to try and get these tones. Now I'm as close as I've ever been with a $400 modeler. Music technology is getting scary good and it's only going to get better!
Thanks man! Double and quad tracking helps to make a simple tone sound thicker but the BIG difference is how well it is EQ'd to sit in the mix. Tones that sound super thick and full alone usually fight for the same frequencies once other instruments are introduced to the mix and all you get is a muddy mess. Always make sure your guitars sound great in the mix and don't worry so much about how they sound alone. Thanks for the comment. Rock on!
@Himi Tsu - RUclips won't let me reply to your comment for some reason... You need to download and install X-Edit from Digitech's website. With the RP1000 connected to your PC via USB and the X-Edit software, you just have to open the presets in X-Edit and then save them on your RP.
Am I the only one that thinks the only reason people don't like St. Anger is because it's by Metallica. Like if it was made by a different band, more people would like it. Just an opinion. Not saying at all that I think it's great just not horrible (except the snare)
Zach Wood that is actually a really good argument I actually love St. Anger but if I were by another people would probably expect it more. Coming for Metallica it was kind of a shock for them to do something like that.
Thanks for the feedback! The pass filters are not on the RP. I applied them in post. It is pretty common practice in the studio and I just made a habit out of it. Most people don't notice much of a difference without them but to my ears it helps the guitars sit much better in the mix.
Thanks for watching! I wanted to continue making videos but there were some technical issues. Now I just don't have the time anymore, but when I do I'll probably make more.

Where's Garage Inc. 1st disc (best Metallica guitar tone imho) and Death Magnetic, man? And Beyond Magnetic? All of them sound spot on except RTL and MOP. Anyway, great job, dude!!
Exact EQ settings depend heavily on your pickups but here's 2 things you could try... 1) Metal Amp - Gain 5-8, Bass 6-8, Mid 2-4, Treble 5-7, Volume as needed. 2) Spinal Puppet Amp - Gain 5-8, Bass 5-7, Mid to taste (4-6 IMO; It doesn't actually increase/decrease the mids, it sweeps the mid-scoop through different frequencies), Treble 5-7, Volume as needed. I never had my gain or bass above 5 or 6 when I owned L6 gear. I found it very gain and bass heavy to begin with. Good luck!
Thanks! No IR's, just stock amps/cabs in the RP1000. All info is in the description, including download links. PM me if you need me to write the settings out. Rock on!
Thanks! That is true, it is a very versatile unit. The purpose of my videos is to demonstrate the direct sound capabilities using the unit alone. That's why I don't couple it with a preamp or use post-processing to polish the sound.
you can here the difference between kill em all-ride the lightning and the other albums.. they replaced marshalls with mesa boogie mark 2c+ .. but in death magnetic they use mixed amps, james uses triaxis(for 2c+ tone) and diezel VH4, kirk hammett uses triaxis(for 2c+) and randall.. does the digitech preset that mix?
I've seen some comments about loading them into the RP500 and other Digitech models, you can't simply save and load as you can with the RP1000 but you can just manually load all the settings into an RP500 to get the same exact tone. Experimenting with some different layer tracks really gets fun with these tones. In particular playing around with the Black tone and the Mark IV and IIC models
The RP1000 doesn't have a "presence" option like some of the earlier digitech units. Check the link to the Gear Page in the description for a write-up of each preset. If you have a different RP, you will have to play around with the settings for your needs.
I'm not sure you can open them with the RP500, but the RP500 shares the same effects and amp models so you might be able to build the same presets if you follow the instructions in the link in the description.
Thanks. I don't know of any other videos but if you click the link in the description, it leads to a thread that has an outline of how I did this. You could use the same procedure on the GT-100.
The quality of tone that comes out of the gear someone owns has less to do with the gear itself and more to do with that person's ability to understand it and use it effectively. This is especially true with digital gear. So, whatever you purchase, be sure you take the time to read everything you can about it and experiment with it. Your efforts will be worth it!
Man, extremely close to the original tones, congratulations!! this video only encourage me to buy one of the digitechs... maybe RP355... Its a pity that here in brazil, a RP355 is costing about US$350, and the RP1000 about US$650...
That was beautiful. The AJFA and Reload tones were DEAD ON. The others were really really really close, apart from Master of Puppets which sounded a bit off. But still man, that was great. One thing that really amazed to me was the effect of the double/quad-tracking. I would NEVER think that the solo tones would lead to the meaty, chunky power when double-tracked. I mean, they all _appeared_ to sound pretty crappy, especially the Fuel one. Live and learn, I suppose. Rock on!
His MOP tone got pretty close to The Law by Exhorder. The albums that were recorded to 2” analog tape is always going to be a huge challenge to recreate in the digital domain as tape imparts a low-mid warmth and softness on the highs even tape plugins can’t do.
Omg!!! Untill yesterday I was a doubt about this multi effect...Almost bougth the Gt 100...but, after see your video, I have 100% shure that RP 1000 are better....love it. Thanks, man and hello from Brazil!
Great job! I really like your tones and find them easy to use in other effects units as well as the digitech. For example I made all the presets in my Boss GT-100 and really liked them. Do you know if there are any other youtube videos like this for other bands/metal bands? Id love to try copying some more signature tones and find videos like these really help.
You won't be able to download and use the presets, but the RP355 shares many of the same amp models so you might be able to build similar presets if you follow the instructions in the link in the description.
Thanks man! FYI, the amp modelling is basically the same between all the RP units. The only difference is the amount of models available and other features. Don't forget to look into other units as well. Lots of great stuff out there.
Thanks! Make sure you try both before you decide. The RP1000 suits my needs because of a number of features not available on the L6 stuff. But, if tone is your driving factor, the raw amp models are much better with the newer L6 stuff.
The RP1000 is beyond Metalica and is quite capable of covering everything except Buckethead because that requires Line 6 FM4 and Bass Synth Wah. really good mate, next thing to do is use a spectrum analyzer in collaboration with "Riff Station" and figure out the final guitar EQ curve , apply it and you'll NAIL it !

Yeah you are right. Ive been using a Klark Teknik DN60 analyser for years for this exact reason and approach to recreating tones for covers gigs. It is impressive the increasing quality on the lower end kit these days. Nice job!
Justice needed more bass and less mids. All the cut through stuff came from a ton of highs and volume. James said that his Justice tone lacked body and mids were a "no-no" and at the time it was all about a ton of lows and highs.
the thing is they used a setup similar to kill em all: alot of mids low bass and high treble, and then they used a graphic eq to scoop the mids. hence why the tone can really cut through still

Would be cool, but I'll be honest... These videos are 5+ years old and I haven't really made any new ones for a reason. Just no time for this kind of stuff anymore. :(
it's 232323 for sure on the album, most people do the shortcut 222222 including metallica when they play it live. I suspect kirk wouldn't be able to play it tightly with james if they did it the proper way.
Hell yeah!!!! This is awesome. Youre a tone genius man. Given that youre using a limited amount of efx in the rp (compared to vst plusins which you have plenty to choose from), you nailed it like shit!! This is wicked man i love it.
Thanks! The RPs are great units for their price. You should check out the Zoom G5 as well. Similar price and feature set as the RP500 but newer technology.
These are all pretty close. Well done. Did you start by using the corresponding amp models to what they used for each album, or did you simply use whatever sounded right?
Thanks. I tried to pick amp/cab/fx models that they used. Here's a full write-up of what I did. www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?p=13201338 Further down the page I broke down each preset.
Jonathan Beals It sure is a great unit. Even with all my high-end tube heads (Marshall JVM, Mesa Dual Rectifier, Fenders, Randalls and so on) I always find myself coming back to the RP1000 into an ADA power amp for my live sound.
I have the Rp500 and I love it sounds great threw an amp or mixer I will admit its a bit warmer through a mixer but I love the tones and dude you did a great job in this vid
From your vids I noticed you have an iPad. Maybe take a look at the iPB-10 as well as the others. The amp modeling is improved over the RP1000 and it works great with the iPad.
You should do more videos about the Digitech. They will be very helpfull! Whatever... thanks a lot for your videos! Greettings from Mexico! Sorry my English Sucks! xD
That sounded great, I'm considering picking up this pedal for my EVH 5153 50w tube amp. I only have the 4 button EVH pedal board it came with. No other pedals at all. I actually play Guitar modeling through Amplitube 3 more than I play the EVH. Mostly since I like the Modeling amps presets of amplitube. Makes it much easier. I bet I would play the shit out of my EVH if I had this pedal board. Hard to figure all the shit out though.
Wow somebody actually playing Dyers Eve
One of my favorite tunes back in the day.
Justice's tone was perfect imo.
meh, sounded like a pile of fuzz imo
Justice tone is naturally fuzzy haha.
***** justice tone is low gain and lots of highs though, and there was too much gain and not enough highs in this setup. puppets was more accurate
Holy crap, the black album tone sounds awesome
man i want the load/reload distorion so badly
Mesa Boogie Triaxis + TC Electronic G Major + a good 6L6 loaded power amp.
The digitech rp1000 is the best processor I ever used. No compromises on the sound I was looking to get with it.
Unreal job man. You got those tones damn near perfect.
No prob man! I grew up playing Metallica so I enjoyed the nostalgia working on this video. It was also a fun challenge to try and match their HUGE tone with budget gear... If you add a little bit of bass in the MOP and RTL presets it would be spot on just like the others.
You nailed it. Absolutely great. To anyone wondering how to get this town, you will prolly need to get an overdrive pedal for this distortion.
conconexplosion tone*
only kirk used an overdrive pedal as a clean boost, james relied on his right hand and his amp.
conconexplosion what are you trying to say
Exact EQ settings depend heavily on your pickups but here's 2 things you could try...

Fucking sweet! I'm doing a Metallica tribute show and I happen to own an RP-1000! Thank you so much! These tones will add heaps to the sound.
You'll need to tweak them for your own set up, but they should provide a decent starting point. Good luck with the show!
The MoP one sounded like the real AJFA and the AJFA one sounded just like a mean, digital fuzz
That was beautiful.
The AJFA and Reload tones were DEAD ON. The others were really really really close, apart from Master of Puppets which sounded a bit off. But still man, that was great.

Some of those tones were really really good! The St. Anger tone was impressive! Super cool. I just nabbed a RP1000 of ebay last night.....glad I did!
The RP1000 is beyond Metalica and is quite capable of covering everything except Buckethead because that requires Line 6 FM4 and Bass Synth Wah.

You're really nailing those tones on the head. Great job and real good sound
Watching this now, I wish you had done a cover of 2x4.
That riff is so catchy
awesome :D
really good mate, next thing to do is use a spectrum analyzer in collaboration with "Riff Station" and figure out the final guitar EQ curve , apply it and you'll NAIL it !

Man what a great video and player, those tones are truly brutal! \,,/
Thanks man!
Wow, I can actually hear the bass on "And Justice for All" in your tracks.
lol If you're ever bored, look up "...And Jason For All". It is a re-mixed version of the entire album with the bass parts boosted up to an audible level.
Jonathan Beals How can you boost "mute", though?
austinfailz lol
+Jonathan Beals and justice for jason is not jasons real tracks as there is 3 or 4 tracks that dont have the real bass track that jason newsted recorded. and justice for jason is the creator of the video just playing along with his bass
Infinity I think only 4-5 stems of the real bass tracks are available.
great playing and great patches! will definitely try em out
I prefer as little gain as is necessary. Too much gain washes away the clarity of the note and the dynamic control of your picking hand. This is especially true when using previous generation digital gear running direct (like in this video).
sounds fucking amazing
wow that was a fast reply lol. I started to search on the download site, and it says you can open up the download and switchit from the 1000 to any model and vis versa. If that works, awesome. If not, I can always test it out myself ;D
Thanks for your reply, btw. And keep up the awesome guitar work!
I bet your English is much better than my Portuguese! Rock on!
I'm in love with your tones. Hell of a job man!
On my list!
That's the way I played it when I was in a Metallica tribute band and that's how they play it live so it's good enough for me.
Man I wish... I've actually made a few videos since this one but for some reason, ever since I moved, RUclips won't accept my uploads.
Thanks, man...Maybe I can test Pod Hd 500 and the new fender mustang floor in the next weekend. But Rp 1000 are the number one yet.
Thanks man and hello from Canada! If you can, test both before you make a final decision on what to buy. Rock on in Brazil!
Good job on dialing those in!
I've been trying to make a parkway drive tone and a breakdown of sanity tone on my rp 1000 and cant quite get it to where I want it. Do you think you could give me some pointers or possibly make a demo video for those?! Your metallica tones are dead on btw! awesome job!
Thanks for the video. Favorited
Very nice!! The Black album tone really sounds great through my setup...I see you have some requests so how about some various VH tones?? Nice work!
Great job, man. You got tone skills. I love my RP1000 and my RP355.
Very very impressive tones and playing :D
Great job man!
Amazing - you should do full covers of these songs!
Could we get a megadeth rust in peace and KIMB tones
Would be cool, but I'll be honest... These videos are 5+ years old and I haven't really made any new ones for a reason. Just no time for this kind of stuff anymore. :(
Ps: if you find any english problem when I wrote...
Hm... do Load and Reload have different tones? I've never really noticed, lol. Very nice tones either way though.
I was as surprised as you are when I first noticed. Thanks!
it's 232323 for sure on the album, most people do the shortcut 222222 including metallica when they play it live. I suspect kirk wouldn't be able to play it tightly with james if they did it the proper way.
Fantastic!
Thanks! Ageed regarding MOP. Worst one out of the set. I just didn't spend enough time on it, and I used WAY too much chorus...
Cool. You learn something new every day.
I'm pretty sure it is essentially all the same, just that the RP1000 has many more switches and routing options.
Hell yeah!!!! This is awesome. Youre a tone genius man. Given that youre using a limited amount of efx in the rp (compared to vst plusins which you have plenty to choose from), you nailed it like shit!! This is wicked man i love it.
Dude awesome man! thank u so much for going through with this!
great JOB! Cool to see you from Ottawa! Im from Hull!
Im looking for the rp 500...cant find it on kijiji...;(
Thanks! The RPs are great units for their price. You should check out the Zoom G5 as well. Similar price and feature set as the RP500 but newer technology.
Yea but what I like about the
rp Is all those amp models!!
These are all pretty close. Well done. Did you start by using the corresponding amp models to what they used for each album, or did you simply use whatever sounded right?
Thanks. I tried to pick amp/cab/fx models that they used. Here's a full write-up of what I did.

Further down the page I broke down each preset.
Jonathan Beals It sure is a great unit. Even with all my high-end tube heads (Marshall JVM, Mesa Dual Rectifier, Fenders, Randalls and so on) I always find myself coming back to the RP1000 into an ADA power amp for my live sound.
great stuff dude
I have the Rp500 and I love it sounds great threw an amp or mixer I will admit its a bit warmer through a mixer but I love the tones and dude you did a great job in this vid
From your vids I noticed you have an iPad. Maybe take a look at the iPB-10 as well as the others. The amp modeling is improved over the RP1000 and it works great with the iPad.
Great to hear!
Thanks man! VSTs are great for recording but I can't take them on stage with me so I like to get the most out of my gear without them.
Fucking nailed the Justice tone
great tones
Evgeiniy Samoilov+ Are you from bulgaria?
Koki Kokoian no, actually I'm from USSR))
great playing and tones, dude
Very Nice Metal Toneage!
Thanks man!
