leerobbo92 I met the guy at my former Music School in France. Believe it or not but when I came to greet him, he bent over to say hello lol, so I told him that i'm an immense, huge fan of his music, he bent over even more and didn't know what to say so he said "i'm just so grateful" he almost turned red lmao. I was like "dude, I'm supposed to say i'm grateful for your music, i'm the one supposed to bend over, or even to KNEE in front o you, not the opposite, cut the shit !" he laughed and added something like "i'll never get used to that" (don't remember well it was 6 years ago). Fuckin' love the guy. I'm so proud that he signed my guitar and his album (I didn't have the album with me so I bought it a second time at the school's music shop to get it signed lol. You can't buy enough of his music. know that (and after we asked he politely confirmed) he ain't makin' much out of his musical career, so don't download his shit !)
humble and a great guitarist.. love it One of the best things I like about him is tone.. I hate modern shredders tones they all sound like processed cheese... I know he uses some serious modern gear but doesn't Over do it ...
"When I've learned to play it properly" "I'm still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't" Dude stfu you're amazing and everything you're doing is working
Guthrie, you're simply amazing. I've been playing fretless bass for 30 years and I wouldn't even attempt to play a fretless guitar with anyone watching. You make it look so easy!
I love this guy. He can bring gods-nectar music out of a guitar while being as relaxed and happy as a child playing with a new set of Lego bricks. A flow of honey for my ears and heart.
I always wanted to play guitar growing up, but wasn't allowed. Now as a 25 year old I'm finally learning guitar for the first time. This video makes me desperately want to get better because this looks like so much fun.
Not only is he a master of the guitar, Guthrie Govan is also a master of the English language. Any sound this man makes, music or voice, is totally enjoyable.
JUSTTTT Oh, I thought that you meant Bob Ross painted trees and Guthrie Govan plays guitars which are made of wood which comes from trees. I've never heard Bob Ross play the guitar so I couldn't possibly comment on his musical voicing. Plus, he died of Hodgkins Lymphoma. Not really nice talking the piss out of him when he gifted the world paintings of alien trees and he was taken from us so young. Shame on you. Tut tut...
Paulo Marconi ...and other 4 idiots used that thumb down thing...I don't really get what's not to like in this video maybe are just jealous! I agree with you he really is amazing!
The humbleness of this man is inspiring, It is inspiring that a man as accomplished and experienced as him still considers himself a "beginner" and has "alot to learn"
If Guthrie wasn't famous for his singularly amazing guitar playing, he would probably be known for being one of the most well-spoken and wonderfully insightful people on earth.
Guthrie is this century messiah. I agree with Haddock, you should definetely check his work with The Aristocrats, his Erotic Cakes CD, and his lessons and interviews here in YT. Best Wishes.
When I was at university Guthrie was a guitar teacher/lecturer there and I only found out AFTER I had finished!!! ;o( he's undoubtedly one of the best guitar teachers of our time in addition to being such a dude! in another life perhaps..
guthrie said "I hope to make another video like this, in about 10 years when ive learned how to play it properly." such a great player and academics as well still humble. deserves professor called he is.
I apologize for trying to make a funny. I'm quite in tune with the fact that my joke may not have been completely original seeing as I have seen it many times before but I thought it was an appropriate time to make said joke again for the sake of humor among my fellow musicians who are used to fretted instruments. Although at the same time I do not consider myself completely ignorant to the fretless instrument. Yes, I understand that these pieces of metal that are long the fretboard are not needed to indicate frets but I stress the point that I was trying to make some people who may have not seen the "11111111111" joke laugh and find humor in my comment. Sorry to have offended you good sir.
This is one of the best demos of anything ever made. I'm amazed at Guthrie. He is an awesome player, a great teacher and one of the best speakers in the music world. He is brilliant, he is funny, he is humble, and there's a lot to learn from listening him talk and play. I don't think there has ever been a great musician as smart as he is. Great players usually don't have very interesting things to say, and I could listen to him talk for hours.
THIS IS THE FUTURE OF GUITARS I BELIEVE. WE MIGHT NEED TO PAINT FRETS THOUGH FOR BEGINNERS HELP BUT HAVING A LOWEST ACTION AND FREEDOM OF NOTES IS A BIG BONUS.
Ill see you in 10 years when i have learned how to play it -Guthrie Govan (The dose some Incredible fingerwork) Pssst Guthrie ? Your playing it swell my friend.
God, is this actually Ian Anderson on the outside of a reverse time machine? LoL!!! His delivery, his sense of humor, even the SOUND of his voice sounds exactly like the man wrongly known by many clueless Americans as 'Oh yeah, that guy Jethro Tull!!' Heh heh . . . .
I just made a fretless neck. I pulled the frets carefully then I cut some maple veneers to match the radius of the finger board then I glued them into the fret slots. I finished by sanding it down nice of smooth. It looks quite nice with a rosewood fingerboard.
I played viola for a decade, and I have to say that anyone who is willing to face the headaches of intonation on a guitar deserves props. You have to be incredibly skilled, but in the end it does free you of many of the limitations that come with frets. Vibrato definitely sounds better when you don't have to bend the string
I know this is a rather old post but hopefully you still get reactions. You have a brilliant way of getting ideas across, belittling yourself, the guitar, the unicorn that gives gold milk et al. Either you've sussed the fretless and made the sound your own, or you're still relying on that comforting step every now and again.....after 5 years. Thanks for your demos of kit and more importantly your music. You are a real tonic Guthrie...keep on keeping on m8.
fretless doesn't sound good on acoustic without a pickup!! but we are beginning to use it in replacing of the Oud in Middle eastern music (mainly, Turkish and Arabic)
it just goes to show how accurate guthrie is take a listen to rob chappers playing a home made fret less guitar, (they removed the frets and filled in,the slots) its hilarious, so Guthrie, your a god !!!
This is certainly one of the best product demo videos I have seen. Thank you for demonstrating this product in a "real world" view. Guthrie's skills show the many possibilities for use with this guitar as well some of it's limitations and it's specifics.
In the future they'll be guitars with no frets OR strings, then a few years after that there won't even be a neck or body, they'll call it the guitarless guitar.
This guy is fantastic. I bet he could grab a tennis racket and make it sound like a Strat. Clearly he is born for what he is doing. Way cool. Finally something else than just playing fast. I bet Mr. Jeff Beck is fingering one of those right at this moment...and wishing he was thirty years younger!
if there was a world guitarist federation that ranks all of guitarist around the world. simply, Mr. Guthrie would become one of the best guitarist in the world. :)
This guy is probably the most incredible guitarist. Legit, of all time. Look at that fucking right hand technique. That takes years of meticulous practice... So incredible.
Great. I just replaced my eight-string with a nine-string, after trading in the seven-string that replaced my six-string, and now they tell me I'm still not hardcorez because my guitar has frets, like for babies!
Guthries closing comment, "when I learn to play it properly" well Guthrie you probably play it better than 99% of all other guitar players on the planet hehe
To anyone who thinks they couldnt play one, just trying playing your guitar with your eyes closed. If your familiar enough with your instrument chances are you will be able to play almost anything without looking. Same thing applies for this.
That is amazing. It would not only make you a better player, but it eliminates the need for a tremolo bar. Bending strings isn't required and requires less force to produce the same result.. it's over all a slicker sound. I'm sold. I want one.
+goodvibrato That's true. but when I think of fretless instruments I don't really think of chords being played... arpeggios, scales, modes... chords not so much. I have no doubt it can be done, but you are correct in that it would be very challenging. no doubt playing on this would sharpen your ears.
For anyone looking for another reference for fretless guitar, I believe Gabriel from Consider the Source plays a fretless neck a lot - and he's incredible at it.
The drummer in my band plays in another band, called Genevieve, and the one guitarist uses a custom built fretless guitar. They're an experimental metal band, and fretless guitar actually works really well for their style.
If you are doing your own build you can also use marquetry to show fret locations. In my case I am using 6 pointed stars. The top point starts at center nut, the bottom point centers fret 2, fret 1 is across the middle of the star, the other four points of the star create lines straight across on the quarter tones. Line up 6 of these to cover the octave. While the shapes of the star squish at the shoulder and elongate towards the peghead, this pattern allows marking 24 tones per octave - perfect for maqam playing.
i don´t like Guthrie. not because he is´nt good at playing guitar. it´s because he is a fucking genius and i will never, ever be able to play like this
The ebow with the fretless guitar makes for an interesting sound. I also like how a solo can sound like a combination of shred and slide guitar with the absence of frets. I'll bet this axe would come in handy for playing Indian ragas.
Uzzwick G yes. and my view is always "a thing is a thing" and trying to convince someone that the slides sound like bends is just misplaced. they don't. stop selling it as if they do. sell it for what it IS. Much better. No one cares about bends or slides when they hear a piece. It's just about whether it moves ya or not. I'd love to have one but it'd really just be a curiosity for me. My chords would suck. hahaha I would not be a happy camper.
Terrific playing Guthrie. I wish you could have spent more time on playing chords. It seems to me that if you get the finger positions correct (within the fret) that the chord should sound normal, with only a few exceptions. Great video and cool guitar.
Since I build 4 or 3 string frettless guitars out of broken skateboards and other stuff.. just to start learning to play from the intuitive side before playing standard guitar, not many good opinions herd. Thanks for a great and encouraging video!
"I'm Guthrie Govan, guitarist in the UK"
Understatement of the century.
from* the UK
***** Oh shit, that quote means something completely different now. That changes everything. Thank you for blowing my mind.
leerobbo92 guthrie is excessively humble. such a great person.
leerobbo92 I met the guy at my former Music School in France. "I'm still learning"
+Fxgamer its a worrying quote for the rest of us mere mortals!
+Fxgamer He said that to make us feel good with our tinnylittlenonplayingaveragehumanbeings :´)
He better be, sounds really out of tune
+Fxgamer His intonation is actually kinda wonky.
+Mat Loyal it's not out of tune, but if you are off the fret mark by a few mm, you're flat or sharp. He's remarkably on point, with very few "misses".
"When I've learned to play it properly"
"I'm still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't"
Dude stfu you're amazing and everything you're doing is working
+AdequateGaming my musician boss once told me - only the greatest of musicians are modest
Well, he is way better on a fretless guitar now (see /watch?v=Bg_6CWcJqNM at 48:00, or 1:54:45)
Guthrie, you're simply amazing. I've been playing fretless bass for 30 years and I wouldn't even attempt to play a fretless guitar with anyone watching. You make it look so easy!
Says, "I'm still learning". Plays it like he invented it.
😆
He's always so humble
"What I'm brandishing before you is a rather ODD looking instrument made by French people."
What a guy.
I love this guy. He can bring gods-nectar music out of a guitar while being as relaxed and happy as a child playing with a new set of Lego bricks. A flow of honey for my ears and heart.
Dude's got a relaxing fucking voice
I haven't ever heard him fucking. I'm sure he would have a very relaxing voice while fucking.
Fuck yeah
I always wanted to play guitar growing up, but wasn't allowed. Now as a 25 year old I'm finally learning guitar for the first time. This video makes me desperately want to get better because this looks like so much fun.
Not allowed?
yes, as in my parents thought a guitar would be 'too noisy'
Parents should support you when you have musical talent.
Such a great teacher and explainer of concepts
Not only is he a master of the guitar, Guthrie Govan is also a master of the English language. Any sound this man makes, music or voice, is totally enjoyable.
This dude is a MONSTER. I feel ignorant for not knowing of him.
We all did
Nice! I love the sound of pinch harmonics while sliding
Righttttt haha sounds so awesome
6:12 This guitar works very well played "slide style". Some of the licks played by Guthrie here are utterly sublime
you're the bob ross of guitars
+JUSTTTT just(ttt) what I was thinking XP
Tavros Nitram I see what you did there ;)
Bob Ross was good at painting trees that don't exist
Guthrie is good at playing guitar
I see what you're getting at! That's genius btw!
fredo gumbo they both have such soothing voices
Guthrie is the musical version of Bob Ross ahahah
JUSTTTT Oh, I thought that you meant Bob Ross painted trees and Guthrie Govan plays guitars which are made of wood which comes from trees. 127 dislike?!? How?!? He is just amazing and has a lot of things to "tell" on the guitar! Just great!!!
Paulo Marconi Thanks Paulo
Paulo Marconi ...and other 4 idiots used that thumb down thing...I don't really get what's not to like in this video maybe are just jealous! I agree with you he really is amazing!
I also don't understand dislikes, i guess they are robots, not humans :) Great sound and playing.
+alexlanza7&9 ANY video will get dislikes, doesn't matter what it is. The ratio is what matters!
+Krassz I know that, you're right, it's just that this is so amazing! :)
I'm as impressed with his intonation as with the instrument
"The fact that there is fretlessnes"
The humbleness of this man is inspiring, It is inspiring that a man as accomplished and experienced as him still considers himself a "beginner" and has "alot to learn"
Humility
Part of the tone of a fretless, at least for basses, is the buzz. The "muah" tone is entirely buzz. Just a really smooth buzz. I love it.
If Guthrie wasn't famous for his singularly amazing guitar playing, he would probably be known for being one of the most well-spoken and wonderfully insightful people on earth.
that guitar player is incredible
Thats Guthrie Govan, he is amazing! Check out his work, you won't regret it :)
Guthrie is this century messiah. I agree with Haddock, you should definetely check his work with The Aristocrats, his Erotic Cakes CD, and his lessons and interviews here in YT. Best Wishes.
A reincarnation of Frank Zappa

What are the tabs?
You are welcome.

only guthrie can completely replace bends with slides and still sound good
10:35 LOL, sounds like Donald having a stomachache

What a legendary guitar player. Give that man a stick and a shoelace and he will make it sound great.
but... he has a professional guitar there, you're saying that like he played on a rubber band
It's always the player. You can play a spoon if you have rhythm.
Guthrie missed his calling when he didn't become a books-on-audio reader...
Fretlessness
I know this is a rather old post but hopefully you still get reactions. You have a brilliant way of getting ideas across, belittling yourself, the guitar, the unicorn that gives gold milk et al. its allmost been 10 years... i cant wait for the next video
fretless doesn't sound good on acoustic without a pickup!!

When I learn how to play it properly he says as he starts making that guitar his bitch haha.
it just goes to show how accurate guthrie is take a listen to rob chappers playing a home made fret less guitar, (they removed the frets and filled in,the slots) its hilarious, so Guthrie, your a god !!!
I don't think Chappers realised he had to think as if his fingers were frets.
ThatGuyOnCoke He didn't. I think Lee Anderton had to tell him "wait try where the frets would normally be" or something along those lines.
This is certainly one of the best product demo videos I have seen. Thank you for demonstrating this product in a "real world" view. Guthrie's skills show the many possibilities for use with this guitar as well some of it's limitations and it's specifics.
My guitar (bass guitar) teacher used to jam with Guthrie at jazz jams in Chelmsford (England)! So cool!
Guthrie even busting out Steve Miller Band's The Joker at 4:39 without even knowing it.....I think.
My thoughts exactly
Common mistake: it's actually R2-D2 from Star Wars.
In the future they'll be guitars with no frets OR strings, then a few years after that there won't even be a neck or body, they'll call it the guitarless guitar.
+Super Kyle loool
it already is a thing, it's called the "Air Guitar."
And they use their own mouth as the natural amp for the guitar
+Super Kyle WOW!!! Pure comedy GOLD!!!! :/
+Super Kyle Kitara has no strings. Just buttons. RUclips it.
If you guys are into this guitar check out 9.11 by Bumblefoot. It has fretless guitar all over it and it's a GREAT album.
Fab. As expressive as a mini moog with bends and vibrato. What a talented chap. Remember him from lesson on guitarist mag cd. "Guthrie here". Fab.
Are you god?
***** He just might be!
+Ian Mignone He is probably Satan.
***** naa he's jesus
+Ian Mignone A Rock God
A masturbating god
I don't know if it's the booze talking, but the "one giant fret" cracked me up
Jeff Beck would probably do well from this but then again he would have to retire his whammy bar which has made his sound so similar. Great stuff.
That slightly sharp/flat tone it gives off sense its a fretless guitar really makes a unique and amazing sound :)
This is one of the coolest guys I have ever seen
He shows a lot of Jeff Beck influence. Beautiful playing.
the first tune GG is soloing over are the «brush with the blues»-harmonies, from JB.
Well ... it's been 10 years, where is the new video?
if there was a world guitarist federation that ranks all of guitarist around the world. simply, Mr. Guthrie would become one of the best guitarist in the world. :)
i said "one of the best" not "the best" so there are many great guitarist beside him :)
This guy is probably the most incredible guitarist. Legit, of all time. Look at that fucking right hand technique. That takes years of meticulous practice... So incredible.
that solo he plays at the end of the video is just so badass!
Great. I just replaced my eight-string with a nine-string, after trading in the seven-string that replaced my six-string, and now they tell me I'm still not hardcorez because my guitar has frets, like for babies!
The correct term is "training wheels for sissies" :'D
You are a sissy boy.
is that jeff beck brush with blues backing track?
The Hendrix of his generation.
Almost 10 years now. I'm looking forward to the next video!
Awesome playing as usual and I love the different tones he gets on the fret-less with the altered technique for bending strings.
Guthries closing comment, "when I learn to play it properly" well Guthrie you probably play it better than 99% of all other guitar players on the planet hehe
He's not playing a fretless instrument so people will be like "Whoa, look, he's playing fretless".. You fucks. Who cares if there are dots?
-_- It gives a smoother and warmer sound. It's not about looks....*facepalm*
As well as frees him from chromatic limitations.. I'm aware of what a fretless instrument is. As well as its functions. Lol
Jordan Lombardo
fretless does look cool though lol
To anyone who thinks they couldnt play one, just trying playing your guitar with your eyes closed. If your familiar enough with your instrument chances are you will be able to play almost anything without looking.
Same thing applies for this.
It still has fret markers, so I'm pretty sure if you can play a guitar with your eyes open, you could play a fretless guitar.
The only thing you would need to learn / work on is intonation and pitch accuracy, just like you wouldve when learning how to bend on a normal guitar
That is amazing. It would not only make you a better player, but it eliminates the need for a tremolo bar. Bending strings isn't required and requires less force to produce the same result.. it's over all a slicker sound. I'm sold. I want one.
+Tracker Buckmann Harder to play basic chords though.
+goodvibrato That's true. but when I think of fretless instruments I don't really think of chords being played... arpeggios, scales, modes... chords not so much.
I have no doubt it can be done, but you are correct in that it would be very challenging.
no doubt playing on this would sharpen your ears.
+Tracker Buckmann And bends would be VERY difficult, but this guitar definitely has it's place.
bluesboynate you don't really need bends, though as he demonstrated. Even the vibrato is played more in the same fashion as you would play a violin.
Sliding doesn't quite sound the same as vibrato, but it serves the same purpose.
For anyone looking for another reference for fretless guitar, I believe Gabriel from Consider the Source plays a fretless neck a lot - and he's incredible at it.
8:00 sounds like Star Wars episode 3 at the Jedi temple
Oh shit, that guitar would destroy my self-esteem in like 3 seconds
Now what about power chords and drop tuning power chords?
Like butter
I'd like to try drop D tuning on one.
Evolution of the electric guitar. Going back to the traditional fretless to go forward. Great stuff
I love that only does he play the guitar he explains everything about it, going through how its used etc. Gotta love Guthrie
Imagine this guitar with a sustainiac sistem.
Do they have this in 9 string?
Umm... I was joking.
LMAO while ill with flu. Thx!
Joke, yeah, but they have them out there.
Pancake Studios Yep.
The Prop9 Fretless Surfboard. Available in propane and propane accessories.
Fretlessness is the coolest word.. :P
5:03 fills me with a sense of hopelessness that makes me realize I may as well just quit trying to play the guitar and maybe try crochet instead
Nice playing and a very thoughtful demonstration.
Thanks from a fellow musician in Vienna, Scott
n0 fr0ts ftw
He's not bad but he really should make a video in a few years when he gets some practice
Fretbuzz eliminated!
The drummer in my band plays in another band, called Genevieve, and the one guitarist uses a custom built fretless guitar. They're an experimental metal band, and fretless guitar actually works really well for their style.
If you are doing your own build you can also use marquetry to show fret locations. In my case I am using 6 pointed stars. i don´t like Guthrie. not because he is´nt good at playing guitar. it´s because he is a fucking genius and i will never, ever be able to play like this
Interesting how "smooth" guitar can sound.
not at all....Guthrie actually disappoints.....
Am I the only one that hears a lot of Jeff Beck stylings?
JManBanshee The backing track was basically "Brush with the Blues" by Jeff Beck.
+ErebosGR are british people allowed to play blues?
I adore guitarists who swing line that way and has such rich melody
The ebow with the fretless guitar makes for an interesting sound. I also like how a solo can sound like a combination of shred and slide guitar with the absence of frets. I'll bet this axe would come in handy for playing Indian ragas.
I can imagine people buying this trying to recreate what Guthrie is doing. Not gonna happen.
wikichris but we can try :D
Also, none of the "bends" sound like bends. they sound like a slide guitar. Just saying. Sounds nice but doesn't sound like a real string bend.
All a bend does is make the tone higher. So does a slide. Its not a bend. But theyre basically the same
Nunyo Biznes They make for different sounding tones though
Uzzwick G yes. and my view is always "a thing is a thing" and trying to convince someone that the slides sound like bends is just misplaced. they don't. stop selling it as if they do. sell it for what it IS. It's slideless slide guitar. I bet someone will start bending the strings though.
Glissando
dear santa.....
Terrific playing Guthrie. I wish you could have spent more time on playing chords. It seems to me that if you get the finger positions correct (within the fret) that the chord should sound normal, with only a few exceptions. Great video and cool guitar.

Your guitar has no frets, but it does the job with one nut.

im not really a Govan fan but man i could listen to him play this thing all day!
fantastic!
