leerobbo92 I met the guy at my former Music School in France. Believe it or not but when I came to greet him, he bent over to say hello lol, so I told him that i'm an immense, huge fan of his music, he bent over even more and didn't know what to say so he said "i'm just so grateful" he almost turned red lmao. I was like "dude, I'm supposed to say i'm grateful for your music, i'm the one supposed to bend over, or even to KNEE in front o you, not the opposite, cut the shit !" he laughed and added something like "i'll never get used to that" (don't remember well it was 6 years ago). Fuckin' love the guy. I'm so proud that he signed my guitar and his album (I didn't have the album with me so I bought it a second time at the school's music shop to get it signed lol. You can't buy enough of his music. know that (and after we asked he politely confirmed) he ain't makin' much out of his musical career, so don't download his shit !)

humble and a great guitarist.. love it One of the best things I like about him is tone.. I hate modern shredders tones they all sound like processed cheese... I know he uses some serious modern gear but doesn't Over do it ...

I've never heard Bob Ross play the guitar so I couldn't possibly comment on his musical voicing. Plus, he died of Hodgkins Lymphoma. Not really nice talking the piss out of him when he gifted the world paintings of alien trees and he was taken from us so young. Shame on you. Tut tut...

I apologize for trying to make a funny. I'm quite in tune with the fact that my joke may not have been completely original seeing as I have seen it many times before but I thought it was an appropriate time to make said joke again for the sake of humor among my fellow musicians who are used to fretted instruments. Although at the same time I do not consider myself completely ignorant to the fretless instrument. Yes, I understand that these pieces of metal that are long the fretboard are not needed to indicate frets but I stress the point that I was trying to make some people who may have not seen the "11111111111" joke laugh and find humor in my comment. Sorry to have offended you good sir.

This is one of the best demos of anything ever made. I'm amazed at Guthrie. He is an awesome player, a great teacher and one of the best speakers in the music world. He is brilliant, he is funny, he is humble, and there's a lot to learn from listening him talk and play. I don't think there has ever been a great musician as smart as he is. Great players usually don't have very interesting things to say, and I could listen to him talk for hours.

I just made a fretless neck. I pulled the frets carefully then I cut some maple veneers to match the radius of the finger board then I glued them into the fret slots. I finished by sanding it down nice of smooth. It looks quite nice with a rosewood fingerboard.

I played viola for a decade, and I have to say that anyone who is willing to face the headaches of intonation on a guitar deserves props. You have to be incredibly skilled, but in the end it does free you of many of the limitations that come with frets. Vibrato definitely sounds better when you don't have to bend the string

I know this is a rather old post but hopefully you still get reactions. You have a brilliant way of getting ideas across, belittling yourself, the guitar, the unicorn that gives gold milk et al. Either you've sussed the fretless and made the sound your own, or you're still relying on that comforting step every now and again.....after 5 years. Thanks for your demos of kit and more importantly your music. You are a real tonic Guthrie...keep on keeping on m8.

+goodvibrato That's true. but when I think of fretless instruments I don't really think of chords being played... arpeggios, scales, modes... chords not so much.
I have no doubt it can be done, but you are correct in that it would be very challenging.
no doubt playing on this would sharpen your ears.

+Tracker Buckmann And bends would be VERY difficult, but this guitar definitely has it's place.

bluesboynate you don't really need bends, though as he demonstrated. Even the vibrato is played more in the same fashion as you would play a violin.

Sliding doesn't quite sound the same as vibrato, but it serves the same purpose.

For anyone looking for another reference for fretless guitar, I believe Gabriel from Consider the Source plays a fretless neck a lot - and he's incredible at it.

The drummer in my band plays in another band, called Genevieve, and the one guitarist uses a custom built fretless guitar. They're an experimental metal band, and fretless guitar actually works really well for their style.

If you are doing your own build you can also use marquetry to show fret locations. In my case I am using 6 pointed stars. The top point starts at center nut, the bottom point centers fret 2, fret 1 is across the middle of the star, the other four points of the star create lines straight across on the quarter tones. Line up 6 of these to cover the octave. While the shapes of the star squish at the shoulder and elongate towards the peghead, this pattern allows marking 24 tones per octave - perfect for maqam playing.

The ebow with the fretless guitar makes for an interesting sound. I also like how a solo can sound like a combination of shred and slide guitar with the absence of frets. I'll bet this axe would come in handy for playing Indian ragas.

Also, none of the "bends" sound like bends. they sound like a slide guitar. Just saying. Sounds nice but doesn't sound like a real string bend.

Uzzwick G yes. and my view is always "a thing is a thing" and trying to convince someone that the slides sound like bends is just misplaced. they don't. stop selling it as if they do. sell it for what it IS. Much better. No one cares about bends or slides when they hear a piece. It's just about whether it moves ya or not. I'd love to have one but it'd really just be a curiosity for me. My chords would suck. hahaha I would not be a happy camper.

Terrific playing Guthrie. I wish you could have spent more time on playing chords. It seems to me that if you get the finger positions correct (within the fret) that the chord should sound normal, with only a few exceptions. Great video and cool guitar.
