  • Today we join these Dutch paramedics on route from the UMC hospital in Amsterdam to a hospital in Haarlem, a 26 kilometer trip. They are driving a mobile intensive care unit. This special ambulance is equipped with the same technology as a standard hospital intensive care unit. This way a patient can be transported between hospitals while still receiving all the medical treatment that is required. We start of in the south part of Amsterdam from where we'll be taking the A9 highway in the direction of Haarlem.

Nice to see my hometown getting featured here! Haarlem (namesake of Harlem in New York) is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland. It is the second biggest city of that province, after Amsterdam. Haarlem is situated at the northern edge of the Randstad, one of the more populated metropolitan areas in Europe; it is also part of the Amsterdam metropolitan area. Haarlem had a population of 162,543 in 2021.

At first I was like - which other case needs those bikers escort assistance more than MICU ambulance with patient on board? I was surprised at first that this one doesn't have any escort. But given the way the ambulance did go, it really wasnt necessary thanks to the perfect discipline of other drivers.

For 20 years I drove Emergency Service Vehicles, usually as a single unit, occasionally as part of an Emergency Convey and on two rare occasions with an 8 Motorcycle Police Escort.
Generally all motorists are extremely well behaved when it comes to interacting with vehicles travelling under Lights and Sirens, but as with most things in life there are the exceptions, who consider their convenience more important than anyone else’s safety.

i think he was a douche, others went to the right to clear the lane for the ambulance (like you should do) and he kept riding in that empty lane.
i think he saw it as a nice opportunity to make his trip a little quicker.
he had plenty of opportunities to get out of the way.

Emergency service and Hospital Care is way better in Belgium than in the Netherland, possible that a city like Amsterdam has lesser active ambulances than a small town in Germany or Belgium. The MUG-System in Belgium is the best.

Problem in Belgium: The Roads are Crap. Time is of the essence, so, no not better because it takes too long. And seriously, Antwerp and Brussel are a pain to drive through, the behaviour of Belgium motorists are as bad as in France.

Response time out of the big cities is longer in the Netherlands. Still mostly within the time standards that are set (I believe 15 minutes or something).

interesting comment, sure he moved eventually but he caused the ambulance to have to slow considerably and given the type of ambulance that causes delays in getting to their destination.
You act like it was you driving the Merc
That black Merc should have moved aside as soon as he saw the ambulance but instead to he cruised along for a full minute and 40 seconds taking advantage of the clear lane left by the people that pulled over like they were supposed to do and ultimately got in the way and slowed the ambulance down.
The Merc driver was a dick and if you think he did nothing wrong then so are you.
