Hi Danny ,I was the proud owner of your Rickenbacker ,I sold it to tony who then passed it on to you ,i bought it from a bankruptcy auction some years ago and Gordy from Rudy had played it but I can't confirm if Mickey would have ever used it ,it did come from an auction in England and was property of Kenny Jones estate at a time so I'm sure there's a lot of history behind it ,and if I could have put more proof behind it I probably would still own it ,hope this helps a bit ,ps undertones where and still are a great band along with SLF ,,regards pete
Danny, your talent is far deeper than maybe the vid shorts have shown. Nice to see you finally coming out from under the bushel. The Undertones are still performing and their songs are timeless.
I always think of the Undertones and the Buzzcocks as similar bands. Neither would be considered punk now, but I remember when punk wasn't defined by such a narrow vision. They are both punk bands to their core. Both could write a catchy tune and thoughtful lyrics that spoke to young people at the time (And I should imagine still do today). Great attempt to capture the spirit of the band. The Undertones were vital to the whole of Northern Ireland and opened the door for so many bands and musicians from there. It's good to see Fergal Sharkey still close to his punk roots. If river and waterway activism and caring about your environment isn't punk, I don't know what is.
The Undertones and The Buzzcocks crystalized what would become Punk Pop. I was a Kid at the time both were about in their original form. Unlike most music I loved at the time, I never fell out of love and fell in love again with their music, I always loved it.
I didn't realise how closely the Undertones' and the Buzzocks' melodic, upbeat garage band style has been imitated by the modern UK indie and the USA Alt-Rock scenes.
Love this video and love the Undertones. I always tried (and failed) to recreate that snare and kick sound on my own recordings. Not to mention the guitar tone from that album. Incredible stuff.
Brilliant stuff Danny, big love for the undertones. I was a little nipper when they hit big, all the other punk bands were a bit scary but Jimmy JImmy was the talk of the playground when they did it on top of the pops. Was blown away when I rediscovered them in my teens. So many great songs.
Nice one Danny! I love The Undertones, especially 'It's Gonna Happen.' which I'm convinced I remember being played as an eight year old when it came out in 1981...keep up the good work mate 👍🏼
Great review and also great band! I remember digging through my pop's record collection after finding an old record player in the trash and seeing them. They look liked a bunch of dorks with cut off bellbottoms, red docs and knitted sweaters. After hearing them though I grabbed a pair of bellbottoms cut them at the shins and went searching for some red docs.
I could not agree more. They were first rate players with great and, often really funny songs, and Fergal was the icing on the cake. Brilliant band. John Peel knew a goodun when he saw them.
I was watching a video earlier and, as I read the comments, I saw this from some random dude and I wrote it down... "Punk isn't about using your brain. It's about using your heart to make music, just like the Blues."
Yes they are! Brilliant stuff Danny, this 65 year old enjoyed your article very much, I loved them then and I love them still. My favourite tracks are too numerous to mention but 'Let's Talk About Girls' and 'You've Got My Number' are totally riffalicious. It's also worth a shout to say how completely brilliant 'That Petrol Emotion' were. For me, absolutely one of the best bands in the late 80's and the 90's, especially "End of the Millenium Psychosis Blues'. 😁
I used to live on the border between Holmfirth & Scholes. Glorious countryside in a house that I literally helped to build, which led to a career in Project Management. I hope you enjoyed the gig 😊
I'd never heard The Undertones until Bob Dylan played "Wednesday Week" on one of his radio show episodes. I immediately introduced that song to my bandmates, and we still often perform it. I've been a fan of their music ever since, and I agree that they're an underrated band.
I have a friend who grew up in Denmark and as a kid loved the song "I'm Terry the Lobster", didn't know it was "Alternative Ulster" until she was well into her 20s
They were looking back almost a 1960s garage punk band, later even bringing in a farfisa organ sound. First band I ever saw. I ripped their first lp sleeve off the wall of Tiffanys Coventry and got Feargal's autograph the rest of the band scurried past me before I could ask anyone else. The only autograph I EVER asked for.
Wednesday Week was the first song I'd heard by them (bought the single when it was still fairly new just cause I liked the cover art lol). Still my favorite song by them
I attended a lot of Rush and Van Halen concerts, among others, way back in the fun 1980s. The Bee Gees concert was incredible and I have to consider them one of the most underrated bands in history.
Smashing cover of Hypnotized, which has a real Buzzcocks feel. Wednesday Week and Julie Ocean are also outstanding songs, as well as You Know My Name (Look Up the Number).
I remember discovering this band on the Peel show. Simple sounding but impossible for me to break down the parts on my Woolworths electric guitar (the family radiogram was 'modified' to serve as an amplifier). Your skill and passion shine through sir.
They were great, but the band that the guitarists were involved in afterwards was also great, and criminally underrated: That Petrol Emotion. Check out 'big decision' or 'under the sky'. Great songs.
Wednesday Week … my best punk rock friend in the 80s was named “Wednesday”… she was almost homeless and I would let her hang out at my place while I was studying design in Denver. When I got home, she always vacuumed and washed the dishes. We always played “Wednesday Week” as her theme song. Today nearly forty years later, she is still one of my best friends… married with kids living in Italy… me married and living in Tokyo. Life is funny!
I discovered them in 1980 while listening to a bootleg tape of an interview with SQUEEZE where they mentioned the Undertones new record being produced by Roger Bechirian who also worked with SQUEEZE. I immediately sought out their records (not an easy feat in 1980 US suburbs). They became and remain one of my favorite bands from the period.
Fantastic video. Can I suggest you check out The Chords. They supported The Undertones on occasions. Much underrated band, that should have been huge. Handful of singles and one fantastic album.
I loved that the drummer could never stop grinning while everyone else looked hard and serious. Great band 🤘 Btw, I thought he played an Azurglo Ricky?
If any of you haven’t heard the O’Neill brothers follow up band, That Petrol Emotion, they are also well worth checking out. Their song Sensitise, for example, would have been a smash chart hit in a sane world. Then there’s A Natural Kind of Joy, It’s a Good Thing, Cellophane, Big Decision, the list goes on.
I was briefly in a band called Chord Undertone whatever that means. It was just a college project I was thrown into and the guitarists rarely turned up to rehearsal and didn’t play well. I didn’t even know the name of the band until we performed and I was thinking if the other members knew. The Undertones are great!!!
You beat me to it, although I like them both. I was going to leave a comment saying Stiff Little Fingers is another Northern Irish band who came out during the troubles and represented 70s Punk in an authentic way, and as much as I love bands like Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Clash, Ramones they couldn’t. because The Undertones and Stiff Kittle Fingers were living in a war zone (to be fair to The Ramones growing up in Queens NYC isn’t the safest either). Anyway The Undertones aren’t the only ones.

loving this
This is so awesome. You're a legend Danny!
Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
Thanks Danny, really enjoy the channel
Sapko is the most legit bassman on YT. CHEERS from the American Midwest.
They are fantastic
Totally underrated
Brilliant songs
I had so much fun watching this video. 5 stars. Bonus points for the cable knit sweater. Great video, Danny.
The Undertones are a FANTASTIC hidden gem of a band! Even John Peel has a lyric in his tombstone from them!
I’m inquisitive what was written on his grave ?
@@lucybarney1Teenage kicks so hard to beat.
He was the first DJ to play teenage kicks.
@@lucybarney1
"Teenage dreams, so hard to beat." The first line of "Teenage Kicks."
@@gringogreen4719 Bit unfortunate, now we all know about his tastes.
Danny, your talent is far deeper than maybe the vid shorts have shown. Nice to see you finally coming out from under the bushel. The Undertones are still performing and their songs are timeless.
Please more longer videos !!!!!
Feargal Sharkey has such a distinctive voice.
Yes it can be best described these days in the upper echelons as "Rent a Gob"!?!
His brother Nazgul was better......
Fear GAL!
Fergal
I love these type videos. 1) I love listening to you play, 2) I love learning about the history of punk. Keep up the amazing work, sir!
Really hoping you get backstage!!! It will be rad to see a pic of you back there, even better if you can get some video! Good luck Danny!
Saw the Undertones with the Killermeters supporting them at Huddersfield Poly, in the great hall 1979. John Peel was standing next to me

A lovely tribute to a truly fantastic band who still sound fresh. More passion videos please!
Saw The Undertones at The Showbox on 1st Ave. in Seattle 1980. Just fantastic!
This just made what I needed today!

@@AmiGuitareveryone being a bot today I guess…
Please do more of these band re-views/ background videos Danny, absolutely love them
No worries, Danny, we love your cosplays!
I personally would love to hear some original songs of yours one day!
They were OK, but no Wham.

Thanks for turning me on to The Undertones! Your channel is one of my favs. Keep playin the BEHS!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Class tribute to a class band. Good stuff. Well played fella.
Spiky leather jacket gag was hysterical 😂 Good work
Undertones, love playing their songs. Playing in the ME introducing the locals to punk...
Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers make for an interesting study in contrast of that moment in History & Music.
Definitely
In times of great social unrest come solutions from opposite sides of the coin. 😁
Good afternoon,Danny, congratulations by your video, cheers and have a nice weekend for you and #BEHS4ever!!!!
This band was a big part of my teen years all those decades ago. I still have the vinyl. Power pop/punk at it's finest!
first saw them around '77 and last time before covid - they were the best punk band by a mile and still have it
Danke!
Brought a tear to my eye and took me back to messing about on the streets . Cool vid Mr Sapko
Great vid! Love the longer vids, deep dives, great bands...
How about a deep dive on
The Zutons?
Day one of asking for a video on The Zutons
I really like your videos where you do your own full versions of your favorite songs.

Saw the Undertones supporting the Saw Doctors in Manchester this year. What a night!
Always thought they were like Buzzcocks.
Loved the Mars Bar song.
Wore a Rudi t-shirt to SLF/Damned/Skids show in Belfast last week.
Mars Bar - great song! Unfortunately I had to switch to Twix IRL because Mars bars rotted my teeth 😭
there i've monetised you !
I’ve never heard of this band before, but they sound really great. Kudos!
Danny, that was brilliant. You're a paragon of talent👍.......... I'm just back from the pub, so 'paragon' was the only word I could conjure up☺️

The Undertones hated Stiff Little Fingers because SLF were told what to do by their dodgy manager...

Brilliant live act and perfect pop punk. They sit on the same shelf as the Buzzcocks for me.
