Depends. In many ways if all you want is an mp3 player (maybe with some extra features) then the classic and touch are still more than capable of that. I prefer to have my entertainment devices separate from my phone, and with the massive capacity of the last gen classic, it's still far from obsolete for me :)

My fave is the 3rd gen with the backlit touch sensitive buttons. I love that. The nano and classic now should totally have backlit control buttons. Why would they not be doing that?

this happened alot with my fourth gen :T you just gotta connect it and leave it...try doing the hard reset too, and dont worry about the freezing, itunes is still syncing your device. if you do all this right you shouldnt get anymore problems. hope this helps.

A first generation that has a lot of space and can keep its charge. What Apple should do is release the first gen of iPod Classic and have it "remastered" with the remastered part including more space. It would look like the first one, feel like it and have the same menus as it. But it would only have more music space on it. No other differences would be included. They should do this with iPod Classic, to give it a more classic feel, though they would still sell the current generation classic.
The 6th Gen iPod Classic was indeed its own generation, the one with the matte finish on the front and came in 80GB and 120GB editions. Now, it's funny you mention 5.5 because Apple made a revision to the 5th gen iPod Video which technically dubbed it the 5.5th Gen due to the fact that it wasn't a significant enough change to warrant a whole new line.

@DetroitBORG I completely agree. I remember my iPod photo got to a point where it only held a charge for 30 minutes or so. It is kind of sad, because as you said, it was a high quality piece. It went into a junk box that eventually got thrown away once I upgraded to the iPod video. Such a waste!!

I’d say not the same design as the 7th gen, too difficult to open if problems occur. 5th gen design with slight improvements is the way to go

The volume control wasn't taken off completely, it was integrated into the headphone jack in the iPod 5.

I actually used a firewire 30 pin cable to sync my iPhone 3G 2 years ego, it worked without any problems.

+Joey Shimmel sounds like the HDD is going bad. get an ipod to CF adapter and then a CF to SD adapter and use an SD Card instead
