I still have my iPod 4th gen 20GB model. The first one with a click wheel. Btw they were made for Windows XP. XP came out in 2001 so well before this iPod. And on the OSX side we had 10.3 Panther by then. When my 4th gen came out in 2004 OSX Tiger was brand new.

Nice stroll down memory lane! I just found this iPod which my late husband got me in 2003, 40 GB. I loved the clever boxing it was in. Still have the dock, belt clip holder, FireWire cable and little stick FireWire adapter for pc it came with, and the “remote” (which made it sound kind of muffled). Also have the iTrip, and there used to be a little thing that was about that same size which acted as both a speaker and microphone so you could record voice notes. Last night I plugged mine into my old white eMac to charge overnight, and it still works! I like the look and feel of it, and that it is just dedicated to music and audiobooks, nothing extraneous. Well-built. (And I like the clicker, too!)

Btw: you're wrong about the backlight - even the very first iPod had backlight!
I grew up with the very first iPod (10GB model) in our family that supported the remote control (old style), but this was not mine. My first personal one was the iPod Photo 30 GB (the thinner version). Later moved on to the first iPod Touch (16 GB), iPhone 3GS (16), iPhone 5 (16) and got an iPod 2nd gen. (20 GB - the fattest ever made) later on. Great stuff from Apple!

First was a 2GB Silver iPod nano 2G, then a 16GB iPod touch 2G, now a 32GB iPod touch 4G. Three iPods, still have all of them, they are all well loved. (especially my 4G touch...)

Indeed, Apple back then provided you with EVERYTHING with the package. The Ipod 3G was also my first ipod.

1st Ipod was the 20 GB 3rd Gen. I completely agree that this generation is the sweetest designed Ipod that Apple has come out with.
I've owned 2. Second was the 4th gen with click wheel.

    Good little review.
I really wanted this iPod model back in '03, but I got a Rio Karma instead so I didn't look like an iSheep.
Only in like 2009 did I purchase the iPod 3G 20GB model off eBay for kicks. Got it for less than $30! I later did a short review of it in one of my own vids. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

I think the buttons look very nice on that iPod. My first iPod was the "fat" iPod Nano. I now have a 5th gen iPod video with Rockbox and 64GB of storage.
