Outstanding review. Not sure what was better, the way you reviewed it, your presentation form factor including the slick timeline, or your ability as a photographer/videographer to squeeze so much out of a very modest lens. My other FE lenses are large and I wanted something small to carry around as a light walk-around lens, but was hesitant for its modest cost and that other reviewers dinged it for poor autofocus. I've now subscribed to your feed. Nicely done!
Excellent review. You have convinced me to buy this lens for my a6500. Will make it a terrific walk around street photography set up especially with the small form factor.
Great review, top notch quality and very informative. I like that you not only touch technical points but also your experience with it. Great work!!! Very well put together.
Great review. Bought this lens, tried it with A7ii & a6500. It works fine outdoors and in good light, mine wouldn't focus indoors or low light, hunts a lot. I had to return it.
Hey thanks for the comment. Thats a shame :( I do have to admit it does search for me under low light as well. But having said that, I find that my Sony a6500 and a7rii does hunt a bit as well even with native Sony lens and G-Master lenes. I guess coming from a Canon 5DMiii I was too spoilt on how fast the focus was on that beast. Till now I still do miss how fast canon focus is - But having a smaller body and the perks of mirrorless and not to mention the eye auto focus on the sony, still won me over. And many more.
rdi B you mean a7rii right? It really depends on what kind of work you do or intend to do? If you do more video I would suggest a6500 bit for still photos a7rii
solid review! i have the sony fe 35mm ZA lens and was wondering if i'm missing out on anything if i were to sell that lens and get this and another lens.
Thanks! I think native Sony lenses are always better and should be too! But they do come with a high price point always. I think the Samyang 35mm give the native sony lenses a run for their money. For the price point and form factor of the Samyang lens - I think that was something that really made my decision. Then after testing it and looking at the image quality and colour plus how decent it handles the AF in the Sony system, I felt I did make the right decision :)
Great review..! Hope you make a lot more reviews around sony lenses, and always compare it between fullframe an apsc use when it's originally a fullframe lens.. Thanks.
I just had my hands on this little baby. I think its chirpy a bit. This is my first prime lens though. But its Auto focus is great, for me at least. I own Sony A7 which is not supposed to be great in focusing and after using kit lens on A7, I can say this is faster in auto focus as far as I have experienced for few hours of use that too during evening when light was not good. I haven't really seen any review of Samyang 35mm on Sony A7, so I can say this is a nice combo, of course we are taking into consideration the price of this baby. Thanks by the way for your review on this lens. And I am starting to like primes now, so far so good. Will be shooting with this for next few days to really see its worth.
Thanks for your comment and I'm glad you're liking the lens. You're right on the mark for the price point, It is worth it also how light and small it is... so good for travel! I've always loved prime lenses too. 1 - It gets you to be more interactive with your subject and makes you wonder around and get creative with your shots, simply cause you have no zoom. 2 - Majority of the times the aperture is always wider/faster and creates great depth of field BOKEH! This lens produces great bokeh!
Thanks for your reply. Yes its Bokeh is good. Today was my second day with it, I see a little lag in focusing (miss focusing few times also) but of course I am using Sony A7 which is in itself not very good in focusing. And I was using it in very dark lighting and also against the highly lit backgrounds which was making it difficult too!!! Just getting used to it I guess. :) But I would appreciate your suggestions in setting up my camera to quickly focus when I am shooting in highly lit backgrounds (Christmas lighting - as I was shooting today) or low light?
cgee vlog Would be interested in learning how to do that. That’s really nice. If you have any interest, maybe we could work out a cross promotion between our channels?
Sergio De Riso I actually don't use luts. I just colour grade according to my taste or mood of the video. Not sure if it's the most effective way but I'm ok to customise to my style. I guess that way I can improve in my grading.
jackodon74 coming from a canon 5DMrkiii I did notice the difference with the autofocus in comparison to my a7rii and a6500 - when doing street photography. Have to admit the autofocus in the Sony bodies still can’t compare to the fast focus on my canon, especially when I do street photography and in low light - regardless of having a native Sony lens even a G-master series. Having said that, I haven’t tested the a9 and the new a7riiii yet. Apparently the autofocus is great there? But without sidetracking too much - i would say I hit the target maybe 9/10 times on a quick street photography scenario compared to maybe 7/10 from my Sony and that’s with the g-master 24-70. I feel Sony still needs improvement in that sense. a9 a7riii the solution? Maybe. With those facts in mind - I would say the Samyang 35mm would have a hit rate pretty similar the the gmaster - seriously. Just the image quality and dof on the Samyang isn’t as yummy as the gmaster.
I still own the original A7 which has same autofocus as A6000 which is quick but i still get too many fails. Sony's new models are too expensive including the A6300....Sony have gone crazy releasing high end lenses and body's but how many pros do you see using them.....???. They have ignored the prosumer enthusiast market big time. Still no fast f2.8 lens for the APSC range...it's a joke can only hope Sigma have some offerings in the pipeline. The G-Master lenses are too pricey and even the new f4 24-105 is over £1000.
Thank you for receiving my comment kindly! Many RUclips presenters choose music that is so disruptive that I exit quickly. Your music should fade to the background, not be repetitive (i.e. same musical or rhythmic phrase) . Let the important stuff - the educational content you're sharing - be highlighted! Keep sharing!
amazing Idea with the time spots in the video, wish everyone would do it that way
Thanks Guy Fawkes!
I like your timeline at bottom of screen. Great idea!
My god, the timeline is amazing. You cater to scrubbers and it's earned you my sub
Alman1234 awesome! Thanks mate 😀

Thanks Mark! Yup the small form factor for street photography is a winner for me too!
Wow, one of the best lens video reviewers on youtube. I'm digging it. Subscribed. Great job man.
Thanks! Appreciate the comment!
This is the most amazing lens review video I've seen yet, thanks for the effort you put into this!
Michael Kefeder thanks for watching and commenting!
Good job on this review! What do you think of the pricey alternative, which is the Zeiss 35mm 2.8?
Great review, top notch quality and very informative. I like that you not only touch technical points but also your experience with it. Great work!!! Very well put together.
Excellent and thorough review. Just bought this for my a7 and it’s the perfect walk around lens for me!
Steven Dean thanks for the comment! Ya the size of it is just great! Less intrusive and a perfect street photography lens!
do u still using this lens ?
I am thinking to get this lens! What is the pro and cons?
Good review. Great video recording and cinematography. The model was great. Love the music too, especially the solo drum tracks.
wow one of my favourite reviews! so creative and straight to the point, thank you for this!
Thank you!
Great Review John!!! Good to see your back with your reviews... any plans on reviewing the Sony FE 85mm 1.8 ;)
Thanks! I wish I can get my hands on the 85mm 1.8. If I do I would consider a review on it for sure :)
1st time I have subscribed within 50 seconds of video. U r way cool man. Amazing lens definitely a must buy prime.
Automatic like for the timeline at the bottom. 👍
dragonfist25 haha thanks! Appricate that!

Between A7ii and A6500, whats better?

Chris Gaviola not A7rii but A7ii
rdi B I can't really say much about the a7ii as I've never used one and this video I only compare the a7rii with the a6500. Sorry :(
Very good review. Subscribed dude. Keep it up
Thanks man! Thumbs up for the sub too! cheers
i wish that you made a video for the 1.4 version, you are much better than the others
Thanks! I'm keen in getting some new sigma art lenses in the near future. Hope to do a review on them... I hope!
Very good reviews. But, I think your background music a bit loud.
Love how youve edited this video, very smart! Id love this sort of videography on my videos! Kudos x
Nice video content and the layout was spectacular:) Thumbs up homie:)

Agreed. Since most of us already own the 35ZA, it would like to see sample comparisons between the two lenses.
Great review..! Hope you make a lot more reviews around sony lenses, and always compare it between fullframe an apsc use when it's originally a fullframe lens.. Thanks.
Thanks Fauzan! I'm considering doing a review on both my a7rii and a6500 with the Sigma 16mm 1.4 prime lens - which I just bought :)
i never subcribed to someone so fast! as soon i saw the time line! love that!
Great review, but I miss the auto focus ability in the outer parts of the frame, as this is always the problem with 3rd party lenses. THX alot anyway
Neat idea with the time spot in your video. Also, nice review!
Thank you!
You've convinced me ... I'm gonna grab one A$AP
Andy Chau hey man - I'm glad I've helped you in making a decision on the lens! You won't be disappointed!
Best review video. Can't believe such good lens
Thanks! Did you get the lens?
thank you for your effort, very professional :)
I subscribed because of the ingenious timeline on the bottom
John Silva haha. Thank you sir!
i'm gonna buy this lens

Hi I’m considering the a7, would you recommend it in 2018? Thsnks
How did you make the timeline at the bottom? Very nice.
All of it was done on FCPX. It's easy once you know how to use the shape elements with in FCPX
cgee vlog Would be interested in learning how to do that. That’s really nice.
If you have any interest, maybe we could work out a cross promotion between our channels?
Brilliant video
great review!!!
Great Review. Very insightful.
Thanks Tommy!
Awesome Samyang lens.
Thanks for going the extra mile!
Jeff Miller you're welcome 😁
sure wish you would have actually watched your video, the a6500 part happens where the timeline says a7r2 and the other way around.
Nice subscribe like the honest review
Thanks buddy! appreciate it :)
Luv the hat bro!!! When can u send it to me?
Btw, u got some Jake Paul influence now hey?!!!
Don't even know who Jake Paul is.. lol will look now.

Great review! It was very helpful! Hope you get back to making videos again... Just became subscriber #604 ; )
your focus point (soda cup) is too close
This video is 5 years old now, and there have been several FW updates for this lens in that time so this review is no longer valid.
Was interested in this lens until you showed the slow auto focus! ;-( Not much use for street photography!

Samyang produce regular firmware updates, this review is from 5 years ago, there have many many improvements since then
Love the marked sections and your presentation. The music, however, is very distracting and annoying!
Thank you for your feedback. Good to know :)

Very annoying background music ! I quickly stopped watching !
