I own a 28 mm F2 on a cropped sensor Sony a6000 and this lens is a beast, it’s sharp, fast autofocus, light like a medium banana, and it’s perfect for gimbal work!
I use only that one 28mm f2 and the 50mm f1.8, both lenses are lightweight and very portable to use in my travels and hiking routes. The two lenses plus my Sony A9 weights aprox 1Kg and I can usually do landscapes, travel photos and portraits with all covered :)
I have this lens on a Alpha 5100 (crop sensor) and it's perfect for livestreaming with the camera sitting on top of the monitor. Plus, I can get pretty good pictures of my pets with it, it's great for portraits too
My most used video lens :). About the AF speed in video :) on the A7III you can adjust that and you have 3 speeds. About the 18-35 sigma - try it on full frame without crop (you can disable it) and it will cover the sensor from around 24-28mm up to 35mm.
I have that 28mm popped into my camera bag right now, along with the Sony 55 f1.8 and on the a7iii body I have the 85 f1.8. This is a good, light weight, trio of primes that will cover a wide range of situations. Very informative "real world use" review, Julia; I especially liked seeing how the lens performed on the two cameras - big difference in that auto focus!
That's a really nice bunch of lenses to cover you for all sorts of scenarios! And yeah I was really surprised at the AF difference between the 2 cameras as well!
@@juliatrotti Three years have elapsed since you made this video, and there is still no better lens at this focal length, size, or price. The lens is now selling for $448.
Awesome video Julia. I was in the market for a nice wide prime for my travels and this video helped me out a lot! I was very fortunate to find one lightly used for $100 AUD and took it to a few places like Europe and Thailand and the photos and video turned out so good. You are very right that for the price this lens is solid in many regards. Cheers again for another great video!
Hi because of u me and my wife start to get in the photography and the way u present your videos how to use it so satisfyingly to watch and learn tnx and keep going^_^
Two of my favorite lenses that are light and have amazing image quality are the Sony 85m F1.8 and Sony 55m F1.8. I especially love the 55mm since it's so versatile as my walkaround lens.
That's because she is pronouncing it correctly. Boar-care is how it is pronounced phonetically. The Japanese word "boke" means "blur". Or "bokeru", "to blur".
You made my opinion on this lens. Spent 5 days searching affordable nice quality lens and I think it will be perfect for me. Purchasing right now. Thanks a lot for making this so easy! :) Keep up, good work!
Great video, full of hands-in practical experience and good sense. You make a great argument for this as a travel lens which is very much what I’m interested in picking up (for a modest budget) to supplement a 24-105 workhorse. Thanks for all the work. Subbed.
I have the 85mm 1.8. It's a great lens but sometimes in certain light it gives a swirly effect. It's kind of subject. There were a few back-lit shots that I took that didn't look that good imo. But overall it's great.
The Sony 85mm f1.8 is a Great lens and one of my favourites. and for the price it’s unbeatable. It does suffer from bad chromatic aberration and the close focus distance isn’t great but both aren’t too much of a problem and are fixable. Highly recommended
The 28 mm F2 lens is my go-to lens for everything. I got it for filming video in my office. Streaming, etc. Then it just became my favotite all around lens. Its the only one i use for Pax East and CES
Nice video for those who want to travel lightweight end enjoy the trip. I thing the most people has an apsc without image stabilisation on body. Or want to cary a small mirrorless. That means the lens must have an image stabilisation. This would be a nice video :) thank you for your content and opinions 👌
Try the 24mm 1.4 GM. Hands down the best in class. Love your videos. U are truly a sweetheart. Every time I watch your videos I want to go a shoot. Thank you for inspiring me and many others.
Want to see Sony 24mm f1.4 GM vs. Samyang/Rokinon AF 24mm f2.8. The latter is tiny and affordable while the former might be considered the best wide lens released this year. The Sony would win in a straight up contest, but in a light travel kit, vlogging or tight budget scenario maybe the win would go to Samyang?
We've actually been toying with the idea of getting the Samyang 24mm 2.8 to see how it holds up against the Sony 28mm, we love Samyang cine glass but the early images we've seen from the 24mm 2.8 didn't amaze us. However, maybe we'll be surprised... The Samyang 35mm 1.4 AF Sony E mount wowed us though and we might be comparing that soon to all our 35's :) We'll think about it the 24mm a little more and maybe you'll be seeing it here in the new year.
Thank you! Couldn't wait for this video when you mentioned it, this lens was used by one of the best cinematographer in the industry today now just switched to the 16-35gm so this lens for it price is incredibly, my next lens, keep them coming Julia
the new Sony 24mm F1.4 G master is incredible... Ive seen the results it produces first hand ...& oh wow its so lightweight too.. I think this might be a little better for vloggers as its a little wider than the 28mm.. & wide open at F1.4 its the sharpest of the sharpest lens Ive come accross.... Lens of the year for sure...
Damien Colacion they’re similar focus lengths so people are going to compare. The more you spend on a lens doesn’t always make it better, they’re tools, use whatever works for you to create you art. One of my fav lenses is my zeiss 135mm f3.5 vintage lense I bought for £25. The colour and sharpness from that lens is beautiful
Soooo nice! It was a hard decision, I was tossing up between the 35mm Samyang 2.8 and this 28 f2 as well! I ended up going the 35mm! You are right though vlogging with a 35 is damn tight! Hahahaha
I think I saw two people mention it so far but the Samyang 24mm f2.8 would be a very nice comparison video. I own the Samyang 35mm f2.8 and love it, it's my walk around lens. I can only imagine the 24mm version being just as good.
I just purchased a 28mm for my Canon T7i this afternoon. I'm heading to Maui in 2 months, so thank you for confirming all my research into the best possible lens for traveling and nature shots.
I had mine for like 7 days an sent it back. The quality and bokeh was superb but indoors I had so many problems with distortion that I couldn't justify the price. :-(@@MrEmm
I used to own the Zeiss Batis 25/2 until about a year ago. Excellent lens and sometimes I miss it but for a little more money I’d take the 24/1.4 GM probably over it. I hope to have a demo copy soon of it but got to try it out briefly in November.
I love your 'quicker' a7iii ...vs. 'slower' a7sii sudden 180-to-the-face auto-focus test. I believe the a7rii is just as slow. Albeit, you/I may have set up parameters AFC vs AFA ... or such differently. Utmost blessings!
Not sure if it matters or not, but there's a rumor floating around saying that the 28mm made in 2018 has improved sun flares and improved "sun star" effect over the older models. Something about the newer model's aperture blades were remodeled. I only say so because you said you picked up the lens a couple years ago and you were talking about lens flaring in this video. It maybe worth looking into? :)
Try the Samyang AF 24mm f2.8 pancake! It's a little wider, budged price as well and tiny as freak so it should fit your priotities really good! :) but I don't have any knowledge about the video autofocus of the lens… but a vlogging review of it would be awesome!
I love my Sigma 18-35 f1.8, it shows up my Canon 16-35 f2.8II as an inferior lens for 3x the money. Another brilliant video, you are very much a photographer's photographer and although you don’t talk about it it’s all about the image. Have a very merry Christmas and a brilliant 2019, I hope you don’t get snowed in! Thank you for all your amazing videos over the last year, every single one has been fantastic.
Always great to hear your input mate and completely agree, the 18-35mm is such a great lens. Cheers for always watching! Haha, no snow in Sydney but we've had some horrible damaging hail this week. Have a lovely Christmas Mark and a happy new year! :)
Dan Podbierezki Thank you Dan. I hope you and Julia weren’t on the bad end of too much damage. I know Sydney has had some horrendous hailstorms in the past, I remember reading about an extremely bad one in the late nineties. Fortunately my chest consultant, or someone who works there, subscribes to NG and has decent magazines in his waiting room. The middle paragraph of my original comment was supposed to say that Julia doesn’t talk about her own artistic merit, though she does talk about the technical elements. Have a good one both of you and thanks again for the amazing videos.
The a7s series videos were warmer and more pleasing though the autofocus was not impressive. Was this graded post or straight out of camera? Great video!
Thank you! As someone who usually always uses 1.4 and 1.2 lenses, I find that the f2 on the 28 is normally more than enough for the lighting conditions I film in!
It will be impossible to distinguish the extra sharpness in the 18-35 from the 28 2.8 in video, even 4k as 4k equals 8 megapixels in resolution. Your 28 2.8 has much more resolution than 8 megapixels. Quite the opposite actually, crop mode in Sony cameras (which you have to use with the 18-35) degrade quality as the sensor doesn't do full 6k sensor readout anymore. In other words, you would get better video with the 28 2.8. But size does matter, it is very tempting to go for the bigger lens when shooting in front of clients :)
Used to have this FE28 lens, it is a great lens for the value. But I found myself always needed something wider, so I trade it for the Sigma 24mm f/1.4
18-35 should be och crop body. There is lots of talk of the super 35 mode for FF but It crops down so much and lose lots of resolution more loss than with aps-c camera and there's also talks about that you get some extra reach with super 35, You Will NOT optically you just crop and that you can do In post.
I love my Sony 28mm .. i use mine for environmental portraits & street fashion... I paid £260GBP for it used & oh wow what a bargain... at last Sony has just anounced they are to bring out a Full frame Sony 35mm F1.8 ... this will then replace the 28mm for my street fashion work... but until then super happy with it...
fit this criteria? 35mm f2.8, another amazing lens and super sharp if you're into that sorta thing. Due to the longer focal length, the bokeh is strikingly similar to the 28, and my preferred lens when it comes to photography, however, videography, with the top and bottom crop, 28mm feels better. I have no issues owning both, in fact, I have a whole lot of mid range lenses because I enjoy them the most. 3 zooms, 5 primes between 28-50mm, my most enjoyable focal lengths. BTW, this is my second time getting the 28, and newer versions have very nice sun stars for landscape shooting. Nice and pointy
Hi, Julia! Love your job a lot and you are one of my favorite vlogger. I see that you still write in your description that you use Canon 5D mk iii, but last year you said that you've changed on Sony A7III. So, is it an mistake in your description or you still shoot with the Canon 5d III? Thank you and I wish good light!
Thank you for your video. I would like to use this lens for videos during the night with my sony a7III. I would like to know if you have had any hard time focusing issues in low light. Thanks!
Great review. I’d love to have the 24mm 1.4gm but debating. It’s like 2k in Canada. Also considering the 35mm rokinon. Just bought the 85mm 1.8 with my a7iii.
How about Sony‘s 50mm f1.8 or the 50mm f2.8 macro. Is f2.8 enough on a 50mm lens or does it look ugly? Also when I switch over to Sony one day, I want to get the 28mm f2 and for close-up Portraits a nifty fifty.
Hi, I love your clips and they are very helpful. Although you did say clearly at 03:31 the Sony A7S2 and NOT the S1 you mention earlier at the beginning of the clip..I like to be surely clear.. So you did use the A73 and 2 S versions to complete the whole video, right ? I am contemplating to buy either the A73 versus the S version, that's why I ask.. Sure the 28mm f2 will be the first lens to go with the camera. Cheers
You should consider the Rokinon/Samyang 24mm. Tiny, fast (2.8), inexpensive, lightweight, wide. I don't use it much for photos, but it's great for vlog style videos.
Size, weight, quality, price - great lens.
Travel, portraits, landscape, astro, vehicles, food, events... just about any type of photography
I own a 28 mm F2 on a cropped sensor Sony a6000 and this lens is a beast, it’s sharp, fast autofocus, light like a medium banana, and it’s perfect for gimbal work!

the 28mm has a really nice soft rendering on your skin, either that or your foundation game is top notch
I travel with the Canon 28mm 1.8. It’s a nice lens that gives beautiful flares.

The Sony 24mm f1.4 has been getting strong reviews. That to me seems like a really good contender for competition to the 28 and worth checking out
I agree, I would love to test it out and see how it goes for vlogging :D
How can that be a competition? A g master lens versus the 28mm f2?? With that gm lens you can buy like 5 28mm f2..

Love the video like always! Do you vlog with manual exposure or automatic settings?
All manual settings as always. :)
Thanks dan!
did you use an ND Filter for your video outside on this 28mm f2 ?
Yes, I always use an ND filter for video! Not for photos though :)
A lot of vignetting though, but for the price, it looks fantastic.
Like first , watch later. I believe this video is so educative 😍👍

Love your every Video ❤️
I feel like I might need this lens! It really reminds me of the 35 mm though ... but I LOVE a 28mm... perfection!
Yeah it is pretty similar to the 35, the 28 is just that little bit too wide for fashion portraits though but perfect for travel!
Very nice picture taken with, and good price for this lens, is it better than zeiss 35/2.8 ?
In terms of vlogging, I wouldn't be able to use the 50 as it would be too close up, but I do love the 50mm focal length for portraits!
sony fe 50/1.8 's AF is jerky at low light... if you are not working in low light, it is best value for portraits and it is sharp
Awesome vid! Quick question can you get the Deity mic in Australia? It sounds super good!
Thank you! Yeah you can get it shipped from the American stores like B&H :)
Superb review ^_^
Julia 😍❤️❣️🥰 great lens 😊
Hi, I love your clips and they are very helpful. Although you did say clearly at 03:31 the Sony A7S2 and NOT the S1 you mention earlier at the beginning of the clip..I like to be surely clear..
So you did use the A73 and 2 S versions to complete the whole video, right ?
I am contemplating to buy either the A73 versus the S version, that's why I ask..
Sure the 28mm f2 will be the first lens to go with the camera.
Cheers
There's the Samyang 24mm and 35mm f2.8 pancake lenses. Have you tried them out?
Nice lens! I also just buy it
You should try out the new Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 DG HSM for sony e and compare it to your Canon 35 mark ii.
I would love to do that! It's on my list of things to do this year :D
You should consider the Rokinon/Samyang 24mm. Tiny, fast (2.8), inexpensive, lightweight, wide. I don't use it much for photos, but it's great for vlog style videos.
I guess On 24mm 2.8 the bokeh Isn't all that great?
PLEASE DO VIDEO COMPARING SHOTGUN MICS FOR SONY! IT WOULD MAKE FOR GOOD CONTENT AND I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW
