Rarity’s wings are actually a double reference! While it does reference Icarus, it’s also a reference to the myth of Eros and Psyche, as when Psyche was deified by Zeus, she sprouts butterfly wings.
As a big fan of Greek Mythology, I can strongly say that this is one of my favorite videos from this channel. Seeing MLP put effort into referencing these popular stories is great. And having Scribbler do the narration makes it 120% cooler.
There's actually one more infamous mythical creature from Greece that should appear in mlp: ichneumon. Ichneumon (means tracker in Greek. Ιχνευμονας) was a race of weasel like monsters that are said to be the natural enemies of dragons. I think an episode about ichneumons fighting attacking dragons and Spike having to befriend them somehow would be interesting.
Next we should have the top 10 MLP alter egos; Canon alternate versions of the main characters: Daybreaker, Nightmare Moon, flutterbat, Shadow Dash, bat guard Dash, Pinkamena ,Nightmare Rarity, Agent sweetydrops, Midnight Sparkle ,Pony of Shadows, Demon Sunset Shimmer, Prince Sombra, Alicorn BigMac, etc.
Basing these creatures and situations on actual mythology was, honestly, a genius decision. Not only is it a cool reference to a much more mature material but it is also a way of linking people to articles about actual mythology which are always a good read. Moreover, mythology makes any fictional world a much more lively place where every bit of land, air and sea is someone's roaming territory and where a heroic challenge might appear out of nowhere.
I LOVE Greek Mythology!!! So I, of course, knew most of these. But I almost cried when we got to the spot with the hippogriffs because they were the only reference that I did not know. And to make it worse, Silver Stream and Princess Skystar are my favorite characters in the entire generation!!! I cry! :(
In the mlp idw comic applejack had golden apples on her farm, until pinkie pie ate them all. Then pinkie pie became a reality warper Eating a golden apple gives you wishing magic all pinkie pie has to say is i wish and it will come true. In one greek story i was told in middle school about a soldier fought a dragon both died but during the fight the soldier cut a golden apple and a drop of the juice went into his mouth and brought him back to life
I loved the geese refrence as a way to protect the castle. Romans were safe for a long time, because everytime someone tried to sneak in, geese would start to make a noise and wake everyone up to get rid of the enemies. They also are extremely cuddly, to the point where you have to cuddle them few times a day to satisfy them.
Well, not technically mythology. " Faust" was written by Goethe, and in our mythology belong the northern gods and our fairytales, but by no means Goethe or Schiller

What I wonder is if people got the little reference aside from the reference of Icarus. Where Rarity mentioned that she switched out RD’s Rock n Roll song. Since Rock n Roll can be similar to Heavy Metal, maybe it was a slight reference to the Iron Maiden Song “Flight of Icarus” ?

Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Norse mythology seem to get the most attention, hence are seen as the most popular, in most works in the western world. Japanese lore got more popular as anime's fandom grew in areas over the past few decades. But to this date, I have seen very little Celtic and Irish lore/mythology references, I've also seen almost no Korean mythology references (I blame that one on the fact that almost none of Korea's culture is shared with other nations for whatever reason/a general disinterest in Korean culture for no real reasons). There are an almost incalculable/uncountable number of entities world culture that really do deserve more exposure. Most people think the case of the Headless Mare in the episode where Princess Luna helped Scootaloo with her bad dreams was a Sleepy Hollow reference, but that reference goes back even further, it's a reference to the Dullahan, an entity in Irish lore that is described as being a representation of the aspect of death. One of the biggest monsters in Irish lore wouldn't need much tweaking for MLP and still be palpable for children, the Fomorians, which are described as being twisted giants that are missing half their bodies (i.e. having only one leg and arm with an eye and ear missing in several cases) but each strangely beautiful their own way; one of the most terrifying Fomorians, who was also one of their leaders during the war with the Tuatha Dé Danann (the Pre-Christian Gods of Ireland, granted their status through the intervention of the ancient Goddess Danu), was Balor, who was a one-eyed Fomorian, and was described as towering over the tallest of the Fomorians and having a power that brought destruction upon all he gazed upon with his eye, for this reason he kept his eye closed until he felt the time required it but since he was so insistent on keeping his eye shut most of the time it actually required the 5 physically strongest Fomorians to lift the lid of his eye so that he could rain destruction upon all he gazed upon. Cuchulain, the great pre-Christian hero, has a very interesting story in that his name literally translates to Hound of Chulain, Chulain being the king he accidentally offended by slaying his favorite hunting dog in self-defense then as recompense for his crime swore to Chulain to serve as his dog for 7 years. Now, I don't know if this has ever been referenced in MLP but I think it would be a nice nod to Irish lore to see a Diamond Dog with a spear that is said to be their greatest hero at some point because Cuchulain wielded a spear called Gae Bolg, a spear so dangerous that one prick of the body while attending to it could spell instant death, and was known as "the Dog Warrior" because of his time serving as king Chulain's dog, and was an absolute paragon of the loyalty dogs are attested to during his entire life.
"no-human rule"... Yeah, with the tools and instruments still designed as if to be used by humans, and the number of times they've mentioned hands and feet (and the name Fleetfoot/Flatfoot), that rule feels more like a side note.
